Those are the types of big ticket players that a d-league team move to Delaware will bring you, sir. Just be patient.

What a terrific guy he is.

I really like this hire.  Any shot they go after Jeff Van Gundy now?  I don't know what kind of relationship he had with Hinkie at the time, but I think they were both in Houston together for maybe a year or 2.

Haha.

I like the fact that they are doing something different.  It's not like Pat Riley is available so why not take a different approach?  Could be a home run or it could be a total whiff.  And I don't think the Sixers are going to go into the season without an actual basketball head in there somewhere, but I really like what Houston has done in recent years and if he brings those types of results to Philly, then at the very least, they'll be a lot of fun to watch.

I don't know anything about him other than being Morey's right hand man and he subscribes to the basketball version of sabremetrics.

He may not be a hoop head but neither was DiLeo. So ill take my chances with him rather than Tony D.

Title: Re: Sixers 2013 Off-Season Thread
Post by: Sgt PSN on May 12, 2013, 08:27:47 AM
He's actually right in that regard.  Right now, the Sixers FO looks eerily similar to the Eagles FO with Banner and Roseman.  Hinkie isn't a basketball head and neither is this stats/analytical nerd they hired last year from Memphis.  If those 2 are "it" then this will probably be just another Sixers disaster in a long line of Sixers disasters.  If they put a basketball guy in there who works well with Hinkie, then I think they have a legit shot at being a really good team.

Of course, it's all pretty irrelevant what they do until the Heatles break up.

Title: Re: Sixers 2013 Off-Season Thread
Post by: ice grillin you on May 22, 2013, 07:33:55 AM
zeller is actually really athletic....the sixers number one need right now are people who can run the floor...a point guard would be preferable and of a course a wing who can finish at the rim but id take zeller who can run up and down with the best of them as a big man

i watched the combine earlier this week and he stood out big time

if zeller can ever acrue a 12-15 footer he can be a valuable nba big....not saying hes going to be great but hes a way better option than olynyk

plus he doesnt have stringy greasy hair
Title: Re: Sixers 2013 Off-Season Thread
Post by: Sgt PSN on May 22, 2013, 08:12:42 AM
I watched about 90 min of the combine too...mostly the centers....and Zeller was tearing it up pretty good.  Olynyk not so much.

I forget who it was, but one of those dudes only registered a 12.5" standing verticle.  Lol.  I can still get up higher than that.

I don't know if I'm late to the party on this or not, but the Sixers drafted Marreese Speights with the 16th pick in 2008.  The next pick belonged to Toronto, who drafted (and immediately traded) Roy Hibbert.  He doesn't really wow you on the stat sheet, but damn if he isn't better than any other big man the Sixers have put on the court since Deke.  Eh, they probably would have traded him within 2 years anyway.

Mannix mock has them taking Olynyk. No.

Gonzaga C Kelly Olynyk tested as one of the worst athletes at the Combine.
Olynyk measured in at a solid 7'0/234. But he has T-rex arms, as his 6-foot-9 3/4 wingspan was shorter than a bunch of swingmen including Otto Porter (7-foot-1 1/2) and Shabazz Muhammed (6-foot-11). For a big man, wingspan is a measurement NBA teams take seriously. Olynyk also did just five reps on the bench press and ranked dead last in the three-quarters court sprint. He'll still go in the top-20 thanks to his raw size and shooting ability, but his stock is not rising.

Post by: Don Ho on May 28, 2013, 08:24:41 PM
Not sure what weight they use at the NBA combine but only 5 reps for a big man and finishing last in the 3/4 quarts sprints is a big fat "No thank you".

If Olynyk has KD's athleticism, agility, handle, hops, jumper, and penis, then I wouldn't care about his upper body strength either. But he has none of that.

I was just a month away from turning 7 when they won.  I remember watching it, but not very vividly.  I remember Mo's dunk at the end.  And I remember being excited for a few minutes and then I probably went to go play with my GI Joes or something, which is probably not all that different than the way I'd react if they won a championship now, either.  Must.  Stop.  Cobra.

