I placed the following bets last night on total team wins. Thoughts?
Orioles - 78 O
Angels - 91.5 O
Astros 59.5 U
I'd probably bet the same as you on Bal and LAA. Orioles aren't creeping on anyone this year, but I don't think they're 15 games worse than last year. Angels had a horrible April and still finished with 89 wins. Plus they get to beat up on Houston now.
The under seems like a lock for a team that was last in scoring in all of MLB last year, but that Houston line is really iffy because it's kind of hard to lose 100+ games for 3 straight years and they already have 2 straight seasons with 100+ losses. The worst team in baseball only won 55 games last year and they just moved to the tougher league and a very tough division. I guess if any team is "set up" to have a 3rd straight 100 loss season, it's them. But I'd say this one is a toss up.
One of the reasons I took Houston was due to what you said - I figured they'd get beat up by the Angels 15 times..helps two bets at once.
Were they individual bets, or a single bet needing all 3 to happen in order to win?
All individual bets...Im also thinking about taking the Mets 74 O. Ridicule away..

QuoteTwo-time Cy Young Award winner Johan Santana has suffered a probable re-tear of the anterior capsule in his left shoulder and a repeat surgery is a "strong possibility," New York Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said.
Santana needed 19 months to throw a major league pitch after the first procedure, which had been performed on less than a dozen pitchers in major league history.
Now, he likely would need to overcome the surgery twice, this time at age 34, in order to return to pitching.
Santana is in the final guaranteed season of a six-year, $137.5 million with the club. There is $31 million still owed on the contract, all of which is not insured.

100%, the guy is an absolute legend and anyone who doesnt like his voice should be castrated. He is the only reason I still pay for the baseball package - listening to him while falling asleep makes me remember how I listened to Bob Murphy nightly, growing up,

Indeed.
I was talking about this with my biggest customer today. He's from Detroit so he grew up with Ernie Harwell. The days of the iconic broadcasters are over and I hate that. The suits and networks have created clones of forced catchphrases and zesty announcing. Too many of these fargs talk and talk and talk.
Let the game breathe. The icons did it and it works. I watch the Dodger games when Vin's on the call just for him.
As for Soft Batchke and Dumbass Quentin...if Selig has any balls, which we know he doesn't, he'd suspend Quentin for at least 30 games.
The only reason I'd agree with a suspension of any length more than normal is because it was pre-meditated according to a report quoting his tweeter page.
Otherwise, Grienke should have grown a set and manned up and defended himself. It's baseball, tough luck, you're a Hoyda and got hurt.
Scully's phenomenal. He describes the game in such a soothing tone and you always know exactly what's going on when he's broadcasting. Sure, he mixes in stats and amusing anecdotes, but he doesn't do it just to do it and it never infringes on what's happening on the field.

oh how the mighty have fallen
its unbelievable how empty yankee stadium is
Actually I'd say it is believable because of how stupid they got with their pricing. It warms my heart a bit when I see these owners get the shaft from fans because they tried to rape their pockets for big ticket money.
I don't know, they can usually charge whatever they want. Think it has more to do with a whole generation of fans who have never witnessed a mediocre team before.
yeah the new york metro area probably has almost 15 million potential yankee fans...no way with that kind of depth money has anything to do with this many emptys
its way to empty to blame on money...with the amount of emptys there you could walk up and get a 10 dollar seat with ease...i think the biggest factor is not the cost of the seats but the stadium in general...theres definitely a new stadium backlash that has been prevalent since they moved...but yeah the fact that the team is a shell of itself right now has definitely exacerbated it
Exacerbated for the win.

Bad move by Redmond. Should have stood his ground and if he got fired, so be it. Everyone knows how awful Loria is and would probably give him the benefit of the doubt. breast cancer sucks farg it
I know a woman who became a multimillionaire becoming a supplier of cheesy cancer-awareness products like that. Kind of ruined the illusion for me. If you want to help people with cancer, either empty bedpans or learn enough oncology to study cures for that shtein -- or directly give to people who do. Enough with the pink t-shirts.
That campaign is one of the most famous marketing stories of recent decades. People who make it their life's work to con you into buying shtein study it hard.
I'm about sick of this stuff. At least baseball only does it for a day, the NFL does that shtein for an entire god damn month. Pink gloves, shoes, towels, hand warmers, mouthpieces, hats, jock straps, cups, etc, etc. Farg your pink bullshtein.
If they're going to raise awareness, can they at least do it for prostate cancer or boner malfunctions, or something else that dudes are more likely to get? How many dudes actually get tit cancer?
From medicinenet.com (http://www.medicinenet.com/male_breast_cancer/article.htm#how_common_is_male_breast_cancer):
QuoteHow common is male breast cancer?
Male breast cancer is a rare condition, accounting for only about 1% of all breast cancers. The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2010, about 1,970 new cases of breast cancer in men would be diagnosed and that breast cancer would cause approximately 390 deaths in men (in comparison, almost 40,000 women die of breast cancer each year). Breast cancer is 100 times more common in women than in men. Most cases of male breast cancer are detected in men between the ages of 60 and 70, although the condition can develop in men of any age. A man's lifetime risk of developing breast cancer is about 1/10 of 1%, or one in 1,000.

One of my college professors [female] made us do a paper about this based off a study about 'pink washing'. It's disgusting and the businesses who use this as a marketing ploy give very little to the actual cause. The study we did showed on average less than 1% of the pink merchandise sold goes to actual 'breast cancer research'.

