QuotePierre Thomas is headed to injured reserve
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on January 5, 2011, 3:37 PM EST
Pierre Thomas and Chris Ivory are out. DeShawn Wynn and Joique Bell are in.
Suddenly, the No. 5 Saints don't look as quite as big a threat to make a repeat trip to the Super Bowl.
One day after Chris Ivory was surprisingly lost for the season, the Saints placed Thomas on injured reserve. The team's best running back also sat out in Week 17. Coach Sean Payton said Thomas suffered a setback in practice last week.
We've been toying with the idea of picking the Saints to make it back to the Super Bowl. They've turned the ball over too much, but their defense is a lot better than people think. This news makes it harder.
It's going to be a lot harder for the New Orleans offense to stay balanced with Reggie Bush and Julius Jones carrying the load. Wynn and Bell were added to the roster in the last two days, but figure to be reserves.
What the farg is he talking about? Since when have the Saints been balanced?
While this certainly isn't good news for them, I don't think it really changes their gameplan much

I found that last bit mildly amusing, even if it would be a little tricky for the Eagles and Packers to meet up in the NFC Championship game. Anything that pokes fun at Andy Reid being fat is a win.

great start, Seattle
I think the spread on this game was 10 and Seattle might not even be able to cover that by the end of the 1st quarter.
At least you're laying it out there Sarge. Not like Igy, "Eagles don't stand a chance unless they score more points than the Packers". He's a douche.

Oops. Seattle up 24-20 at the half. NO is not anywhere close to what they were last year.
Seattle fans and that stadium, wow! Gotta hand it to them at this point.
Saints D is garbage so far and Hasselbeck is having the game of his life. Not complaining though. If Sea and the Eagles win, I like the 4 remaining teams being Atl, Chi, Phi, and Sea.

If NO wins, I don't mind either. What can Vick and Jackson do to a defense getting embarrassed by Matt Hasselbeck and Mike Williams?
Agreed but transitive property doesnt always work. Knocking NO out today is fine with me.
Imagine this hypothetical......
IF Seattle wins this week and next week, they would go into the NFCCG with a .500 record. Which means, that if they lose that game, the NFC Runner Up finishes the year 1 game under .500, or if they win, the NFC is represented in the SB by a team that is just 1 game over .500.
Looks like Seattle is really pulling away, but I'm not counting the Saints out just yet.

It doesn't matter who wins this game anyway, since the Eagles aren't going to have to worry about playing them.
holy crap Lynch
That's on NFL Network top 10. What a great run.
If you're the Saints, how do you come back from that? Just about everyone on their defense whiffed on Lynch. If I was a Saint player or fan, I'd be totally humiliated right now.

Don't leave Raheem Brock out.
So here are some mortal locks: Eagles can't beat Packers, Seahawks can't beat Falcons, Saints will crush Hawks, Dewey beats Truman.
So am I igy, I just think the chances are better vs Atl. I thought you stated 2 weeks ago that the one team you wanted the Eagles to avoid was NO. Gimme ATL if they make it that far, even on the road.
Falcons are an easier matchup than the Saints.
IGY is a buffoon. He is awfully proud of himself when you consider his statements are always so wrong. He tries to bail himself out by equivocating on evrrythibg, but anyone with reasonable intellegence sees right through him.

Wait! The Eagles have no chance to win, well, that's what you said earlier this week. That was after you predicted 6-10 or 7-9 with Kolb, because as you told us, Vick sucks. Oh and by the way, you're a douche.
Yes. I think the Eagles offense is built for a dome and the d is better off playing a run oriented team like Atl over the Saints who would put up 30+ in their sleep.
I can see why someone would want the home game but Atl is my preference and that isnt even mentioning the 10% seattle has of winning next week.

Not sure why they kept the clock running though. Edwards caught the ball and got both feet in, and then he fell to the ground and when he landed, the ball was oob. Shouldnt that be a catch and then oob to stop the clock?

