Title: Eagles/Chiefs Talk
Post by: PhillyPhanInDC on September 20, 2009, 04:13:44 PM
Well, they lost ugly to the Saints as most of us figured they would, but not because of Kolb. I think Kolb earned another start if McNabb can't go. How do they use Vick? Not sure KC does anything to scare anyone, although if the STs and defense play like they did against the Saints, they'll probably lose.

I agree about Kolb, unless McNabb is close to 100% why chance making it worse? Kolb played a lot better then I thought he would. Sit westbrook and go with McCoy.

Kolb will look even awesomer against the Chiefs than he did the Saints, which will make McNabb's return all the more entertaining.

The best use of Vick would be to have him stand on the sideline and shove his wang in Andy's mouth any time he looks like he's going to challenge a play.

or when he wants to pass on a 3rd and long pinned deep into their own redzone, already down, and with less than 2 min to go. AWESOME COACH!

I think the smart money is on McNabb sitting it out this upcoming week again too.  They can incorporate more wildcat with Vick being eligible to play next week.  I much rather have McNabb on 3 weeks continuous rest and be available for the remaining 13 games of the season than to not let it heal as best as it can and risk it being a huge issue every week.

If they can't handle the Chiefs next week, at home, with Michael Vick being eligible, then this team may have more problems than they displayed today.

Jay Glazer said that not only is McNabb's rib broke, it's broken off. Which means if he gets hit there, it could end his season. Sucks. Balls.

But Big Red said it was sticky!!

Kolb earned the start.

There is no reason these clowns shouldn't run off the next 5 as wins. They ought to be 6-1 after the Washington MNF game.

So, Jay Glazer...doesn't he always make some breaking news nonsense that turns out to be all wrong? Is he the only one reporting this information?

And mds, so not peaches and cream. But the defense isnt' that bad, its somewhere between the Saints and Panters game...the special teams...one big fat solution, get Clemons the farg off the field. His penalties on ST killed them all day. Fumbles happen, Hobbs shouldn't be doing that on a regular basis.

On a regular day with mcNabb, that game is a shootout and the Eagles COULD have won. At home, probably would have.

Kolb has about as much leadership skill as he does talent. There was, at NO TIME in that game, any confidence that they would march down the field and score. For all of those who say McNabb has none of the leadership skills or field general skills, Kolb should have put that into perspective yesterday.

kolb will start vs cheifs if mcnabb can't go.  i guess kolb might have sort of kind of played ok enough to earn another start but i'm kind of curious what was the point of bringing garcia in.  i'd rather still have baskett in this case.

The point is that McNabb is hurt and Vick is ineligible. If Kolb got hurt Jackson would have been wildcatting on every down.

Think RJS was screwing around.

Peter King FWIW:

Quote
5. I think the one thing all you Eagle/Vick followers need to understand about the quarterback situation in Philly is this: Vick was never, ever signed to be the regular quarterback, isn't ready to be the regular quarterback, and wouldn't be prepared to digest an entire gameplan until at least November. I can guarantee you that Andy Reid, if he needs a quarterback to sub for McNabb this week and/or next, is dead-set on Kevin Kolb. As Reid said to me Sunday night: "Kevin Kolb is the least of my worries. He threw for, what, 380 yards?'' Nope; 391.

6. I think the weirdness of the Shawn Andrews situation in Philadelphia is probably ultimately going to lead to him resuming his career elsewhere. After touting him as their right tackle of the future all offseason, the Eagles put Andrews on injured-reserve with a back injury last week, ending his season. There was indignity added to injury -- Reid said Andrews would not rehab his back at the Philadelphia training facility. Clearly there are some in the organization who don't think Andrews is hurt as badly as he says, and removing him from the building removes a distraction from the team.

It's interesting how teams treat injured players. Bill Parcells used to steer injured players away from hanging out with teammates. It was almost like he felt the injury bug was contagious, and he didn't want the healthy players catching anything.

It even got to the point last week that one of Andrews' friends on the team, Brian Westbrook, had to defend him by saying "he wouldn't fake something like this -- but at the same time, as his friend I'm going to support him. It's been kind of tough, because everyone thinks he's faking ...'' Reid always has spoken of Andrews as a player who could be all-pro at tackle and guard. Now it might have be for another coach.

No surprise Andy figures Kolb throwing for 350+ yards = super victory. BWest's comments about Andrews are eye opening to a degree. I knew that fans thought Andrews was bitchmade, but reading Westbrook say that means the locker room feels pretty much the same way. Hoyda. Glad he was asked to go to his shtein elsewhere.

