TFA was getting rave reviews from the critics and it was very average. Read similar quotes "Rian nails it", "tons of surprises", "very emotional", "best SW film since ESB" etc. I'll reserve judgment until Friday. I'm spoiler free for the most part.

I don't remember the reviews being anywhere that good from the critics, but I checked and yeah, they were. all I know is there's no death star of any form being mentioned so that's a major step up.

either way im in no matter what. you know with the whole nerd thing and having a 10yr old.

mudbound - epic story about two families one white and one black living on the same farm in the 1940's....plays like a tv movie with great acting...feels like youve seen it a million times over with the same story telling narratives that come with these kinds of movies but its done well just not great

6/10

concussion - never really liked sports movies cause its always weird to me seeing a famous actor play a famous athlete and this movie has a lot of that...david morse plays a really creepy mike webster...some dood even plays andre waters....the worst casting of all time tho might be luke wilson as roger goodell....its not remotely believable and is super distracting...the rest of the movie is half run of the mill procedural about discovering CTE and half completely unnecessary love story which doesnt fit at all

3.5/10

live by night - ben afflecks follow up to argo....its a typical gangster period piece that got pretty bad reviews and argo was oscar nominated but i actually liked this better...more having to do with argo being incredibly overrated than this being great but still this is a entertaining watch if a little too long...at the very least you want to finish it thru to see how it ends...the costumes and make up here are pretty crazy in that theres at least three actors in it sienna miller....elle fanning and chris messina who i had no idea were in it until i looked at the credits afterwards

5/10

Isn't Mudbound on Netflix? Sounds familiar.

I actually turned Live by Night off twice. I was excited for it and it was busto

We have tickets for TLJ tomorrow night at 9:15.   The theater is basically an IMAX junior.   I've seen probably 10 movies in the place and I can't wait for this one.  The critics are almost universal in their praise, which is mildly troubling.

ladybird - pretty god damn good. amazing script and great direction from gerwig. i had no idea who this person who played ladybird was but she was superb. anyone who saw laurie metcalf on horace and pete knew she was going to bring it. i love the year in the life structure and how it ended. felt real and genuine. see this. 4.5/5
Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

mudbound is also in some theaters if you don't live in MA but yes it's on Netflix

not sure what there was ever to be excited about with live by night...it got average at best reviews from jump and didn't even look good in trailers...I wouldn't go out of my way to watch it but it kept my attention to the end

I attribute a lot of the TFA reviews from excitement of a new movie with a new direction and characters. Fans/critics hated the prequels so they were probably a bit relieved they went a different direction. Still, I was 30 minutes into TFA when I knew I didn't like it.

One cool thing Disney Hollywood studios does is it works in the new movies with Star Tours prior to their release. They did it with TFA and did it with TLJ too. They take you through that red cave with the crystals, then you land in what will be the new Star Wars land.

The entire plot and clips from the movie are already on line. I read some possible spoilers about 3 months ago from some supposed disgruntled employee who was kicked off the set. I only remember some of them and not sure they're true.

a movie podcast that i regularly listen to
it has my favorite movie reviewer on it
it also has another person who is a gigantic star wars nerd

the movie critic person had problems with it but was overall positive where as the star wars nerd actually liked it less and was a mixed positive on it...fwiw he thinks rogue one is the second best star wars next to empire....and he was eh on force awakens

the negatives from both were about the same....it was ridiculously too long....had too many story lines that jumbled it all up...it needed to be streamlined...introduced too many characters without any real background...too many cuddly disney like animals/creatures...lots of really cheesy dialogue (isnt this every star wars even the good ones?)

^^^^Probably a more accurate and honest review. I'm expecting a comparable sequel to TFA with a more original plot and a few surprises. Low expectations for me. They need to set the tone like they did in Rogue One which was perfect. TFA barely felt like SW to me.

ice grillin you

im pretty much the same
i think its going to be just like like force awakens
probably a little better
but not as good as the reviews are saying

you will walk out of the theater feeling ok
then three days later you will have completely forgotten about it
i can take a phrase thats rarely heard...flip it....now its a daily word

igy gettin it done like warrick

I thought it was "OK", the plot was weak of course but I got invested in the new characters pretty easily.

speaking of the prequels, I am watching all the movies in chronological order and man, was phantom menace brutal. clones was meh, watchable I guess, but revenge of the sith, I always thought was a strong movie, minus hayden christiansen's crappy acting.

rogue one is tonight.

I'm beyond done with the super hero genre which has taken over theaters.  Even the GOTG movies I find to be massively overrated.

That being said, Star Wars is still the one movie franchise where I geek out in anticipation.  I'm sure it won't be the best movie I see this year but it'll be the one movie where I'm legit excited when it starts.

Rome

Rogue One was the best movie out of all of them.  I know every swinging wookie dick loves Empire but R1 was just totally dark and badass.  It's too bad they killed off Jyn Erso because smash.

smeags

im pretty much there with you. I put the two movies at 1a & 1b. pretty much R1, new hope and the ESB are an amazing trilogy.
