Title: Happy Memorial Day everyone
Post by: shorebird on May 31, 2010, 05:56:57 AM
It would be nice if today, we could put aside politics, and remember the men and women who died in the U.S. military. Just remember the person, and take a moment to raise your glass. At the very least, they deserve that.

I love the people that line up for parades on holidays like Memorial Day. Hate to steal an igyism but if you ever wanted to see what MA is there is no better example.

Band of Brothers marathon is on Spike

Is there anyone here who feels for the men and women who died on the battle field?  Especailly WWII or the Revolution. Thats what today is really about, not parades and bbq's or paid days off.

The U.S. hasn't fought a necessary war since WWII.

I feel for those who died since then mostly because they died for nothing.  For the draftees, I feel a little more I suppose, but it's a sad story for all of them:  earnest people who bought a line of shtein about protecting America, being fed bullshtein propaganda and then being fed to the dogs.

I didn't say America, I said "here".

Your opinion of America is a bit skewed. Get past the teenagers and you'll see people that are at odds over government, but most respect the people who died for this country, no matter what war or conflict it was in. But, I know around here with most of the posters, it's the cool thing to be indifferent about what the real meaning of today is. Watch some of BOB, and listen to the commentary from the old vets. Yeah, they're all white, and here most would be considered racist middle Americans.

It must be a hard pill to swallow when you know that every freedom you enjoy, everything you have, your house, job, your weekend holidays, you owe to men like that, who fought and died for the people of this country, for you.

My grandfather fought for those things in WWII.  Everyone since has fought for oil, for political ends, for lies.

Do you really think that the men and women dying right now in the desert are dying for nothing? That there is nothing good coming from our presence there? I might agree that there is no immanent threat to our freedom, but really?

What about being freed from the oppression of a political tyrant like Hussein?

i dont not care about soldiers...like dio said its sickening that they die for nothing...but also like dio i care less when its voluntary...because of that i dont feel much different about a solider than i do a fireman or a police...all honorable professions that deserve their due nothing less nothing more

They are dying for their buddies.  Which isn't nothing, of course.  But it isn't Freedom.  They are dying because it's their job and the politicians have sent them over there to do it.

My freedom has nothing to do with Iraq or Afganistan.  So yeah, really.

Hussein oppressed me no more than the equally repugnant Mugabe did.  Which is to say..not at all.   I don't think uprooting Hussein was worth a single drop of American blood.