You sure he wasn't qbing the raiders team that killed the eagles in one of those last vet years?

He did that was the year the Raiders went to the SB.

yeah, i believe 98 was the last time they've been to philly.  92 the eagles went to kc and again in 2000 and 2005.  don't remember them being in philly in the 80's earlier.  couldn't really tell you about anything prior to that.

KC and Philly never played at all in the 80s, I believe. The Eagles and Chiefs both finished 5th in their division multiple times in the 80s, and a fifth place finish only entitled you to two interconference games instead of four. The scheduling rules were pretty crazy back in the day.

It was the year before the Raiders went to the SB.  The score was 20-10, though it wasn't that close.  I remember that game fairly well and the Raiders pretty much controlled that game.

Jackson is one yard away from 150 yds. 100 yard day for Celek.

The OL was very good as well.

If Andy MUST throw the ball from the shotgun on 4th and 1 can he NOT roll the QB to the right to take half the field away and limit the options?

Kolb had some good passes but his receivers gave him all of those yards. Especially Pimp.

Healso had a shteinload of passed batted down and almost got 3 of his guys' heads taken off with errant passes. He played the farging Chefs. He's not a legitimate starting QB against a somewhat decent defense and I have zero confidence that he can do something with the game on the line.

The Kolb lovefest is really starting to make my stomach turn.  The fact that people are calling on him to start over McNabb makes me want to puke.

the only thing i feel good about with kolb is that should mcnabb get hurt during a game, i think kolb can come in and not totally suck.  let's be honest, in the preseason if someone told you that kolb would start 2 games this year, you'd mark them both down as losses and would think he'd throw 5 picks, complete less than 50% of his passes and maybe throw for 250 total yards.  he's still not starter material for the eagles, or any other team but perhaps he'll make a nice career for himself mostly as a backup qb.....kind of like trent dilfer.

Jackson on Jackson:
Quote
Jackson to Jackson: Stop the nonsense
Jamaal Jackson loved DeSean Jackson's 64-yard touchdown reception during the second quarter of the Eagles' 34-14 rout of the Kansas City Chiefs.

He didn't like the head-first-dive-into-a-front-split celebration so much.

"I told him, 'Great run, but let's try to exhibit some professionalism,' " the Eagles' center said. "There's nothing wrong with a little celebration, but once you put your body at risk, that's when you want to take a step back and look at the big picture. There's nothing wrong with just handing the ball to the ref."

Jamaal thinks DeSean might heed his advice, especially because the receiving Jackson also vomitted on the sideline after his celebration.

"I've been trying to talk to these young guys," Jamaal said. "I tell them, 'Hey man, this is our jobs. It isn't some pickup game. I told him that right after he scored. After that, he was on the sideline throwing up. You run that long of a time, you need to save some of your energy. He was hurling. I might seem like the old guy out there, but my position on this team is to try to lead these guys by example."

Eagles coach Andy Reid didn't make a big deal about the celebration, saying simply that it was a good indication to him that Jackson's strained groin was feeling OK.

True, but that is exactly my point. What defines a starter in the NFL? If half the NFL has garbage starting QBs, then isn't Kolb a starting QB in this league?
Title: Re: Eagles/Chiefs Talk
Post by: QB Eagles on September 28, 2009, 06:02:02 AM
I think Kolb's a lot like Cassel. Last year when Cassel had weapons, he was a pretty good quarterback. Now he's got no weapons and he's horrible. Put Kolb on the Chiefs and he'd probably look like Cassel yesterday.

There are a lot of starting quarterbacks who get by on having talent around them for their entire careers, though. So while I don't think Kolb is any McNabb, I also think it's somewhat ridiculous to continue to bitch about him when he's the first quarterback in the entire history of the NFL to throw for over 300 yards in his first two starts. There are likely quite a few worse QBs starting in the NFL right now.

