Title: Salary cap league is ON..and still FREE
Post by: RomeyRome on July 11, 2003, 03:53:10 PM
I just went over there and it says (espn.com) they will start it in late July and i can set it up.  It is FREE, and I believe we can have around 20 people in it.

It is a different type of league, where you have a salary cap, and each NFL player's individual salaries go up and down each week based on their performance so you can pick up and drop players based on how much cap room you have each week.
There are many more details which are NOT that difficult to understand but would take too long to explain now.

It is FREE, and probably the funnest league I've ever been involved in.  Like I said if I could see some interest, then ESPN.com will email me when it starts, and I can set EVERYTHING up, alls you have to do is sign up for FREE and wait till the season starts.

If you are already planning to be in a couple other leagues and usually you might think that you don't want to get involved in too many and spread yourself thin, I'd advise you to give this league a try. ;D

Did I mention it is FREEEEEEE! ;)

lol  You'll have to not only hire Snyder & Co. but also invite them into your home.

We have 4 including me, we'll need atleast 10 I'd say for it to be fun, but it is a long way away and I'll set it up either way once it begins, and then try to get people to do it.

10-20 is good stuff.

Sweeeeeeeeet, what's up RS?  Howz it going?  When I first started this thread, the ESPN.com fantasy page for their salary cap league said it would be up and running in late July.  It still is not up yet, I don't know why.

I'm currently checking into other FREE salary cap leagues, I have a few I'm looking into in terms of checking out their rules/format.  TSN/FoxSports has a free salary cap league but I don't know if I'm liking their format too much.

I'll get it updated soon.  There is NO draft, so we don't have to hurry.  (Don't trip about the no draft part, it is still a very very exciting league as you get to change your players and team each week based on salary.  So with draft leagues you are stuck with one team all season, this one you get to change week to week which is more fun IMO.)

LOL...I'm doing great, man...marriage is cool (so far).  Ummm, I dunno if you checked this out yet or not, but TheSportingnews.com has a salary cap league for free.  I joined one league last week.  Man, it's tough to field a great lineup with the salary cap in that league.  Check it out id you haven't already...maybe you'll like it.

ps...isn't Linda just beautiful?  :P :-*

Your honor, I'd like to present exhibit A if it pleases the court.
QuoteTheSportingnews.com has a salary cap league for free.

And now exhibit B from NB.
QuoteTSN/FoxSports has a free salary cap league but I don't know if I'm liking their format too much.

TSN.com and FoxSports.com have joined forces, you can get to that free salary cap league through either place.  Anyways, the ESPN.com league is 2wice as good IMO from the rules/format I've seen on the TSN one.  But if espn.com doesn't get their crap in gear, we may be forced to try TSN's.

Also I've found a few others through google search, that are free salary cap leagues, but they are small time sites for the most part, and I don't know how reliable they are.  I'll keep looking, and hopefully people on here will still be down to try it, I think the salary cap leagues are very fun, and a good change from the usual head-to-head one team all year leagues.

Have you played in a salary cap league in other years before this one RS?

Good stuff Joneszilla.

I've already got 2 replies counting Zanshin's that have already gotten into too many leagues which is understandable since stupid espn took so long to get this thing going.

I'm tellin you all though, it's a different league/format than the same old "you draft a team and are basically stuck with same players all year long" leagues.

Give it a try. ;D

Here's the scoring for those who haven't read the rules.  Pay attention to the one in bold for it is different than most leagues and can effect what defenses you pick.

QuoteScoring System: The Game scoring system is as follows:
All positions points per player (QB, RB, WR, K)

6 pts per rushing, receiving or return TD
4 pts per passing touchdown(TD)
3 pts per field goal (FG) made
2 pts per passing, rushing or receiving 2 pt conversion
1 pt per 10 yards rushing or receiving
1 pt per 25 yards passing
1 pt per extra point (XP) made

Defensive/Special Teams (D)
10 pts for 0 points allowed
7 pts for 2-6 points allowed
4 pts for 7-13 points allowed
1 pt for 14-17 points allowed
0 pts for 18-21 points allowed (note: team defense is responsible for all points allowed)
-1 pts for 22-27 points allowed
-4 pts for 28-34 points allowed
-7 pts for 35-45 points allowed
-10 pts for 46+ points allowed
5 pts per team win
3 pts per defensive or special teams TD
2 pts per interception
2 pts per fumble recovery
2 pts per blocked punt, point after touchdown or FG (note: a deflected kick of any kind does not receive points)
2 pts per safety
1 pt per sack

On defense, you get the points for all special teams TDs and when picking a defense note that you get 5 points for the win, so pick accordingly.  It helps a LOT each week when your defense gets a win plus points for the other things they do.

Oh and read the rules on "renogotiating".  Basically it is a rule where if you have a player locked in at a salary, say at 6.0 and he has a terrible week and his market value goes down -0.4 to 5.6  you then can hit the "renogotiate" link and your player will then be locked in at 5.6 instead of stuck at 6.0 and you gain 0.4 to spend on the rest of your team.

