Title: Eagles/Panthers talk
Post by: The BIGSTUD on September 07, 2009, 06:28:49 PM
Not the GDT, just chat about the upcoming game. Predictions, expectations?

I have a very wait and see approach with the Eagles this year. So many questions, and rather than answering the unknown, I think it is best to let it play out and see.

The Eagles run defense is a little worrisome, but Carolina's should be too. Beason is banged up, they lost Kemoeatu to injury and they may have another injury or too as well. Can't remember. The Eagles should be able to establish the run on them with a real FB if Andy decides to actually run the ball. Plus, I'm more confident in the offensive line run blocking with limited reps as opposed to pass blocking.

Establish the run, go play action to Jackson, and work the middle of the field with Celek. Hope for the best with the run defense and don't let Smith get behind you on defense. They don't have much of a TE and Delhomme sucks. Their only 2 real weapons are Williams and Smith.

Love this defense.

What's to love?

Two premiere defensive tackles, a stud pass rusher in Cole, the best secondary in the NFL. Mediocre linebackers, but good enough to win football games. This defense isn't all that different from last year and wehad one of the best defenses in the NFL last year. So what changes all of a sudden?

and it will still be good enough to be a top 5 defense in the NFL like it was last year.

I have no feel for this game at all.

I'll go with 17-3.

It's probably Carolina that gets the 17.

Jake Delhomme is their starting qb....

31-17 Eagles.

I feel the Eagles will have no problem scoring 20-30 or more pts. a game, but the D is questionable at this point. If the Eagles fall behind early it could be a very long game.

32-28 Eagles.

I haven't really paid too much attention to it with the Phils being on, but the preseason went pretty fast for me. I was hoping they had some more time to demonstrate they had gotten it together. I think they will look like hot garbage, and the Panthers are going to run the ball down their throats, while the offense looks completely out of sync.

Panthers 24 - Bird 13

We are all rightly concerned that the Eagles may be mediocre this year, but let's not overlook the fact that the Panthers will likely be at least as mediocre as the Eagles. Their camp and preseason have been downright horrible, and I'm not talking about losing meaningless games. I'm talking about showing no flashes of talent whatsoever for the last month. I think last year was flukey for them, and I think their fanbase is feeling the discomfort. They have star players but they have a shtein QB and a lot of times over the years this team has been unable to put the puzzle pieces together correctly. 24-17 Eagles... a Panthers loss more than an Eagles win.

Too early for a prediction, but I don't have a good feeling.

1. What's going to happen with the OL; are Andrews and Andrews playing? Even if they are, what is the chemistry going to look like? How many sacks will Julius Peppers beat Peters for?

2. They have to force noodle arm to beat them. If Williams gets on track and runs on them, its going to be a long day.

3. Is the offense going to be in sync and have rhythm?

The only thing we can hope for is that they come out with the offense clicking. If they lose this game, they are staring 0-2 right in the face with NO next week.

Map (http://the506.com/nflmaps/2009/01-FOX-E.html)

Dick Stockton and Charles Davis....FOX's "C" team

I predict a loss because Andy sucks in week 1s, his team looked like a mess in the preseason and is still tinkering with the starting lineup less than 6 days before the game, and Carolina has a great running game....

I'm not feeling a win sunday. I think the offense has looked flat and will struggle as usual with the pass first offense which is going to put me into pre-cardiac arrest all game long. defense however, overcomes and asante picks 6's delhomo for the game winning TD.

Birds - 20

Panthers' offensive line works well together

By Paul Domowitch
Philadelphia Daily News

Daily News Sports Columnist

WHEN THE EAGLES open the 2009 season in Charlotte on Sunday, a unit that was considered one of their greatest strengths going into training camp 5 weeks ago will be one of their biggest question marks.

No one - including coach Andy Reid - really knows what to expect from a renovated offensive line that didn't take a single preseason snap together.

Left guard Todd Herremans still is recovering from surgery to repair a stress fracture in a foot and could be out until next month. New right tackle Shawn Andrews missed all of training camp and the preseason with a cranky back. His brother, Stacy, the team's new starting right guard, played in just one preseason game after having January ACL surgery. New left tackle Jason Peters missed time with a quad injury.

"I'm not going to say it's going to take a lot of time [for them to get on the same page], but it will take time," Reid said in June when discussing his new and supposedly improved o-line. "Those five guys have to be dancing the same dance."

Right now, Shawn Andrews is doing the merengue, Stacy is doing the tango, Peters is doing the fox trot, center Jamaal Jackson is doing the cha-cha and Herremans' replacement, Nick Cole, is doing the rumba.

Meanwhile, down in Charlotte, the Carolina Panthers will be trotting out a battle-tested offensive line who know each other better than an old married couple. They not only dance the same dance, they finish each other's sentences, complete each other's thoughts and, oh, yeah, play together better than the New York Philharmonic.

