Can someone explain what the rollover is? Other than what I do in the rare occasion a woman wants to talk to me.
It's just like cell phone minutes, man. Any cap space that a team doesn't used can be used the following year. It gets added to the base salary cap that applies to all teams.
So every team has a slightly different salary cap.

Just in time for his aw shucks reputation to be left in tatters. I farging love it. I have always disliked him, without really being able to pinpoint why, but begrudgingly respected him. Something about being the son of a famous QB and succeeding despite a lack of physical talents and crafting an innocent bumpkin persona always bothered me.

Haha...yup. Freakishly warm day in late November if i remember correcty. Colts were up 44-3 like halfway through the 4th qtr when McNabb hit Chad Lewis in the back of the endzone. Jim Mora went absolutely berserk and challenged the play, and I don't think it was even all that close. I don't think I've ever seen a coach go that nuts over a td that late in the game with that kind of lead. The Colts narrowly escaped with a 44-17 win.
Edgerrin James was pretty good that day too. Think he had about 200 total yds and 3 tds.

Of course not. In fact, especially with regard to workman's comp, if you're primarily located in and working out of one state, that state's laws are going to be what applies. So the contract could say the laws of Zimbabwe apply, and it wouldn't matter. It's dead letter. In fact, over the years, large numbers of NFL players who never even played for California teams have successfully filed for workman's comp benefits under California law, because CA's laws are so generous and can be interpreted to apply very liberally. So merely stating that the rules of Missouri apply does nothing to benefit the Rams at all, and would be near meaningless in court.
Looks to me what happened here is someone forgot to update the paperwork. But yeah, down with The Man.

All in all, I do too even though I don't think he's fully committed to winning a championship. I think he is, was, and always will be more committed to making money over winning even a single championship....like I think that if you told him that the Eagles would win a chip, but they would break even on the books for that season, I'm not sure he'd take that. I don't necessarily fault him for it because he's in the business to make money, but it doesn't endear him to me either. I think that most owners value profit over chips. Occasionally you get a guy who buys his hometown team like Kraft and it becomes obvious how much he actually values a chip. But he's a rare exception to the rule. I think that had Lurie been able to buy the Pats, he'd also be more committed and have more passion about it. But the reality is that most people don't buy a franchise because they want to win. They buy it because they want to make money.
He's a really good owner. Better than most. Doesn't hurt that he's a pretty good liberal, too. Most of those guys don't care anywhere near as much about winning as the fans do, and certainly not nearly as much as they care about annual profits.
i don't think wanting to make money more than winning is a bad thing simply because winning makes you more money
its when you have an owner that only cares about money or puts money way ahead of winning that it becomes a problem

It's a little silly to think that the average NFL owner is just some wealthy WASP who treats his team like an English country manor, not really caring what the team is doing as long as the checks keep rolling in.
There are exceptions, but for the most part the owners are cutthroat businessmen who are ultra-competitive, ultra-huge fans of football, and are obsessed with something associated with their name being seen as successful and not an embarrassing failure. Sure, they will never care as much as some mentally disturbed fans who get the team logo tattooed on their faces, but I bet they care a shteinload more than the average fan does.

It's a pretty magnificent scene when a gang of 'em 75 strong or more plows through. As many as a dozen four wheelers, scores of dirtbikes, and then a contingent of scooters, etc. I've seen one of the old three wheelers out on the street. Then there are other hangers-on. People in cars riding ahead trying to clear intersections. others filming. It's some shtein. For every big ride like that, there are dozens of small rides by smaller groups, throughout the city, at all times, all days. They do this in other cities but it's biggest in Baltimore because the cops aren't allowed to give chase. This is a shocking rule, but if you think it through, good one. Keeps the headcount down. Some people do die. The riders do run over pedestrians. And kill them. Then there are the accidents with vehicles. I know of one case in which a motorist who hit one of the riders stopped, according to law and custom, and was mob beaten and hospitalized. A citizen. A decent driver/person could easily hit one of these folks, too. They literally wheelie through red light intersections at speed during all hours. It's pretty farging insane. Mad Max, lawless, shtein. I hope to hell it never happens, but if one of these dudes gets under my wheels, I am not stopping. I'm calling 911 for directions to the nearest police station.

