Sign up for this site, they have people in your local area giving away things they're going to toss. My uncle got a nice dresser and a few other things from here:http://www.freecycle.org/
Title: Re: The Free Thread

I used that site to get rid of a waterbed.  The people who show up are the flea market types who will in turn try to turn a buck.  Still its nice to get rid of shtein, and they do have some good stuff available.

I gave away these two tower nightstand/dresser things that were falling apart, they were junk guys that were trying to make a buck but like you said it was nice to get rid of it and at least someone is going to put it to use rather than tossing it and having it sit in a dump for eternity.

freecycle is good shtein.  just last week I used it to get a truckload of free wood chips from a guy who had a tree taken down on his property.  if you use it, caveat emptor.  you never know who/what is actually going on, so be wary.  we brought tools to clean up the site after ourselves...this kind of consideration is often not always shown

There are some seriously sweet prices on there.  I think it was last month they had a promotion where you paid a couple hundred bucks and could fly as much, and anywhere Jet Blue flies for like a month or something.  You just show up at the airport, pick a destination and get on the plane.  If they run that promotion again, I'd have a hard time passing it up.

yeah that jetblue sept. - oct. thing is amazing, pays for itself with 2 trips. i missed it by about 3 hours this year.

I guess they did that promo last year too.   A couple of radio sports talk guys out here were talking about how they bought a pass last year and spent that month just flying around the country going from one sporting event to another, often times hitting up 2 different games in 2 different cities in the same day.
Title: Re: Cheap shtein

How is it that JetBlue doesn't fly in and out of Philly?

It's retarded that I have to fly on Southwest which absolutely sucks, btw.
Title: Re: Cheap shtein
Post by: Sgt PSN on September 07, 2010, 07:07:55 PM
I think it took Philly a while to get Southwest as well, didn't it?  Wouldn't really surprise me at all if Philly doesn't have JetBlue because PHL is being difficult/trying to get more money out of it.

Southwest isn't bad.  Their rates are almost always equal to or less than other airlines.  And when you factor in that they don't charge you for baggage, that's approx an extra $40-50 that stays in your pocket.  And changing flights is easy and usually free.  Sure, seat assignments are first come, first serve and there are basically no amenities on the plane to speak of, but it's still one of the best deals out there.

Post by: ice grillin you on September 07, 2010, 07:19:35 PM
you wont find a lot of jetblue flights out of southwest hubs...thats why both bwi and philly dont have many jetblue options...because jetblue models their airline after southwest and are a direct competitor im guessing southwest pays those airports a nice chunk of change to limit jetblues availability
Title: Re: Cheap shtein
Post by: PhillyPhreak54 on September 07, 2010, 08:30:56 PM
SWA is more expensive out of Houston for Vegas and Philly (and practically any other place I want to fly) so I always fly on Continental.

Speaking of which....people are idiots on planes. The carry on luggage thing is a mess. I wanted to slaughter about 5 people on the flights to and from PHL this weekend.
Title: Re: Cheap shtein
Post by: Diomedes on September 07, 2010, 08:38:26 PM

Title: Re: Cheap shtein
Post by: PhillyPhreak54 on September 07, 2010, 08:42:23 PM
I agree.

It holds the damn plane up.

People with bags the size of mini-fridges trying to heft them above, gate agents not enforcing carry on rules (although the PHL lady was on her game yesterday morning), iceholes who sit in the back throw their shtein up in the front bins and all the space gets taken up.

Alright so if I'm reading that site right, the catch is your bids aren't refundable?  So when you bid you lose that $$ even if you don't get the item, and that's how they make money.

Alright so if I'm reading that site right, the catch is your bids aren't refundable?  So when you bid you lose that $$ even if you don't get the item, and that's how they make money.

Exactly.  They throw a $500 ipad up for auction and start the bidding off at $.01 and bids increase 1 cent at a time.  To bid, you gotta buy bid packs which at best, will come out to about 60 cents/per bid (960 bid pack sells for $576.00).  So when that $500 ipad sells for $95.00, that's 9500 individual bids that have been placed on that item.  9500 bids x .60/bid = $5700.00 worth of bids that people spent on that one auction.

That's one hell of a profit.  Not to mention that every time a bid is placed, a few seconds get added back on the clock, so there's no swooping in at the last second and outbidding everyone.  They claim it's so "everyone gets a chance to bid" but that's a load of bull.  They add the time on there because they make their money on the bids, not the items.

The only way you don't lose bids is if you set parameters for auto-bidding and those parameters are never met.  Ex: set the auto-bid to bid on an ipad once the auction price reaches $100.00 with a maximum of 25 bids.  If the auction ends before reaching $100.00, then you don't lose any bids.