Aron hasn't been doing a good job. Then again, he's marketing a bad team which is more or less disconnected from its fanbase, and essentially nothing has happened to give the fans any reason to be optimistic about the future. Can't be easy to market that. Then again, how out of touch do you have to be to think Philly fans want this shtein:

im ready....wish list

first pick

c - stephen adams  - adams wont play for at least a year but this draft sucks and the sixers arent going to be good for a long time....go for the gusto here
pg - carter williams - cant shoot a lick but the sixers need a true point badly...
scorer - caldwell pope - almost as bad as they need someone to fill the basket
s4 - zeller - if i knew he could stretch in the nba id have him at the top of my list...then again if he had that as a strong suit he wouldnt be going at 11

second pick

sg - ricky ledo - would be an incredible value here....might actually fall tho cause hes a knucklehead
pg - archie goodwin - athlete
c - jeff withey - dook blocks everything....would be a solid rim protecter...basically the anti spencer hawes

third pick

pf - jackie carmichael - its about time the sixers got tough
wing - rodney williams - if he makes the league he might win the dunk contest one day

Title: Re: Sixers 2013 Off-Season Thread
Post by: phattymatty on June 27, 2013, 12:56:49 PM
i usually love the draft but yeah this year is depressing.

i want nothing to do with adams...he looked like complete garbage most of the year. but yes he definitely has the potential to bust loose eventually.

if they're going to go C i'd much rather go with dieng.

i'm ok with zeller at 11. and caldwell-pope is going to be a really fun player to watch...maybe not all-star but dude puts up highlights. since the sixers are going to suck regardless, that would be nice.

i like mccollum and larkin over carter williams at PG. depends if they want shooting (mccollum) or passing (larkin). i think larkin will turn out to be the best.

I'm coming around on this trade. ET goes to point which is where he belongs. Noel plus they'll suck next year and get a high pick. And they get NO's first. They weren't doing shtein with Holiday so now they can tank with some young guys.

And they pick Michael Carter Williams.

I was coming home and my buddy texted me they dealt Jrue and a 1st for Noel and I swore off this team for the next few years, luckily the info was wrong. Sixers are going to be absolutely terrible for the next couple years but it's a good deal. Maybe the Hornets can put together a team this year and hover around 6 again, that'd be the shtein and a legitimate reason to be excited.

Settling into the idea now. Wish it wasn't too five protected though. But I doubt NO sucks enough to get into the top five.

Title: Re: Sixers 2013 Off-Season Thread

It's lottery-protected thru 2015. If they're in the lottery in 2015, the Heat get the Sixers 2015 and 2016 2nd rounders

noel and a >5 1st next year for jeru and 42 tonight

cdub was their own pick

still a good deal...three hours ago noel was the odds on favorite to go one overall....so if they properly fold next year you can say this deal got them the #1 overall pick in consecutive years...sounds better that way anyway...and cdub was the guy i wanted at 11

lol @ everyone on espn thinking the sixers gave up their one and jeru for nn....i know they are working on the fly but jesus how could you ever think that was the deal...from the minute they said that i was screaming that the idiots had it wrong...i didnt know it was the sixers that were getting the pick necessarily...i thought they maybe meant that the sixers were giving a 2015 or beyond first rounder and even that made little sense

i wouldnt be surprised if any or all of turner thad hawes go before the season...let the bottom drop out completely...wiggins + 30 mil in cap money next year = FAP

ill miss jeru dearly one of my favorites in the city....but ill take a sixers version of an obama HOPE sign instead

yeah everyone here and apparently on twitter had it totally backwards, so i'm including MCW in it just for the fact that they didn't have to give it up.

best part about it is that next years draft is 10x better than this year and sixers will get two. combo of wiggins-parker-smart-harrison, etc. could be sick.

what if they re-signed bynum just for the farg of it.

It's lottery-protected thru 2015. If they're in the lottery in 2015, the Heat get the Sixers 2015 and 2016 2nd rounders

They owe Orlando a first too which is also lottery protected for a few years then it's lottery protected from 11 on up or something like that.

Title: Re: Sixers 2013 Off-Season Thread

Depends on how far out the protection extends.  Sometimes it reduces to top 3 or top 1 the following year and the Sixers would get that instead

Title: Re: Sixers 2013 Off-Season Thread

They would get the following years pick...it all depends on how the trade is worded. It could be top 5 protected throughout or NO could have it top 5 protected, then top 10 protected or not protected etc.

For instance, the Sixers owe the Heat and Orlando a first. The Heat pick is lottery protected until 2016 (I believe) in which case it becomes two 2nds. The Orlando pick is lottery protected until 2016 (I think), then it's top 11 protected in 2017, then top 8 protected in 2018...then it turns into two 2nds. My years might be off but I'm pretty sure the picks are close.

I think they got Kazemi at 54 and are still owed something by Dallas for Ledo. Not sure if they got anything else out of the Bucks in the Wolters/Ledo deal.

Yep. Sixers end the night with Noel, Kazemi and Carter-Williams, minus Jrue. They also come away with a 1-5 protected 2014 first rounder and potential future considerations from the Mavs and/or Bucks.