Kolb is servicable, and suprised a few people with a couple of games that were better than anyone would have thought they'd be. Me, with the weapons this offense seems to have right now? I can't wait to see McNabb start in two weeks. No way in hell would anyone with half a brain call for Kolb  to start over McNabb. Kolb was decent, but he still doesn't have half the arm strength, experiance, or overall ability that McNabb has, at least when healthy.
Title: Re: Eagles/Chiefs Talk

Once again Reid in the 2nd half decides to pass the ball and continue to pass when they have a comfortable lead. Meanwhile the just as retarded Chiefs were running the ball all day even when down! The game was so half ass backwards. Kolb did well, but man oh man, the Chiefs are BAD. They might be the worst team in the NFL right now(right there with the Skins  ^-^) Kolb has proven to me so far that he can have a ok game against an okay defense in the Saints. He can do above average against a really bad defense in the Chiefs. Kolb has 2 starts and has proved NOTHING. If anything its good to see the guy with his head up and looking to have some confidence in him. We're going to need him playing his best at this point. Vick is far from contributing. We might not see anything special from him til the end of the season I am afraid.

DeSean Jackson - 3 games deep this kid is always in the endzone. i love him. no wildcat looks for him though this week. which I am fine with if he's alittle hurt, but the wildcat seems to work better when he's involved. i agree with jamaal jackson though on the celebration. we need him healthy.

McCoy - Looked down right nasty early. I was really hoping they'd give him the ball all day. Still 20 for 84 yrds and a TD ain't bad for his first start. Hell any Eagles RB near 100 yards is good. Great draft pick

Celek - This guy is Mr. Reliable and Mr. Hard-to-bring-Down! Yes, he awkward, and yes he's white. Yes he gave a horrible first down signal 2 yards shy of the 1st and yes his Eagles wing celebration after his TD was kinda whack, but those things don't matter to me. Like it or not he is turning into a star on this offense and if he keeps getting the ball thrown his way, might deserve a shot at the pro bowl(laugh). the kid makes catches and finds yards after the catch. i havn't been watching his blocking?

Gaither - Had a solid game. 7 tackles and a sack

Killa Cole - 6 tackles and a .5 sack

When they went for it on 4th and short, that was just a horrible call. 4 passes and out. Chiefs scored right after. Horrible. The other thing that drove me crazy all day, other than passing when way up was the Wildcat. Almost every time they brought Vick in, they handed the ball off. I think he attempted 2 passes out of 11 plays. Come on Reid, your not fooling anyone. Mix it the farg up or don't even put him out there! It was so predictable. You knew they were going to run the ball when in that formation. The formation is all about fooling you opponent. Another look into the mastermind that is Reid. Scary.

Good week to rest up. Looking forward to a beat down on the Bucs!

Quote
Eagles' defense was so good Chiefs stopped passing

By MARCUS HAYES
Philadelphia Daily News

hayesm@phillynews.com

AT ONE POINT, it got so bad the Chiefs just ran it.

Down by 17 points with 30 minutes to play to a team it showed no hint of being able to stop, the Chiefs chose to not pass the football. They kept the ball on the ground. This served a dual purpose.

One, it kept Matt Cassel, the team's top offseason acquisition, out of harm's way. Cassel was sacked three times and pounded about a dozen others by a voracious defense that led the Eagles to a 34-14 win.

Two, it...well, actually, there was only one logical explanation.

"If you're back there, dropping back every play, and our front four know it's a pass, it's lights out," said free safety Quintin Mikell. "You don't want to get your quarterback injured."

Carting Cassel off the field seemed inevitable if the Chiefs kept chucking it. This was nothing like the defense stung into passivity by the visiting Saints last week. That defense shouldered the blame for the 48-22 loss.

By halftime, this week's version of the Eagles' defense had those three sacks, had limited starting running back Larry Johnson to 3 yards on seven carries, had forced five punts, had allowed 75 total yards and had allowed zero third-down conversions in four such situations. (It would shut the Chiefs out on third down; 0-for-11.)

"It was good to see the defense come out and play exceptionally well," Eagles coach Andy Reid said. "They were flying around, and I thought the third-down defense was exceptional."

So, even facing eight or nine players at the line of scrimmage, the Chiefs ran, and ran, and ran in the second half.

Down by about three touchdowns most of the time.

They ran 20 times. For 71 yards.

Cassel passed it eight times, completing seven of them, for 40 yards.

New Chiefs coach Todd Haley didn't say he feared for Cassel's health, exactly.

"I think, to be the team we want to be, we are going to have to be able to run the ball even when they have too many up there," said Haley, who admitted Johnson's 3 yards of rushing offense in the first half helped spur his play-calling in the second half. "We are trying to establish an identity here."

And, perhaps, trying to convince Cassel not to change his, for safety's sake.

"Honestly, I was surprised a little bit," middle linebacker Omar Gaither said. "They ran the ball much more than I thought they would, with the score being what it was."

