We saw the games this weekend.  We finally had enough of not having television in the house that we bought an HD antenna, which works great and we now have all the networks free in HD.

But yeah...football is generally not worth as much of my time as it is of yours.

Is anyone watching the game or do they have the same tradition as I...only watch when the Eagles play in it?

I'm going to the beach Sunday. F football.

If I only watched the Super Bowl when the Eagles are playing in it, then I'd never watch the Super Bowl.  That said, there is a certain level of disinterest in it this year and I just can't get very excited about watching it.  Probably because I know the Giants are going to win.  I'm rooting for the Pats but I know they'll farg it up.  And then it'll be the same old, same old about all these SB trophies in the NFC East, none of which belong to the Eagles.

I could care less about who wins the superbowl if the Eagles aren't playing to win.

It's like watching someone have sex with your wife. Unless you're into that kind of thing, it's just weird.

Post by: Sgt PSN on January 30, 2012, 02:40:38 PM
If I only watched when the Eagles were in it, I'd have exactly 1 legit SB memory in my life since I was too young to really remember much of anything in 1980.

I watch every year, but 01-03 were hard because the Eagles were so farging close.  This year though, I am rather disinterested in it.  Mostly because I've got an ugly gut feeling that the midgets will win.  I hope it's just indigestion, but I've had it since they knocked off the Pack.

We've been pretty fortunate as we've had some very good games the past 10 - 12 years.  The Baltimore/Giants and the Tampa/Oakland were awful but most of the games were close going into the 4th quarter.

I am so over the Eagles aren't in it excuse for not watching. The Carolina/Pats and of course the Tampa/Raiders games were exceptionally painful for obvious reasons.  I think I saw four or five plays of the Tampa game and didn't turn on the Panthers/Pats until right around the wardrobe malfunction.

Don Ho, I'll probably be a Newport or Huntington Beach...Manhattan beach is too far a drive.

Eagles not making it almost every year gives me the excuse to not watch it...and being out. It is truly one of the few times in the whole year that Los Angeles is great to drive through. No traffic anywhere. Time slows down and it is a relaxing day out.

I'm thinking of going to the beach early...and then going to the observatory and hitting up this carribean restaurant in Silverlake. Should be a nice day out.

Can't go wrong with either.  Some great places to eat in HB.  I love the homes in Newport along Balboa Blvd.  They're packed in so tight but each has its own distinct personality.  My son is dying to surf The Wedge.  That spot is just plain crazy.

Some of my best surf sessions have been on Super Sunday just before kickoff.  Although with the hip not 100% looks like I'll be watching with pops and 6 pack of something.

Title: Re: Super Bowl XLVI
Post by: reese125 on January 31, 2012, 11:08:33 AM
oh I think it will be close--even more so now that gronk is dealing with a high ankle sprain. hes a huge reason why the pats are able to distribute and move the ball so effectively. he literally clears paths over the middle. he'll still be out there, but I think the giants will be able to react to the ball so much better because of this injury.

not to mention wilfork was the main reason the pats won their last game...very doubtful he duplicates that ridiculous performance...so I see manning staying right with brady.

NBA Finals w/no Lakers? Who cares.
World Series, no Dodgers? Who cares.
Superbowl, no Eagles. farg me.

etc., etc., etc.

Also, I'm picking the Giants. Dudes have impressed me to the point where I'm almost gaga for them like IGY is for the taterskins. I just can't believe WE haven't put it together over the past 10 years and have a ring to brag about.

i completely understand it...sports out there doesnt mean as it much on this coast...you guys have ton of other stuff to do like go to the beach...or roller blade...and good weather all year long...this isnt a new thing and you didnt need to state your position for me to get it...i was explaing it to reese...its why cleveland has had two teams since LA last had one and almost 20 years total since they have had an nfl team

Wrong again.

It's igynorant for you to say that sports doesn't matter. Our pro teams, and college teams have just as strong a following as any teams across the country.

Bringing in the beach and roller blading and weather into the conversation completely strips you of all credibility. Do you really see 5 million people hitting the beach on Superbowl sunday? Weather is good, but that doesn't affect people's interest in sports. Maybe it is a factor with you guys out there.

I just can't stand watching someone else win it. What's the point. So I can say congratufarginlations, nice season? farg that. I wish nothing but death to teams that are there at the end. I'm not happy for any of them. And you so called 'true fans' should check yourselves. But I get it...you are the same people that have to watch all of this television. Without this stuff to fill your lives, you have no meaning. Missing the Superbowl? No farging way would you be the guy that 'missed out'.

Eagles or bust.

Have fun Superbowl Sunday. Let me know who wins.

its not about any specific sunday or any one sporting event...its the culture you grow up in and the west coast just doesnt have a sports culture that is engrained in almost everyone from cradle to grave...in LA its an event that is neat to go to every once and a while and if a team is good yeah people will get excited but you are never fully invested in it and it certainly is never ever treated as a live or die thing
Title: Re: Super Bowl XLVI
Post by: hbionic on January 31, 2012, 02:50:56 PM
I agree in that sense as a whole. But the whole is made up of a bunch of parts and a lot of people that have relocated. You DO have a strong following for Dodgers, Lakers, USC, and UCLA. But Los Angeles is also made up of transplants that give the impression that as a whole, L.A. just isn't as 'strong' as other sports god fearing cities.