Ford:

QuotePHILADELPHIA 76ERS | GRADE: A+

Round 1: Nerlens Noel (6), Michael Carter-Williams (11)

Round 2: Arsalan Kazemi (54)

Analysis: New GM Sam Hinkie came out swinging on Thursday night. The last thing Hinkie wanted was to be where the 76ers have been the last few seasons -- in the middle of the standings. So he blew up the team in an effort to build a foundation of greatness. He made the boldest trade of the draft and walked away with a potential franchise center, a very promising point guard and a valuable 2014 first-round pick from the Pelicans.

It cost him All-Star point guard Jrue Holiday, but in the long run it may be worth the price. With Noel out for the season, the Sixers will likely be in the hunt for the No. 1 pick in 2014. By next July, this team could have four young players with franchise potential on their roster. In three years, they could be wicked good.

Title: Re: Sixers 2013 Off-Season Thread
Post by: Sgt PSN on June 28, 2013, 11:47:44 AM
My draft grade is a B+.  I completely agree with the concept....blow it all up and bring in lots of youth and athleticism.  I'm salty over Jrue being shipped out, but what they're getting in return is a reason for optimism.  I'm weary about Noel though.  Even without the injury, he's still going to be banging down low with buys who have at least 50-60lbs on him...even more in some cases.  Kid needs to bulk up.  The good thing though is that it's all about the 2015-16 season.  So that gives him 2 years to add some weight and learn to play at the NBA level before this team is really looking to make a push to the Finals.  So the fact that there isn't the expectation on him to dominate right away is a good thing.

Let 13-14 play out.  Hope NOLA doesn't pick top 5.  If the situation dictates, they can even package 2nd rounders and a first to move up really high in the 2014 draft if there's a player they highly covet.  2014-15 season is about gelling.  15-16 starts the run.

Oh, they should probably hire a coach though.  That might come in handy.

Post by: QB Eagles on June 28, 2013, 01:13:47 PM
Even if Noel's knee is straight-up another Bynum situation (which seems like the worst case scenario), this was the right move. Jrue was too good to get this team where it needs to be: last place in 2014. Hopefully his presence on New Orleans will keep them around where the Sixers were last year.

It's not bush league, that's the actual state of the team right now. The trades can't be official until after the salary cap is set in a couple weeks. That's why the team is only talking about Carter-Williams and Kazemi.

I think they dump ET though.

This will be a huge season for Thad's growth. He's "the guy" now. If he can learn to embrace that and step into the elite then they'll really be in good shape with the young bucks the next few years.

they all could and should go...im just going by as we stand right here right now...assuming no one goes and they add no one of significance

lol at thads growth...he is what he is....he was being held back by jeru??....hes well beyond the age and skill set of growing...let him grow on a team that thinks they need him to take one of those last steps towards a title and move his ass

im just so nervous that they are going to farg this up...like they dont trade evan turner and he goes for a triple double on the last game of the season against charlotte to move them from the 3rd to the 4th pick

Nah I think Thad has room for growth still.

Kwame Brown is coming back lolol

I'm nervous too but Hinkie seems to have a clue. He's not old guard he buried himself after taking the job and has balls.

Lets see who he picks as coach.

but thad is what you see he is...he is what he was coming out of college...there is nothing left for him...he has a skill set that limits him big time

should add that i want him gone not because i dont like him as a player....but because i really like him as a player...hes great in the locker room...he does everything right on the court...and most importantly he will help them win some games...some games that might cost them dearly

Point is the sixers had no meaningful future a few days ago and they at least have the chance to now.

The team as it was constructed wasn't going anywhere, wasn't luring FAs, and was going to be just good enough to not get a really good pick next year.

Now they roll the dice on Noel & MCW, should be awful next year in a loaded draft, clear cap space, and should get another relatively high pick in NO.

There's at least the potential for a legit team in all this 2-3 years away.

Hinkie is my #1 ranked GM in town right now. Know why? He had the balls to take a chance which could ruin his reputation for life. The Sixers have been mulling around in mediocrity for so long with no way out. Hinkie found that way out.

Haha....the igster wants to get rid of Thad to secure ping pong balls.  Not laughing at you, just laughing because it's funny.  And I kind of agree.

I like Thad, too, but he's not going to suddenly turn into an elite player.  He's a good NBA player.  Solid starter or possible 6th Man of the Year kind of guy.  But dook ain't no superstar.

And I'm going all in on this team for 2015-16 now.  I'm still not stoked about Noel.  I'm still salty over Jrue being traded.  But it's impossible to not like the approach this team is taking.  We've been bitching for about 10 years now about how this team is just stick in the middle of the pack and how they need to do something to make a splash.  Looks like this is it.  Trading Jrue sent a message to the locker room, imo.  If the only AS on the team and a fan favorite can be traded, then no one's job is safe.