some random thoughts
-nfl trying to hide LA at home as much as it can. both primetime games are on the road. their "home" national game is in london. their home opener is a 400 off brand jawn that will go to like 5 markets. obviously scared of how they will look in a huge, likely not full stadium.
-11/15 cowboys games are national. not counting week 17 because nothing is set for that. thats madness. patriots have 9, most of the other good teams have 7 or 8. that means they have a grand total of four (4) 100 games. rome! i see you.
-for the 100th year in a row jacksonville and tenny are playing each other in their only national tv game on nfln. its always the twitter joke event of the year.
-when the matchups dropped i tallied the top 20 matchups. 12 were fox games, 8 were cbs. fox kept 6/12, cbs kept 5/8. nbc got the other 9.
-nfl taking over your life in week 16: thursday dec 22 (eagles) 830, saturday dec 24 100-430-730; sunday dec 25 430-730; monday dec 26 830. utter and complete domination of the weekend and the country. nba should cease to exist.
-the only flex i see is week 11 (gb/dc). otherwise things are looking good unless a qb gets injured.

Last year was the first year in as long as I can remember you didn't make some ridiculous bet (that I won annually) that the Skins would have more wins than the Eagles. Not one Eagles fan on the planet thought the Skins would win the east. So who really knows. Maybe the Skins do well again, maybe the Eagles surprise us, maybe Romo comes back healthy and Dallas (most talented team in the division) is back on top, maybe the Giants defensive additions pushes them to the top. Bottom line, speculating now because we're mocking the Norman signing (which you sort of did here before he signed with your beloved Skins)

Just taking a stab in the dark here, but I'd imagine it's about 2-3% on average. Depends how you define starter though. If the starting RB goes on IR in week 3 and then his replacement goes on IR in week 7, then technically you've just put 2 starting players on IR.

I would tend to think that overall inurjuries are up because players are so much bigger stronger and faster than they used to be. A lot more dudes have spoecialized training regimens, dieticians, physical therapists, coaching, and more training time, so they are reaching the limits of what human bodies can do, and that means fast and strong but also torn cartilage, ligaments, and bone, which can only get so strong.

Some of the players have realized it for a while. Remember how people used to believe that NFL players die on average in their 50s or some such nonsense? All of those claims came from numbers Ron Mix pulled out of his ass in the 80s when he was working the NFL over for one workman's compensation claim after another. He made a killing.

I think not, because muscles can be made stronger than the structure which supports them. With full time dedicated staff, scientifically designed nutrition, etc, we can have made althets--all althetes--stronger than their own bodies can handle. The torn ACLs from non contact incidents are not the same as they've ever been, because all of our athletes, even the scrusb, are now so much stronger and faster than their predecessors, because the equipment they are wearing is so much more effective, etc., that when he plants his foot to cut, the modern athlete is exerting a great amount more force on essentially the same bones and ligaments as the athlete from 40 years ago.

The injuries happen for many of the same reasons that pitchers are blowing out their elbows before turning 25... excessive training and mileage, especially during the developmental years of their bodies. And like dio said, as much as their muscles develope and the amount of force and power their bodies generate, the bone structure is still the same. Imagine putting a Corvette engine on a Model T. The frame couldn't handle the power and would fall apart. Basically the same concept.

The ratings breakdowns I've seen are showing that roughly the same number of people are watching, but are watching fewer games and less time per game. That suggests it's not outrage at anything, but probably a combo of uninteresting games and people having other shtein to watch/do. You'd also have to explain why people are much more outraged at the league during night games than the day games. People say they care about the domestic violence, CTE, anthem protests, officiating, rule changes, etc. (I think I heard one moron blame player showboating for the ratings decline) but it turns out that mostly people will watch games if they are good.
Other than the NBA postseason, have the ratings for any national sports broadcasts truly been up this year? Last I heard, SportsCenter itself was down double digits. I remember hearing about the Olympics, Wimbledon, the NCAA Bowl games, and the Stanley Cup Playoffs all doing catastrophically. There's too many entertainment options now. If you show boring shtein (and sometimes even if you show amazing shtein like the Villanova game), people will tune out.

