Ripping DVDs

Do you have to download a special program to rip dvds or do most modern computers have the capability to rip dvds?

I've never tried to rip dvd's.  I stick with phone books and the bible.  It's a more impressive display of strength.

Not just for ripping/burning software... ya know, if you're into that kind of thing  :paranoid... but damn near everything.
Maybe the voices aren't real, but, they've got some pretty good ideas...