Ike Davis is 1-for his last-40!!
The Dodgers have a 16 year old pitching prospect in A ball.
Dillen do you still follow the Astros?
Yep. This season is hard to watch, all the games take forever because their pitching is the worst staff I've ever seen a major league team have.
I was wondering...yeah, the pitching is historically bad. I can't see them all the time because I have directv and they don't carry Comcast SportsNet Houston but I watche last night and saw then in person a couple times...painful.
I like Dominguez and Castro looks like he's developing well.
speaking of painful the marlins are on pace for about 400 runs scored this season....last year five teams had 400 runs at the all star break
Aside from Norris and maybe Harrell, literally none of the guys on that staff are relevant long-term which makes watching the pitching even worse. The hitting's a different story. Castro looks to be panning out as one of the better hitting catchers in the league. Dominguez glove is slick as hell, and now he has 7 HR in the last 13 games and he's still 23. Still have no idea what to make of Chris Carter.
Their system is what makes watching all of it worthwhile. After all the tanking and trading they finally have good prospects in place. Jay Singleton is back off his suspension and George Springer is one of the best OF prospects in all of baseball. I dunno how close you are to Corpus Christi, but those two might be worth watching more than going to an Astros game.
I'm inside the city of Houston so Corpus is several hours away. I wish it was closer because I'd definitely be there. I love watching minor league ball.
Dominguez is the guy they got from Florida right? If that SS they picked last year develops they'll have a helluva infield. Altuve is very good.
Carter is gonna be an Incaviglia type where he mashes but hits .220-.240. If he can hit .260 he'd be a solid DH for them for awhile.
OF and pitching are their immediate needs.
Yeah, dealt Carlos Lee for Dominguez. He was the Marlins first rd pick in 2008 I think, I'd say I'm surprised they gave up on him but it's the Marlins..
They have two top-of-the-rotation guys in their system but nobody else is very promising. Springer will probably be the everyday CF next year. He's getting McCutchen comparisons, I also heard him as a much faster (and aesthetically pleasing) Pence. I'm around Saratoga Springs and the Astros rookie ball team is right down the street, so after the draft I'll get to take a look at this years 1st overall pick for a little while too.

I'm thinking about buying season tickets as an investment. The amount of visiting fans who go plus the usual Red Sox/Yankee/Ranger games will probably pay for the tix by themselves.
I like Bo Porter and found it funny how players were bitching about him shifting defenses a lot. I'm like "you guys are 14-30 or whatever...shut up and play"
in 2 years the astros might win the al west
they have the 1st pick this year and will have the 1 next year. add in their young talent and some free agent fill ins and theyll be legit.

so ever so quietly mlb uploaded like 1000 classic clips a few weeks ago. most are from the 90s and late 80s, when the phillies were god awful, so there are limited videos.
i think this is most of them: http://mlb.mlb.com/search/media.jsp?query=classic%20philadelphia%20phillies&c_id=mlb&start=1&hitsPerPage=12&hitsPerSite=10&trackVal=1
my favorite in the bunch is tony barron face planting into the vet turf: http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=25537131&c_id=mlb
apparently this is all of them: http://mlb.mlb.com/search/media.jsp?mlbtax_key=classic&start=1&trackVal=First&hitsPerPage=12&hitsPerSite=10&c_id=mlb
MLB just took old game videos to a new level. (https://www.youtube.com/user/MLBClassics) Unfortunately the only positive Phillies game on there is Game 6 of the '80 Series. MLB had to go back to the powder blue uniform/Giorgio Moroder soundtrack era to find a good Phils game worth putting up.
I oughta mention that those videos have been available overseas for years, which is why the upload dates are 2010. They were just opened up to the USA.

[Honestly if anyone thought Braun got off on something other than a technicality the first time, they were hopelessly naive.] I'm more excited to see who else gets wrapped up in this. Robinson Cano could be the big fish. Seems like every Dominican in the league was on the Biogenesis mailing list.
Agreed - I want to see the others. Especially the ones who are listed under code names.

yasiel puig is from what planet?
Steroidia?
Any of you been checking out Manny Machado? .320 with 26 doubles, 83 hits, and 5 hr's. His natural position is supposed to be ss, but he's playing third like he's been there his whole life. farging incredible glove and arm. I swear, I've never seen a defensive 3rd baseman any better since Brooks Robinson, and now after coming up after the All Star break last year his bat has been just about on fire. He's absolutely clutch with a .494 slugging %. Check out some of his highlights. He's made some incredible plays. No one in the league covers the bunt like he does. The Orioles are going to have to break the bank to keep this man.
He's incredible. His deke throw to first last year to goad the runner into a trap tag out between third and home was sublime; it was almost as though he knew the runner would assume that the cocky kid would try for the very difficult throw to first, but as it turns out the kid is a baseball player.
They have to keep him.
What a team they've got going right now. A bunch of very good, likeable, young players. If Angelos will pay up, they'll be good for a long time.
he needs to start driving in some runs again....only five rbi in his last 20 games
also he doesnt have to be paid until 2019
He had an rbi tonight which ended up being the only run for the Orioles in a losing effort to Tampa Bay. His 26 doubles lead the majors. He now has 84 hits which is second only to Cabrera. He'll get his rbi's.
He looks like a flat out ballplayer and with all he's doing now he won't be 22 until next month.

37th double....wow
elias: max the nazi the first to go unbeaten in first 16 starts with 120 or more k's
What a weekend in Baltimore for baseball. Well...as long as you aren't outside the stadium in the wee hours of the morning. Then you might end up being one of the 36 that were shot last week, or one of the 14 who died from said gunshot wounds. BUT!...if your not one of those unlucky souls, then you have to love the way the O's are beating up on the Yankees. A tough win thursday night after the Yankees move C.C. to start, beating him with only two real hits. One of which was Machado's double igy talked about earlier. That was a great hit, but the play were he tagged up on a shallow fly ball, beating Romine's weak throw to take third, and then scoring on Jones's swinging bunt was the one that got my attention. The O's never tie it up unless he goes to third on the fly ball. The kid is smart beyond his years.
Last night was the best with the Orioles blowing the Yanks off the field with 11 runs and 15 hits, two of which that were Chris Davis homers. It is good to be an Oriole fan.
Machado also has 112 hits.
Another no-hitter for Homer Bailey. It's the first time the Giants have been no-hit since Millwood at the Vet 10 years ago
chris davis in his last 162 games = .299/.369/.624 with 53 hr and 137 rbi
adam jones two run homer off mariano in the 9th to give the orioles a 2-1 win
Machado's fielding and throw to end the sixth inning was incredible.
ridiculous throw but he only had to pull that off because he initially booted the ball
Cool article

Booted? Ahh, you might say that but he didn't have to pull anything off, even if he fields it clean he doesn't get it out of his glove much faster than he bare handed it off the one hop.
Baltimore sports talking heads are comparing it to Brooks Robinson's play on Lee May's shot that was down the line in the 1970 World Series. Robinson's throw was a one hopper Boog Powell had to scoop, and Lee May was slower than Dog shtein coming out a 100 year old dog. Machado's throw was a friggen' laser that hit Davis right in the chest. Amazing.