True, the Chiefs missed wideouts Dwayne Bowe and Quinten Lawrence but, when you need to score and when you can't stop them from scoring, you'd think, maybe...

"I don't know what the motive was behind that," said defensive end Darren Howard. "I know they were down two of their receivers, who didn't dress this week. We knew they were going to come in and run the ball, but to that extent? We were kind of taken by surprise. I've never seen that before. We were up by that much going into the second half and they don't try to throw the ball downfield?

"You want to pin your ears back and get to the quarterback. We thought, all the way until the end of the game, they would start passing the ball eventually."

They thought wrong.

Until the last two weeks I thought he was a complete bust and totally wasted pick.  He's had great protection which obvoiusly helps.  Don't know how far his upside goes but he sures looks like great quality replacement if DMac goes down IMO.  He does need more work and has to learn not to hang his receivers out to dry with some of his ball placement.

Interesting stuff from Jamaal.

I got worried when he did the splits at the end of his little somersault because I thought he'd end up pulling his groin again. At least he's waiting until he's inside the end zone to celebrate now.

Couple things for ya, mus...

1. Has Pimp proven himself to ya yet? I thought I remember you saying last year wasn't a good measuring stick.

2. Mr. Hard to bring down?! lol I imagined that being said in a soccer mom voice and it's funny.

3. Please don't use the term "kid"...

1. 3 games deep into the season. djack has impressed me much and seems to be making a name for himself as a top receiver, but its still early in the season. ill believe when he stays healthy all year and stays in the endzone every week. so far so good and thank gawd for him at this point.

2. He is! The guy is either dragging linebackers or carrying DB's for extra yards. Plus he took a hell of a hit yesterday, looked alittle shook up, but got up and stayed in for the next play.

3. Your right, Shawn Andrews is a kid. Celek is a man. I will never use that term again

Maclin was pretty quick to keep up with him too.

Oh, and speaking about Maclin...his instincts on PR and KR absolutely suck. That sonofabitch dances more than anyone I have ever seen returning punts.

Jury is still way out on Maclin. Have to resist the temptation to use DJack as the measuring stick. Maclin is still adjust to the speed of the game, and that's obvious. Shady is still in the same category to a degree.

DeSean is so much fun to watch because anytime he touches the ball he has a legitimate opportunity to take it to the house.  He doesn't look that fast running the ball in terms of his leg movement -- it looks somewhat effortless.  It reminds me a bit of Marshall Faulk when he ran -- it looked like he was gliding on the field and that he wasn't expending much in order to blow by everyone else.

Keep that man healthy.  This early bye week I thought would be problematic but with everyone banged up so early it came at the perfect time.

I love it too...although I found it funny that he went to the sidelines and puked.

Sounds like the author of that blurb tried to make it sound more ominous because I read this:

Quote"I try to talk to the young guys, to try to exhibit some professionalism," he said. "I know you want to have fun, you want to do your touchdown celebrations and whatnot, but there's a time and place - what was that, second quarter? He's a young guy. He'll learn. I was talking to him right after he did it. Interestingly enough, he was throwing up. I was like, 'That flip wasn't warranted . . . See, that's what you get!' The flip actually took more out of him than the 60-yard run."

Trying to keep it in perspective for him, but joking with him at the same time

i don't think jamaal was upset about his celebrations, its the fact that he was throwing up and doing a flying front roll into the endzone could possibly get himself injured. the team doesn't need that happening

Les Bowen: The bottom line: Who gives a flip how Jackson celebrates?
By Les Bowen
Philadelphia Daily News

Daily News Sports Columnist

I SAY, LET DeSean be DeSean.

As long as the Eagles' second-year wideout doesn't hurt himself, incur a crucial penalty, or inadvertently eject the ball before crossing the goal line, I don't care if he performs the balcony scene from "Romeo and Juliet" in the end zone.

I know center Jamaal Jackson was sincere when he went over to No. 10 and voiced his objections to the flip, slide and split after the 64-yard touchdown reception Sunday, but I just can't help but flash back 5 years, when Terrell Owens' post-TD "artistic statements" were just wonderful theater, as far as teammates and fans were concerned. Never saw Jamaal - or anyone else - tell T.O. to cool it. Of course, Jamaal spent the 2004 season on IR, but still.

Maybe the thinking in being concerned about this is that the celebrations are a step along the road to becoming as big a pain in the rear/distraction as T.O. If that really is the case, perhaps an intervention is warranted. (If not an outright exorcism.)

