i think joaquin deserved an oscar more than reese.

Definitely.  But did he deserve one more than Philip Seymour Hoffman?

We've already discussed thoroughly that the quality of male actors seems to be much higher than that of females in American cinema these days.  At least 3-4 of the Best Actor nominees this year probably turned in better performances than did Reese Witherspoon in "Walk the Line".

Many movie experts agreed with rome's assessment

not really...im not aware of any group or individual who even had it as their best movie of last year much less the best movie in years

the acting was universally lauded while the movie itself was deemed mostly just ok

matty is right on...when it comes to movies like that its all about how much liking/interest you have in the subject...outside of that its basically rough childhood...big splash into the business.....get drugged out...either die from it or recover and live happily ever after

pheonix was awesome but he wasnt johnny cash to me...he was just another movie musician on drugs....psh was in another galaxy...he was capote

just watching the two movies recently...i have an odd assesment...

hoffman was better at being capote than pheonix was at being cash. however, i think pheonix did a better job in his movie.

hoffman was a better impersonator, but pheonix was a better actor.

The Great Raid-  :cfhead :cfhead    compared to all the great war flicks this one seemed fairly average to me.  A bit too long.

i dont agree but i can definitely see how you would

im on the flip side where i think psh was capote personified AND had an off the charts performance...whereas with walk the line i never saw johnny cash i saw a great performance by joaquin pheonix

to me when playing a real life figure you want to have a large element of being an impersonator as you want to believe that the peson on the screen really is that guy

regardless how you look at it  you cant say a bad thing about either end result

I'm sure if I went digging through critics comments somewhere someone said 'Walk the Line' was movie of the year.

igy, didn't know you were such a big Ray Charles fan.

I think Phoenix did a great job as Cash, but I can't get past the cleft palate.

How tall was Truman Capote?  I thought they did a great job of movie tricks to make PSH seem a lot shorter than he really is... because I think Capote was like 5'5".  Anyway, Hoffman single-handedly carried a decent film, whereas Phoenix got to feed off the performance of Witherspoon and all the musical numbers.

That said, I think David Straithairn is a good actor, but I can't figure out why he was nominated for "Good Night, and Good Luck".  It wasn't even nearly his best performance IMO.  Too easy a role for him.

Rome

I didn't say it was the best movie in years.  I said it's the best movie I've seen in years.

I'm sure there are tons of other movies that were better.  I just haven't seen one that surprised me more in terms of quality than that one did.  I was literally expecting nothing from it and was shocked that I enjoyed it as much as I did.

As for what movie critics have to say, I really don't know because I don't pay them any mind.

not a huge fan
i certainly like him more than johnny cash
the movies i thought were equally good

what was his best performance?

Rome

I liked his performance in "L.A. Confidential" personally.  I also liked him in "Eight Men Out."

I disagree with Morrow being "too easy" for him, btw.  I think he only made it look easy and that's the mark of a great actor.

ice grillin you

its hard to compare his performances as the one in good night and good luck was one of his few leads and certainly his biggest role (that im aware of)

i agree with rome he was great in  la confidential but almost impossible to say better as he was in it for a such a small amout of time

I hated the movie in general but he was also excellent in "Raising Isaiah."

Any actor who can tolerate Jessica Lange's non-stop caterwauling without ending up in county lock-up deserves mad props.