HA! I don't think so. Go stroke your RGIII bobble head.
Machado 3 for 5 in a losing effort against Texas. The hits keep coming for the man.
Took off from work today to watch Mark Appel pitch an 11am game in Troy, NY. Stadium was super nice, surprising for a short season-A ball stadium on a community college campus. Missed his first start over the 4th of July weekend when I was out of town, so I was psyched to go considering this is the closest to Astros baseball I'm going to get in the Saratoga/Albany region. I sat a couple rows deep on the 3rd base side and he was just filthy to watch. Was on a pitch count because they took him out after 3. Runs like a total boner. Got promoted after the game, so glad I got a chance to see him before he was gone.
He should debut next June for the Stros, ya think?
Maybe later, Luhnow's really pushing this 'process' thing and not rushing anyone along. Wouldn't be surprised if he made 4 or 5 starts at high A and then gets shut down for the year. I'd say late next year at the earliest, especially because they have a lot of questions about the SP currently in AAA and AA that they'll give a shot to first.
It makes sense to bring him slowly but I figured with him being a college pitcher and a Houston native they'd want him up ASAP.
Will they deal Bud Norris?
On a side note...when did teams start this whole trading of international bonus slot money shtein? Mitchell Boggs dealt to COL for that.

Depends on who is in the rotation next year. Jarred Cosart might get a look at the end of this year and could be ready for full season next year (one of the pieces they got in the Pence to Philly deal, if anybody forgot) but he walks everybody. They have a couple guys putting up great #'s in AAA and AA, but they're 25, so they'll get an extended look in the majors soon or be let go. All of these guys are either guys who really know how to pitch with zesty stuff, or guys with great stuff and don't have a clue how to pitch. If nobody pans out and they deal Norris too, yeah, Appel by next summer could happen.
No idea if they trade Norris, really could go either way. They won't give him up for nothing though - Luhnow said the first year or two are to get volume (dumping everybody worth anything), and then get value. Pretty much just crossed that border and now into the value stage. There's a lot of suitors out there since the SP market seems pretty thin, so if they could coax a top (but not elite, after all, it is Bud Norris) prospect or two that's within a year of the majors, it'll happen.
Remind me how you became an Astros fan again??
I like what they're doing. I was skeptical earlier in the year but the plan is developing nicely. I like Bo Porter too. With the state of the AL West they could make a run in two years.
Because when you're really young, not really close to any teams (Rochester NY), and think Astronauts are cool, you get a favorite team... Seriously.
Porter's a horrible in-game manager and puts out some terrible lineups, but I like his attitude about everything.
OF prospect George Springer is 2/2 with 2 HR and 4 RBI tonight again... been tearing up AAA since his promotion a few weeks ago. .311, 25 HR, 28 SB across AA and AAA. He's going be the first guy in a long list of players that have star power and need to be successful. Thought it'd be 1b Jonathan Singleton (other piece of the Pence deal with Philly) but he's eating shtein at AAA.
Interesting. What year did you begin following? You're about the same age as me right (33)?
Porter will adjust. Once he gets his feel he should grow along with the young bucks.
I read an article on Springer the other day. They're really high on him. How's Correia doing?
Nah, I'm still in my mid 20's with Munson and MDS. I think my first clear baseball memory was a series vs. the Reds in 95 when Bagwell just came back from another broken hand and started wearing that padding. Reds pitcher was frustrated, drilled Biggio, then next batter hit Bagwell in the hand. Benches cleared like 6 times over that series. That's probably the year I started following closely.
Correa's doing great, he was second in his league in BA at around .325, showing a lot more patience than a 19 year old should be with a .420 OBP. Only a handful of homers but solid XBH numbers, power will come since he still physically maturing. I've only seen highlights since he's in class A in Iowa, but stories I've read say he looks like A-Rod in the field when he first started pro ball, real smooth with a lot of size at SS.

Quick Gonzalez story. We saw him in a store years ago out shopping by himself while visiting San Diego. Dbacks were in town for a series with the Padres. Some kids recognized him and were very cool about approaching him. He was so nice and cordial. I was very impressed with his demeanor as he talked to everyone that acknowledged him. Puig snubbed from the AS game as MLB and the fans keeps their heads buried in the 1800s.
Really, who gives a shtein? (Other than ESPN, which has clearly been heavily promoting Puig being in the game.) If he's someone who is going to be a lasting star in the league instead of a Jeremy Lin flash in the pan, then he's going have about 20 more opportunities in his lifetime to make it into the game. If it's about watching an exciting player get at-bats, you can see him do that on nearly a nightly basis if you so desire, and he generally gets more than one at-bat in those games, too. And they count.
Not sure where else to put this, so I put this here:

