All you need to know about how stupid people are is the fact that more people who voted would rather watch the first 1/162th of a 7 month season than playoff games for sports that actually require athletic ability. farging baseball fans.

I have no idea gway people do. I know that I am a sports fan in general and a Philly fan in particular and I naturally prefer sports that require actual athletic ability. I also don't infestand how bbyone anywhere could prefer to watch the most meaningless of baseball games over a playoff game for another team that they root for. I mean Jesus, one baseball game is as meaningless as a sporting event gets.

Football and baseball are 1 and 1a for me and there's a fairly significant gap between the Phils and Sixers on my "love scale"  Bruce Ruffin could be the opening day starter and I'd still look forward to that more than a playoff game with the Sixers or Flyers.  If it's the finals, then I'd probably go with the Sixers.  Flyers would be a coin flip.

I drank about 100 bloody mary's then switched over to vodka/crans.  My tab was 17 bucks.  Not quite sure but I think my bartender miscounted.

And why would anyone pick the Sixers?  Jesus Christ what the farg is wrong with some of you?

Yeah I really don't see the appeal of watching the opening game of a playoff series of a team that even if they play their best, have absolutely 0% chance at the championship.

Plus watching basketball sucks.
Title: Re: Openers
Post by: Rome on April 02, 2011, 05:16:12 PM
IGY can claim racism all he wants, but it's an awful brand (pun definitely NOT intended) of basketball that's played there and that's why people in Philly don't give a shtein about them.

Baseball on the average day isn't. But the Phils now have 2 guys you have to watch pitch and 2 other guys you want to watch pitch.

Hockey is exciting as hell to watch...non stop action, physicality, fighting, dudes with ridiculous last names....good times.

Title: Re: Openers
Post by: Rome on April 03, 2011, 12:27:02 PM
i like basketball quite a bit.  i don't like the nba because the game they play sucks.  just my opinion, of course.
Title: Re: Openers
Post by: Diomedes on April 03, 2011, 12:44:44 PM
the NBA game is all about offense, and mostly offense driven by a star or two on the team.

balanced team offense, defense, passing...these things are not highly valued in the NBA.

watching an NBA game is more like watching the Harlem Globetrotters routine (except the NBAers miss more), than it is like watching international professional basketball, or even college ball.

it's about showboating and trickery and "entertainment"

some people like team play and defense,  Some like alley-oop dunks, ankle breaking drives and chest slapping.

On this board, the latter call the former MA.

@ rome you have to be 65 years old
Title: Re: Openers
Post by: Rome on April 03, 2011, 01:27:20 PM
yes, i'm at least 65.

and nba basketball is almost as boring as your tired farging act, mds, although if i had to choose between watching an nba game and seeing you thrown under a speeding 18-wheeler, i'd probably choose the former, if that's any consolation to you.
Title: Re: Openers
Post by: MDS on April 03, 2011, 01:31:04 PM
the nba is boring but college basketball is exciting?

college basketball where a typical offense is to try a high screen and when that fails, have a player stand around the 3 pt arc until he sees a tiny hole and jacks up a contested 3. thats your idea of good basketball? and btw this player is only in college because he sucks and cant play in the pros.

explain yourself because the only realistic answer for people who hate the nba is they are simply uncomfortable with whatever stereotype theyve painted in their head about the players and the style.
Title: Re: Openers

Title: Re: Openers

Watching college basketball blows too, except March Madness makes it a bit more exciting.

Basketball is just not a fun sport to watch. A lot like soccer. Fun to play, excruciatingly boring to watch until the last couple minutes.
Title: Re: Openers
Post by: MDS on April 03, 2011, 01:38:35 PM
its ridiculous because if you actually watch the nba then college is really tough to sit through since the quality of play is disgustingly different

but if you listen to some random, old baseless stereotypes based on racism and ignorance and apply them to now i guess you get what we have here
Title: Re: Openers
Post by: reese125 on April 03, 2011, 05:54:56 PM
Yep-the nba has no defense at all. None. The defensive players just let the guy go right on by.

Nevermind the fact that the offensive players have so much damn athletic skill that you never even think of the fact that it's just that difficult to guard someone in the NBA. Learn to appreciate that and you might just appreciate the game....but let's argue how pheneomanal a 1-0 hockey game is.
Title: Re: Openers
Post by: Munson on April 03, 2011, 05:57:57 PM
There's just nothing exciting about watching someone who's 6'6 drive to the basket and dunk the ball or hit a layup.

It's a lot more impressive when 5'8 kids are doing it in high school. And high school basketball is even more boring.
Title: Re: Openers
Post by: reese125 on April 03, 2011, 06:39:30 PM
Oh I get it-but watching a guy ice skate and take 40 shots on a net with none of them going in is spectacular?

Please stop-my entertainment meter can't take it anymore.
Title: Re: Openers
Post by: Munson on April 03, 2011, 06:50:04 PM
Yes, it is actually more impressive to see less athletic guys make moves on an icey surface and still keep control of the puck and take pinpoint accurate shots at the net. Or deflect a shot from the point in. Aside from the occasional set up of the rush behind the net, there's constant movement and a lot of time spent in the offensive zones. And physical play. Roughing, fighting, etc.

Much, much more exciting than watching somebody take 10 seconds to dribble up the court, swing it out, get it back and drive to the net. Over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again. Throw some bricks and the occasional great shot in there.

Aside for the last few minutes of a close game, there's really nothing exciting or impressive about a basketball game. If I were 6'5 and super athletic I better be able to dunk or drive and hit a layup too. Impressive stuff. Don't really see what's so thrilling about an uncontested dunk, which make up most dunks anymore since the players are more worried about being embarrassed than going for the block...it's the equivalent of an empty net goal or an intentional walk.

No one in philly actually likes basketball. Just ask the empty seats in the 1983 playoffs.

And the fact that I was able to walk up to the gate 10 minutes before tip off in to 2001 finals and get tickets.

anyway i can understand not liking hockey....its not easy to watch...its not our sport....no one can pronounce the names of half the league or identify the places they come from

You don't need to go to Philly to see any of those things the park, the rec center, or the gym. We used to go down to some of the public parks all the time to play pick up ball, and there was always a good mix of races there. We brought the only Asian usually.

I like college basketball because of the pageantry & school spirit.  There was nothing like going to a Big 5 doubleheader when I was a kid.  I mean, that was it in Philly sports.  The best of the best.

The NBA has always been at best a passing interest.  Yeah, I got into it when the Sixers finally beat the Lakers, but not to the point where I went to a game in the playoffs (even though tickets were plentiful, even then).  I didn't watch the parade on television and to this day I couldn't care less if the NBA is even in business.  I'd rather watch women's golf than that bullshtein.

Sorry if having an opinion that differs from the Borg-like collective in this place offends anyone.