Sports is just as big a part of people's lives here. In fact it's bigger. We just don't bark as loud as you do about it. Kids grow up playing all little league sports. The thing we don't have is the fact that a lot of the people here are 1st generation either immigrants or transplants. We don't have the grandfather-father-son-grandchild thing going on in the stands and at home. Maybe that is why you feel it is more deeply engrained, and I will give you that. Give it a few generations though we can compare notes.

L.A. is a transient city. Economy keeps them in or out. It's hard to establish deep roots when people leave because of jobs.

I'm willing to acknowledge the deeply engrained tradition of sports out east. But you have to acknowlege that true sports fans are the same everywhere.

The Super Bowl transcends sports and is virtually an American holiday. I would guess that most people who watch the game are not even sports fans and haven't intentionally sat down to watch another NFL game all season. It's a spectacle and a major cultural event in the US.

I'm genuinely surprised there are people on CF who don't watch the SB. I realize not everyone here is consuming an igy level of sports broadcasting every day, but the Super Bowl is pretty basic.

Maybe we ought to run a poll to find out how many Eagle games people on CF watch per season.
Title: Re: Super Bowl XLVI

I take in maybe half of the Eagles games in a season and I don't generally watch the Super Bowl.  Last one I saw was the first Eli vs. Brady because I was roped into visiting in-laws, and before that, Donovan puking against Brady, because it was the Eagles.

Once Philly is out, I don't care at all.  I have only so many free days, and a lot of shtein to get done, so the last thing I'm gonna do is drop four or five hours on a virtual American holiday.  F America, I have errands to run.

go to a random superbowl party and less than half it is paying attention to the game...and im not just talking about women...even many males who are sports fans dont "watch" the whole thing...youll have the mini group of hardcore men who have the best seats on the couch and watch the whole game but that a def minority...

thats one of the reasons im not a huge fan of superbowl parties...id rather not watch the game at all than sort of watch it...not be able to hear the sound...see one series then lose your seat cause you went to take a piss and have to stand in the back of room for the next quarter...i either wanna watch it for real or not watch it at all...then you have to put up with everyone cackling at stupid commericals and girls giggling at how the quarterback puts his hands on another mans ass every play

If Chuggie doesn't wanna watch the Super Bowl, good for him.  If I were in L.A. I probably wouldn't be watching it either.  Since I'm not, and I have to live in this virtual hell hole of a state, (for at least 7 more years I've just been told by my ladyfriend) I'm gonna get sauced and cheer like a motherfarger for Ocho Cinco.

Bill Simmons' Super Bowl mailbag (http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/7536111/the-half-bag-super-bag) is actually mildly amusing this week. Excerpt:

QuoteQ: Just bought a pair of Penn State sweatpants for $5 at TJ Maxx. That's the Sandusky effect!
— J. Sawyer, Sewickley

SG: Will we ever see another human being write the sentence "That's the Sandusky effect!" in a seemingly positive way? I'm gonna say no.

Q: It's the day after the NFC title game. I'm an eagle fan, stuck at san francisco airport, with a delayed flight to Newark, with about 200 giddy giant fans. Is there a shteintier situation to be in on the planet?
— Dan, Philly

SG: I mean, you could be at a T.J. Maxx celebrating a pair of $5 Penn State sweatpants ...

that safety call was bullshtein...number one he was already loading up to throw the ball before tuck was threatening him...number two if you can throw it that far and its still in the field of play it shouldnt be a grounding

They threw the flag so farging late too.   Kill me now

I don't have it in me to get worked up about a call going against the Patriots. Sure they're the lesser of two evils in this game, but farg 'em just the same.

Todd,  that was good.  My wife finally told me to shut up as every time the "guy from France" did something I bitched about how the birds should have drafted him but even if they did they'd move him to OLB or Safety and screw it all up.

By the way, best farging time to go the gym.  Watched the first quarter at 24 Hour Fitness.  Place was dead, all the TV's on the game.  Mostly Niner fans there.

no chance you wanted him at the draft....everyone wanted earl thomas...but btwn graham and jpp i recall everyone here saying graham was the more solid pick because jpp had attitude issues or something

not that its  shocking thing because this is hat easy does but i remember like halfway thru their rookie seasons easy posting jpp's numbers not being as good as grahams as a way of defending the pick

that farging offsides by the white stiff lost the game for them

giants would have been punting from out of their own end zone and almost certainly brady would have scored from midfield....instead because of the penalty giants gain another 35 yards and pin the patriots inside their own ten

From Durden...

QuoteOne thing that certainly helped the Giants win the Super Bowl last night was the three dropped passes by Patriots receivers in the fourth quarter. This was not lost on Tom Bradys wife Gisele Bundchen, who of course caught some shtein from Giants fans on the way out of the stadium (video on the Insider here).

After they yelled things like "Eli rules" and "Eli owns your husband", she turned to a friend and said, "they didn't catch the ball when they were supposed to", then yelled at the fan:

"My husband can not farging throw the ball and catch the ball at the same time."

To which Patriot fans replied, "We haven't wona fahkin Supa Bowl since Tawmmy Brady married tha spic whore, but fa once she has a point otha than that beak onha fahkin face."

100% accurate description of those fargtards.