yes. basically the same people are watching, theyre just not staying with it for long enough to be counted by the ratings. why? likely a myriad of reasons. bad games, bad matchups, other entertainment options, porn, message boards with a .info, etc.
espn is in almost 10 million fewer homes than it was just a handful of years ago. people are not consuming television in the same way they did before and it is becoming increasingly difficult for everyone to reach them.

this is also true. awful announcing, i think, actually went into the numbers and found out the nfl was down with women and that was before this year's ratings drops. my sister, bless her spoiled funhole heart, doesnt watch the nfl anymore because of the DV stuff. she was never super into it, but there you go.

I think a lot of us would like it if the rule was "you touch a woman violently, you're done in this league." Where it gets tricky though is that it can be years before those things get legally resolved, and a lot of them -- like Brown -- never rise to pressing charges. You also don't want one false accusation that never gets legally tested ruining a career. And you can end up with weird cases where the woman is effectively being punished by the league, by depriving the abuser of income that would go to her. So I get that it's not as easy a call as it's made out to be sometimes. But goddamn, people don't want to root for players that should be shunned by society.

It has to be investigated better. Once an issue is known NFL security (which it sounds like they need an overhaul) needs to get on it. Or use a third party investigation firm to keep it kosher.
A false accusation (ala Ezequiel Elliot in the summer) could ruin a guy professionally and publicly. So do the due diligence and then make a decision that the evidence warrants.
Their PR now is shtein and it gets worse. They give the impression that custom cleats, kneeling for the anthem, ticky tack celebration penalties and marijuana are worse than beating the shtein out of a woman.
I do think that once a guy is on record saying that he thinks his wife is his slave to abuse and that he is her god, it's okay to ban him for life. Kudos to Brown for at least having the honesty to admit he feels that way and the basic outline of a conscience necessary to seek the psychological treatment he needs, but regardless, that's a farged up dude who is a danger to others.

It would be great if the last place team, (worst record) was reward with the last pick in every subsequent round following the 1st round. That would at least make Browns games interesting.

Best they can do is be the best one of that division, and climb back into a playoff eligible division, and the worst team in the playoff eligible divisions, gets relegated into the shtein hole division.
That would bring a little fun into the league. They could still reap the financial benefits, and it could give them something to play for. Change financial incentives based on performance, not automatically be gauranteed top pic, and then rinse, repeat. People would tune in to see the worst of games, for the story alone.

the biggest thing leading to the ratings drop is crappy national games, which has fueled this conversation across the country. they did a poor job scheduling. there are plenty of very good 100 and 400 games that nobody sees. everyone, meanwhile, is seeing brian hoyer, blaine gabbert, matt barkley, ryan fitzpatrick, brock osweiller, etc.
What are the city/regional ratings this year compared to previous years? Are the same number of people in the Philly market watching Eagles games as the last decade? Or the Bay Area with SF & Oakland? I'd imagine there's not much difference anywhere except St Louis.
Haven't seen the city-by-city numbers. The NFC day games are basically the same as last year, the AFC day games are down like 7-8% (the AFC is farging awful and its biggest star was suspended the first four games), and the night games are all down like 15-20%.

Add in the refusal of the NFL to allow defenses to actually play defense and the ridiculous number of penalties that are being called and you have insufferably boring games to watch.