Best part about it is that by the time this team should be ready to legitimately compete, the Heat very well could be on the decline.  The Nets will probably be rebuilding.  The Bulls will have D-Rose and ??  Knicks will have an older Melo and ??  It very well could be a bunch of young, rebuilding teams today who are leading the East in 2 years.  Hopefully the Sixers are one of them.

Thad is my favorite current Sixer and one of my all time favorite players, but if a playoff team came along and offered a 1st for him I'd say sayonara. He serves no purpose at this point. They need to put all their eggs in next years draft class, which is the deepest one in years. I'd trade every asset possible (aside from Noel/MCW) to get 2014 draft picks. Even picks in the 20's are valuable. Two years from now they should have a young nucleus and plenty of cap space. They're taking the necessary step back to take two steps forward.
Title: Re: Sixers 2013 Off-Season Thread

I get the point of unloading everything for the future, but I'm not trading Thad to a playoff team for their 1st. There comes a time where you need SOMEBODY on the floor that's actually capable of doing anything so everyone else isn't a complete disaster, and if you do get rid of him, you don't do it for pennies no the dollar. You think MCW is going to develop when the best player he gets to work with is (by far) Evan Turner? Think Noel is going to be able to do anything when the only big guys he plays with are Lavoy Allen and Spencer Hawes?

Trading Thad for little to nothing wouldn't be worth it. He was picked 13th overall in whatever draft it was (2007?), has proven himself to be worth it, so you don't give him for less. Getting two top 10 picks for Jrue is worth it. Dealing Thad for a pick in the 20's isn't. Even if the draft next year is supposed to be deep, look at the history of guys getting picked in the 20's. On any given year, there's like 2 or 3 guys that go between 20-30 that even turn into solid role players. Everyone else is going to be at the very end of the bench or out of the league.

Who gives a shtein who he passes to year 1? I want to tank as hard as possible. With Thad/ET/JRich they're probably good enough to be a bottom five team. I want a bona fide shtein year where they are the clear cut worst team in the league. He can pass to Wiggins or Parker the following year and form a nucleus.

FWIW the worst team in the league hasn't won the lottery since Orlando in '04, so going 10-72 doesn't guarantee anything other than a top 5 pick

I think there's very decent odds Noel becomes a player if his knee holds up.  Maybe not a franchise player but a solid piece.

Agreed that the only thing that really matters is a top3 pick next year though.

I have high hopes for nn...im just saying the odds that he becomes a difference maker in the league are probably less than 50/50...he has quite a bit going against him...he is not the guy that is going to push this team to greatness...whereas wiggins is...and in that sense I don't give a shtein about nn

I think it was simmons during the draft that said theres nothing wrong if you are getting the next marcus camby...I think thats a nice comparison and probably is nn ceiling

with that said i am super excited for this. they are going to win 10 games this season (hopefully less) and the royce circus will be a fun distraction. if they can keep him under wraps they gave up a 2nd rounder for a legit frontline player. if hes still crazy as the day he was born than what the farg, really?

imo if he takes the job its only because the sixer brass has told him they are going to do whatever it takes to tank as hard as possible to get him a franchise guy in wiggy....so if he ends up the coach i think its a great thing for that reason

Didn't catch that interview, but I heard his intro PC and follow up on Mike Miss and I liked everything I heard.  Of all the candidates that we know of, he was tops on my list even though I knew practically nothing of him other than the fact that he worked for Pops, and that was good enough for me.

He's definitely a believer in analytics, or at least believes that it has a role and limited value in the game and player evaluation and that's what got him the job.  In the intro PC, Hinkie was asked why he chose Brown and he said every cliche under the sun and gave every reason for hiring him except mentioning analytics.  Not sure why he avoided mentioning that at least as part of the reason, even though I think it's the primary reason.  Guess they don't want fans to think that they're trying to be the A's and get the best possible results on a limited budget.

I think he's a mix of both, but understands that fans don't really want to hear about mathketball and might try to publicly avoid branding himself as a stat nerd.  I posted a video last week of him giving a coaching clinic and there's a few instances of him using some analytics in his coaching.  Not saying he doesn't have solid old school beliefs, but I think he's open to some new school ways of thinking and incorporates them into his overall philosophy.

Regardless, I'm excited.

countdown of best nba team names....sixers #2

Quote2. Philadelphia 76ers

What a magical nickname — a combination of numbers and letters that sounds so nice, with all those "S" sounds. It carries a shorthand in "Sixers" that is just as good, evokes the city's monumental place in U.S. history, and stands out as one of the great creative nicknames in sports.