I don't "care" in the sense that my life is obviously no better or worse because of it, but it's just another reason why baseball continues to fall further and further behind the NFL and NBA, especially among younger fans. And the AS game does "count" for something since HFA for the WS is determined by it, so I know from 2008-2011 I was rooting extra hard for the NL to win the AS game because I felt the Phils had a legit shots at getting to the WS those years. So I wanted the absolute best players rep'ing the NL.
But even more to the point, strictly from a MLB perspective, they should not only want Puig in the AS game, but they pretty much NEED him in it. Want to make the game attractive to viewers, then it might be a good idea to have the young, practically unknown rookie who is batting over .400 somewhere in the lineup. Sure, you can watch Puig any night if you live in the LA market. If you don't, you need to spend some extra coin on the package. Probably not too many people out there willing to put up a few extra bucks to watch a guy get 4 ab's a night.
And it's not that he didn't get voted in that annoys me as much as why. The outdated mindset throughout MLB and the fan base that he hasn't been in the league long enough. Don't know how many coaches, players, managers and fans made comments about him not having earned his stripes yet. Farging Papleboner said something like a week ago about how Puig hasn't been in the bigs long enough. Does this douche bag realize that he made the AS game his rookie year having pitched just 48 innings prior to the break? Puig has over 200 innings played under his belt. He should be in and the fact that he isn't just further illustrates how backwards MLB is.

So what exactly is going on with the trade market? This has been a couple years running now, and it's not just the Phillies. Are teams making a collective decision that an October run isn't worth mortgaging the farm? Are all the interesting players locked down for years? What's up?
people do see to be locking up young players more often now...so that could be some of it...but i know the lack of draft pick compensation that went into effect two years ago i think has hurt the trade market.....and probably also the extra wild card tilting the scales towards their being many more buyers than sellers
which makes it even more ridiculous that the phillies did nothing
Yep - the extra wild card combined with players locked up and teams reluctant to eat salary and this is whatcha get.
Also, there seems to be less incentive to get a trade done by July 31 because teams are a lot less likely to claim players on waivers after the Padres got stuck with Randy Myers in 1998.
There are fewer trades before the July 31 trade-without-waivers deadline, and seemingly more at the end of August.
That abominable second wild card is the gift that keeps on giving.

Then you should have been born 10 years earlier. But since you weren't, I'll simply tell you that an LCS and WS playoff system kind of sucked. Breaking up leagues into 3 divisions instead of just 2 and adding the single WC team was great. Adding the play in game was just a terrible idea.
A single game playoff is not natural to the game of baseball, a sport in which a great team wins 60% of the time and a godawful team wins 40% of the time. I can accept it for tie situations because you have to do something, but it's a terrible indicator of which team is more deserving and I don't like it being automatic every year. I put more faith in the outcome of a 162-game season, even with the unequal schedules and all that.
Usually I like innovation in sports, but not so much in baseball. Now we see teams get hot at the end of the year and win it all, whereas in the past it was much more important what you did over the course of the season vs. a single 15-game tear at the end. I understand the motivations and I'm sure the sport will continue to go in that direction to gin up more interest and collect more dollars, but more playoffs does cheapen what teams accomplish during the season.
I think the Europeans figured out the best way to get crappy teams to maintain interest down the stretch, with the evil genius of the promotion and relegation system. We'll never see that in a US sport but a man can dream.

The whole beat the shtein out of a guy who knocks in a winning run thing is beyond tired.
QuoteSelig also called the Tampa Bay Rays stadium situation "very, very discouraging."
"Baseball needs a resolution to this problem," Selig said with Stuart Sternberg, principal owner of the Rays, in the room listening. "I find it a very, very troubling situation. We were optimistic this was moving in a very positive direction. Unfortunately, it's stalled."
Selig said the situation was serious enough that he was giving "very strong consideration to assigning someone from MLB to intervene in this process, find out exactly what the hell is going on."
"They've been a model organization, extraordinarily capable," Selig said. "They've done everything in their power to make their ballpark situation work. Years have ticked by now with no tangible progress."
The team is obligated to play at outdated Tropicana Field through 2027 and is averaging just over 13,000 fans a game this season. The low attendance figures have led to the Rays receiving millions of dollars in revenue sharing.
"Without that, we wouldn't be able to compete," Sternberg said. "The other owners are looking at it. How many years is this going to be? How much money is it going to be? We should be able to get to the point where the revenue sharing dollars we would receive don't need to be so significant year in and year out."
Maybe if the Rays build a new stadium they can increase their attendance by 100 fans, like the Marlins did (http://www.miamiherald.com/2013/08/01/3537432/marlins-attendance-reverts-to.html) after they put the city and county on the hook for $2.4 billion of public debt. Friggen' Orioles are fading fast. Last night they had a runner on third with less than two outs in four consecutive innings and didn't score. They also left fifteen runners on base. For a team that is supposed to be so good on offense that is terrible.
Hopefully it's just a slump and they'll be firing on all cylinders this last month. This last month of baseball is as exciting as the playoffs.

Yeah, tuck it in the back of your mind and buzz him later in the game. Or, you know, maybe get him out instead.
Also... how was Gomez and Freeman ejected but McCann allowed to stay in the game? His iceholery started the entire thing.
Exactly!
And prior to Gomez AB, as he was digging in, McCann was saying something to him. That is why Gomez swung so hard and stared Mahollaaaaa down. So he rips a homer and the that clown Freddie Freeman has to play baseball etiquette police.
Oh...and its cute when players (or coaches wives [Brett Bielema's old lady]) wives get to twitter to try and talk shtein. Tim Hudson's wife tweeted about how Gomez should be happy this is the last time they play them this year.

