Title: Rest Of Baseball - 2014
Post by: Rome on January 08, 2014, 02:20:06 PM
Maddux, Glavine and the Big Hurt into the HOF.

Morris out.
Title: Re: Rest Of Baseball - 2014

morris only had a chance because of 1 game....not a hof pitcher by any stretch. laughable even with maddux and glavine on the ballot.

biggio not getting in is just stupid. no one likes them and they used steroids for some period of their careers but bonds and clemens are even worse omissions. love how old baseball writers get to punish people for something everyone did and something thats been prevalent in the game since the late 1960's.

More importantly who were the corksuckers who didn't vote for Maddux? These voters are the worst.

Go read what Marty Noble said...he basically said the speeches were too long among other gibberish.

They need to revamp this system. Include more than just the crotchety grumpy farging newspapermen who will no vote people because they didn't get good quotes from a guy.
Title: Re: Rest Of Baseball - 2014

and people are missing the point even with le batard...why does he have a vote

on what planet is he covering baseball. he does a radio show and tv show. he doesnt have time to go to the ballpark and talk with people or even watch games. i seriously doubt he saw more than 2 maddux starts in person.
Title: Re: Rest Of Baseball - 2014
Post by: ice grillin you on January 09, 2014, 08:16:37 AM
you dont have ever needed to see one pitch by maddux in person or on tv even to know he should be in

baseball nerds dont believe in the look test anyway....its all about stats

id much rather have someone like lebatard have a vote than bill james

i obviously know its all about roids....but the craziest thing to me about the vote was a 500 hr AND 3000 hit guy not getting the requisite 5% to even stay on the ballot

The juice explains the power numbers but not the hits.  I don't care if you rape kittens.  You get 3,000 hits and you're IN.

Title: Re: Rest Of Baseball - 2014
Post by: QB Eagles on January 09, 2014, 05:18:19 PM
The thing that bothers me the most is that it isn't as if Major League Baseball has banned any of these players. If MLB wants these guys out, it has a way of doing so. All of their stats are considered perfectly valid by MLB, too.

The writers make the picks because they are supposed to know a lot about baseball. Not because of their superior morality. They aren't there to be the morality police. Identify the best baseball players for the Hall, iceholes. Leave the enforcement of baseball rules to MLB.
Title: Re: Rest Of Baseball - 2014

I think it's funny that people who never played the game get to decide who gets into the Hall of Fame.    No wonder it's such a farging joke.

Title: Re: Rest Of Baseball - 2014
Post by: PhillyPhreak54 on January 09, 2014, 07:30:33 PM
The egg is mostly on the face of baseball because they turned a blind eye towards the steroids usage. I would bet money that they maybe even encouraged in behind closed doors.

What LeBatard did was not even close to some of these curmudgeonly iceholes who turn in blank ballots like they're the goddamn morality police. farg that...if you're entrusted to vote in a HOF class then you do it. It is one thing if you feel a guy is not worthy for baseball reasons, but to not turn a ballot in because of the length of speeches, because the guy didn't talk to the media or whatever other fairy tales were spun by these clown voters is a crime. Turn in a blank ballot? Vote revoked.

Post by: Eagles_Legendz on January 09, 2014, 10:33:55 PM
It's dumb Bagwell and Piazza will end up getting in and Bonds won't.  That's the problem with the steroid stance.  People who used but weren't definitively caught will make it because they were luckier.  It's lame and makes the process a joke.

I guess Lebatard was either booted from the BBWA or at the very least was stripped of his voting privileges.  I don't agree at all with what he did, though I do agree with why he did it if that makes any sense.

Pretty much. I mean, I still wouldn't put Pettite in since he's a known juicer, but yeah, I at least appreciate the fact that he didn't try to convince the world that water isn't wet.
Title: Re: Rest Of Baseball - 2014

clemens should probably be in for what he did pre roids. pre-toronto 1997 when he was presumably on the stuff he might have had the resume right there. the thing for him was from 93-96 he wasnt at the level he was previously...then magically in 1997 hes the best pitcher ever.

bonds was an amazing player regardless. yes he took roids, yes his homer numbers are inflated but he was unreal before, during and after. you cant keep him out. you just cant. he won 3 mvps and finished 2nd in 2 others before 2001. HE HAD A .480 OBP IN 2007 WHEN HE WAS OFF THE STUFF. the guy was so ridiculously good.

yes both are awful humans and pathological liars (clemens especially). sure, dont give them speeches or the fanfare. but bonds needs a plaque in cooperstown just like ty cobb has one.
Title: Re: Rest Of Baseball - 2014

Bonds was a HOF'er before he blew up.  That's indisputable.  Clemens is a POS Texan.  If he died tomorrow the world would be a better place.