But Andy Reid, a pretty good barometer in such matters, did not seem concerned when asked about Sunday's display, either in his postgame presser or yesterday's day-after recap.

Reid, asked a question yesterday that practically begged him to praise Jamaal Jackson for upbraiding the young wideout, said only that he tells his players to "act like you've been there before." Then he allowed that if he were to say that to DeSean, the Eagles' emerging star might reply that he has indeed been there before - three times in three games.

"I don't mind a little personality," Reid concluded. "Adding a little spice to it doesn't hurt."

DeSean, by the way, said he was more careful with the flip-slide-into-split move than it must have seemed to those of us who might wind up in traction just thinking about trying it.

"It was like sliding into second base," he said last night on ESPN 950-AM's "DeSean Jackson Show." "I'm safe."

Jackson said Reid suggested he "go easy on the celebrations," but "it's really hard to take that out of my game."

I don't think anyone's concerned with DeSean turning into a T.O.-sized douche, rather I think everyone's concern is more about injuring himself and penalties.  The NFL seems more so now than ever to be cracking down on touchdown celebrations, and giving up 15 yards in field position on the kickoff in a tight game is a steep price to pay.

I would love the NFL to back off with its attempt to put a stranglehold on things that always make the highlight reels and what fans ultimately want to see, but until that sentiment changes he needs to figure out where the line is and at least make a conscious attempt in not crossing it.

the problem I had with pimp doing the flip was that he had a groin injury and took a shot to numb the pain before the game. he landed from the flip with his legs a little awkwardly stretched and he's lucky he didn't re-injure himself.  that's just plain dumb in that kind of situation.

all the more reason for him to stop diving into empty endzones.  otherwise, in true philly sports fashion, he'll tear his junk off and never play again.

i'd rather see him get a 15 yard penalty for excessive celebrations every time he scores than to ever see him dive in like that again.

327 yds passing, 3 total td (2 pass, 1 rush), 0 int, 71% comp is very much worth of potw regardless of who it is.

only 2 qb's in the nfc threw for more yardage (warner, campbell) and both lost.

that's pretty much what i've been saying since this years draft.  it became very apparent after taking maclin and mccoy in the first 2 rounds that reid is loading up on skill players so that when kolb is given the keys in 2 years, this is what he'll have around him:

pimp entering his 4th year
mccoy entering his 3rd year
maclin entering his 3rd year
celek entering his 5th year
avant entering his 6th year (if he doesn't sign elsewhere)

basically, all of the offensive skill players will be in their prime for kolb to throw and hand off to.

meanwhile, mcnabb gets small, johnson, thrash, pinkston, mitchell, etc, etc for his first 4 or 5 years.  farging hilarious.

So what are the odds of McNabb coming back from the rib injury and laying an egg against the ultra-zesty Tampa passing D? WIP's gotta be praying for that.

yep, the days of Torrance Small and Freddie Milons make me cry.  Kolb is better than i think i thought he was, but all of this is conjecture until he plays a stud d, which might not happen at all this year.  He did everything he could do to calm the masses, and did a great job. 391yds and 350yds, farging Pimp makes everyone look good

Yeah Jackson does make guys look good, but Kolb did put the ball where it needed to be.  Clearly it is too early to tell what kind of QB Kolb is.  How many times have we watched McNabb complete a pass to a guy that if it were in a better spot it goes for a big gain?

The thing is if this was a guy that everybody was excited about from the jump people would be creaming their farging pants about who well he performed in his first two NFL starts.

half the fanbase is praying for that....and honestly if he does bomb out against tampa the criticism wont be unwarranted

The only people hoping Donovan fargs up are iceholes who aren't real fans to begin with.

Suggesting that number equates to "half" is par for the course hyperbolic silliness, dude.

im talking about the people who will be giddy IF it happens....not people who are hoping it happens...theres a huge difference

id put the number of people hoping it happens at 3% of the fanbase....and the number that will be happy when it happens at about 50%

hyperbole is quite a popular word these days.  it gets used atleast a million times a day on this board alone.

If Donovan dying in a fire guaranteed an Eagles Super Bowl Win, I'd gladly douse him with jet fuel and toss a lit flare in his general direction.

i'd love see someone laying in one of those things, turn the mic on, put a britney spears cd on loop and set it next to the speakers and just walk away.

I'd put that number at 6.7, and the number that will be happy when it happens around 38.6, and the number of people who would rather not even think about it at prolly around 45.4. Those numbers are based upon a study of the Eagle fan masses by a hungover smelvinator committee of one.