I'm in that category as well. I know we're supposed to hate all things Boston/NE, but I have a shtein ton of respect for how they've been dominant for 15 years now and show no real signs of letting up. Once. Just once I'd like to see that kind of dominance from a Philly team. Hell, I'd even watch the Flyers if they were hockey's version of the Pats.
As for the local ratings, regionalized games appear have a minor drop off but nothing too crazy imo. The drop in national games is a clear indication that a combo of poor play, bad officiating, bad teams, bad match-ups, and anything else you can throw in there.

there where 12.07 penalties per game in 1991. this year there are 14.05. a grand total of 2 more penalties per game, which you can easily pinpoint to personal foul calls based on player safety than didnt exist back then. sometimes those calls are wrong, naturally. omg!

this is a fair point and sort of an issue for the nfl
great teams drive interest and ratings. look at the warriors in the nba. look at alabama in cfb, kentucky in certain years in cbb. the nfl has actively tried to avoid having great teams. they want everyone to be "good." there were more close games this year entering 4Q, on average, than ever before. this is what pleases them.
with that, you can get an abundance of "ok" teams which in turn results in terrible national tv games involving the texans, colts, 49ers, jets, etc.
the problem is the rules more than the penalties but the amount of penalties is out of control too...especially the PI calls...they are joke and often ruin games
The brutal thing about PI is how inconsistent it is even within games... whenever it's called, I feel like I saw 5 other passes in that game where the player was interfered with worse that weren't called.
Also seems like an incomplete sideline pass to a good player draws a PI call about 1/3 of the time... as long as the QB is good enough to avoid an INT, there's really no reason to not bomb it deep to an Antonio Brown type repeatedly whenever a team falls behind. If the WR doesn't make the catch, the refs will make it good anyway.
PI calls seem like the strike zone in baseball....varies play to play and game to game. its a really difficult thing to call.

he was not looked highly upon at all coming out of the draft....his accuracy was terrible at the college level which normally is a death knell for success at the pro level....but thats what makes this all the more unreal....an inaccurate college qb 4th rounder just had the best rookie season of all time...only an nfce team not named the eagles could this happen to

Nick Foles threw 7 td in a game once. Now he's backing up Alex Smith. I'll be curious to see how Prescott looks next year, especially when there isn't the threat of a quality QB behind him.
Not saying that Dak is definitively going to crash and burn, because he has everything around him to stay successful, but there's going to be some drop off. He's been able to sustain momentum for practically the entire season. That's rare, especially for a rookie qb. But the off-season has a way of bringing most people back to reality.
Literally anyone could be successful behind that offensive line. It isn't a coincidence that Prescott and Elliott are both having historic seasons. They aren't both the best players in the league, but their offensive linemen might be.
they actually had a better line last year because tyron smith got hurt this year and missed three games i think and they couldnt win a game once romo went down no matter who they tried....so its not like you can put anyone back there and they will be good...and even when romo was in he wasnt nearly as good as prescott has been this year

I've reached the point where I can no longer tell what counts as too big of a contract to deal with. The Saints are $36 mil under the cap next year and are at the shallow end of the spending pool. He's counting for $17 mil against the cap, and cutting him after June 1st would get them $19 mil in dead money.

not sure you can make a definitive statement as to what the raiders would have done without Carr since they played one game without him....also we really have no one idea what the raiders would have won without Carr because he didn't beat any good teams...who knows if mcgloin couldn't have won say ten games...we also have no idea what garrappolo/Brissette would have done over a full season

In the second half of the season, the Cowboys averaged 23.7 million viewers — more than last year's World Series (23.4 million) and NBA Finals (20.2 million), according to data from Fox, which carried Dallas games the most. Late-season games showed double-digit gains.
"There's not another brand in American sports that delivers that kind of impact," said Michael Mulvihill, Fox Sports' executive vice president of research. The Cowboys "have always been the most popular team. Now we have a resurgence, and that's great."
It was looking much worse for the NFL this fall. Through week nine, the league's TV audience was down 14 percent and the networks were forced to give away free commercial time to make up for one of the worst declines in a decade. Once the election was over, fans returned to popular teams with compelling records, including Dallas, Green Bay, Seattle and New England. For the 2016 regular season, NFL viewing finished down 8 percent.

the only way this gets rectified is if someone in san diego can privately finance a stadium and spanos either moves back or sells. and that person must have 2 billion dollars.