I'm on record as being pro-cheat, btw.  Make roids or HGH mandatory.  More viewing pleasure for drunk Rome.

let me be clear too....i dont have a problem with anyone who feels like roid monkeys should be in...its not some crusade for me to keep them out and wouldnt ruin the hof if they got in....i just personally wouldnt vote for any of them

Me too. Rose didn't bet while he was playing, he bet while he was managing. I'm fine with a lifetime ban preventing him from working in MLB ever again, but his post playing career gambling should not keep him out of the HOF as a player.

Rose got banned as a manager not a player.  That's why his exclusion from the HOF as a player is ridiculous.    If one if the most disgusting people of the 20th century is there (Cobb) then Rose should be regardless of his gambling after he was done playing.

The sanctimonious douchebags who vote for the HOF would never vote Rose in if he was eligible.    He's the greatest hitter in history but his "moral failings" are more important than his on-field accomplishments.   It's hysterical considering the rogues gallery of scum that is already enshrined.

Christ - any white player that participated before 1947 should be disqualified because they aided and abetted state-sanctioned segregation.

but holy shtein detroit is farging retarded for that contract they gave Cabrera.  He had two years left and he's already 31.  He's going to be under contract until he's 40 for AAV of $30M.  He has had issues with his body breaking down already and they gave him guaranteed money for 9 more years.  What the farg

Trout and the Angels had been talking about a 6 year/150m extension this offseason. I'd be bummed if that happens because I want to see him get 400m with an AAV over 40.

if he were to stay healthy and not fall off trout could sign an eight year 320 million dollar deal today and would be the same age as miggy is right now when its up then sign something like a ten year 500 million dollar deal at that time

of course chances are a center fielder is going to somewhat break down in that time but still the monetary possibilities for trout are mind blowing

The Phillips thing - yeah, at the trade deadline, right? He'd answer a phone saying how it was a trade proposal, would discuss with the panel, etc. Brutal.

Color guy - Steve Levy or Eduardo Perez? When I heard who was announcing I thought it was hilarious... yeah, sounds about right for a Marlins - Rockies game.

actually i dont. i have 5 middle relievers. for the past 3 years ive split the difference and gone for holds. it all works out about the same. i go a little under .500 each year if you combine saves and holds together....which is about the same as most people.

in my real league i have jansen, reed and tommy hunter from igy's orioles. pretty good group.

anyway, im pretty the mets wont be missing bobby parnell and his magical ability to get 3 outs when the lead is 1-3 runs or its tied in the 9th inning and hes at home. CLOSERS!! ONLY USE THEM IN THE PRE-ORDAINED SITUATIONS OR ELSE!

I didn't think his bat flip was all that bad, really. I've seen worse with less said about it. But Gomez already has a bad rap for showing people up, so pitchers are probably more likely to say something at anything even remotely close to showboating. If it were Ryan Braun, nothing happens there.

According to renderings released today, the new Braves stadium will be oriented to the west/southwest, which means everyone at the plate will be looking into the sun for 7:00 games.  The MLB rulebook recommends playing fields be oriented to the east/northeast, and there are only a few that point southeast.  Nothing points south or west though

This direct quote ended with:
QuoteIt's hard to play for a GM that just sees you as a number instead of a person. Jeff is experimenting with all of us."
The players who would say this aren't worth a shtein anyways. Castro, Altuve, Villar, Dominguez, Fowler, Springer, Feldman, Keuchel and Cosart don't get toyed with or jerked around, because they're the only ones who are major leaguers. I could guarantee it's someone like LJ Hoes or some fringe-ML bench player.

Also, reading through this, they don't use "purely statistical analysis" and getting Jed fargin Lowrie to be a primary source of information is a joke.

Agreed that they'd not going to toy with the protected and valued prospects or veterans.

I'm curious as to why they offered Grossman an early deal as I don't see him as anything special.

I know that the natives around here are as frustrated as ever. Between the stupid comcast tv situation and them not winning people are tuning out.

I thought they would show more improvement this year and that they were on track to take the next jump in their development.