The name is obviously a reference to the signing of the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia in 1776, an event worth loud and proud commemoration, and "Seventy-Sixer" has the Knickerbocker effect of working as a shorthand for people from Philadelphia. Most major highways that run through and around the city include the number "76," the Liberty Bell is there, the Founders signed the Constitution there, and the city served as the nation's capital at times during and after the American Revolution.

In other words: Go crazy with the kick-ass historical references, Philly. You deserve it. The inherent patriotism of the name has allowed the Sixers to play with red, white, and blue color schemes and to toss some flag elements into their logo designs. The minimalist white basketball with blue trim, a red "7," and a circle consisting of 13 stars (for the original 13 colonies) is high basketball art.

Alas, the Sixers have struggled to come up with a workable mascot — the downside of the Knickerbocker-style name. The team mercy-killed Hip-Hop the sunglasses-wearing rabbit after the lockout, sending out a bogus press release indicating Hip-Hop had "fallen in love" and left the franchise — not all that different from the time Poochie died on the way back to his home planet. They then asked fans to choose a new mascot form three options — a generic goofy dog (Poochie II?), a basketball-playing moose (getting warmer), and a hooping Ben Franklin (ding!), but the franchise ultimately chose none of the above. Get this right, and the Sixers may ascend to the throne.

Who is doing that countdown?  Never really thought about it before, but yeah....the 76ers as a team name is pretty farging dope in the way that it connects to the city and how unique it is in comparison to other names.  And now that they've come correct and switched back to the old school logo and colors and killed off that wascilly wabbit, they're definitely towards the top of the league in name and uniforms.

I'll take a guess at who the other 4 are in the top 5 (or at least who I'd have up there):

Knickerbockers
Celtics
Trail Blazers
Pistons

I'm guessing based solely on the ties the name has to it's home city.  Bulls has always been a favorite of mine though I have no idea how it relates to Chicago.  It just sounds mean and the logo is pretty badass looking.  And if this list came out a few years ago, I might have the Sonics in the top 5 somewhere.  I guess the Rockets should probably be up there too.  It just makes sense as a name.  Jazz would be great if they were still in NOLA....or even Memphis....or pretty much anywhere except farging Utah.  Whatever.  How'd I do?

Quote

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - At 11:30 on a late August morning at Champion Sports Medicine, 76ers rookie Nerlens Noel was already two hours into the first of his two workouts.

The 6-foot-11 center's blue shirt and white shorts were saturated in sweat. He had a cramp in his left foot and a burning sensation in his hamstrings. And his usually crisp high-top fade needed grooming.

Noel was completing a series of lower-body exercises - squats, hamstring curls, and sprints - leading to single-leg bridges with resistance.

He extended one leg in the air. The heel of his size 16 foot on the other was positioned on top of a medicine ball with his hips off the floor.

Noel's repeated grunts revealed that fatigue had set in. Yet, other than a water break, the 19-year-old's only rest came while walking to and from workout stations.

With his body completely drained, it would have been easy for him to take at least a five-minute break. Most NBA observers believe the Sixers are jockeying for position in what is expected to be a talent-rich 2014 draft. And Noel won't play until December - if at all this season - because of the anterior cruciate ligament tear he suffered during his lone season at Kentucky.

But resting on this day was not an option for Noel, who spent 51/2 months rehabilitating his left knee with renowned physical therapist Kevin Wilk and his staff before moving to Philadelphia earlier this month.

The third of four children, Noel knows a lot about real pain and working past the brink of exhaustion.

And he'll tell you this isn't it.

How to tell the story of a player expected to alter the direction of the Sixers franchise? It starts with his mother, Dorcina Noel, who grew up in the Haitian coastal city of Gonaïves.

She was a standout defender on the women's soccer team at college in Gonaïves.

After frequent visits to America, Dorcina and her now estranged husband, Yonel, moved to the States 23 years ago in search of a good place to raise a family.

The immigrants chose Everett, a blue-collar town four miles north of Boston with a large Haitian community.

"When I came here, I loved Boston," said Dorcina, who still possesses a thick Haitian accent. "But the city was too crowded. So I love this area."

The city has a similar feel to Northeast Philadelphia. It's known for producing Notre Dame football coach Brian Kelly, Grey's Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo, and former Penn State and NFL tailback Omar Easy.

Walk past Lou Diamonds barbershop on Elm Street, and you get the sense of pride in the pro sports squads of Boston. There's a framed cover of ESPN magazine proclaiming Boston "America's Most Dominant Sports City" in a storefront window with a teddy bear wearing a Celtics uniform.

