A splash for Philly: The #Eagles are trading for #Lions star CB Darius Slay, sources say, finishing off talks that first began around the trade deadline. As part of the deal, Slay receives a new contract that puts him among the highest-paid at his position
Only gave up a 3rd and a 5th
IMO it's a good haul for Detroit
you don't have to give up a ton to get a 29 year old corner who is looking to be the highest paid in the nfl
lions were never keeping him and he's not good enough or young enough to create a bidding war
3 years $50 million...$30 million guaranteed
Ehhhh
Good deal for both sides. Now they can get a top notch safety in the draft and still fill the gaping WR hole they have in rds 1&2.

Ehhhh
it's the highest AAV in the nfl for a corner
also because of his age it's a short term deal which is smart for the eagles but it also should minimize what you have to give up for him
if he was 26 and was going to be on the team for the next five years in his prime it's gonna be a lot more obviously
I think a 3rd and a 5th is too much all things factored in but unfortunately due to the Eagles not being able to draft they were as desperate to get him as the lions were to trade him
A 3rd and a 5th are worth a top cb. Ramsey fetched two 1sts last season. Slays not in the same league but there's not that big of a gap between play and draft pick comp
Sounds good to me.

Ramsey is in another stratosphere as a player was 24 at the time of the trade and his team didn't have to get rid of him
zero comparison to the slay situation
Ramsey was also awful with the Rams after the trade
Darius Slay has given up two catches over 50 yards in 6,030 snaps in his career. Both were his rookie year. Zero since then in last six seasons.
so he's due?

Heck, that's a good day for last year's Eagles CBs.
A 3 and a 5 for Slay is highway robbery for Howie.
The only way this doesn't work out is if the season is cancelled or Slay's legs fall off.
Or if it turns out the system is actually garbage no matter who they have out there.
At least it fills a need.

Is Slay a good fit for Schwarz system? He's a very good man, and press corner....I'm no former football player or anything, but I'm pretty sure I haven't seen much of that kind of play from Eagles D lately...

Schwartz was the Lions HC when they drafted Slay based on that I'd say yes

oh really?....why didnt you say it was that easy??...that makes giving up the picks even worse...they should have kept the picks...drafted a "top notch" corner AND safety who are both 21 and dont cost anything
instead a team who desperately needs to get younger and has had a TOTAL of ten draft picks in the last two years paid a corner the highest AAV in the league for his age 30+ years and paid a price for it
shtein why didnt they just overpay byron jones and not give up any picks

Okay. That was a long time ago.
Based on what Schwartz has been running in Philly?

Is this the part where you piss all over a good move so that if it doesn't work out you can rub yourself raw over being right?
no its the part where you say crazy shtein cause you dont know what you are taking about and cant explain how they can easily go into the draft and snag a "top notch" safety but not a "top notch" corner
with everything going on i just cant get that worked up over this. so
1. they needed a corner
2. they got a corner
3. they couldve just paid byron jones
4. if they wanted to trade draft capital, why not just pay up and get hopkins
5. i dont care about giving up the 5. the difference between a 5 and a udfa is negligible.
6. i feel like there is going to be no middle ground with slay. he is either going to be a legendary eagle or flame out faster than namdi.
7. film watching nerds and some of his peers have been praising slay, which is great. who knows how good he will be in a new scheme a year older. but what i dig is his swagger. confidence is such a big part of playing cb. dudes got it.
8. he hated matt patricia so more points awarded
he's right at the age where corners go and go quick so he could have a great year this year and then be done so I don't know about all or nothing
that makes sense but can you remember and eagle free agent signing that was initially great then got bad
ok maybe alshon but he got a few new contracts
it just feels like with this franchise its either a disaster or a hit and generally goes disaster
They have been consistently poor at identifying, coaching, or integrating CB talent for a long time. Maybe it's just been bad luck, maybe it's the fault of people who are no longer with the team, but the track record isn't good. Hopefully the team learned what the issues have been.

Westbrook
Some that will blow your mind:
Chris T. Jones, Greg Jefferson, Bobby Hoying, Stewart Bradley, Chris Cocong, Ryan Moats, Matt Ware, Billy McMullen
Matt Ware, another dude I thought was going to be a star.
Chris T Jones was on his way before he blew out a knee. At least I think it was a knee.
I was getting Damon Moore and Chris Ware mixed up talking dogs. It was Ware I thought was going to turn into a great player. Moore was decent but I wasn't as high on him as I was on Ware. As I recall, Ware had a devastating injury that killed his career, and as much as I'd like to blame a dog I think it had nothing to do with one.
the most relevant picks are the ones from the last two years
Then we're farged

Quote...Put simply, if you add up the $4,300,000 cap number in 2020, the $15,750,000 cap number in 2021, and the $6,500,000 in dead money in 2022, at worst, this is a two-year contract for $26,550,000...