Singleton should be in the bigs though
Title: Re: Rest Of Baseball - 2014
Post by: Dillen on May 24, 2014, 03:41:16 PM
I still think they won't lose 100 this year. Singleton might be ready but at this point might as well wait for the Super Two deadline - he's still hitting under .250 for his career in AAA, even though you could probably count 2013 as a useless year for evaluation. He has red flags all over the place so waiting a few extra months to see if he can sustain performance doesn't bother me, especially since he's only 22. They'll have Folty and Nitro up over the summer to make the bullpen a lot better if they don't get slotted into the rotation.

The appeal with Grossman was that he had a really high BB% rate and decent tools otherwise - someone you would project a consistent .260/.340/.400 slash. Definitely not groundbreaking but that's a solid major leaguer to move forward with. The deal was only something like 2M a year which would've been fine, but he was brutal this year. He was walking at a decent clip but I don't think I've ever seen anyone ground out to the pitcher more in MLB history than him. He was a worse LF than Carlos Lee too. I'd expect him to get called back up and perform similar to how he did last year, but if not  then farg it, because he's still Robbie Grossman.

I figured Jay would love this...

http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/10964445/mlb-baseball-confusing-contradictory-unwritten-rules

QuoteChaos? Several years ago, Joe Horn, a wide receiver for the New Orleans Saints, scored a touchdown, pulled out a cell phone that he had taped inside the goal post, and made a call, or at least pretended to.

"And no one in football cared!" Baker says. "If that had happened in baseball ... if someone had hit a home run, reached home plate, took a cell phone out of his stirrup and called someone, he wouldn't finish the phone call. There would be balls flying into both dugouts. It would be like a Cuban winter-ball game, with guys running around with bats in their hands. Oh my God, the world would stop spinning on its axis. The ice caps would melt."

McCarthy laughs and says, "Oh my God, he would never get to home plate. Bats would be tomahawking out of both dugouts. Where would a player hide a cell phone, under a base?"

McGehee says, "The game would never get to the next hitter. It would be so ugly."

Says the Tigers' Torii Hunter, "That would start the greatest brawl in major league history. I would drop my glove, chase the guy down, and beat the s--- out of him. And I'd do the same thing if he was on my team. The camera shot would be of his entire team, piled on top of him, pummeling him. I hope that never happens in baseball."

Haha... now that's great.

His mouth didn't stop moving the rest of the inning.  Will Myers certainly got an earful.

And as soon as Ortiz was hit, the home plate umpire issued warnings to both teams.  Then Sox manager John Farrel got tossed for arguing about the warnings, because they weren't able to exact revenge and Price wasn't ejected.  Then more ejections after the benches cleared in the 4th inning after Price hit another Sox player (Carp) - and Price still wasn't ejected, but Red Sox bench coach and acting manager Tony Luvollo was.  Then a Rex Sox reliever (Workman?) threw behind Evan Longoria in the sixth, and he and coach and acting manager Butterfield were tossed, resulting in the Red Sox having four managers in the game.

These teams plain don't like each other.  :-D
Title: Re: Rest Of Baseball - 2014

Issuing a warning after one is colossally farging stupid but it's how Joe Torre wants the games to be run and this is what happens.

You'd think a guy who actually played and managed for decades would understand that but evidently he doesn't give a shtein.

Seriously, that article I posted was so spot on.  MLB has done everything in its power to ruin the game yet amazingly enough it still survives despite the idiocy of clowns like Bud Selig.

That walk off vid was some Pedro Cerrano shtein. Awesome!

And like I said in the nba thread no one likes a fake tough guy. Baseball is full of them. David Ortiz is one and his statement about how next time he's gonna box Price? Yeah right.

He'd run out there juuuuust slow enough so the catcher would catch him or so his teammates would get in front of him.

I'd like to see Utley do that too. But as unhinged as he will ever be is by dropping the world farging champions and the all star response of "boo? farg you"

I love when Jimmy pimps one or when Choke used to smash one against Washington and straight up zoot suit pimp it.

Then Sarge would say "time to hop in that Cadillac!" Which he got in trouble for bc the Phillies sponsor is Toyota

I didn't think that was overly egregious, particularly for a walk-off.  The petulant reaction of the other team is what made it funny.  The pitcher just gave up a walk-off home run.  He should be hanging his head, walking off the field and worrying about getting cut for sucking, not yapping at the guy who just crushed his zesty pitch.