I don't see why he'd be done. This was the worst Colts team he's had around him other than maybe his rookie year. And it's not like he came up short at the end. He took the Colts downfield and they took the lead with under a minute to play. Colts ST and defense lost that game in the end.

pretty sure IGY was talking about caldwell
That makes sense.
QuoteCaldwell was asked to explain after the game.
"I didn't care. I was going to make sure that they couldn't. Make them snap the ball. They were in field goal range," Caldwell said. "We wanted to try to make them snap the ball as many times as they possibly could."
Yes, the Jets were in field goal range: In range for what would have been a 50-yard field goal, which is no chip shot for Jets kicker Nick Folk, who went 5-for-11 on field goal attempts of 40 yards or longer this season. As it turned out, on the very next play after that timeout, Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez hit Braylon Edwards on an 18-yard completion, and on the next play after that Folk kicked the game-winning 32-yard field goal as time expired.
Frankly, Caldwell's explanation doesn't make any sense because his decision doesn't make any sense. Making the Jets snap the ball again just gave the Jets another opportunity to make the field goal easier, and that's exactly what they did.
Caldwell should have known better, because he made the same mistake during the regular season at Jacksonville, using two timeouts during the Jaguars' final drive and helping Jacksonville set up a game-winning field goal. Caldwell didn't learn from that mistake, and the Jets benefited on Saturday night.
There's no way Folk makes that kick from the 50. He sucks. Even the game-winning FG wasn't really on-target.
Jamaal Charles might be my favorite non-Eagle player to watch right now. I've been tuning into Chiefs games all year just to watch him wreak havoc. His YPC is off the charts. He's a threat for a first down or more every single time he touches the ball. Guy is money.

Berry was taken with the 5th overall selection, did you want Reid to trade up that high for a Safety? If you're thinking of a different Safety (Earl Thomas) who was taken 14th overall then yeah I'd agree. I think Allen has a good future ahead of him but Thomas has much more talent.

I'd say it's the exact opposite. Everyone was saying that Seattle had no business even being in the playoffs and they go out and knock off the defending champs. And it's not like they won a terribly played game or on a fluke play or because of terrible officiating or because the Saints had too many key players out due to injury. They beat them soundly and legitimately and imo, that further solidifies the NFL as the only league where teams are by and large, relatively even.
A team winning their division with a 7-9 record was a fluke. I don't think you start changing rules because of something that happens once every hundred years. I've even heard people say that a 7-9 team shouldn't get a home game and that it should have been played in NO since NO had the better record. I don't buy that either because almost every year, there's a WC team that finishes with a better record than a division winner (say 11-5 vs 10-6) and the division winner still gets HFA if those 2 teams meet in the playoffs and I've never heard any outcry over that. Why should this be any different?
Like it or not, Seattle beat the defending champs straight up and if that doesn't prove that they belong in the postseason, then I don't know what does.
seahawks won, but no way in hell they are the better overall team. there was a reason they were 12 pt underdogs.
also, these seahawks are not the arizona cardinals where everyone was saying they had no business being in the playoffs as well. the cardinals at least had a hall of fame qb, hall of fame wr and boldin to make any game close. now we got matt friggin hasselback throwing the ball to benjamin obomanu...but somehow I think seattle wins this game because Cutler just has a knack of farging up and his chin gives games away.
I mean at least if Chicago wins you can say their defense was stout all year so they have a reason, but seattle hasnt done squat all year and has no legitimate threat on either side of the ball.

I'd agree except the Baltimore offense was never really established in this game... those takeaways in the first half covered up the fact that they weren't doing a lot with the football.

You guys should be thanking the Eagles. With them out in the first round you've got a better chance of watching games that are good for 60 minutes every time you tune in.

That pick looked familiar
so that rodgers is pretty good.
I wonder if Matt Ryan had ice in his veins when he served up that pick 6.

If the Pack make it to the SB, I won't feel so bad about losing to them.
Whole teams routinely lose to them, so you shouldn't feel bad at all.
Alright, need the pats to win by 12 and the Seahawks to cover 10. Come on. Actually I'd take a split. Wouldn't mind seeing the pats beat.
Jets and Seahawks win today would make me smirk
Me too. SEA-FENCE!!