i cant sort of see mcann getting ejected but he 1000% did not start it....gomez completely whigged out and lost it.....that incident was ALL on him and mcanns biggest error in the whole thing was not swinging on gomez as he came towards home plate...in fact its a disgrace the braves let him round the bases without attacking him
and lol at reed jhonson actin all tough and literally playing the hold me back game behind someone
since when are the braves the keepers of baseball etiquette? first jose fernandez and now this. reed johnson wasn't worse than chris johnson during the fernandez incident
it has nothing to do with baseball etiquette whatever that is....baseball is corny as hell for even having their own "eitquette"....last night was a manhood thing...before a pitch was even thrown gomez was talkin shtein to mcann....then he swung and missed on the first pitch and went all bug eyed on maholm...then he hit the homer and while he rounded the bases he told every brave infielder to go farg themslves as he ran by them....the braves did nothing

you definitely havent seen the highlites from last nights scuffle yet
that wasnt pimping it...that was full scale out of his mind telling every brave he went near to go farg themselves....he was ripping mcann before the first pitch of the at bat
the hilarious thing about reed is that pendleton wasnt even trying to hold him back...i dont even think he realized johnson was behind him

if carlos gomez was on the phillies and they are 64-100 and he did that id want him shot. you play for a second division meaningless loser team from the suburbs of chicago. get a grip. run around the bases and shut up, no one cares that you got hit in the knee 3 months ago.
now if that homer was to win the game...or was between 2 good teams or something...then ok. start something.
the braves overreacted like little twats, sure. they should have farged gomez up instead of just shouting at him. but if gomez just rounds the bases and doesnt say anything nobody even cares.

ok...now, I think this is pushing it. They're painted like the mascot and probably didn't even think it would be construed as a racial thing.
what if they went in blackface cause the name of the team was the cleveland africans and sambo was the mascot
for some reason theres double standard because we don't see native americans at the local strip mall every day....its like because they are all in essentially internment camps and dying of alcoholism that they are a lesser species than even black people in this country
I understand the blackface argument and I think the native americans need to be respected. I always bring them up when I get into a immigration debate down here with some redneck who goes all "keep 'em outta here! Learn to speak English!". This was their land and all of our people migrated here.
They dressed up like the mascot though. To be admonished for an odious act by some blogger while going to a playoff game dressed as their mascot - I wouldn't label them racists. Should Indian fans not buy any team merchandise? If you're an MLB player should you not sign there or refuse to play there?
I believe the taterskins name is racist and needs to be changed. I don't feel the Indians should be.
the indians name is fine....chief wahoo is a disgrace and i doubt those guys are racist but they are ignorant aholes who deserved to be called out and ridiculed

Its going to be nice seeing the Braves have an early playoff exit...again
that inning is why baseball makes no sense
walk. bunt hit misread by the 1b. pop out a bunt. 2 infielders crash into each other for a hit. ground out that the 1b misplays to score a run. fly out.
what does the back of the baseball card or some calculator tell you about that
It says "shtein happens" during games.
Fernando Rodney is as big a douche bag as Papsmear.
red sox not being very VORPy right now
Yeah I don't like Rodney
and WTF was wrong with that roided out bloke Balfour today?
This has major disaster written all over it for the Tropicanas.
Balfour was ready to scrap.
Good, now we don't have to see that stupid arrow shot shtein from Rodney.
why didnt maddon walk pedroia...then pitch to him with the infield back
boston using their best relief pitcher even though they dont have a lead of 1-3 runs with 3 outs to go!

Doyers/Braves. It doesn't get any worse. farg you Brian Wilson. I hope someone sets that tree fungus on your face on fire with gasoline.
suck it, Atlanta!
Uribeeeeeeeeeee!
Los Doyers! And the fans are there to see it. Amazing they didn't leave in the 7th
Where was The Baseball Sheriff Brian McCann and his deputy Chris Johnson on that one?
Do former Braves come back from the past and give the team a pep talk every time they're in the playoffs? "OK guys, it's your time! This is your time to chock! Go out there and farg it up like the 16 other Braves teams have done over the last 20 years"

I hate that shtein, "Dodgers are going on to the NLCS for the first time since 2009!" Well holy farg! Those poor fans. 3 whole farging years. Poor people.
the braves had 23 more wins than the phillies and were finished playing baseball 8 days after them
MOCK
Did you see that pitch Carpenter threw? Jesus Christ. High and slow, good night.
always good to not use your best relief pitcher because hes only allowed to pitch 1 inning
The team that was pretty much HR or K all season only hit 1 HR in the series and lost in 4. VORP!
Was at the game tonight.
Steve Garvey opens the game with "Welcome to the final game of the NLDS!"
That home run by Uribe ignited the stadium like no other time I've witnessed. It was amazing. I know you guys know the feeling being champs in recent years.
There was nothing like beating the braves in this fashion. The whole place was tomahawk choppin, war-chant chanting, Kimbrel wipe that look off your face, braves go the farg home.
farg. The. Braves.

Every fan base is front runnery to a certain degree. Except Braves, Rays, and Marlins fans. They just simply don't go no matter what. But Doyers fans definitely got sick of McCourt during his last 2 years. I think the Dodgers had the biggest decline in attendance of any team in 2010 and 2011....and this was during a period where MLB attendance was going up just about everywhere else.

Lol. What a bunch of whiny bitches.
That can't be real. The Braves are by far my most hated bb team but to turn your back on a franchise icon just because he picked the opposition to win is beyond petty.
farg that franchise to hell and back.
Deadspin is basically the TMZ of sports, so it's hard to take them seriously, but I can't recall them being wrong or even exceptionally inaccurate very often.
it's not hard to take them seriously at all, they are much more than tmz.
sure they do their "gotcha" stories but the bring some real stuff to the table a lot more than tmz does.
and plus, imo, they know that the mainstream media is ready to shtein on them the first time they make a major mistake so they go the extra mile to fact check everything.

Eh, when they do stories that involve text message screen shots about RGIII going out for a booty call on his wedding day, I'd say that's pretty TMZish. They do a lot of tabloid-type stories on things that are actually pretty irrelevant, like no Braves players wanting to catch Larry's pitch.
But I do agree that they fact check the living shtein out things before putting on their site, even if it is a silly story like this one.
well, he was right so larry got the last laugh.
Colonel McCann and Sergeant Johnson policing baseball from arrogant thugs and pimp artists since 2013!
i was laughing my ass off last night at the bar in the 7th inning when the billy beans bunted a guy over from first to second with no out then singled him home to take the lead...people were looking at me like I was from another planet
if the cards can hold on here adam wainwright is nearing legendary status as a big game pitcher
holy shtein how do you not go to second there
Yep. Before the game I asked a buddy if there was any shot that Waino didn't throw a CG SO. I didn't actually believe it would happen, but this is pretty close. The whole game has felt like Pittsburgh doesn't have a shot though.
Terrible decision by Kozma there.
Edit ^^^ yeah. This whole 'posted new reply while you were posting' feature is cool, but not when you have the worst internet in the world.

