Howard Eskin aka The Big Sports Update says that his knee is in horrible shape and that is the main problem with him right now. Eagles doctors believe he wouldn't pass a physical with another team. He's going to see some doctors about his knee and will ask them if he should continue to play. The Eagles expect the doctors tell him it is time to hang em up and his knee is too bad to continue playing.
Could be the end of B West.
Eskin says if he doesn't end up retiring, then his career as an Eagle is definitely over.
Don't worry, he isn't injury prone.

Hard to believe how far and fast he's fallen after the 2007 season when he was arguably the best player in the league.
Sad for him, but I think we saw this coming all year. When we drafted him he was really just supposed to be a lottery ticket to replace Brian Mitchell on returns and maybe fill a Meggett-type role as a third down back. I think we got way more than we expected going in, and Westbrook probably achieved and earned more than he expected coming out of Nova. I believe he had significant knee injurie(s) in college that made his value questionable to begin with.
I am ok with the end of the Westbrook era in Philadelphia. He was exciting and I loved watching him play. It certainly beat watching an aging Warrick Dunn which I think was plan A. Hopefully he finds someplace to play if he has anything left .... but more importantly I hope that he has saved some cash and retires with a sound mind and body.

Great post. Welcome back. And agreed 100%. Thanks for the years Westy!
yeah, westy has certainly given us some great memories over the years. gw punt return against the giants, game clinching long td run against buffalo and i can't even begin to recall all of the huge plays he's made off screen passes. he def gave the eagles and us fans more than we could reasonably expect from a 3rd round pick from villanova. he's gotta be reid's best overall draft pick.
just took a quick glance at his career stats wondering if he's hof worthy, but with just under 6000 rushing yds, i don't think that will get him there. if you add in his receiving stats then he comes up just short of 10k total yds and just over 10k if you add in his return yardage. not to mention he did have back to back years of 2000+ total yds.
that said, i seriously doubt he's a hof'er but still an eagles all-time great. personally, i hope he just calls it quits and gets out while he's still somewhat healthy.
Certainly not shocking news. I was fairly confident he was done during this year, like most. Hope he has the money and sense to retire.
not that it mattered but its good to know andy ran him out there for the two games against dallas. well done.
Wacthing him against Dallas was painful, he was definitely a step slower this season.
I think there is no question that he IS an all time Eagles Great.
In a very large way the Eagles success though out the past few years is a direct result of his contributions.
Mr. Westbrook, you have a phone call from a Mr. Brown.

He was timid out there. Sort of like a mouse in a snake-quarium.
but an offseason working out will mean he comes back healthy??? right?!?!?!?!?
Maybe. We'll know for sure if he does some youtube videos and a little rapping.
Wow, one of those things that still comes as a surprise to me even though you could see it coming.
QuoteEagles will release Brian Westbrook
Posted by Mike Florio on February 23, 2010 2:08 PM ET
Though he has indicated a desire to continue playing, the Philadelphia Eagles have announced that they will be releasing veteran running back Brian Westbrook.
"Brian is one of the greatest Eagles of all time and he is even a better person and leader," coach Andy Reid said. "In my mind, there has not been a more versatile running back that the NFL has seen. I had a conversation with Brian this morning to let him know. This is by far the most difficult part of this job. We wanted to make this move now in order to maximize Brian's chances of landing with another NFL team."
Added owner Jeffrey Lurie: "Brian Westbrook is one of the most electric players in the history of this franchise and is certainly also one of the most popular. He was personally one of the my favorite players to watch each and every Sunday and his playmaking abilities, leadership and values will be missed."
"We all know how valuable Brian was as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles and he will certainly go down as one of the greatest Eagles of all time," said president Joe Banner. "But what really showed me how special a person Brian is, was watching the way he interacted with my children. That said more to me about Brian than anything else he could have done on the playing field. We will miss him both as a person and as a player."
Westbrook was due to earn a base salary of $7.25 million in 2010.
Interest in him could be limited. Apart from a lengthy history of knee and ankle problems, Westbrook's multiple concussions from the 2009 season make him a risk for repeated problems with respect to one of the hottest-button subjects the league currently faces.
SHOCKING
Wow. Tough going for BWest and it will be hard to see the Eagles without him. Second best Eagle RB behind Van Buren. He would have been even more incredible if he could just stay healthy.
Sucks. Gonna miss him. Him and Dawk have been my favorite players of the last 10 years overall.