Because I'm an idiot? I actually would prefer the Bears to win but if they could do it by less than 10 points, that would be neat.
The Seahawks may want to score at some point, though.

its not even a good bet at -3 i hate you
I thought Reid was horrible with his post game press conference after a loss but Belichick is just an icehole.
belichek is the biggest dickhead ever but he gets a pass for being an all time great coach and having mulitple superbowls......as he should
hes actually awesome behind closed doors its just this public persona is hideous
plus after a loss its even worse. talk about bitter sulking. you got beat stop acting like your son got diagnosed with brain cancer.
except btwn this year and 18-1 has one guy ever had two worse losses?
i mean in 2008 he goes from beating the dolphins record to losing to eli manning......and today hes 14-2 and about to become the first team in nfl history to score 30 plus for nine straight games and they lay an abominable home field egg
smaller scale but andy in the minny game this year is an all timer. at least the giants and jets defenses were good, andy lost to a 4-12 team with joe webb at qb. combine that with...take your pick: 2002 nfc title, 2003 nfc title, 2008 nfc title, back to back dallas games last year
also any marty schottenheimer coached playoff game. his wasnt so much the gameplan or execution it is him playing scared and doing everything he could not to lose.
im talking about tough losses and why belichek was so hurt after the game
andy is a fargin small timer...him losing to minnesota isnt even in the eagles top 10 all time losses and this is a franchise that hasnt wont a title in 51 years
other than possibly carolina andy has never had as bad a loss as belichek had today
maybe holmgren?
hard fought sb loss to den....ridiculous loss to san fran on the TO catch....refs decide game in sb against pitt
granted his team wasnt heavy favorites like belichick but those are 3 bad ones for 1 dude to take
i dont think you can compare anything to belicheks two because of how dominant they were at the time of the losses and how big a favorites they came in as....plus the giants loss was in the friggin superbowl combined with a possible undefeated season and todays loss was against your biggest rival and came after a week where two years worth of shtein talking preceded it...and omg did the jets rub it in his grill afterwards
j's gonna get mad at this but imagine if mcnabb were the qb for the pats
do they even put up 7? donny would be shakin in his diaper and would be all smiles with his best buddies the jets who are his good nice friends after they just beat his ass down
i honestly dont know how the patriots were on the verge of setting an all time scoring record going into todays game...their wr's are awful...especially down the field....in the first three quarters today i think brady completed one pass that was more than ten yards
the pats number one offseason need with a bullet...is a down the field wr
and lol at even imagining mcnabb in that offense
Who said, what? McNabb? What?
That image of McNabb makes me sick. At least Brady left his helmet on and got the farg off the field. He wasn't about to brother-in-law anybody.

Don't they have two first rounders, again? And count on Fitzgerald being a top priority. shtein.
The Patriots shteinting the bed was about as good as it gets for me. I've never cheered for an NFL team not named "Eagles" as hard as I cheered for the Jets yesterday. They're everything I wish the Eagles were. Bad ass defense, great running game, and a coach who isn't a snivelling farging flag.
Interesting how some people view things.
Could really care less about either, but I found myself rooting harder for the Patriots because
1) I always want to see the truly great succeed and carry on a legacy.
2) The comeback factor
3) I hate hate all New York sports
How anyone can cheer for those iceholes is beyond me, but whatever floats your boat, dude.

i'm quite jealous of jets fans right now. they have a colorful & brutally honest fantastic head coach and great players playing a style of football on both sides of the ball that i love... (bad pun alert!) definitely green with envy.
you love running the ball into the middle of the line and hoping to break one because you cant do anything else when your quarterback is as bad as mark sanchez is?
It won a playoff game, which is more than the Eagles have managed in the last two years.
nothing says bad quite like a qb rating of 127.3 with three touchdowns.
his one strength i suppose is since he throws the ball 25 feet over everyones head it becomes pretty tough to pick those off
need i remind you eli manning won a super bowl. so did trent dilfer.
Dan Marino didn't.
granted i never really saw marino in his prime but im guessing the late 80s/early 90s dolphins never had quite the defense the jets have
they had a good defense (killer b's) but absolutely no semblance of a running game. that's why they lost in the playoffs.
Sanchez is about as inconsistent as you can find in a qb. You never know who the hell youre going to get.
He goes 18-30+ something with no td's one week, then throws 3 td's the next.
Pitsburgh's pressure should rattle the shtein out of him and get them right back to the super bowl. The big difference with this next game is unlike a Moss-less Patriots team that couldnt stretch the field for squat and relied on 5 yd passes all game, Mike Wallace can do just that. Jets defense has been exposed on numerous occasions this year, and its going to happen again.
Pittsburgh's o-line is bad enough that I wouldn't be surprised if the Jets win this game
Just saw SalPal interview Bart Scott after the game....Sal looked scared which was hilarious but not as funny as Scott saying "[Patriots defense] is so bad they couldn't stop a nose bleed"
Oh Im not saying its a lock, and anything could happen based off turnovers, but I just think Sanchez makes more mistakes here because the Steelers will make them one-dimensional.
This is the one game where the Jets have to completely rely on Mark Sanchez, and because of that that's why I think they lose.
I was rooting for the Pats yesterday, I hate anytime from new york and what makes the Pats hateable? because they are good?
next week will be the only time i root for a new york team.
I can't stand the Patriots. Kraft is a bad man.
I typically hate New York teams as well but the Jets are different for the reasons I described. If it came down to a choice between the Jets & the Patriots, I'll take the Jets every time.
I don't have a problem with the Jets because they've been insignificant for 40 years
new york sucks