Title: Re: Cheap shtein
Post by: Eagles_Legendz on October 27, 2010, 08:54:00 PM
It's like gambling essentially.  You could get lucky and win a $200 prize for 3 bucks or you could spend $100 bidding on items you don't win.
Title: Re: Cheap shtein
Post by: Sgt PSN on October 28, 2010, 10:13:59 AM
It's brilliant if you're the guy who started up that site.....getting a bunch of people to pay you for the possibility of getting something dirt cheap.  A specific item might sell for pennies on the dollar, so it's a great deal for the winner, but chances are the site makes close to 10x the retail value of the item that they just sold so it's an even better deal for them.

I found out last week that the dump on base has piles and piles of firewood that you can haul away for free so I took a swing by during my lunch break today and filled up the bed of my truck.  It's not really "firewood" in the sense that it's a bunch of trees cut up into similar sized pieces of wood that you can just throw in your fireplace, but more like a couple huge piles of tree parts that you can take home with you and cut into similar sized pieces of wood to throw in your fireplace.  I don't have a chainsaw or log splitter though, so I pretty much had to limit myself to pieces that I want to cut manually, but I still made out with a pretty good haul.  Since I'm off on Thursday, I'll likely be donning a flannel shirt with a turtleneck under it while hack this stuff up.

i made the mistake of buying coffee there last week on the way to work and it literally tasted like a combo of nuclear waste and mercury.

Worst shtein on earth.  I swear they get it from the oil drippings from all the early delivery trucks.  Just god awful.

When we were in Philadelphia several years ago I really enjoyed the coffee at WaWa

Papa John's is offering a very tasty freebie -- a free Super Bowl pizza to every American -- if the big game this Sunday goes into overtime. Which it never has. But if it does, the chain estimates it'll give away 100,000 large pies.

To get in on the deal, make sure to open an account with Papa John's and sign up for Papa Points by Feb. 5, 2011, at 11:59 p.m. PST. Registering makes it easy to order pizza online. Then, if the big game goes into overtime, you'll get a credit of 25 Papa Points, which you can redeem online for a free pie.

I know a guy in West Philly (legitimate business) who owns a warehouse full of slightly damaged furniture/mattresses that he sells for 1/3 the price of new stuff. I bought my daughter a twin sized sealy plush pillow top mattress for $200, same mattress is selling at Mattress Giant/Sleepys for $500-600. Anyone in need of his number send me a pm.

Somewhere along the line people started thinking that flour is good for you, or at leas that it isn't bad for you. Flour is totally fine as long as your a very active person. Kids who play sports can eat flour all they want. But make no mistake about it, refined flour is basically just sugar unless you immediately execrise and convert those carbohydrates into fuel.

Eating flour post exercise is fine too because your body will use those carbs to refuse. I learned that from your boy Tim Ferriss.

I'm not sure what that is, but if this Taco Truck sells the worlds best tacos, then I completely agree.

Yes.  And you can find them on nearly every corner in LA.

DH, he's a certified idiot. No question about that.

I don't disagree.  But I'm still right.

DH, you've never been to a taco truck aka roach-coach? 2am, after a night of drinking, get an order of 5 tacos, squeeze some limes on them, eat, and chase them with a soda...or go with the Torta De Asada.

Pretty much DD.

As far as DD goes, it's either great or awful, depending on the day.

I can honestly say I've never had a bad cup of coffee at DD.  But I'm not a coffee snob either.  I brew Folgers every day for farg sake and if I'm out and buy a cup, it's usually at a gas station.  DD is about as uppity as I get when it comes to coffee.

I drink Starbucks every day but I get it and brew it myself.    I'd drink Dunkin Dark too.  It's fine.   We have a Biggby in town now and it's damn fine coffee.  It's not near the house or on the way to work but if I had to get in the car for coffee, I'd get that shtein in a heartbeat.   Believe it or not Krispy Kreme has some ridiculous shtein and it's cheap as a motherfarger too.  Less than $2 for a big ass coffee and they have real cream there too, not zesty half and half either.

So unlike those openly self righteous hipster douche bag commies Romes who go into Starbucks everyday, you're a self righteous hipster douche bag commie fag still hiding in the closet?

You're a lucky guy, then. Maybe it's because there are so many of them up there, but I'd say it's close to a 60/40 proposition whether the coffee will be fresh.

If it's a new pot, the coffee is great, but I've had some where it's clearly been sitting around too long and tastes like filthy, burnt dishwater. I drink it black, so there's no covering it up. It's not cheap, either. At Starbucks, at least I know it'll be fresh...and it's about the same price because I'm not getting some specialty drink.

As a matter of fact, if I there was a Wawa and a DD next door to one another, at least half the time I'd go for the Wawa coffee.

Agreed.  But I'm all about paying the least amount possible for coffee and DD is like splurging.  Besides, there's a DD 2 miles from my house. Closest Wawa is like 70.  I live in Sheetz country.

Jacks?  Like the game?

I really don't know what they sell other than the standard convenience store inventory.  I don't frequent them very often. They do have the same MTO setup as Wawa and I've had a few of their sammiches, which aren't bad at all, but that's all I really know.