My dominating 2004-2008 fantasy keepers are dropping like flies.
yeah damn, i'm gonna have to check the board and other places more often....
I had to know idea lol honestly just read Shawn Andrews talking about missing B. Westbrooke on his twitter, i thought we had traded him at first lol was gonna be upset.

Van Buren - led league for four years in rushing, Eagles leader in TD's. Hall of Fame.
BWest - All time Eagle for total yards. Won't get a sniff at the Hall.

Westbrook said the Eagles never offered a paycut to stay with the team.
he's on WIP now, btw.
Why would they want his useless ass on the team any more at any price? His knees are held together with shoelaces and his brain has been battered into goo and they have a Westbrook clone on the roster waiting to get playing time.
i want him off the team so that shady can stop using his penis as a pacifier and become his own running back
i wouldn't call McCoy a clone...he's not as quick as Westbrook and his blocking leaves something to be desired
im not talking about the kind of player he is...im talking about his confidence and attitude
every other word out of his mouth last year was westbrook this westbrook that...it was ridiculous...whatever shady is going to become it wasnt going to happen until westbrook was gone

Though running back Brian Westbrook says he has no animosity toward the Eagles, he told Dan Patrick earlier today that he thought he'd have a chance to take less money in order to stay in Philly.
"I was a little bit surprised, thinking they maybe would give me an opportunity to renegotiate things," Westbrook said. "For [the Eagles], it's always business, it's always money."
He's right.
I'm mildly surprised they didn't ask him to play for cheaper and just sent him packing. I don't think he's done yet.
Quote from: PhillyPhreak54 on February 25, 2010, 09:44:35 PM

define done.
he's done being a 1000 yd rusher/receiver. but for a team looking for a back to get maybe 7-10 total touches (rush and rec) a game then i suppose he still has some value and could possibly be productive. basically, he's a 3rd down back. but not even an every 3rd down back. more like every 3rd 3rd down.
Quote from: PhillyPhreak54 on February 25, 2010, 09:44:35 PM

of course you dont
what part of a cripplied, mashed potatoed brained running back to you want. hes had 1000 concussions in the past year and wore out his fragile knees by 2006.
he had a great run but its been over. the fact that it took the eagles this long to draft a player like shady is the core of the problem.
He's not done but with shady in the backfield he's done for the Eagles.
no one knows if hes done or not because no one knows what an offseason will do to his injury problems...obviously signs point to it being a distinct possibility...but i also wouldnt be the least bit suprised to see him have a 600 yard 50 catch type season either
the key is his knee...who knows if its some chronic unfixable problem that would force him to retire
he's had the same gimpy knees since he played at villanova so that's not the issue. the issue is 7.25 million dollars and lurie got convinced by the four-eyed troll he has running the team not to pay it.
you dont have the same knees after 8 years of pro football that you had before 8 years of pro football...his one knee in particular has steadily declined even since 2007.....its his biggest problem right now...the question is is it a career ending problem
and im not even talking about him in relation to the eagles and banner inc.
im talking about next year and how productive he may or may not be...if he even plays at all
Cooked.
I haven't really waded in here yet. But it's a non-issue. The best player in the world is meaningless if he can't get on the field. And over the last few years, he's been a question mark at best. And even when he is on the field, he's not the same guy-- especially as a runner.
He could absolutely go someplace and be a nice complementary player who sees limited time. But he can't be a guy you count on...because you simply can't count on him to be available when you need him most. He necessarily has to be a "nice to have, but not critical" component on a team at this point.
He was one of my favorites, and I was pushing for him even when everyone was slobbering over Buckhalter in the early years...but he's been a frustration and a distraction more than anything the last couple of years. Ideally, the Eagles need a mad scientist to take parts and traits of Westbrook and McNabb to make a whole player. And of course we'd have to go with Westbrook's accuracy as a thrower in that special mix.
Never mind the knee, if I was Westy I'd be more concerned about the concussion issues. It's one thing if you can't walk well when you're old, it's another if you can't talk or take care of yourself.
for real.
hang it up and move on with life
i think he needs to call it quits but doubt he will. if a team does sign him a for what would be veteran depth he'll still miss at least 6-7games due to injuries.
sucks to see his run here end no matter what though. :(
Westbrook will be another Duce Staley.