But the pride of this city is the football team at Everett High, where Easy is the vice principal.

The Crimson Tide boast one of the best programs in Massachusetts. Everett has won two mythical national titles, 10 Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Division I "Super Bowl" titles, and 24 Greater Boston League titles.

But when the Noels arrived in Everett in 1990, the family wasn't concerned with the sports scene.

Looking to make ends meet, Yonel worked as a cabdriver, while Dorcina had a short stint at a local hospital. But trying to financially help relatives back in Haiti, the registered nurse quickly realized that working at two nursing homes would be more profitable.

"I still take care of my sisters and my brothers," Dorcina said. "You know in Haiti, they don't have any jobs. People can't do it."

Noel sat on a weight bench in Birmingham and said with conviction that Dorcina will not work another day.

He's determined to use part of this season's $3,172,320 salary to move her out of the lime green duplex on Liberty Street in Everett. He said he will buy Dorcina a home of her choice in Philadelphia or any other place she decides to live.

Being able to provide for his mother is the reason he practiced with the Everett High varsity basketball team as a fifth grader. It's the reason he transferred to basketball powerhouse Tilton School in New Hampshire after two years at Everett High. And it's also the reason he is determined to battle through any grueling workout Wilk or the Sixers put him through.

But nothing he'll do can compare to the physical pain his mother suffered daily to provide for Noel and his siblings: Jim, 22, Rodman, 21, and Nashdah, 14.

Dorcina broke a bone in her back in 1996. She never had surgery.

She feared that time away from work would keep her from providing for her family. So despite being in intense pain, Dorcina worked her two full-time jobs six days a week.

She would leave the house at 5:30 a.m. and wouldn't return until 11:30 p.m. On occasion, she worked 48 hours nonstop between the two nursing homes. But one day she felt a piercing pain shoot up her back while lifting a patient into bed. She was physically and emotionally drained, and Dorcina's body told her enough was enough.

"The thought of her just really pushes me to get those extra reps and push that much harder to get back," Noel said. "That's something that I see as a will. You know, a will to really keep pushing and fighting.

"My mom instilled that in me."

Noel began to appreciate his mother's willpower at an early age.

Jim, Rodman, and Noel would routinely greet Dorcina at home after her evening shift. Noel always greeted her with a drawing of a flower or something else he made at school.

"My mom's name, Dorcina, was my first tattoo ever," said Noel, pointing to the marking on his left forearm. "I was 15. I mean it was my first tattoo. So I wanted it to be something special that had a lot of meaning to me. I love my mother to death.

"The tattoo means so much to me and how much she's done for me and my family."

As a first-round pick, Noel is the one in the national spotlight. However, his siblings' athletic prowess is well-documented in Everett.

Jim was senior captain last season on Boston College's football team. The defensive back signed a rookie free-agent contract with the Seattle Seahawks before being released before training camp.

Rodman is a reserve redshirt junior outside linebacker at North Carolina State. And Nashdah is a 5-91/2 freshman guard at St. Anne's-Belfield, a prep school in Charlottesville, Va.

But athletic genes and a work ethic are just a part of what Dorcina passed along.

Following their mother's lead, they have all volunteered time to give to the less fortunate.

"Our mother worked right up the street from where we had football practice," Jim said. "So we would visit her and would see my mother help out the elderly. That's what really stuck with Nerlens and us ever since.

"Just the fact of helping people and trying to help somebody's life is a big thing."

While at Kentucky, Noel made frequent visits to the Kentucky Children's Hospital and several Lexington-area nursing homes. He even had a special guest with him at the Kentucky Derby in May: Kelly Melton, a 7-year-old boy battling leukemia.

His only regret is that his acts of kindness have been made public.

"I mean I'm not really with the glitz and glamour," he said. "I don't do it to be the lead story of ESPN. I'm doing it from the kindness of my heart.

"I want to be able to have that feeling that I'm definitely doing something good with my celebrity status, because that's the main thing."

His mother wouldn't have it any other way.

At Champions Sports Medicine, Noel briefly glanced out the window at pedestrians on St. Vincent's Drive, paused, and delivered a message for Sixers fans.

"I'm all about winning," he said. "I don't care what the stats look like as long as I'm winning and I'm contributing and really getting my teammates involved."

Noel added that fans should know that he's a blue-collar player with an undying love for the game.

"I mean, whatever I have to do to win over the city of Philadelphia," he said, "I will do."

Known primarily as a defensive specialist at Kentucky, he's determined to contribute on the offensive end. Noel said he was always hesitant to shoot and preferred to focus on the defensive end.

