QuotePITTSBURGH — Call it addition by omission.

As Steelers coach Mike Tomlin rattled off the status of injured players on Tuesday, three names were noticeably absent: Rashard Mendenhall, James Harrison and Troy Polamalu.

It wasn't an oversight by Tomlin. It's just that he doesn't think three of his team's most vital contributors are hurt anymore. Barring a setback, Tomlin expects all three to be in uniform on Sunday when the Steelers (1-2) host Philadelphia (3-1).

"I think that's a safe assessment," Tomlin said.

21SEP2008:  Eagles 15, Steelers 6
07NOV2004: Eagles 3, Steelers 27
12NOV2000: Eagles 26, Steelers 23 (OT, you don't need to know the rules when you're as good as McNabb was (http://www.footballdb.com/boxscore/2000111211))

I'm pretty surprised by this...my memory incorrectly believed the Steelers historically owned the Eagles.

I have distinct memories of all those games.

The OT game was awesome because of the sports bar I was in surrounded by Steelers fans. I thought we were going to get jumped.

The blowout in 04 caused panic because of how they ran all over the Eagles and WIP was on fire all week with "the Eagles are frauds" despite that being the first loss. Oh and some hate towards Duce because that was his first yr with the Steelers.

Dawk stripping Ben and pouncing on the ball to seal the W

The Eagles are something like 43-27-3 all time against the Steelers. Historically 'we' own that shtein

I was in San Diego watching the Chargers vs. Dolphins that day...but I remember that game helped the Eagles mold together and get that, 'We can beat anybody' feeling they started developing. I at least started to feel more confident they could be on the winning side of most games.

Holy shtein, Steelers seriously calling out Boykin

Quote
Steelers regard Brandon Boykin as "the candy bar"

Posted by Mike Florio on October 4, 2012, 8:23 AM EDT

AP
Asante Samuel is gone from Philly.  For now, then, the third cornerback behind Nnamdi Asomugha and Domonique Rodgers-Cromartie is rookie fourth-rounder Brandon Boykin.

And the Steelers plan to target Boykin when the Eagles come to Pittsburgh on Sunday.

"That's the candy bar," receiver Antonio Brown said Wednesday, via the Washington (Pa.) Observer-Reporter.

"He's given up a lot of plays," Brown added.  "Whoever gets that guy definitely has to take advantage."

The options are Brown, Mike Wallace, Emmanuel Sanders, and Jerricho Cotchery.  And if the Eagles give Boykin more safety help, the guys who don't draw Boykin may be less likely to face double coverage.

Tackle Max Starks was slightly more tactful than Brown.

"As long as we block stout, (passing) shouldn't be an issue," Starks said. "We have a great [group] of receivers that can all get open and make plays.  Plus, you add [tight end] Heath Miller in the middle, and you don't really have enough guys who can cover.  I think it's going to be a great matchup for us.  Outside of Asomugha and Cromartie-Rodgers, their nickel is a rookie. You have some guys who are inexperienced in there.  Hopefully, we can get into some sets and be successful in those things."

The passing game has been the bright spot for the Steelers, in part because of injuries on defense and ineffectiveness in the running game.  The good news for the Steelers is that linebacker James Harrison (knee), safety Troy Polamalu (calf), and running back Rashard Mendenhall (knee) all fully participated in practice on Wednesday.

i dont agree with the fact that hes been terrible so far but i agree in general...in fact i was emailing back n forth yesterday with a good friend of mine that watches the steelers like we watch the eagles and i said this to him...

yeah i am worried (about the steelers passing game) which is why i was asking about the pass protect...eagles only chance is to get to ben...cause no way they are going to be able to cover those three wr's...especially downfield...boykin is a rookie who ben can abuse...nnamdi is slow as farg and their safties suck....steelers should have all kinds of big plays available if the eagles dont pressure the qb

Post by: PhillyPhanInDC on October 04, 2012, 09:03:15 AM
I was reading somewhere that Boykin was rated in the top five in the NFL when it came to least amount of yardage given up when in press. There was a lot of chatter about him already being one of the best slot guys in the NFL, but obviously a small sample size. I haven't seen anything to this point during games that jumped out at me saying the dude is a liability or an easy get.

edit - found it:

exactly...he hasnt been tested yet and has had very favorable matchups for the most part but hes been fine....i think brown is basically basing everything hes saying on the fact that boykin is a rookie

that being said this game will be his biggest challenge yet...should be interesting...but as i said when he was drafted you cant really go wrong picking an sec athlete...shtein talking will not effect someone like boykin like it might another rookie...sec athletes definitely dont alck for confidence and hes been thru more than enough wars at a super high level in college for this not to faze him...if he gets abused sunday it will be because of inexperience or just got outplayed but not confidence

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000069299/article/roethlisberger-hatred-fuels-eaglessteelers-rivalry

QuoteSunday's Philadelphia Eagles-Pittsburgh Steelers matchup is not a normal non-conference game. It's two Pennsylvania rivals.

More importantly, it's one of the best teams in the NFL over the last decade trying to avoid a 1-3 record.

