Everybody keeps wondering what they will do with all three CBs, in case you forget the nickel is basically a base defense now.

True but a pass rush wouldn't hurt either, and that's a lot of cheddar at cb.

Funny you should mention that. Remember that he's been excused from the beginning of camp for "personal reasons?"

Those "personal reasons" are probably the Eagles' FO thinking "we gonna trade yo ass, son."

In all seriousness, he's probably gone.
Title: Re: Nnamdi Asomugha, Philadelphia Eagle
Post by: Dillen on July 29, 2011, 06:41:57 PM
Some dude McManus from the Philadelphia whatever-paper just interviewed on Sportscenter and said now they're gonna trade one of the three because there are 3 starting corners for only 2 spots and Asante makes the most sense. He said the personal reasons were probably all of this happening, but that was purely speculation.

QuoteAt one point, Jerry handed the phone to defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, who coached Asomugha for five seasons with the Oakland Raiders. Ryan talked on the phone for several minutes during drills while standing within 10 yards of Terence Newman, who might have been released if Asomugha agreed to come to Dallas.

"I will tell you that I did not get Rob to break from the drill and come over unless it was serious business for the Dallas Cowboys," Jerry said.

True. Driving home from the gym I tuned to the dallas cowboys NFL Sirius radio show featuring NFL.com senior douchebag Gil Brandt. His story was great.

He said he called jerruh this afternoon a few minutes after 4 and talked to his personal secretary. He asked if they had signed Asomugha yet and she said "not yet" because they had to wait until 6pm to make it official.

Lol, they thought it was in the bag. That was excellent and more than worth tuning in to.

Not to be disagreable, but I can't stand that dickhole. He's such a farging egomaniac and tries to impress people with how smart he is because he know this arcane trivia nobody gives a shtein about, like the area code of bumfarg montana where some 9th round CB was drafted by the rams in 1969, but can't remember basics like tonight when he didn't know the name of "that running back from the Houston Oilers" (Foster). He turns every conversation into something about the cowboys regardless of what the callers ask about. It is the same smug dallas uber alles Americas Team vomit that organization has been polluting the planet with since Tex Schramm. Farg dallas and their pathetic mongoloid staff and owner.

Decent summary of how this whole deal happened:

QuoteStaying quiet

Dogra, Banner said, helped keep the Eagles' involvement quiet. He even left some of his top aides in the dark.

But the numbers still didn't match up on Thursday. Shortly after midnight Friday morning, Roseman texted Dogra to let him know: Thanks for your consideration, but we can't do it.

At the same moment, Dogra was texting back: I'd really like to make this work. The agent took the simultaneous messaging as a sign, and called Roseman to revive the deal.

"It was hard for us to put everything together with the plan we had with obviously the money that [Asomugha] was going to get," Roseman said. "His commitment to come to Philadelphia was really something that showed through."

Roseman got Reid and Banner on the phone. They woke up Lurie. The chase was back on.

Impressive use of the reverse Jew psychology that Roseman/Banner used to get this done. Sounds like Nmandi wanted to be an Eagle worse then the Eagles wanted him.

Quote"Of course, subject to owner approval," he said, according to Lurie.

The owner laughed. "Howie, I approve."

Roseman told Reid. The deal couldn't be announced until 6 p.m., though. In his office, Banner celebrated internally, but stared at the clock, wishing it would move faster.

Lurie went back to watching ESPN and the NFL Network. The Jets were the leaders, they said. The Cowboys were also in. It was down to those two, reporters said.

"I'm watching all this knowing we've got him," Lurie said. "It was surreal."

Sal Pal was saying in his report yesterday, that Dogra and Asomghua had texted the Eagles basically saying "Don't do anything... until you've checked with us" and the Eagles agreed to the same. He said the Eagles were always his first choice and wouldn't sign with anyone before giving the Eagles a last shot at him.

No, what I am saying is if you are not from the ghetto, you don't have to sound like you are. Also, to successfully compete in today's business environment, one needs to conform to the nation's prevailing mores and culture. Like it or not, that's the reality. Does that make someone an "Uncle Tom"?

QuoteNnamdi Asomugha, Eagles (5 years, $60 million). The Eagles haven't just picked up a great player; they got him at a great price. The simple fact of the matter is the NFL is low on shutdown corners, which Asomugha is. In three years he's been thrown at 87 times; 25 cornerbacks were thrown at more than that in 2010 alone.

By rights he should have had another $10+ of that guaranteed, which actually helps the FO if they would want to cut him loose with a year or two left.

Also read a good note that although Cooper has really looked great in camp so far, at one point he was matched against DRC, who just completely ate Cooper's lunch and made it look as though he was expending almost no effort doing it.

Still feel like something is going to shake out here soon.