This part is important too, even if you decide you don't want to keep the player after his poor performance, you must hit the renegotiate button BEFORE you release him, that will add 0.4 to your team, then you can release him.

If that doesn't make sense, read the rules.  ;D

Title: Re:Salary cap league is ON..and still FREE

so when do we see what players everyone had on their teams?  and when does the renegotiate feature started?
Title: Re:Salary cap league is ON..and still FREE
Post by: RomeyRome on September 09, 2003, 04:58:51 PM
For some reason it is all wierd, they are taking awhile.  But to see what players other people had, you click on the link to their team name, and then on the next page, click on the link that says

WEEK 1

and that should show you who they had.  Good stuff MURP, but it's a long season. ;)

You can go push renogotiate now, but considering how many points you got, I think you might not get a dang thing.  The difficult part of this game is that the players salaries go up FAST and rarely go down and when they do go down it is usually slow.
Title: Re:Salary cap league is ON..and still FREE
Post by: RomeyRome on September 11, 2003, 09:32:51 PM
I forgot the rules, so just a heads up.  In this league, your OFFENSIVE players do NOT get penalized for fumbles and INTs thrown.  So if you have Culpepper and he throws 3 INTs and fumbles 2wice, but throws for 2 TDs and 250 yds.  Then you get credit for the 2 TDs and 250 yards without getting any points taken away for the INTs and fumbles.

Your defense does get credit of course when they intercept a pass or recover a fumble, but the offense doesn't get penalized for it.  I don't know why it is that way, maybe to make the league more offensive focused/more points.

that still doesnt answer the obvious flaw in the game.   Why does a player with 2 horrible performances go up in price?   I can understand when Priest Holmes and Culpepper go up fast.  I cant understand why McNabb would go up in price at all.

Its like a player in Madden having an terrible season and getting a much better rating in the next release.

I'll tell you this, it doesn't matter how bad he plays in real life, if in the salary cap league he scores even 10-15 points, he is going to go up.  Yeah he played like a horses azz in real life, but he still scored some points, therefore he doesn't go down.

He has averaged 11 points a game, that is why he hasn't gone down.  This game is VERY flawed, but it is fantasy, so even if he sucks in real life, if he gets points, he ain't going down.

This will only get harder as byes come, and prices go up.

What do you do when you have a guy on bye?  Especially when he's locked in at like 1.0 under his market value?   I can't get anyone as good. And if i drop him and pick him up after the bye, i gotta search for another 1.0 from some other position.  Am i farged up in my thinking here?

Title: Re:Salary cap league is ON..and still FREE
Post by: RomeyRome on October 09, 2003, 06:37:18 PM
Joneszilla you have to just make that decision.  One thing you can do is look at the schedule after the bye, if a player has a bye, and then has a bunch of favorable matchups after that you might keep him.  If he has a bunch of horrible matchups then you might consider someone else.

It's the toughest part of this league format, byes and injuries while keeping up on your cap issues.  Players will only go up more and more so it gets harder to field a competitive team all the way through.  You just have to figure out which players are irreplacable and which ones aren't, and which positions are most important to you.

no way in hell!  ;D

Looks like we were both wrong.  :(   33 points from the Rams D gave RS22 the lead.

If you haven't forgotten, McNabb is playing Leaf like. :bash :boom

I didn't even realize that I'm talking about my CFFFL3 team in the salary cap league.

Well in this league I've tried to stick with Gannon bkuz I have him for so cheap, but dang is he killing me!!!!!

ho-hum, as predicted...Cohn-humpers are atop the standings.

seriously, this is where the Cohn-humpers must nut up and prove their skills.  Marvin Harrison and 2 others on my roster whose market values are way more than their locked values have byes, and I must make a hasty, unemotional, Banneresque move.  So long, suckas... :-*

I say you keep them all and score under 50 points this week.  Yeah, that's the ticket ;)

Boldin was on bye so i decided to make a move and pick up somebody, it came down to Troy Brown or Stallworth.... but then I had this great idea to pick up James Thrash.  Damn, i hate being a homer.  Too bad we don't get points for dropped balls.  Unless Gannon and Holmes go off tonite, MURP will grab first place.

Or you could look at my lackluster score, or my team's performance in CF FFL, or my team's even worse performance in the Keeper League.

I hate football.

joneszilla, did you ever get in any of those JB jersey auctions?  I can't remember if I sent you that info or not...I know I sent it to quite a few people... ???

Anyway, I'm off to Charlotte for the game...I'll check when I get back.  In the meantime, I made two significant changes this week in hopes of shooting back up the ranks from 4th.

WAR COHN-HUMPERS!!

Congrats Joneszilla ;)  Did you guys find this format entertaining?  It kind of screwed it up that only 5 or 6 people played the whole season vs. getting more people involved.  I love this fantasy football format,  hopefully we can get more involved next season if you peoples want to try it again.  We need more people who will get in and stick through.

Agreed.  I thought it there was a lot more strategy involved in this than normal Fantasy leagues b/c you could basically put anybody you want on your team at any time(if you had enough $$).  I enjoyed it a lot.  :yay
