Just saw War of The Worlds. Tom Cruise was good, despite my reservations. The special effects, and the premise are winners too. In the end, although it makes a little sense, you still leave wondering what the hell you just watched. Too many loose ends, and too abrupt of an ending. Speilberg also uses some cheap imagery meant to tug on the heartstrings of Americans who witnessed the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. They build Cruise into the likely hero here, the guy who is gonna save the Earth, and instead, you end up watching him play hide and seek for two hours with a couple of raptors in the kitchen a bunch of ruthless aliens who are so far advanced but fail to bring along the penicillin.

Nice time waster, scary moments, decent acting, and you get your moneys worth in action, but a great re telling of the story it is not. "Alright" is the phrase you will wanna use to describe it.

That review describles most movies these days.  How many brands were mentioned?

Saw Kung Fu Hustle! Even more surreal than Shaolin Soccer and about as funny. Described in one British paper review as "If Enter The Dragon was directed by Tex Avery, this would be the result."
"The drunkenness, the violence, the nihilism: the Eagles should really be an English football team, not an American one." - Financial Times, London

I just realized that having a kid and buying a new house means you basically have no time to do anything.  I think I'm going to have to drop the son at the in-laws and take the wife to a movie this weekend.

Ain't that the truth?

WEST is GOD

Saw WOTW today. Wasn't very good IMO. Unless you are a fan of a lot of destruction, there isn't a whole lot else. Cliched ending, many loose ends unexplained, and just average acting at best. Felt like it went nowhere to be honest. I wouldn't recommend it.

7.5/10

Wasn't horrible, but just not very good. If you go in with low expectations and because you have nothing to do on a weekend, and want pretty cool special effects and stuff getting destroyed then you should have a good time.

Welcome to our world!  What's a movie?  OK I remember now.  Think I saw one about 11 years ago.

Tom's son was way more annoying than Dakota Fanning. I couldn't stand him in that movie.

Dakota is a great actress for someone so young though.

Saw WotWs yesterday. It was better than I expected. Cruise's part could have been played by anyone. Fanning wasn't as horrible as I feared and the ending, though sudden, didn't need to be explained any futher or dragged out for me b/c I read the book and knew how it ended anyway.  I'd probably give it three stars out of five. Decent summer movie for those of us that like explosions and loud noises.

saw war of the worlds as well..

the first 3/4 of the movie was excellent. the last 1/4...blew

slight spoiler.....

i could have easily left the theater when the girl was captured, and cruise went all randy quaid in independence day. it fell apart after that, speilberg Hoydad out. while it stuck to the book, which is how it should have been done, the part with the son was stupid.

speilberg hasnt made a movie that i liked from start to finish since saving private ryan

end slight spoiler.....

saw war of the worlds last night.   Other than the fun action scenes I didnt like it much.  The acting was so bad it was painful to watch IMO.  The parts where Cruise was just with the kids and they would fight and bitch and moan was terrible.  Would have been ok if it happened once, but it seemed like every time the action sequences were over they would repeat the stupid family argument scenes.  GAY!!   I found myself wondering how certain things were happening... like the first storm where NOTHING works, except there is one guy with a camcorder taping it and he gets killed.  How does nothing work and his camcorder does?  I dunno, didnt make sense to me.  Just one of the many things that didnt make much sense first time through.

I could be a huge dork and explain it, but I don't think you actually care that much so never mind.

I didn't see it, but I never understood why they were hellbent on making that a movie.  It never seemed like that would translate well to the big screen, and they had nothing but trouble getting it made for the last 10-15 years.  Seemed like a bad idea.

BlueHeart

I'm dyin' to see F4. It's been killed by reviewers (who suck and should be ignored) because they have a stick up their arse.

It's supposed to be cheesy. It's supposed to be low-tech. It's supposed to be campy.
Maybe the voices aren't real, but, they've got some pretty good ideas...
