For Brandon Gibson and a 5th.
Our new MLB I guess.

holla.
Shellshocked!
Interesting. I guess he takes over inside, or he will play strong side with Gocong moving inside. But I'd prefer and think they play him at MIKE.
Sucks to see Gibson go, but he was nothing more (so far) than a training camp all-star while Witherspoon is a proven commodity.
Witherspoon was a guy a lot of Eagles fans wanted when he was a FA from Carolina
QuoteOct 19 LB Will Witherspoon had an MRI that was negative on the hip/back he injured in overtime Sunday against Jacksonville. Witherspoon was "really sore," according to coach Steve Spagnuolo and struggled to get on and off the plane Sunday.
:-D
NFL.com bio (http://www.nfl.com/players/willwitherspoon/profile?id=WIT150248)
has put up decent numbers throughout his career and the Rams gave him $15M guaranteed to go there, so he should have 1 or 2 more years left on his deal. I guess he could move back to the weak side when Bradley returns next year...
Instantly probably their best LB, that's not saying much though.
OMG Super Blow!
better than same ol shtein at linebacker position. gives me a tad more hope, not much though. it will take a few weeks for me to recover from sundays game. only to get my hopes up and then the next reid failure will come probably at or during the playoffs. then i will go on bitching about reid for another offseason, reid will get an extended contract. then the vicious cycle will continue. FML
Whoopdie friggen' doo!
This was needed though, especially if Gaither is out for any length of time. Hopefully Spags had Witherspoon coached up right and he isn't too crippled to jump in.

?? Its a solid move, Not sure why anyone wouldn't think this was needed and important right now.
Well I just looked at their depth chart, he is #1 at Mike LB. Not his best position that is why he hasn't been as good with the Rams most of his time there.
not gonna change much but he is an improvement...i will give partial credit but not full to the FO because the move was made due to their inability/refusal to properly address the position in the first place
As long as it kills the Trotter experiment, it's all good.
Sorry, Phreak.

We could have Dick Butkus at MLB and it wouldn't matter as long as Reid is calling the plays on offense. Sorry if I'm a little bitter.
Dick Butkas now is better than any linebacker on the squad.
NO HYPERBOLE!

All gravy baby...but I think he will still contribute on goal line and short yardage packages. In game two back after that lay off, I can't expect the guy to be Pro Bowl Trot, ya know?
Also - I have to give the FO credit for getting a solid LB here. Although a few years too late (they pursued him during his FA year)...a real life LB in Eagles green!!?!
Blaine Bishop Part Deux
Will Witherspoon is Blaine Bishop? :sly
That's idiotic...
Dhani Jones part deux ^-^
QuoteReid: Witherspoon brought in to be middle linebacker
The Eagles acquired linebacker Will Witherspoon from St. Louis for wide receiver Brandon Gibson and a fifth-round pick in 2010.
Today is the NFL trading deadline and the Eagles clearly had a need at linebacker. Gibson looked good in training camp but has not been playing.
Andy Reid was clear about his intentions for Witherspoon, "I'm bringing [Witherspoon] in here to be my MIKE linebacker."
The moves comes on the heels of a rough performance by Jeremiah Trotter against the Raiders and Omar Gaither's foot injury, although Gaither indicated that he did not think he was seriously hurt. Reid said Gaither will see a foot specialist.
Witherspoon, in his eighth season out of Georgia, sustained injuries to his hip and back in Sunday's overtime loss at Jacksonville. The 29-year-old had to be assisted to the sidelines by trainers. An MRI indicated only a bruise.
Witherspoon, 6-1, 239, signed a 6-year, $33 million deal (including $15 million guaranteed) with St. Louis in 2006. In his first season with the Rams, he played in all 16 games and recorded a career-high 113 tackles and three sacks. In 2007 he recorded 110 tackles and a career-high seven sacks and was named Team MVP for 2007
In 2004, he played in Super Bowl for Carolina and had a career-high 16 tackles. He ended the campaign with a total of 99 tackles, one sack and one interception. He was a Panthers' third-round pick in 2002.
Reid also said there is a "good chance" that Todd Herremans will make his season debut against Washington on Monday night. The scan on his surgically repaired foot looked good, Reid said.
this should end well
Gold Standard!!
so a slightly younger, less gimpy version of trot?
Totally different from Trotter. Witherspoon is an undersized LB with good cover skills. If the DTs don't plug the run well, then this team could get hurt against physical RBs because Witherspoon isn't a big stout LB. He's not terrible against the run, but it is definitely the weaker part of his game. He's more of a playmaker/disrupting LB.
i really can't see how anyone couldn't love this move. they didn't give up anything of tangable value and got a very solid player. would have been nice to get him him 3 years ago, but better late than never.
cool, i hope he can score.