Matt Adams should be playing on the offensive line somewhere in the NFL.
Former Astros RP 7.1 IP this postseason - 4 HR allowed. Aside from that one, Melancon blew game 2 (maybe gm 3?) I think, which Pittsburgh won anyways. David Carpenter blew the Braves vs. Uribe. Sounds about right.

So therefore I root against the team because of their fan base.
Dodgers vs A's in the Series...lets go
Wow. Cards-A's. I don't see how a Philly fan can go Dodgers in the postseason unless they are playing the NL East or some super hateable AL team in the Series. If the Cards win, BFD, it feels like it happens every other year.
dodgers are my third most hated mlb team behind the mets and red sox

Great game in Oakland with Verlander not giving up a hit through 6 2/3. Bet no one is watching. They're up against the NFL and NCAA.
I'm watching. Verlander is dominating.
lol Miguel Cabrera during the on field celebration...stops to check his ridiculous earring...oh its there...resume partying

I picked him up in my baseball keeper league this year, but ended up packaging him in a trade to get Cliff Lee and Josh Hamilton back when they weren't sure how long he'd be up. I'd say I regret making the trade, but I won the chip this year so, it paid off.
Holy crap was Rosenthall delivering in the ninth.

Bionic, you must be feeling pretty good. Just beat the ace of the cards staff with Bi Bim Bap on the mound and you still have Greinke and Kershaw if this goes 6.
It's the one saving Grace having been down 2-0...that Dodger's ain't hittin....but it's not like the Cards are blowing us away. Wainwright was the biggest test for this club and they passed. I'm confident about our bats against Lynn tomorrow...but we'll see which Nolasco wants to show up.
I'll be at the game...let's see what happens. I'm hoping our bats can wake up. If Dodgers beat up the Cards tomorrow, it will shift the momentum towards the Dodgers and give them the confidence to go into the last 3 games knowing they can put runs together.
It's been so nerve wracking, I don't know how much more I can watch. It's almost like watching the Eagles with bats.
they left the door open for pms greinke to start on 3 days. then theyd bring back kershaw and the jap in 5 and 6

You'd be surprised how conservative the gazillionaires are in Colorado ski country. One of my gal's friends lives in Breckenridge and she loathes liberals and Obama in particular. I aced her out on Facebook because of her rants about the government. It's not surprising because rich people tend to hate anyone who's taking a dime away from them because in their minds they think they're special and don't owe anyone anything. I mean like God personally touched them on the shoulder and said, "here's a ton of money and good fortune, make sure you never give it away to those with nothing."
The funny thing is other than her hideous views on politics she and her husband (who's more of a centrist) are actually pretty nice people. Get the bitch talking about politics and yikes... it's on like Babylon.

I like Shane. He's my favorite Phillie of that WFC team. As SD said above, he's a great guy. He's a working class dude who busted his ass with limited talent and made a phenomenal career for himself. There's no reason why as an ex-Phillie I wouldn't be happy for him succeeding after he left, especially considering he wouldn't have to beat the Phillies in order to succeed.

Big Papi was un-farging-real during the series though. It's like he was swinging at a soccer ball the entire postseason.
i think the thing that infuriates me most about the boston fans is that they are now manufacturing ways to live in their "woe is me" mentality. these farging cvnts have won 3 titles in 10 years and all i've heard last night and today is them reference 1918 because it's the first one they have won at home since then. hey you farging jagoffs, you don't get sympathy because your first two titles were won on the road.
Pretty much. I'm pretty indifferent on the Red Sox in general because they aren't a true rival for the Phils even though there's some sort of Philly/Boston rivalry with the Celtics and (not that I care) Bruins, but Sawx fan stopped being a sympathetic figure once they won it in 04....especially with it coming on the heels of possibly the greatest comeback in sports history against the Yanks in the ALCS.
Winning a championship at home is only awesome for the 50 or 60k fans who are able to actually go to the game. The other 1mil who live in/around Boston are celebrating in front of a tv no matter where the team wins the series.
you dont even have to like sports much less have to like a rival of boston to despise red sox fans....they are some of the worst human beings on the planet....really new englanders are but red sox fans take it to another level....god i farging hate boston with all my energy
so this is the worst thing that could happen for you sports wise ?
not worse than sox in 2004....no single season will ever top that in terms of pain for me but yes the red sox even being good much less winning a title is straight misery for me

Fans, yes. But I really don't care either way about the team itself because they play in a different league and up until recently, they never faced each other in the reg season. And even now with them being a forced "rivalry" with interleague play, 6 or 7 games out of 162 isn't enough to really get me fired up about them.
the team basically is the fans...this years team was gross but nothing tops that farging kevin millar cowboy up bullshtein
Haha...that shtein was awful.
i guess it's safe to say that this is one piece of baseball memorabilia that igy won't be bidding on.

