QuoteMarion Campbell, an All-Pro lineman who helped the Eagles win the 1960 NFL championship and was later head coach of both the Eagles and Falcons, has died at the age of 87.

Campbell played both offense and defense on a great Eagles team and was known for his rough play at a time when players could trade punches on the field without penalty flags being thrown. Campbell never missed a game during that championship season despite playing through torn ligaments in his ankle that required pain-killing shots before kickoff, and again at halftime, for every game.

with the exception of jim brown if you played during a time when there were still two way players in the league then gtfo...congrats on being a warrior giving good effort and "paving the way" but you don't count

he knew...i think most of them did even tho all wouldn't admit it...that's why you see so much anger in many of them aka chuck bednarik are/were super angry old heads who don't consider people like deion sanders real football players

shtein the league wasn't even fully integrated when the eagles won their title and even as late as 1970 only 30% of the league was black...i think you can make a case for the modern era being 1970 but you can also make a case for it being more like 1980

but like 1960 or before....gimme a break

Honestly I think 90% of the players from 1985 wouldn't have a spot in today's NFL. The sport changes too much and the differences in training, recovery, and player analysis are off the charts, and the positions have become specialized like the Olympics to the point where you have to be close to genetically ideal for the position just to have a chance to even get into the league. The on-field responsibilities of the positions have changed a lot too.

With baseball, you can kind of break it down into dead-ball, live-ball pre-integration, and post-integration, and make mostly valid comparisons within eras. Football I don't even know how you compare guys 30 years apart, even if the racial makeup is largely the same, because they play a different sport. Put someone like Adrian Peterson or JJ Watt on a 1960 team and they would be tearing guys' heads off.

And if you put someone from 2070 in today's NFL, they'd probably make most of the league look like old Marion Campbell footage.

1985 and now tho translates as more or less the same sport...fully integrated...there wasn't no wing t bull shtein in 1985...it was essentially the same game....you can see most players in 1985 playing today

the difference is largely off the field...in things like training and practicing

1955 and 1985 tho might as well not even been the same sport and the translation rate of players bwtn those two years would be miniscule

thats fair...obviously the athletes are better now but with modern day facilities and what not, most of the guys from the 80s could hang

baseball is the opposite. the sport has exploded internationally and those zesty doofy white guys from the 80s dont get past AA now

His full name was Francis Marion Campbell who was born in South Carolina and went to college at the University of Georgia.  Francis Marion (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_Marion) was a Revolutionary general who fought mainly in South Carolina, who was called the "Swamp Fox" because of his ability to fight guerrilla-style warfare in that type of terrain.
