^^^ fact.

Just got back from The King's Speech. A monkey could have directed this movie because it relied entirely upon the performances of its actors. Luckily the performances were remarkable. I don't know how much replay value it has. I would estimate it has approximately none, but I suppose someone somewhere will want to see someone pretend to stammer for two hours more than once.

Very good movie with two great performances.

re: True Grit.

I actually saw the Coen brothers' version.  I have not seen the John Wayne iteration, and I have not read the book/short story or whatever the source material is.

The girl character bugged me.  She was for the most part unbelievable.  Her mastery of grown men, indeed of everyone around her, kept reminding me I was watching a movie.  This 14 year old girl, who has struck out on her own in an essentially lawless land, handles bums and bankers like chumps, speaks high society English but understands drunken gutter mumble.  She can roll cigarettes and she can negotiate contracts with businessmen.  She is pitiless, relentless, competent.  And she's not trading funhole for what she wants.  The few times she was shown to be frightened, playful, or powerless were not enough to make the idea of a 14 year old girl running this revenge campaign in the least ways believable.

Without the coda, I could not have liked the film.  But when we see the girl grown into a harsh, commanding old maid, the character became possible:  a preternaturally capable and pitiless 14 year old would grow up to become an extremely disciplined bolt of self-righteousness-- "stay seated, trash"-- but she's not only lost an arm, she's alone.

When the credits rolled, I was satisfied.  Damn fine movie.

I never commented on this post, but I thought it was spot on. The girl was insufferable, but I was largely able to let it go because her insufferableness was the point. Without the coda, however, it would have stuck with me and reduced my take away enjoyment of the movie.

hailey steinfeld was absolutely incredible in the movie and somehow more than held her own against oscar winners all around her...she should win the oscar

leo will win because hollywood loves her...and she was good even if she hammed it up a little too much...but steinfeld absolutely should win...her seen with damon at the beginning of the movie is better than leos whole role

I watched Takers.

I will not get that 2 hours back. New rule. As soon as a movie mentions its title during the movie I will turn it off.
What a piece of shtein. I only watched it because my girls sister had rented it. 1 out if 10.

Grown Ups - nice to see all the SNLers (and Kevin James) together again but this movie should've been better with the cast it had....it was basically 90 minutes of nothing.  It wasn't hilarious, it wasn't stupid, there were no major conflicts, there were no memorable lines....nothing.  At least it had Salma and that blonde Madison Riley

i saw Let Me In the other day...never heard of it before but it's about this 12-year old girl vampire. pretty good. i think it's the little girl from kick ass and she's still too sexy to be a little girl.

The girl in the John Wayne movie was ridiculously annoying, then again so was the whole movie.