In SF on business.  Saw the Nats tonight at AT&T.  Nice ballpark. Not as overwhelmed as I thought I'd be.  Fun place, very young crowd.  Area around the ballpark was very nice.  Incredible development going on.  Maybe I'm biased but thought CBP was a notch above.

Werth hit a HR.  We all said the same thing, they're looking good without
Gio and wonder boy.

CBP and AT&T are more or less the same, except CBP has a much cooler concourse in the OF. Both are great parks to catch a game.

at&t makes cbp look like the vet

cbp is a nice park in the middle of a parking lot in gross south philly. at&t is a nice park right on the water with the best ambiance one could possibly have. its gorgeous at night with the pitch blackness of the cove and gorgeous during the day with the sail boats. its not even close or a debate.

QuoteThe Miami Marlins seem to have been willing to trade Giancarlo Stanton for prospects Carlos Correa and George Springer. Granting that Correa is an absolute stud, that Springer has hit fabulously well since his callup earlier this year, and that they're under team control for years while Stanton is starting to get expensive, you still wonder if the Astros will end up kicking themselves over that one. Stanton has the 11th-highest isolated power in major league history for anyone with at least 1,000 at-bats, and is a Gold Glove-caliber outfielder as well; he's a generational talent, the kind you can't really overpay for. (Another way to look at this, of course, is that the embarrassing Marlins franchise was yet again willing to trade away an irreplaceable player so as to pocket some of its dole money.)

Quote[Luhnow] told [Phillies GM Ruben Amaro] that we would consider Aaron Altherr. RA said that seemded like a reasonable ask and he was still evaluating where he was. He would get back to us.

Reading that article and the comments all around the internets really shows that at this point people are still clueless as ever. They shtein on the haul they got for Bud Norris - Josh Hader, a LHP who just turned 20 and draws comparisons to Chris Sale while dominating the Cal League, a 1st round comp pick, and LJ Hoes... for a decent #4 or 5 starter.

I wouldn't have done Correa and Springer for Stanton either. I would've put together a package centered around Springer though. Correa could legitimately be the next ARod (but non-douchebag) and a SS is far more important and less abundant than corner OF. They're also trying to shtein on the Marlins for that deal - that'd be the best haul for Stanton by far. By this point he had shown that he had power and an arm but not much else, he was always hurt and hadn't had a year like this one yet.

thats clinically insane

p.s. in 1987, he had a 2.76 era, 1.14 whip and averaged 11.5 k's per 9. his record was 8-16. wins!!

And the Astros could have the batting title winner (Altuve) and HR leader (Carter)

one of these things is not quite the same...

QuoteCharlie Blackmon was 5-for-5 with a home run and four runs scored in the Rockies' 16-2 rout of the Dodgers at Coors Field. It was the third game this season in which Blackmon had at least five official at bats and recorded a hit in each; he was 6-for-6 against Arizona on April 4 and 5-for-5 versus Minnesota on July 12. Only five other players in the modern era (since 1900) have recorded three 5-for-5 or better games in a single season: Hall-of-Famers Ty Cobb (1922), Tris Speaker (1923), Stan Musial (1948), and Tony Gwynn (1993), plus Ichiro Suzuki in 2004, the year he set the major-league record with 262 hits.

Pitcher whom you traded a top prospect for and is throwing well is on the mound

Take him out for a rookie starter

Holy shtein!  I just said the same thing.  This reminds me of Jedd Clampett bringing Ol' Roy in to pitch relief against the Giants.  farging Oswalt.  Blew that game (with the help of the hillbilly) and pitched like a Hoyda against the Cards in the 2011 NLDS.  Hope he's farging his tractor.

remember he went to west and LA after mason. realistically LA was the option in the 9th and it wasnt a good one. really the phllies didnt have anyone on their roster who was getting 3 outs against ricky-white-molitor-carter. it wasnt happening. toronto was better.

The Royals have been fun to watch in these playoffs.  All tight games, great defensive plays, stolen bases and late-inning homers to win the games.

Not a Yost fan but hopefully he learned his lesson the other night. Sit back and let the team manage itself. It's the AL for chrissakes.

QuoteTo the people who say Refs and Umps don't effect the outcome of games you are idiots! Caps never get the same amount of PP in the playoffs, Nats get squeezed over and over after calling the same pitch a strike all game, and the Skins get Refs that just make up stuff and kill our drives and extend the other teams drives.

