"American Beauty" is an overrated conglomeration of homophobia, teen angst, and midlife crises.  The end is neither shocking nor revealing.  There is a decent amount of good acting and it is a good film, but it's not nearly as good as the faux-intellects like yourself would claim.

"Friday" is farging hilarious from start to finish.  Anyone with a half-developed sense of humor would enjoy "Friday" much, much more than "American Beauty".

Yes, Friday is farging hilarious, but American Beauty is still a superior film. No, the end isn't shocking, since he says twice that he will be dying by the end of the film. An ending doesn't have to be shocking to be good. Shock-value endings are cliche anyway.

Anyway, I'm going to have to agree with rjs on this. They are both movies that are great to watch but for VERY different reasons, so comparing them is pretty pointless.

i don't see the big deal about american beauty.  yeah i thought it was better than most movies but i've never had the desire to watch it again.

ive watched it many times. its never lost its appeal. its still a great movie, great acting, story and I though it was a pretty funny movie at times. comparing the two is dupid

im confused as to why so many people think thats stupid

just because one movie is a comedy and the other a drama or one a chick flick nd one a war movie doesnt mean you cant say one is better

I've been trying to figure out why they are even in the same arguement?  I don't think its fair to judge movies that are not in the same classification. Certain movie classifications are meant to be one or the other or a mix of them. Friday as a comdey is great, one of my personal fav's. American Beauty as a drama, again is great. I have more respect for drama's than I do comedies, because they generally deal with more realistic situations and don't always base the point on laughter. If it's as simple as saying which one is better, than American Beauty is a better movie than Friday. Friday is funnier, but other than that, it's not even close.

I have a hard time understanding what makes people say that American Beauty is overrated.

I don't think that it says anything overly profound. On the contrary its themes are very simple and pervasive. Middle aged depression. Suburban monotony. The confusion and frustration of being a teenager.

What makes it a great movie isn't that it makes some sort of profound statement or gives some insight into something that no one had ever addressed before. It's an amazing movie because it's fantastically acted and directed and nearly everyone can relate to some or all of the problems that the main characters face. The characters have depth and are interesting. The situations are accessible.

It's a great movie.