You have 2 guys that excel at press man (which Im assuming Castillo reverts to majority of the time to maximize the talents on the outside) and one that excels at zone coverage.

If they are going to be playing nickel and have all 3 on the field at the same time no way Sameuls is able to benefit off playing slot corner. He doesn't blitz or play the run well. Matter of fact DRC is perceived the same way so this should be interesting.

Here's some All 22 analysis of Nnamdi's lowlights from the Giants game.

http://www.phillymag.com/eagles/2012/10/03/all-22-review-what-it-tells-us-about-nnamdi/

My take is that he's not getting much help from the DC on either play, since Coleman is being instructed to prioritize the run on both, and that Allen has some responsibility for taking the bait on the Hixon play.
Title: Re: Nnamdi Asomugha, Philadelphia Eagle
Post by: ice grillin you on October 04, 2012, 08:08:40 AM
my takes fwiw

the first one is like 60/40 blame on assy...he completely whiffed on his chuck and coleman bit hard on the run...but if assy slows barden down by jamming him at the line then coleman can possibly recover

i tend to disagree with mcmanus as far as coleman supposedly being told to prioritze the run there.....they are clearly in a two deep...coleman is ten yards off the line here as opposed to seven yards off the line on the second play in question in which he clearly was playing the run...its also 2nd and 7 here with a single back versus 1st and 10 and an I formation on the second play which is much more of a run look

the second play is all on nate allen...hes supposed to be single over the top as coleman was clearly playing run on this play...assy didnt get a jam on this play but i dont think he was necessarily supposed to...he was supposed to take away the sideline and funnel the wr to the safety which he did

Assy has farged up on plenty of plays. That being said, whether Coleman is being "told" to do it or not, that bitch gets sucked up in shotgun empty backfield sets. He's farging horrible.

Asomugha's biggest problem is that DRC is so damn good. His second biggest problem is that the safeties are average on a good day.

Frankly, I think he's looked pretty solid in coverage this year. The rules favor the offense, and he pushes them to the limit. Regardless, he's been much more effective than he was last year.

Not the 50M or 40Y champ, though. His problem is re-accelerating after change of direction. But again, he's still above average there, and he might just seem slower because DRC is so damn fast and fluid.

I could live with him if he was a solid corner. We were all expecting a shutdown CB, but at the very least he should be adequate in coverage. He's toast Jenkins only worse because of his contract. Teams are starting to exploit him deep more and more as weeks go on, they need to leave a safety over top of him to help out because he's toast.

I may have said this before, but a few years back I had a debate w a friend that Nnamdi was the best cb in the game. I pulled stats that were ridiculous - something like 5 tds given up in 3 years, targeted only 1.something times per game, etc. The guy was building a a strong resume for Canton. I don't know what the farg has happened to him but his sudden horrific drop in production since he has been here is one of the biggest shocks ever. It's almost like he forgot how to play the game. They best re-sign DRC.

The logical answer is coaching. Allowing him to play to his strengths vs. forcing him to play in a system that doesn't fit them.

That might have been an excuse for last season when they were trying to use him like GB used Woodson but what's his excuse for this season? He's jamming receivers at the line and getting burnt in coverage. They're not moving him all over the field like they did last season and I don't see them playing a ton of zone like they did when money bags was here.

I think Nmadi's strength is in the 5-7 yard range...anything about that, he's toast. He's the biggest beneficiary from pressure on the QB....but we've had a drought...so he's also been the biggest loser from that.

Lindros at one point during his Flyers career was considered the best player in the league. I don't understand the disappointment aspect. He also carried them to a Cup appearance.

TO was far from a disappointment with his play. Kearse was but he wasn't as big a bust as Aso Toast.

A fairer comparison would be Lance Parrish or Bryz.

Lindros was the greatest player in the world and he was also the single-most hyped player in history.  I doubt there's a Flyers fan alive who was there to experience what it meant to get him.    Lindros meant MULTIPLE Cups, not just a scant appearance in the Finals.   He met his individual potential briefly but I don't think anyone can argue that him not winning a league championship is a bigger disappointment than any other athlete in Philly history.

There's plenty of corners out there that can be signed for the vet minimum and get beat just as badly.  He'll take the restructured deal because it's still probably better than anything he'd get on the open market, but I really don't see why the Eagles are making the offer in the first place.  Bad cornerbacks are a dime a dozen.

Nnamdi made #2 on the top 10 list of biggest busts in Philly sports history.  The little caption that goes along with his picture sums it up nicely.

QuoteWhen his contract with Oakland was nullified in 2011, Nnamdi Asomugha - a Pro Bowler, All-Pro, All-Decade cornerback - arrived in Philadelphia and naturally lost any and all evidence that he was a professional football player; but not before signing a $60 million contract.