It absolutely is a no-brainer. Just put it this way. If this deal isn't made, then we have Trotter playing the majority of the snaps against the NFC East tight ends coming up on the schedule.
This team could easily find itself below .500 and falling way back in the playoff race in that scenario.
It will anyway. They probably beat the Skins, but the Giants is a bona fide loss. Dallas, 50:50; they're as farged up as the Birds.

In the NFC, any team that gives half effort could windup with the 6th seed. Figure at this point the Giants, Saints and Vikings are locks. Go ahead and put Atlanta and Arizona in the most likely category if there's no snipers at practice. Chicago, Green Bay, San Fran, or even Philly or Dallas could back in to the last spot at 8-8.
no chance an 8-8 team makes it this year....theres are so many bad teams in the nfl that records are going to be padded more than ever...i wouldnt be suprised if some 10 win teams get left out
In the AFC, maybe, but not the NFC.

nyg
no
arz
minn
that leaves two spots for
atl (was - car - tb x2 - buff)
chi (cle - sf - stl - det - arz)
gb (cle - arz - tb - sf - det - sea - arz)
dal (was x 2 - sea - oak)
phi (was x 2 - sf)
with those teams remaining schedules you dont think two teams out of that mix will win at least 10 games this year?
dallas sucks, atlanta is in as the 5 seed
do the math again
lol....wha?
take dallas out of the equation. they blow.
atlanta is >>>> than gb, phil and chi. much better. they are IN.
come on, dooks.
When adding a stiff like Will Witherspoon is met with cheers from Eagles fans, you know it's time for a collective dope slap.

no one said a word about which team was the best out of that group or how the seeding will fall...just that two of those five will finish better than 8-8 and very likely 10 or more wins...but by all means please continue rambling

ill give them a modicum of credit for being proactive and trying to save a unsavable situation but yeah anyone who is actually excited about this move says more about the state of the eagles than anything else
rome says witherspoon is a stiff, you say theres no need to be happy because the world is cold and dark.....christ
the eagles have been getting burnt for how many years on the inside zone because of the lack of cover skills by the lb core--more specifically the mlb position. so they upgrade to very nice cover lb and a sure tackler, and yet since the eagles arent the 85 Bears keep your jerseys in the closet.
whats it like to be so miserable?
you wanna be excited by this by all means go ahead...thats what homers do
sorry if my goals are a tad bit higher
its been well noted that in order for you to even show a tooth of happiness you need the 72 Dolphins or the 27 Yankees on the field or burn your tickets, stay in your home..... the season is a failure
aim high
actually i have season tickets and go to every game but nice work

trotter sean jones and quinton demps were good moves too....sorry if i dont wait this one out before declaring it a winner

The playoff talk at this point of the year is hilarious. There are teams that look like champions now that by the end of the year won't even make it. I don't know who they are, but it happens pretty much every year. As far as the Eagles go they usually play well down the stretch under Reid.
He will likely adjust his gameplan for a few weeks and run more, then there will be another bad loss like last weeks. He will refuse to run and Donovan will get killed then we will all hear how Donovan sucks. Bottom line Reid is a douche.
Welcome to Philly Will! We actually had a linebacker sighting last night :yay
Jackson, Kolb, Witherspoon and Machlin are the bright spots this year in wehat would be a "yawner year".
Nice job from Witherspoon last night. Now if only reese would kill himself we'd have a 2 for 2 aftermath.
I love it....salty at me because you got owned by your own lack of football knowledge...farg out of here