"We definitely want to get back on track. But it's probably just as much Pittsburgh versus Philadelphia," Roethlisberger said via The Beaver County Times. "It's not a division game. It's AFC versus NFC. But no matter what sport it is, it seems to be Pittsburgh versus Philly and a general hatred. That's what I've noticed since I moved here about Philadelphia."

Personally I could give two shteins about Pittsburgh. There's no rivalry like there is Flyers/Pens. If they played in the NFC East then shtein would be on.

of course you want them to win but you can do the math on the remaining games:
pit
det
atl
dal x2
dc x2
nyg
cin (thu)
car (mnf)
no

detroit, atlanta, 1 dallas, 1 dc, cinci, curolina are all wins. that leaves the 3 road division games, this game and the saints as the questionable ones. 2-3 in those and they go 12-4 and win the division and quite possibly earn home field with the head to head win over atlanta.

in short if they are gonna lose a game go head and let it be this.

farg Pittsburgh and their fans and their 6 rings.

The undefeated Falcons are 3rd in the league for points scored and 8th in points allowed and you have them contending for homefield throughout...I wouldn't say the regular season game is a gimme for the Eagles.

The fact of the matter is that this is not a rivalry game. I live in Pittsburgh and no one here has particularly strong feelings about the Eagles. It's another NFL week.

They hate the Flyers, but this NFL shtein is a media creation. If Eagles/Steelers was ever an actual rivalry it was in the 1950s or some shtein.

The Browns are the historical Steelers rivalry but it has decayed away quite a bit due to lack of competitiveness. Yinzers get the most amped up for Ravens weeks these days.

How bout calling some quick passing routes for 5 yards instead of these elongated routes where Vick has to stand back there to make mistakes.

Familiar theme. They need to stop putting the offense on Vick's shoulders and shift it to spreading the ball around and running the ball. It's really not hard to see they're successful when they take that approach and they blow when they try to throw the ball downfield every play. Baby steps offensive approach.

its like 15th on the list but andy burning his last timeout after that first down was beyond moronic

not as dumb as the challenge and then wasted timeout 2 plays later

or as mike vick being mike vick

or the refusal to give shady the ball until it was too late

or the run defense

or the pass rush

or _____

Vick looks fine half the time.

Yes. When he was on the bench because the defense couldn't get off the field. That's when he looks fine.

Vick looks fine half the time.  Problem is he's a farging moron the other half.  Can't hold onto the ball and sits in the pocket far too long.  I honestly think the d is decent enough this year and the O is solid enough that if you had a balanced O and game manager type QB who didn't make mistakes this would be a good team.

This goes back to the play calls. You know you have a turnover machine and Vick can't carry the offense so instead of making him drop back in 5-7 step drops and throwing the ball downfield why not shorten the passing game, run the ball, then take some chances after you get some rythym. They still call plays like they're a big play offense...but they're not. They haven't had a lot of big plays this season so stop with that nonsense and focus on moving the chains.

And they did that on the last drive and were successful doing so...which means Reid will forget it ever happened

It is getting more difficult to root for Vick. He continually makes more big plays for the other team than he does for the Eagles. That is the opposite of sexy.

These two boners were just typical AR & Co. gaffs.  The one called right after the challenge was even more of a head scratcher.

I wasn't really all that upset over the loss.  That, more than anything, is indicative of just how indifferent I've become about this team.   Until Reid is gone it's just not worth the effort to get upset or excited because in the end he's not going to run the ball nearly enough, he's going to piss away timeouts and manage the clock like a dumbass, and as a result he's going to lose tough games like yesterday's.  Been there, done that about a gazillion times and I'm over it.

the fumble at the two was mostly on reid....first down at the goal line and you have vick run out of a shotgun?.....made no sense at all

How many times do you need to see your qb cough up balls before you realize he has a fumbling problem? The answer is none because the Reid/MM are jackasses.

Not sure if he's noticed, but Shady is a pretty decent rb. The guy finds creases and falls forward every run so why you are not utilizing that on the goaline is once again is beyond me. When I see Bryce farging Brown come out of the huddle at the 2 ydline on first down I want to punch windows.

The lack of pressure from the dline is alarming.  cole and babin haven't done shtein this year so far.

Raise your hand if you think 15 carries from Shady is idiotic.

And then smack yourself repeatedly if you thought Reid would run him more than that.

He hasn't. He's never seen a running play, because he's dreaming of the super awesome passes they can't complete this year.

Exactly. And if you don't blitz at least run a stunt or something different to generate pressure. The pass rush has been horrible and they're the key to the entire defense.

what was most maddening was watching the steelers send 6-7 guys and be successful every time....i realize ben can recognize and react to a blitz better than vick but still when you are directly watching your opponent be successful at the very thing you should be doing its beyond infuriating

Yes, yes, yes! I am sick of seeing other teams blitz their asses off. The Eagles used to be one of those teams and now they have some goddamn OL coach masquerading as a DC and this is what we get...some bullshtein.

Vick gets murdered each week...why? Because teams identified that blitzing him is the way to win.

Juanny relies on some overhyped DL to get pressure and it ain't happening.

By the way...anyone seen Jason Babin this year?

With Assy the overpaid blowass back there Juan probably has zero confidence.  If they send a safety Nnamdi has no one to blame when he gets toasted.