WTF
The Eagles have allowed Drew Rosenhaus to seek a trade for Slay per Diana Russini
He's 32 and wants an extension...his cap number is enormous...Eagles probably asked him to take a pay cut.
QuoteDarius Slay, 32, has a $26.1M cap number for 2023. Said recently he wanted an extension, which conceivably lowers that figure. But the #Eagles likely want him to take a pay cut, one he's unwilling to agree to, hence the report that he has been given permission to seek a trade.
— Jeff McLane (@Jeff_McLane) March 10, 2023
If he's not traded he'll be a June 1st cut in which case the Birds save $17 million with $8 million in dead cap space.
they got mad value out of him but its time to go...cant imagine anyone giving up anything worthwhile for him.
Think he was one of the few contracts that could be feasibly restructured this offseason. If he won't play ball it's time to sign Bradberry and move on. They need exactly one good 30+ year old CB but it doesn't have to be Slay.
Yeah I would be ok with letting him go and keeping JB.
QuoteOne of the Eagles' leaders in the secondary is on the trade block, but he has made it clear it's not of his own accord.
NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Friday that the Eagles gave cornerback Darius Slay permission to seek a trade from other teams. On Saturday, the five-time Pro Bowler took to his Big Play Slay podcast to share that he didn't request a move but understands Philadelphia's point of view.
Early 30's CB's age like vinegar.
Bye.
And if the Rams only get a 3 for Ramsey then wtf would they get for Slay? A 5 and some hot wings?
His June 1st release clears up $17 million which I'd take over a 5th. Howie probably spoke to his agent about an extension/rework to minimize his cap hit, Slay probably thinks he's worth $20 million a year at 32...so Howie said go find a trade so Slay could assess his market value. I think he either reworks or becomes a June 1st release.
Trade and cut do the same thing for the Eagles cap, so they'd take a 5th if they can get it (and they probably cannot). Either way he's $14M of dead money in 2024 which is less than ideal.

Nope
Pre June 1st trade or cut they save $3 million in cap and carry $22 million dead cap space. Post June 1st trade or cut they save $17 million in cap space with $8 million dead cap.

Post June 1st cut/trade his 2024 dead cap is $5,361,000 with $8 million cap savings
https://overthecap.com/player/darius-slay/2358
You're not reading that chart correctly man. That $5,361,000 is if he's a post-June 1 2024 cut, not the 2024 dead cap if he's a post June 1 2023 cut.
If they get rid of him this offseason via cut or trade, it's $21-$22M in dead money no matter what. That's his dead cap number. Pre and post June 1, the only change is whether it's all a 2023 hit or if it is spread over 2023-2024.
Spotrac has slightly different numbers.
Post June 1 2023 cut:
2023 dead cap: 9.255M
2024 dead cap: 12.01M
Pre June 1 2023 cut:
2023 dead cap: 21.265M
2024 dead cap: 0
Sportrac shows his 2024 cap hit at $5 million. Post June 1st matters for both years...there's void/rollover years because the nfl cap isn't a hard cap. Cap savings is the number you're not taking into account. I started writing a summary of a fictional contract but my numbers are off and I really don't care that much to do a breakdown.

Nice.
I will say that Allbright dude is often full of shtein too. Hope he's right on this
Howie is like a cheat code. The Eagles have already kept an absurdly high number of their FAs, got Slay to rework his deal, signed an RB with huge upside for peanuts, and are still in the mix for CJGJ and maybe even Seumalo if they want 'em bad enough.
Plus we're in the third day of the FA period which for Howie is like 1/4 of the way through his annual wheeling and dealing.
Gotta believe Bradberry going for the treasure over the wealth had a positive influence on Slay's decision. Despite his SB hold Bradberry is getting to be a favorite of mine.
Howie pulls off the trifecta of Bradberry, Slay, CJ, holy shtein. I always thought Howie was immortalized a little to much but he pulls this off I'm starting the Mount Rushmore petition. Listen I love what he did last year and 2017 but this was looking like doom and gloom for a bit and Mike McMahon shtein part 2 (well nothing was that bad) but this may be the beginning of a great off season.
Nice deal for a 32 year old
https://twitter.com/AdamSchefter/status/1636508612750106626 20
Now cut him again just for old times sake.
Without seeing the details it looks like the same contract as Bradberry, with Rosenhaus insisting on another "guaranteed" $1 million/year, for appearance sake.