"I never wanted to hurt my team," he said of missing shots. "Now, I'm definitely being able to go in the gym and work on my game and do a lot of repetition.

"I'm definitely going to have a strong offensive game."

But no one knows when or if he'll get to unveil it this season.

The Sixers are in no rush to get him on the court. Though Noel is ahead of schedule in his weight-room workouts, Wilk doubts he will be ready to play before December.

"Right now, the stuff we are doing is not necessarily on the court," Wilk said. "He's got to get used to the court, cutting on the court. Used to playing defense one-on-one. Things of that nature.

"So it's probably going to get pushed a little further back, even though he looks like he's ready."

For now, his regimen includes strengthening exercises designed to build bulk, agility, and proprioception exercises, and non-muscular training.

So far, Noel has bulked up to around 221 pounds from a listed 206 at May's NBA predraft combine.

While he wants to gradually add more weight, Noel doesn't think his slender build should be an issue.

"I'm never going to be a Shaquille O'Neal," he said. "I'm going to be my own person in my own size. I'm not expecting to be that big. I'm who I am. I'm definitely going to progress with my body and my skills."

But he doesn't step on the scale and say, 'Oh, I'm 221 pounds.'

"I definitely just measure it by the heart I have," Noel said. "The determination I have to be a great player."

Kentucky coach John Calipari is confident that his former standout will become a fan favorite once he gets on the court.

Calipari, who was a Sixers assistant coach under Larry Brown, believes Noel was the best player in the draft, despite being selected sixth by the New Orleans Pelicans and being traded to the Sixers.

"Something inside of him when the game gets hairy comes out," he said. "It's that it factor those great players have. That's what I'm telling everybody. I know he hurt his leg, I know.

"But of all those players in that draft, he was one that had that it."

Calipari pointed to Noel's five blocked shots in the last four minutes against Mississippi last season. The coach added that his former player always produced when the game was in the balance, whether it was a steal, a block, a dive on the floor, or a basket.

That's why Calipari believes Philadelphians will enjoy Noel.

"They demand great effort," he said. "They demand that we fight and battle and play that way every day. That's giving us the best you have. And they will get that."

lots of good stuff in here....

QuoteNerlens Noel, Michael Carter-Williams Reunite in Philly

Michael Carter-Williams dribbled the ball up the court and made eye contact with Nerlens Noel. They were the two most athletic and talented players on the court, but their biggest strength seemed to be that they were always on the same page. In this instance, they were in sync for an alley-oop. Carter-Williams waited for Noel to spin around his defender and then lobbed the ball toward the basket. Noel swiped the ball out of midair, slamming it with authority and shaking the backboard.

While this sounds like something out of a Philadelphia 76ers practice, this sequence occurred years ago. Long before Carter-Williams and Noel were teammates on the 76ers – long before Noel had the recognizable flattop – they were playing side by side on the same AAU team. The duo played for the Boston Amateur Basketball Club, one of the most prestigious AAU teams in the country. They were coached by Leo Papile and were a dominant duo, as expected.

The two players had an excellent connection on the court, but they were even closer off of the court. They were thrilled when, on draft night, the 76ers acquired both of them. After all of these years, they can't believe that they're reuniting in Philadelphia. Sixers general manager Sam Hinkie did his homework on the players and wanted them to be the cornerstones of his franchise for years to come.

"I'm really excited," Carter-Williams said. "Me and Nerlens grew up together.  We're best friends.  We played on the same AAU team in high school.  It's like a dream come true.  We always talked about how we were both going to make it to the NBA.  For us to end up on the same team is a blessing.  It means a lot. ... I played two or three years with Nerlens. I was surprised he went sixth, but it's how things end up. It was meant to be. I'm sure he has a chip on his shoulder now, and who knows, maybe that's what he needed for him to be great in the NBA. Maybe this pushes him to work harder. That's what it should do for him. I know he's happy as ever to play with me, also. So to look at it in that perspective is great."

"Once I got back to the room, I had heard that Michael Carter-Williams had gotten drafted by the Sixers as well and I was just thinking, 'What are the odds of that? What a coincidence,'" Noel said with a smile. "Sam is just a genius, thinking of something like that – drafting two players who played AAU together and already have a great relationship. And it's the point guard and big man relationship too, which is big. You have to give Sam a lot of credit for that, for building that as the foundation of the organization."

The 76ers are clearly in rebuilding mode, trading away All-star Jrue Holiday and building around rookies. However, Hinkie believes he's assembling one of the best up-and-coming cores in the league, taking a step back in the short-term in order to form a very strong young nucleus in the long-term.

