Title: Kiko "Torn ACL" Alonso, Philadelphia Eagle
Post by: MDS on March 03, 2015, 06:40:17 PM
Clearly this deserves it own thread. He went Oregon. He was traded for someone named LeSean McCoy. Chip Kelly is Chip Kelly.

yes I have laughed off that filter too

[chip loves Oregon]

(Hidden part of this trade is that Kiko is actually really good when healthy and Shady was probably not long for this team, but the fact that this is an Oregon player is amazing).

early SPECULATION is that this frees up even more $$ to spend in free agency, and then they will trade essentially every draft pick for MM

accompanying theory (from me): they will sign ray rice

IN

I think they'll sign a guy like Spiller. Herremans interview holds true...they value ol and qb over skill positions.

Bills fans are pissed...guy is coming off a major knee injury and they just got one of the most exciting players in the game...doesn't compute

Shady wasn't going to renegotiate anything.  He had money coming to him and that was that.  It's stunning how fast this franchise says, "farg you" to people who won't play ball with them financially.   Doesn't matter who it is or what they've done... if you don't fall in line, you're out.  No hesitation.

I don't even know what to say now.  Insanity.

hes a white salt of the earthy gritty go getter....racist upstate NY eats that up, as does our beloved coach

getting over the shock of the move, it kinda makes sense in a way. you have to see what else they do. shady is a great player, of course, but the nfl is NOT a running back league anymore.

This feels like a Sam Hinkie move. Trade a player at peak value, at a replaceable position where analytical trends show has a decent chance at a significant production drop-off in 2 years for a player that could be a key cog in your team for a decade.

That said, Shady is special, and right now he's certainly the better player, and I'm going to miss the guy.

his peak value was probably last season....but i get your point

shady is special NOW, but hes probably not going to special next year. they saved a ton of money....which allow them to spend wildly in free agency....which will allow them to waste on entire draft on MM.

this one is going to be fun to watch play out.
Title: Re: Kiko Alonso, Philadelphia Eagle
Post by: SD on March 03, 2015, 07:10:52 PM
Sadly I think mds is right...they're going to go crazy in free agency to fill needs so they can blow a bunch of picks for mm.
Title: Re: Kiko Alonso, Philadelphia Eagle
Post by: AshishPatel81 on March 03, 2015, 07:11:41 PM
Whether or not this move works remains to be seen, but I'm guessing Chip thinks he can pick a 1,200 yard RB off the tree for cheap. Won't be as good as Shady, but good enough. But you get a stud LB for the future on top of it. Sound logic, but still... Shady man..

Can't say I'm surprised that he was traded.  The signs have been there - production dipped slightly, signs of not quite fully buying into the program.

Can't help but have the feeling, though, that it's becoming a total rebuild.

I don't have a problem with the overall idea of trading Shady, my bigger issue is for a dude who has two ACL injuries and by all accounts they did the deal in 20 minutes which means he made a call and they did a deal.  He didn't investigate the market or find out what other teams would have offered, he just jumped at the first deal he got.

its possible....i mean hes never done this before and his sidekick marywitz is a child...coaching is hard enough in the nfl without having to retool an entire franchise....and as of less than two years ago he had never even seen anyone do either much less done it himself

Good points. I can imagine him driving to that JCC thing last night...stuck in traffic and having a thought to make a deal. And in the time it took to get over the bridge to Jersey he's dealt a top RB for a creaky kneed LB. Now granted Alonso has played well but still...

And the GOAT coach says...

no one outside of rex ryan and the cleveland browns are trading for a 12 million dollar rb

theres a reason shady adrian peterson and demarco murray all may switch teams this year....the position has lost a ton of its importance and for that kind of money its lost all of its importance

in other words shady wasnt a "fit" anywhere

but really im still absolutely baffled at how j thinks arians not wanting shady makes him a bad/worse football coach

The former second-round pick still has two years left on his rookie deal, which will pay him $795,546 in 2015 and $991,418 in 2016. Those are bargain-basement prices for a talented young linebacker. Because Alonso missed all of 2014 with a torn ACL and spent the season on the non-football injury list, his contract also dictates that he will become a restricted free agent after the 2016 season as opposed to the vast majority of second-round picks from his class, who will become unrestricted free agents. Barring the unexpected, that gives the Eagles three cost-controlled years from what appears to be an above-average young linebacker.

The minute these homers found out McCoy was traded and are trying to make it sound like this was a smart move.  This isn't DeSean Jackson move dumb but close to it.

def not a homer lol or a chip lover and i support the trade

shadys age is definitely the least important factor in this deal and anyone who uses it as justification for the trade is being silly....however theres been studies done and the numbers show that 26 is the end of the peak years for a running back...imo where age does come in to play here is that kiko is only 24....that matters

Smoothie King better win the SB with this stupid system and ex-Ducks.

hes either gonna win multiple superbowls or crash and burn in spectacular fashion

If the Kiko wasn't coming off his second ACL tear, I might be somewhat supportive.  Also, the fact that it is another Duck is infuriating.  Is this really the best trade that you could get for Shady?  I guess this is the best a guy could get considering it is just his second year in the league and has no idea what he is doing. It is looking more like crash and burning from where I see it.