Kershaw has to redeem himself tomorrow and bring this thing back to L.A. otherwise, I fear for his future post-season psyche and any future hopes of post-season success. I'm getting to the point where it just hurts too much to watch. Time-Warner took the season away from most fans here...they should have kept going in the post-season so far. It's two consecutive 1-game series left. Lets do this shtein! Go Dodgers!

...and we pray!  :evil

Damn I forgot about that time warner thing. How many games did people miss because of it?

Doug Fister was great today and the Tigers should be ripped for trading him away.

Gio vs Vogelsong tomorrow...huge advantage for the Nats there. This is likely headed back to DC

Kershaw better come out blazing tomorrow. After his game one implosion and pitch tipping mini scandal he needs to pitch exceptionally well. Like eight strong because otherwise the relievers not named Jansen are sure to blow it.

Time warner is not in most neighborhoods, and many people have directv.

I missed the whole season. I pieced together a few innings all year...from whatever I caught on television.

There was a disconnect all season, but I was able to capture a lot on radio. I enjoy it better on the radio to be honest.

Interesting - so much for being a big money player if he's not playing in their biggest game of the year.

And as incredible as Kershaw was this year, he imploded when it counted most.  Twice.

Sorry, hbionic.  I know to well how it feels.

Flew out to KC yesterday to visit squaw's family. Flight from Chitown to KC offered free WiFi and live TV access through Dish. Everyone on board was trying to watch game 6 and there just wasn't enough bandwidth for that much streaming, so 1 person in like every 5th row was holding up their tablets so people behind them could see.

Easily the most rowdy flight I've ever been on. It was pretty awesome. Going to head into the city tonight to watch game 7. Should be pretty cool.

I really don't think Gordon running hard right away woulda made a difference. I thought it was an inside-the-parker the whole way too but he was barely at 3rd once Crawford got the ball. Running hard for those first 45 ft shaves like .5 seconds off at most. Feels like creating a story that isn't really there

his preference is obviously 1- chicago 2- boston 3-toronto....but if the blue jays are the only/best deal out there, why wouldnt he take it? plus, im not sure which teams are on his no trade list.

Too bad he has to endure that scumbag Loria and his mini-me jerkoff Samson

he didn't have to sign on and stay there... he gets what he deserves.  after all that bitching about them not putting a team around him he signs himself up until he's at least 31 with a management who has proven they will gut the team whenever they want

But they have 2 championships in 14 years, not bad for a shteinhole team, with a cheap payroll (previously), cheap owner, and non-existent fans.

Dodgers have mule dick in 26 years...and counting.

What does Hockey and Basketball have to do with Baseball? Should you be satisfied that the Eagles haven't won a Championship since forever because the Phils won it recently? If that's the case, you should be more than satisfied with Man U winning the league so many times in the past decade or so.

You bitter fargs. I can see your logic. I guess in my case it's worse when your bitter rivals win three of the last five and their pitcher does things in the playoffs what you're own star pitcher wishes he could do.

I've experienced a fair number of championships in my life including two Phillies, two Flyers & three FSU wins, but I would gladly trade all of them for an Eagles Super Bowl.  That said, the Phillies 2008 win was incredible.  I loved that team and I thought we would have gotten at least one more championship from them.  Not to be, sadly, but hey, that's Philly and that's why we're bitter & cynical iceholes.

farg football in L.A.

It's not necessary. They should condense the league in half:

Keep:

Oakland Raiders
K.C. Chiefs
Denver Broncos
S.F. 49ers
Buffalo Bills
New England
N.Y. Jets
N.Y Giants
Miami Dolphins
Pittsburgh
Philly
Washington
Dallas
Chicago
Green Bay
Minny
Detroit Lions
Baltimore Colts

farg the rest of the league. This new condensed league would then be renamed to "The super bad ass league of football"

That sucks for O's fans although I think Seattle won't get thier money out of him the last two years of that deal. For shore the fourth year. Also, the word is that it's a much less than 50% chance Markakis is in an Oriole uniform next year and could end up in Atlanta.

Werth gets 10 days in jail (and will only spend 5 there) for doing over 100 on the Capital Beltway

Andrew Miller to the Yanks....4/$36M

Indians bullpen catcher Kevin Cash is the new Rays manager

3-way trade....Yanks get Didi Gregorius, Tigers get Shane Greene, DBacks get Robbie Ray and a minor league IF

Ryan Dempster retired

100 doesn't seem that bad for the beltway....you basically have to hit at least 80 just to merge at certain points.