Chargers tailgate was lame as hell. Gates didn't open until 9am for a 1pm game. You could get in an hour earlier but you has to buy a pass beforehand and I think they were going for like $75.
I think what largely makes Eagles tailgates so great is that like 95% of the parking isn't owned/controlled by the Eagles.
I only went to one Chargers game and I lived there for 9 years. There's not a great core of fans and everyone is from somewhere else. Still it's a major city and the Padres got Petco built do I don't see why getting a new football stadium is that hard.
Petco is downtown and you know as well as anyone that SD doesn't have all that much available real estate. Not to mention that downtown stadiums for baseball are fine, but kind of blow for football because it kills tailgating because instead of having 1 big stadium lot, you get a bunch of little satellite lots.

On the west coast where direct democracy plays a bigger role in state and local budgets, there aren't as many mechanisms to blow off election results and there is little public interest in transferring tax dollars to billionaires. So you see teams leaving perfectly fine cities like Seattle, San Francisco, and San Diego. And slightly less fine cities like Oakland.

Braman really had nothing to do with the the team staying. It was all worked out between Tose, the city, and the NFL before Braman was in the picture. Without Braman, there would have been other buyers that would have kept the team in the city.
If anything, thank the media for breaking the story because I think Tose was plotting a midnight surprise similar to what the Baltimore Colts did. The news allowed other people to step in and smack Tose around a little until he sobered up and agreed that maybe he shouldn't be an NFL owner anymore.

It's not clear to me how much the league can actually stop it. Al Davis moved the Raiders to LA without NFL permission and won in court. The league also tried to block the Rams going to St. Louis but backed down when Georgia Frontiere threatened to sue.
I think the league has an easier time gaining control over the situation when the owner is acting completely out of control like Tose. Also, whatever financial resources would have been required to sue the league were lost hitting on 17 at the Atlantic City Sands.
With all the money the league has now compared to the 80s or 90s they might be less afraid of another antitrust lawsuit from a team than they were back then. But the game is so big now that even the sketchiest owners no longer try to hire a whole truck fleet to secretly move the team in the middle of the night.

All of these things are awesome. Especially Rosarito. PB/OB are great beach towns. You forgot to add Vegas is only a 4 hour drive. I don't know if it was the Navy, that I had been away from Philly for 9 years, or I was just sick of Cali, but it all wore on me. There are more fake/pretentious people there, everyone is from somewhere else, the sports scene is a joke, and all the stupid hood rats are wannabe gangstas.

In 1998 Terrell Davis rushed for over 2000 yards and over 20 TDs, and put the ball on the ground only twice all season. And he led his team to winning the Super Bowl. If anyone ever replicates that, I wouldn't mind them getting a free pass to the HOF either.

Obviously TD, and Warner to a lesser extent, are testaments to abbrieviated but elite apexes.
What separates them though from someone like Priest Holmes - who also had an incredible 3.5 year stretch before injuries ended his career - is elite playoff performance. TD's playoff numbers are insane. Warner obviously had great playoff success as well. This is why someone like Holmes isn't even in the conversation but whose regular season numbers are arguably as good as TDs in a similar window. It's also probably a subtle reason why Dawkins didn't make it. Other than Favre gift wrapping an INT that I could've caught in the 4th and 26 game, Dawk never really did much in the playoffs (at least that I can recall).
Great player, great Eagle, but if he had 2-3 elite playoff runs he's in today.

i think dawk gets in but it might take him a decade or he might have to get in via the veteran vote in like 20 years.

Actually think he has a better than 50% chance of making it next year. He was already in the top 10 and there's a decent case that he was the best one not picked in that top 10 group. Kind of a weak ballot this year.
In 2018, Ray Lewis is a lock and I think Urlacher has a decent shot although the presence of another far better LB might be enough to delay his induction. Randy Moss is another strong first timer but I don't see how they can put him in right away after what they've done to TO who has a lot of similarities on and off the field.
I think they'll want to put a safety in before Ed Reed hits in 2019, and Dawkins was significantly better than Lynch by any measure other than number of Super Bowl wins and whiteness.

I do hope it's Lewis, TO, Moss, and Dawk next year because that would be an insane class from a personality perspective and a wild atmosphere for Eagle fans. Replace Moss with Urlacher and it's still crazy.