Yeah I'm certainly not a Kelly worshiper but rbs are a dime a dozen position now plus the shelf life is very short.

High risk ... Kiko never plays at his rookie season level again

High reward ... Kiko helps solidify a part of the defense that is needed, badly.

mack has had two torn acl's....and hes looking for huge money as opposed to kiko getting paid peanuts....do you support caking off mack?

with a 12 million dollar cap number im suprised they were able to trade shady at all but rex ryan is a buffoon

we will see what happens but if they end up with something like this next season

kiko
ingraham/spiller/fill in the blank rb
fletcher cox re up
mack re up or upgrade
two other big defensive free agent upgrades

i dont think too many people will be missing shady next year

It might just be the butthurt talking, but paying Riley Cooper and getting rid of Jackson and McCoy doesn't fill me with a lot of confidence.

I'm super mad about McCoy, you guys. Like, Phreak levels of salt (http://i.imgur.com/0cCCl.jpg).

Shady's deal can be re-done and with a $143M cap paying a dude $12M is not some huge expense - especially for a star RB.

Getting rid of him is insane.

shady already balked at re doing his deal and regardless you dont allocate anything close to that much money to the rb position in todays nfl...whether you agree with that or not you might as well get used to it because to do it is bad business and its part of the landscape now

Had to stop by and get Eagles' fans take on this deal. I get the idea that a stud RB isn't as crucial as in the past but I can't figure out why they trade him for a LB with an injury history, even taking contracts/money into consideration. This seems kind of out of the blue but they've probably been dangling him as trade bait for awhile, is this the best deal they could come up with?

I've more or less been antsy about playing The Eagles in recent years mostly because of McCoy. To me, this isn't just trading a RB, it's trading your best offensive weapon.

On the other hand, this seems to be shaping up to be a good draft for RBs and a team can probably find a quality/decent starter into the fourth round. Maybe the idea is to draft his replacement? I think that's one reason why Dallas may let Murray walk. In Murray's case though, last season was the first time he managed to make it through a full season, he still has turnover issues and he's a little older than McCoy.

Anyway. I was just surprised by the news and there aren't many trades these days that cause me to raise an eyebrow and think WTF?

Now that the initial shock of the trade wore off and I've had a day to digest this I'm happy with the deal. shady wasn't a $10 million player last year...I see no reason he'd prform to that level next season. They took him out a lot on 3rd downs and goal line. Sproles was the best rb on the team the first half of the season.

I hope they sign Spiller. When he's not injured he's a very good back. In a featured role in Chips offense he'll equal 1300 yards.

Murray would be dumb to leave Dallas because he's got it good there with the OL.

But my thoughts are the same on Shady - you're giving away your best offensive weapon for the second year in a row. I know Kelly thinks that ay back can run in his offense ala Shanahan's one cut and go scheme. ANd while it may be true when you have a stud back you have to elevate him over the run of the mill dudes because while a run of the mill dude may get 1100yds in the system a stud like Shady could rip off much more.

He may be on the decline. Who knows? Those people tweeting and writing about the yards after contact and what RBs do at age 27 and older could be right.

lol....yeah or he could have slipped on some ice

the hope is that its not serious not that its not a football injury....part of chips sports science is to be overly cautious add in a head injury and its very possible its minor (if thats possible with the work concussion) but that they will keep him out even after he is cleared

I was at novacare today and was saying to someone about what chuck knoll or John madden or any old head would say about a guy being held out of practice for being OVER hydrated

back then you could be on the verge of death from heat stroke from being de hydrated and they would cattle prod your balls for wanting some water

An Al Bundy reliving the past moment...

Senior year of HS we had our conditioning run and linemen had to finish the mile in 6 min 45 sec

We couldn't touch a drop of water until we finished. It was about 103 degrees and I had a massive case of heat exhaustion. Like body shakes and skin clammy and they thought it was a heat stroke. But water was a sign of weakness and this was only 18yrs ago.

You're right IGY.  Like j said, up until about 15 years ago it was all about sucking it up.  When I did high school sports back during the Coolidge administration there wasn't a drop of water to be found at practice.  We'd get one water break per practice.  No water bottles, no Gatorade coolers.  Had to find the nearest water fountain or garden house.  We just new that was part of playing football or soccer.  We all had the fatigue/border line heat stroke attack where you feel you'll drop any second.  I remember my episode very well. I had to lie to the coaches and say my ankle was acting up and had to see the trainer.  Thank God I went to see him as he said "you don't look good. go drink a lot of water".  Despite all that we never had anyone pass out or rushed off to the hospital.  It was part of the program.
