Title: Keeping The Defense Together

Can the GM do it?

Cox and Logan are musts.

I'd like to see Thurmond and Carroll back - they're necessary pieces

I'd like Thornton back because he's good. He should be reasonable to re-sign. Bair is a good role guy but not sure if I want him starting. And Hart can go away.

Cox is legitimately good. Some of the other guys are pretty good. A lot of them are just serviceable. They were so bad the last few years, that even serviceable looks great. But don't be fooled...most of that crew isn't made up of worldbeaters.

What is Cox going to get guaranteed, $50M?

100% agree on all of this...i will add that there is something to be said for continuity on a defense and understanding the system...for this reason i may slightly overpay for some of the other guys....specifically thurmond...he and jenkins arent necessarily studs but they are the kind of versatile guys who chip covets but who can also play a little and they both are perfect fits for as long as they run this defense

they also still need that classic edge rusher that the offense has to game plan for....graham sucks and they made a mistake cakin him off...the question is does chip believe in a one dimensionbal edge rusher or do his ends/olbs have to be able to drop and do other things

Because apparently mr mds thinks this isn't valid discussion. But he hates sports anyways so it doesn't matter what he says.

And why the lol for Thornton? Is he not a good player? I can't wait to hear how he sucks and of course that's wrong

thornton is ok...doesnt matter if he goes or not....but that wasnt what i was laughing at...i was laughing at your comment...you wrote it like a 9 year old kid was saying it...effin hilarious

He is because you know he's relatively young and still in his prime. Letting him go and hoping to replace him is stupid...you have a starting LDE here now. So why let him go?

his prime is an average player.  take the wild chance you can upgrade that with a 5th round pick

Been waiting for one for years.  DE has been a disaster since Jevon Kearse.

More like Chip takes the wild chance and drafts a marginal seventh rounder in the 5th because he has a torn achilles and a pony tail.

I don't like all this pessimism you guys have about Chip not being fired like he should be at the end of this season.

QuoteWhat the Eagles really are is a 6-9 team that's lost five of its last seven games, has allowed 38 or more points in three of its last four home games, has won just seven of 19 games since last year's 9-3 start, is on the brink of becoming the first team in NFL history to allow 6,000 yards three years in a row, that allowed a franchise-record 34 touchdown passes and lost games by 10, 11, 14, 23, 28 and 31 points.

Title: Re: Keeping The Defense Together

1. "I like Thornton because he's good."
2. You posting this seconds before the defensive starting giving up 100 points per game
3. Lumping in Logan in the same breath as Fletch
4. Calling pedestrian players like Thurmond and Carroll "necessary pieces"
Title: Re: Keeping The Defense Together
Post by: PhillyPhreak54 on December 30, 2015, 06:31:38 PM
1. He is a good player

2. Billy Davis, injuries and Billy Davis were the problems

3. They are both integral pieces and need to be re-signed

4. Good glue players - solid starters who have a place on rosters. You aren't going to have super stars at every spot.

More than one superstar would be nice, however.  Just for the heck of it, anyway.

It obviously wouldn't be a good idea to just blow the whole team up and start from scratch, given how Kelly has decimated both roster and the cap, and cast a pall over Philly as a FA destination spot. You'd be looking at a 3-4 year rebuild in a shtein division that's there for the taking now.

You need some continuity and stability for a foundation, and therefore need to keep some of the adequate players, and coaches that can get the best out of them. An argument to also keep Bradford by the way.

Another thing you need though is real leaders. Even a couple of them would be fine. Chip didn't like the idea of anyone but him as leader and when players stopped liking him and tuned him out he had nobody in the locker room to smack some heads when needed. I'd definitely hold on to guys like Ced and Curry unless there are others better and as cheap you can bring in here (unlikely).

Who on this defense truly couldn't  work in a 4-3 scheme ?
Title: Re: Keeping The Defense Together
Post by: Susquehanna Birder on December 31, 2015, 11:11:54 AM
Logan is a prototypical 3-4 lineman. But he might still work out inside of a 4-man line.

Anything to have less of these godawful linebackers on the field.

If this defense improves...I think it would be rather difficult to adjust to watching speedy, tackling defenders on the field. I don't know what I'd do if my blood pressure didn't spike every 30-40 seconds. What would come out of having a solid defense on the field for once,  would be having 'Hope' for the future and I don't know if I'm built to handle that. Imagine that...Philadelphia with a stout Defense. Pfft. that's silly.

Doesn't seem like there's any defense in the league that is particularly feared right now. A lot of the top defenses statwise are just the teams that barely played against any good offenses. No one has held opponents to under 17 points per game. First time that's happened in at least 15 years, and probably way more than that (I only looked back 15).

Still somehow in the top 10 in points per game, but finally dropped to 11th in yards per game. They're now .4 yards per game worse than the Rams. It turns out there's a lot of bad teams in the NFL right now, and the Eagles loaded up on them early.