QuoteAs first reported by the Marietta Daily Journal, the Atlanta Braves will announce their intention to leave the 16-year-old Turner Field for a new stadium in Cobb County, Georgia, when their stadium lease expires after the 2016 season.
(The Atlanta Journal-Constitution just confirmed the report. The announcement was made this morning by Braves officials, including team president John Schuerholz.)
According to the Daily Journal, the new stadium would be completed by 2017, and would be built near the intersection of I-75 and 285. That would put it in Cumberland, closer to Marietta than to Atlanta.
Turner Field is what remains of the Olympic Stadium built for the 1996 Atlanta games. It was converted into a baseball stadium, opened for the 1997 season, and is somehow already the 17th-oldest ballpark in MLB.
Haha. Even fewer necks will show up out there.
Yeah they really need a new stadium!
But hey look on the bright side - they can put 13k seats in there so they can have a sellout...maybe

no it won't.
Cobb County is one of the richest counties in the country, so theoretically it should but the same lame asses who don't go to Atlanta won't go there either.
exactly, the issue is the lame ass fanbase not the location of the stadium.
once the dust settles and the new stadium shine wears off youll see an increase in attendance
outside of boston dc ny philly its 100000000 percent a car culture. people drive everywhere yet hate traffic and long drives. this stadium will get down on the drive and traffic issues for a majority of people who attend braves games.
im not advocating the stadium....its a grotesque waste of public funds....but financially its smart for the organization

location matters....caps are a perfect example....their attendance plummeted when they moved into downtown dc because their fanbase was made of white trash from southerm md who thought they would get murdered if they went downtown to see a game

Is that confirmed? I saw that rumored earlier.
Yeah all the baseball guys I follow are saying its just waiting commish approval because of the cash changing hands

Yankee close to signing the keeper of the unwritten rules Brian McCann for 5/$80M
5 years $85m. They're a joke. I'm in Yankee country and they all love it. How quickly does everyone think it'll turn into a bad contract? O/u set at 2.5 years
it will be a bad contract when he misses all of may and june with an injury of some sort
He's got shoulder problems and his knees will go soon.
He will fit well into Yankee Stadium though.
And he will start a brawl or three when they play Boston

Oh, don't get me wrong... it's a hideous deal. But in comparison to McCann's deal, it's a low mileage owned by a little old lady top of the line Mercedes.
the primary difference in the deals is that one guy is an all star caliber player and the other is a POS
and one team doesnt have a roster full of 40 year old players with 5 year deals

this is the new reality of the open baseball market. i blame amaro.
STL is about to give Jhonny Peralta 4rs $52M....jesus
I wouldn't give McCann Chooch's deal.
And since when is Chooch a POS?
since he turned a hundred and stopped juicing
really i don't care about the chooch deal....its meaningless in the big picture i just wouldn't be throwing stones if i was a phillie fan
He's allowed to juice again. Things will be OK
Also that McCann deal has a club option to make it 6/$100M
He wasn't juicing. He was using Adderall without permission from MLB. He's obtained the proper waiver now, so that won't be an issue. Regardless, he's never been a piece of shtein nor is he now. At the minimum he's a competent defensive catcher and he handles the staff like a professional. He's also a right-handed bat in a lineup filled with lefties. You calling him a piece of shtein is just ridiculous, even for you.
And since when is it verboten around here to mock other teams' ridiculous personnel decisions? Are we not supposed to point and laugh at teams that sign clowns like McCann to horrendous deals just because we have a dipshtein running the Phillies into the ground?
I'm gonna go ahead an mock this deal. Is that ok with you, sweet pea?
fine honey
Dan Haren to Los Doyers....1yr $10m
I like it. Veteran arm. I think he's had elbow surgery if I'm not mistaken...but he's waaaaaaaay better than our #4 we had last season.
Haren sucked with the Nats
Todd loves him.
hes got a 13 incher what can i say
So Scott Kazmir barely played in 2011 and didn't play in 2012 after getting a case of the yips, and was 10-9 with a 4.04 ERA in 2013.
And the A's deem this worthy of $11M/year for two years.
I shoulda stayed in baseball!

Yanks reportedly about to sign Jacoby Ellsbury for 7yrs
lol
7/$153M and an option makes it 8/$169M
Other moves:
-- Baltimore traded Jim Johnson to Oakland for Jemile Weeks
-- San Diego traded Luke Gregerson to Oakland for Seth Smith
-- Texas traded Josh Lindblom to Oakland in a 4-player trade
-- Ryan Hanigan and Heath Bell to the Rays in a 3-team trade
-- Joe Nathan to the Tigers...2/$20M
-- Saltalamacchia to the Marlins....3/$21M
-- Pierzynski to the Red Sox....1/$8.25M
-- Morneau to the Rockies, who traded Dexter Fowler to the Astros for Jordan Lyles and Brandon Barnes
-- Brian Wilson re-signed with LA
and it looks like Beltran could be going back to KC and Granderson might sign with the Mets
I cannot believe that someone paid Ellsbury that much. Even the Yankees.
He'll be lucky to play 120 games.
Oakland's bullpen is forreal.
Nice get by Houston with Fowler.
the ellsbury signing is an all time dumb move....but the yankees simply do not care nor should they

yeah a bunch of old blue haired baseball writers were all up in arms last week about the "slimeball" move. pretentious dicks.
there are some crazy names on that ballot...how the farg is don mattingly not in the HOF?
how is pete rose not in the hall of fame?
also - farg the baseball writers. half of them don't even bother to fill out the ballots unless there's a george brett or nolan ryan eligible. and even then some of them don't vote for dead bang hof's because they called them a farging leech at a bar in 1982.
I like them making a mockery of the process to show up the baseball writers. They are indeed pretentious pricks. Especially the ones who don't vote first balloters in just because.
Aoki dealth to KC
Mujica to BOS for 2yrs $9.5M
if los doyers are just trying to unload kemp just because, its something the phillies have to do if they plan on winning a world series anytime soon
of course THEY SHOULDN'T, because they cant. but they will, because of him.
My HOF Ballot:
Moises Alou - NO
Jeff Bagwell - YES
Armando Benitez - NO
Craig Biggio - NO
Barry Bonds - YES
Sean Casey - NO
Roger Clemens - YES
Ray Durham - NO
Eric Gagne - NO
Tom Glavine - NO
Luis Gonzalez - NO
Jacque Jones - NO
Todd Jones - NO
Jeff Kent - NO
Douche Lo Duca - NO
Greg Maddux - YES
Edgar Martinez - YES
Don Mattingly - YES
Fred McGriff - YES (one of my favorite players to watch)
Mark McGwire - YES
Jack Morris - YES
Mike Mussina - NO
Hideo Nomo - NO
Rafael Palmeiro - NO
Mike Piazza - YES
Tim Raines - NO
Kenny Rogers - NO
Curt Schilling - YES
Richie Sexson - NO
Lee Smith - YES
JT Snow - NO
Sammy Sosa - NO
Frank Thomas - YES (one of my all timer favorites)
Mike Timlin - NO
Alan Trammell - NO
Larry Walker - YES
There are a half dozen other guys I would like to see in the Hall, but Bonds, Clemens, and Maddux were on a different plane of existence from everyone else on the list. And we know only one of them is going in this year.
I'm fine with them being ultra-selective based on talent, but they are keeping out all-time greats because of their personal disapproval. And that's bullshtein.
Rafael Furcal...Florida Marlin
im much more stingy than you J
im OUT on donnie baseball, the crime dog, jack, schill and larry walker

