Getting into the backfield is Trent Cole's main mission

By Marc Narducci

Inquirer Staff Writer

One of the bright spots of an otherwise gloomy Eagles season has been the rapid development of rookie defensive end Trent Cole. A fifth-round draft choice from the University of Cincinnati, Cole made his first NFL start last week against the New York Giants a memorable one, with two sacks and six tackles in the Eagles' 27-17 loss.

Cole is second on the team with five sacks, all in the last three games, with two against Dallas and one against the Washington taterskins.

His emergence has coincided with improved play of fellow defensive end Jevon Kearse. Teams are discovering they have to pay more than casual attention to Cole, distracting them from Kearse.

At 6-foot-3 and 260 pounds, Cole relies on speed and quickness to get by much bigger offensive tackles. He wasn't highly touted in college but now seems to be one of the young players whom the Eagles can revamp their defense around.

Earlier, Cole spoke about his rookie season, his rapid development, and life in the NFL.

Question:With five sacks in the last three games, are you satisfied with the way things have been working out?

A:I will never be satisfied with what I have done. Probably the rest of my career I won't be satisfied. I want to keep pushing, getting tackles and big sacks.

Q:You had two sacks against the Dallas Cowboys two weeks ago on Monday Night Football. What was it like to perform so well in front of a national audience?

A:It was Monday Night Football and I got to play. It was a chance to go out there and prove I can play at that level and help the team. I think I did that, and I will keep pushing and improving.

Q: In the last three games, you've spent considerable time in the opposing backfield, which for a lineman is the place to be.

A: That is my motto and what I am always thinking, getting in the backfield.

Q: Describe the feeling you have now on the field compared to early in the year when you were not sure what your role would be.

A:It feels good knowing your role is contributing to this team. It's fun, exciting, and takes some of the stress off.

Q: Counting the preseason, you've had 14 games. Isn't there a rookie wall that you are supposed to be hitting at this time?

A: I don't believe in that rookie wall. Some people hit it, but you have to keep pushing and do the same thing you have been doing.

Q: What is it like having to prove yourself again, after you established yourself in college?

A:It's a big difference. In the NFL, it's stressful every week. The key is play hard and know your job. In college, I was more settled.

Q: How bizarre has everything been around here with the T.O. sideshow?

A:The attitude has always been to keep pushing forward and not let that affect us.

Q: What was your best college moment at the University of Cincinnati?

A: One year we played at Hawaii. Not only had I never been to Hawaii, but we got into one of the biggest fights ever in college football.

Q: Did opponents double-team you a lot at Cincinnati?

A:I was double-teamed a lot. My first year, I was getting out there and after that they started double-teaming me and doing what they could to stop me.

Q: What has been your biggest adjustment from college to the NFL?

A: Getting the playbook down.

Q: You have talked about being a game warden once your NFL days are over. Could you talk about that?

A: I'm an outdoorsman and grew up outdoors. Hunting is a great release, because all things stop when you are out there doing it. And I love fishing. I'm looking for places around here to do both.

Speaking of the Inky...

Bob Brookover wrote a long ass piece on who the Eagles could look at in FA and he called the Lions LT by the wrong name constantly. Instead of his real name, Jeff Backus. He called him Jeff Ruckus.

Come on, Bob. Get a clue.

Maybe he just thought Jeff Ruckus, was a better name. I certainly do.

Hell yeah it is.  If we end up picking him up, we should change his name.  He's even have his own theme song courtesy of The Wu-Tang Clan.  "Bring the Ruckus!  Bring the muthafargin' Ruckus!"  :yay

I asked about 15 different random "Eagle" fans at the stadium if they knew who Trent Cole was.   Not a single person said yes.

Trent Cole really likes to say "pushing" a lot.

He needs a thesaurus.

I was there that night!  Radical fight broke out at the end of the game.  Couple of bearcat players gave Timmy Chang a few cheapshots as he was taking a knee.  All of a sudden all hell breaks loose.  It was total chaos.  Cops everywhere, fans throwing water bottles & Cincy players trying to climb in the stands.  Nuts.  If I recall Cincinnati needed to win to be bowl eligible so there was a lot of pressure on both teams.  It was crazy.

Next week at the MNF game/# 92 tribute, let's ask around to see if they know who Reggie White was.

Not knowing who Trent Cole is is just sad for any fan who paid money to attend a game at the stadium, especially since he's been a force for the past 3-4 weeks. Wonder if they thought Derrick Burgess came back...assuming they knew he used to be there, and then later left for Oakland.