"As the draft started this year, we were very focused on finding more talented players to add to our team, finding players who are hard workers and compete every day, finding players who could add to this pipeline of what we're trying to build here in Philadelphia," Hinkie said."This is a really big step for us."

Carter-Willians and Noel are excited to be the faces of the franchise in Philadelphia.

"I'm ready," Carter-Williams said. "I think I'm a quick learner and I'll adapt to the NBA fast. I have the keys to the car. I have a lot of confidence in myself, and Philadelphia has a lot of confidence in me.  I'm going to go there and play my best.  I'm just going to go out there and perform every night like I can. ... There is some pressure there, no doubt about it, but I'm just going to use it as motivation and just work hard every day to try to get better and better. I've been dealing with a lot of pressure coming from Syracuse and having the ball in my hands my sophomore year after a bunch of guys left, and it was my job to lead the team. It's not the exact situation, but it's a similar situation. I'm just going to do my best."

"I definitely feel that I'm ready," Noel said. "It's going to be a lot of pressure, but I feel that if I perform at my highest level then the pressure will be gone. I'm definitely ready to take that on and face that challenge. There will be no excuse to not progress the way that I want to progress. Basketball will be the number one priority. That will be my main focus and it's going to take up most of my time. I'll be able to really work on it as a craft and bring my development along."

Both players are aiming for greatness, hoping to eventually become one of the best players at their respective positions.

"If I want to be the player that I want to be, those high expectations are going to be there – that comes with wanting to be great," Carter-Williams said. "I think that me being a bigger guard helps me out a lot. I can defend well, see over the little guards and rebound well. I think offensively, I have a point guard mindset. I've come from the point guard position. I think on the defensive end since I'm a bigger guard, I'm going to be able to defend two or three positions. Either way, basketball is basketball, but I think that I'm a point guard at heart."

"I definitely feel that way," Noel said when asked if he can become one of the NBA's elite players. "I know it will take a lot of work, but I definitely want to put the time and work in to be one of the top players in the NBA. That's a dream come true and I'll definitely take advantage of it so I definitely feel that I can become one of them and reach my full potential. I definitely feel that I can be [the best defender in the league]. I have to do a lot of work and make sure I bring it every night, but I think I can get there."

When Carter-Williams and Noel were younger, they imagined that they were Jason Kidd and Kevin Garnett, dominating their high school peers.

"Growing up, I always modeled my game after Jason Kidd in his prime," Carter-Williams said. "He was a great defender, and I think I'm capable of being a great defender. He passed the ball really well. Of course our games are a little bit different, but we have that foundation. Also, he's a winner and I like to win. Every team I've been on, we've gone pretty far and competed and won pretty much everything."

"I definitely try to watch Kevin Garnett a lot, and I definitely try to model my game after him," Noel said. "I try to play how he plays, especially on defense and especially his passionate nature. I've been watching him play and studying his game from a young age."

The duo can't wait for the season to get started. While Noel likely won't make his Sixers debut until closer to December, he and Carter-Williams are anxious to get back on the court together and attempt to duplicate their AAU success.

"I'm looking forward to it," Carter-Williams said. "I know it's going to be a learning experience. We're going to have a lot of young guys, but we're also going to have some veterans so we're going to learn from them. We're just going to try to bring everything together as a team and be the best we can."

love the return of the high top fade.

hate the head coach's boston accent.

should be a fun season...by that, i mean really painful to watch...but necessary.

Each team sent out a player to address the crowd before tip off.  The Thunder sent out Kevin Durant.  The Sixers sent out Spencer Hawes.  Guess which team is a legit championship contender.

Also, the game is in Manchester Ed, you farging slacker.

Lol.....Hawes tried pump faking from behind the arc and then driving to the basket on Ibaka.  It did not end well.

Evan Turner just drove the lane and had a nice strong finish at the rack. I'm going to cite this 1 specific play and say that he's totally athletic now contrary to what every other play tells me.

No.  They like futbol.

MCW went 3-4 from 3.  Somehow they are running with the Thunder (up 2 at ht), but they are sloppy as hell. A lot of turnovers and blown rotations on d.

they def arent too good to tank...their best shooter is spencer hawes....their pg is an awful rookie their two guard is farging james anderson and they have the worst bench ive ever seen in all my years of the nba

heat heard two things all offseason....that the bulls might overtake them with d rose back and that the sixers were in a ridiculous tank mode and might threaten the all time loss mark....put those two things together in the first 24 hours of the season and you see the result

In a way it'll be more entertaining than their typical mediocre season. They could flirt with various records for terribleness. Any actual wins could be fun and memorable, provided they don't derail the overall mission.

if anything i'd rather get rid of thad, dude goes into total spaz mode the second he hits the lane.