1. Packers
2. Bears
3. Jets
4. Steelers

Yeah....it makes me want vomit. There is so much Steelers crap around my area now it is ridiculous. It wasn't any where like that just 10 years ago. Honestly if the only team that I don't hate on that list is the Jets. I
I'm all up on the Jets bandwagon.
I love the shtein talking and I love Rex Ryan.
Mark Sanchez (and Schottenheimer) is their achilles. Too inconsistent still.
But I hope they beat PIT again.
A Jets fan is an Islanders fan, a Nets fan, a Mets fan.
I know the latter doesn't fly well with you Philly people but I hate the Yankees, Knicks, Rangers, and Giants. Insofar as I LOVE NYC--and I do, I farging love that city--the Jets are the only football team in NY outside of Buffalo that I could bring myself to support. Jets/Steelers. I want to know if the Jets can solve that defense. Their running game will likely be stymied so they'll need to win with Sanchez, which they were able to do to a certain extent last week. But I think Steelers are a tougher draw defense-wise.
Also I
really don't want to be subjected to two more weeks of the Polamalu Song, Pittsburgh Polka and other such sound pollution, so I have more at stake.
By the way, there should be sub-zero wind chills for both games. Great to have no dome, southern, or west coast teams in the championships. All four teams are northern and play outside. I don't think that has happened in over 20 years.
I'm happy when they are generally uncomfortable even before they start to bash each other to death, but I have to admit it brings me greater pleasure when they freeze than when they sweat.
also all teams have amazing jerseys and two of them are original nfl members with three of the four going back to the 30's...really the only way it could be better is if the steelers were playing the browns
Or if, I dunno, the Eagles were playing.
Only thing better than the Eagles being in right now would be the taterskins, right igy?

what is that awful bears fight song and when did they start playing it after touchdowns...dope rhyme biters
The Chicago Bears fight song, Bear Down, Chicago Bears, was introduced in 1941. Though Jerry Downs is listed as the composer, it actually is a pseudonym for Al Hoffman (who also wrote the words and music for the song If I Knew You Were Coming I'd Have Baked a Cake).
Hoffman's words for the Bears' fight song:
Bear down, Chicago Bears, make every play clear the way to victory;
Bear down, Chicago Bears, put up a fight with a might so fearlessly.
We'll never forget the way you thrilled the nation with your T-formation.
Bear down, Chicago Bears, and let them know why you're wearing the crown.
You're the pride and joy of Illinois, Chicago Bears, bear down.

Is Jay downing bottles of pisco? The intentional grounding might have been ticky tack, but it was in line with the rule. No one was within 5 yds of that ball. The non call on Olsen was hard to miss though.

letting rex ryan off the hook for that horrible 3rd and 17 call at the end of the first half?
jets had 15 yards total offense in the game and with a little over a minute left in the half they are in the shotgun trying to get a 3rd and 17?...disgraceful call that cost them seven points
If that's Brady it's an incomplete pass.
tom brady also wouldnt have had 12 yards total offense with less than a minute left in the first half...thats what makes the call especially bad....that ryan let his zesty qb be put in that position
Yeah that call to have him throw there was brutal.
