MDS...explain that 'First' mentality in journalism....

I understand that before the internet...whoever 'broke' the news of whatever event gave that journalist some clout? But...now you'll hear of some event, someone breaks the news...but within minutes...its all over the place.

Does breaking the news first still have any weight?

I'm clueless when it comes to this shtein and always wondered.

Joe Rollino, sometimes known as the Great Joe Rollino, the Mighty Joe Rollino or the World's Strongest Man. The 104-year-old Brooklynite, who once lifted 635 pounds with one finger and lifted 475 pounds with his teeth and bent quarters with his fingers, passed away yesterday morning after being struck by a van while out for his daily five mile walk.

I deserve it. I was totally kidding about the midget from Poltergeist, but Zinn and Salinger were written on my little note pad as replacements in April. To make matters worse no one has Zinn on their list and I could have cashed in big points for him. I could beat myself up over listing Colin Ferrel and not either of them, but I really really hope that Colin Ferrel dies. Soon. So really, there was nothing to be done.

Walter Morrison, inventor of the frisbee

Quote...According to Kennedy, Morrison and his future wife, Lu, used to toss a tin cake pan on the beach in California. The idea grew as Morrison considered ways to make the cake pans fly better and after serving as a pilot in World War II, Morrison began manufacturing his flying discs in 1948.

C R Johnson

QuoteA professional extreme skier who competed in the Winter X Games died Wednesday after he fell and hit his head on a rock outcropping while taking a run down a steep chute at California's Squaw Valley.

C.R. Johnson, 26, was skiing with a group of friends when he fell while trying to negotiate a "very, very tight, rocky area," said Jim Rogers, a member of the Lake Tahoe-area resort's ski patrol.

She's been through a number of failed marriages, has a bunch of kids - adopted and otherwise - and has had some pretty farged up things going in in her life.

Still...I'd hit it. (And then I'd get as far away as possible.)

Ex MLB-er Willie Davis. (http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/Long-time-Los-Angeles-Dodgers-CF-Willie-Davis-found-dead-030910?gt1=39002)

QuoteIn 1996, Davis was arrested for allegedly threatening his parents with a samurai sword and ninja-style throwing stars, saying he would burn their house down if they didn't give him $5,000. Prosecutors eventually decided not to file charges.

His mother said it wasn't the first time he wanted money and she had given it to him in the past. Davis had become a Buddhist more than 30 years earlier, and in the six months before the attack, had started carrying the sword and a dagger that he wore in a holster, his mother said.

Sanity is awesome.

Cuellar was a good pitcher and a better man. Sad to see him go. The Orioles will never, ever be close to what that team was back then, though I don't know if they were any better than the Phillies are right now.

I remember Brooks saying that whenever Cuellar pitched he knew he'd be busy bacause of all the junk Cuellar threw. He had one of the most wicked screwballs ever.

Its weird, I was just reading an interview with her where she talked about how excited she was for Betty White and her sudden popularity with the younger generation. I commented on how great she looked, etc. Then like 2 weeks later, she's dead.

Maybe I need to start saying how great Munson's looking these days.....  :paranoid

I saw Giraldo do stand up in maybe 2002-03 time frame.....it was right before he started getting popular and making appearances on shows like Tough Crowd.  Anyway, his stand up was great and he really laid into this drunk bitch who was there for her bacholorette party because she and her skank friends were talking loud and being obnoxious.  I suppose it's times like that that being an insult comic really comes in handy.  Too bad phones weren't recording video yet because he made this bitch farging cry and I wish I could have recorded it.  Security didn't even needto take her away, she left on her own.  It was pretty awesome.

QuoteThree-time world surfing champion Andy Irons of Kauai died today in a hotel room in Texas, family and friends confirmed.
His death is being investigated as a possible overdose of methodone, according to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office. An autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow but the exact cause of death may require a toxicology test, which could take 60 to 90 days to complete.
Irons had competed briefly this past weekend at a World Championship Tour contest in Puerto Rico where his family said today that he was suffering from dengue fever.

Geoffrey Crawley

As absurd as it sounds now, it was this guy who finally disproved a 60 odd year old claim that the Cottingley photographs captured garden fairies.

QuoteA polymath who was variously a skilled pianist, linguist, chemist, inventor and editor, Mr. Crawley died on Oct. 29, at 83, at his home in Westcliff-on-Sea, England.

Wait that might not be right. Eh whatever. Some allstar third baseman from that era is somehow distantly related to me. Clearly it's a key part of my life.

I still plan on drinking for a few week in case anybody was worried.

(well....not anymore)

QuoteIn an interview with the Catholic Standard & Times earlier this year, Mahan talked about a slump he had in the minor leagues.

"The Augustinian priests kept telling me to have faith in the saints and to ask St. Jude for help when I would step up to bat," Mahan said. "After trying this, it was quickly obvious that St. Jude couldn't hit a curveball, either."

He should have tried voodoo.
