we started counting from a random point on a random day. the earth's rotation around the sun has been getting ever so slightly longer for millions of years. in fact a day is not exactly 24 hours and a year is not exactly 365 days. we have consistent leap years and leap seconds to keep everyone regimented on the gregorian calendar, and keep mindless celebrations like new year's going.
They weren't lighting off fireworks. They were shooting guns off on the beach. This is the south, after all.