I would agree. I would even say no on Bagwell and Edgar Martinez. Great players, but not on a different plane like Todd said.
I'm meh on McGwire.
Glavine is a NO?
The hell is wrong with you? Dude won 300 games. He's IN.
So is Rock Raines. His stats are debatable but he's my all-time favorite baseball player, so farg you, he's in.
lol at Romey and his man love for Raines (who was a beast by the way). He is Andre Dawson-ish.
I looked at Tom Glavine. I think when lined up with Maddux, and Smoltz, he's definitely #3. Maddux is a no-brainer...Smoltz...well...I can debate it...and depending on what school of thought you come from...should a Hall of Famer be no question or should you make a case for them? I think if you have to make a case, they are NOT a hall of famer.
The only reason Mattingly's even a consideration is that he played in New York. Otherwise, he's Cecil Cooper.
Here's my choices for all that care... and eveyone:
My HOF Ballot:
PED group:
Barry Bonds
Roger Clemens
Mark McGwire
Rafael Palmeiro
Sammy Sosa
Non-PED Group
Jeff Bagwell (yeah, there's allegations...)
Craig Biggio
Tom Glavine
Edgar Martinez
Fred McGriff
Jack Morris
Mike Mussina
Mike Piazza
Tim Raines
Curt Schilling
Lee Smith
Frank Thomas
Rationale:
1. If you're going to let Bonds/Clemens skate by on PEDs, you have to let all of them skate by (Sosa, Palmeiro). I go back and forth about the steroids generation, and right now have the opinion that you almost have to assume that anyone with gaudy numbers like that from the 1990s-2000s were using. Either let them all in or keep them all out.
2. Hard to believe that Mussina a) won 270 games, and b) retired after winning 20. If he pitches two more years, he may have the 300 and a slam-dunk election.
3. I love me the 1980s guys. Reminds me of being young.
Summary
If I had to name 10 (since I believe that's the limit), here are my selections:
Jeff Bagwell
Craig Biggio
Tom Glavine
Jack Morris
Mike Mussina
Mike Piazza
Tim Raines
Curt Schilling
Lee Smith
Frank Thomas
farg the PED users. They can wait a few more years. McGriff and Martinez are borderline to me, and can wait one more year.
YES this year - maddux
YES in the future - big hurt, glavine
MAYBE in the future - schilling, raines, piazza

yeah i went back and looked at his stats after i said that and they're not nearly as good as i thought. but him and mike schmidt were pretty much the face of baseball when i was a kid so i would still vote him in.
hes only a consideration because they basically put anyone on there...sean casey is up for consideration too
outside of maybe louie from new rochelle no one really thinks mattingly is a HOF
glavine is a lock, its not even a debate
i cant wait to see who leaves maddux off their ballot.
1983-1987 (you could even say 1989), Mattingly looked like a sure HOFer. .331 average, 30 homers each year.
After 1989, though, he was limited power (58 HRs total) and a .280 hitter. Basically he was Ricky Jordan.

ahhh....makes more sense
how is that baseball players make more than football players even though football destroys baseball in every conceivable financial aspect
162 games.......white wealthy fanbases
football tv contract and merchandise deals destroy baseball....less travel costs, less overhead, etc.
bottom line the owners make more than baseball owners do yet spend less on employees even though 1. the careers of the players are considerably shorter 2. the unbelievable health risks involved
162 > 16
plus local tv deals
i have no way of proving this because these arent public companies but the nfl and its teams are more profitable than mlb and its teams
do they yankees have more money than the bengals? sure. but on the whole it aint close.
i think you pretty much said it....the top mlb teams destroy the top nfl teams....but as a league the nfl has an advantage
revenue sharing in the nfl makes a big difference.....and obviously the salary cap too
aside from the yankees, its not really close

im not really sure why you are going by franchise worth but ok
isnt that what we were talking about?
excuse me for being stone cold sober
You guys are missing the most obvious difference.
53 > 25
X/25 > X/53
The NFL salary cap (which all teams hover around) is $123 million, which is bigger than the mean MLB payroll by about $20 million. Of course baseball has an enormous disparity in team payrolls, but basically the NFL players are pulling in more money, there are just a lot more of them to divvy up the cash.
true
but peyton manning is exponentially more important to his team than robinson cano and better at his individual sport but cano is making more (i think)

White Sox get Adam Eaton
Angels get Tyler Skaggs and Hector Santiago
Assuming the PTBNL aren't valuable Angels pieces, that's a hell of a deal for them

http://www.newseum.org/todaysfrontpages/hr.asp?fpVname=NY_dn&ref_pge=lst
Robinson Cano says the Yankees disrespected him by offering 7 yrs instead of 10. Then he follows that up by saying that players are typically done by age 35-37 and can't get big money contracts after that (which is true).
So basically he was disrespected because the Yanks didn't want to commit $20+mil/year to him after he turned 38...which according to him (and reality) is when players are broken down.
He also just gave a big FU to the M's and said "you're going to hate this contract in 4 years when I turn 35."
I'm starting to hate baseball
