I think you're obligated to purchase if your price is accepted.  The one time I used it for airline tix, I was put on redeyes from DC to San Fran, through KC (at 3AM, ain't much going on in the KC airport).

as much as i loved living in kansas city, and as easy as that airport is to get in and out of, i would strongly recommend that anyone flying cross country avoids flying through MCI.  there's only a couple of news stands and resturants to keep you busy during a long layover.  and if you happen to fly through after 9pm, you're pretty  much farged because just about everything is shut down.