"Half of being a good offensive line is knowing each other and knowing how each other plays," said the Panthers' Pro Bowl left tackle, Jordan Gross. "We got that out of the way last year. There's really no excuse for us not to be a good unit, and hopefully, build off what we did last year."

What Gross and his linemates - left guard Travelle Wharton, center Ryan Kalil, right guard Keydrick Vincent and right tackle Jeff Otah - did last year was play as well as any offensive line in the NFL.

They helped Carolina, which won the NFC South with a 12-4 record, set franchise records for rushing yards (2,437) and fewest sacks allowed (20). The Panthers' pound-the-ball-down-your-throat offense - their 504 rushing attempts were the third most in the NFC behind only Atlanta (560) and Minnesota (519) - finished third in the league in rushing, seventh in scoring and 10th in total offense.

The Panthers' two running backs, DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart, combined for 2,351 rushing yards in '08, the most by an NFL ballcarrying tandem in nearly a quarter century. In the Panthers' final eight games, Williams and Stewart combined for eight 100-yard rushing performances.

With all five offensive line starters back to pave the way for Williams and Stewart and provide security for quarterback Jake Delhomme, the Panthers are looking for even bigger and better things from their offense this season.

"I think we're much farther along than we were a year ago," said Gross, who is playing on the same side in consecutive seasons for the first time in his career. "The key for us is getting our depth developed. We've got a lot of young [backup] players. Unproven guys that need to step up and show what they can do. But as far as our starting five, we've got the potential to be a really good unit."

The Panthers had excellent depth up front last year and it came in handy. Otah, the rookie drafted in the first round with the pick they got from the Eagles, missed four games in October and November. But ex-Eagle Jeremy Bridges stepped in and played well.

Another veteran, Frank Omiyale, filled in for Gross for a game when he got hurt. And Geoff Hangartner started two early season games for Wharton at left guard, four at center for Kalil and two more at right guard for Vincent. The unit never missed a beat.

But Bridges, Omiyale and Hangartner all signed with other teams in the offseason, leaving the Panthers with precious little experience behind their starters. On Sunday, their top three backups will be center/guard Mackenzy Bernadeau, rookie guard Duke Robinson and tackle Geoff Schwartz, none of whom have taken an NFL regular-season snap.

"I think we've got quality [backups]," Gross said. "They just don't have a lot of experience."

The Panthers have assembled a line that is suited for the smashmouth style of offense they play. The difference in philosophy between the Panthers and the pass-happy Eagles was evident in last year's draft when the Birds, who needed an offensive tackle, traded away their first-round pick to the Panthers rather than take Otah, who was considered a better run blocker than pass blocker at Pitt.

"The style of offense we run - a power running game - they picked the right pieces of the puzzle," the 6-5, 325-pound Vincent said. "We are what we are. We were built to be a power-run, smashmouth football team. That's something we take pride in and just have to go out there and do it.

"What we do on offense is what I'm built for. I'm a run blocker. I can pass block a little bit, but we're going to outphysical you. That's what I'm made for. I'm not a finesse guy."

After drafting Otah last year, the Panthers moved Gross from right tackle to left tackle and slid Wharton inside to left guard from left tackle. Wharton's move inside was one of the keys to their rushing success last season. His power and mobility helped spring Stewart and Williams on many of their cutback runs.

The Panthers averaged 31.5 rush attempts per game last year and just 25.9 pass attempts. Delhomme isn't a carry-the-load quarterback. In 32 starts over the last 3 years, he's thrown 30-plus passes in a game just 13 times. Carolina's record in those 13 games: 4-9.

"In this offense, we're able to attack all the time and not sit back and react all the time," Otah said. "You can hit somebody instead of waiting for them to hit you. I like run blocking. I like pass blocking, too. But you can be more aggressive in run blocking."

God damn would I have loved for Otah to be an Eagle. A lot of people seem to sleeping on the fact that the Panthers run the ball as well as anyone, and the Eagles defense looks suspect at best at this point. I think the Eagles are going to get pushed around all day.

What I would love is for the Eagles to have a coach who believed in running the ball. After that you can argue about how best to throw away first round picks.

even with his off year last year theres no question id rather have peters than otah right now....regardless if otah was quoted as saying he likes to run block better than pass block...not sure why that makes you a great tackle

now jordan gross who is the real stud of that line and plays the same position as peters is a much better comparison

The entire Panthers line allowed 20 sacks last season.
Peters allowed 12 or some shtein.

It's pretty reasonable to ask if he's even better than Tra Thomas at this point.

and no disrespect to the carolina o line....but they didnt give up sacks because they run the ball more than almost any team in the nfl...were ahead in most games last year and have a qb who doesnt hold onto the rock

Kyle Orton

Possibly Romo. Romo will put up better numbers, but Delhomme has been good in the playoffs(aside from last year). Romo chokes.

Jason Campbell and Garrard and headed in that direction too, but aren't there yet. I used to think Garrard was good, but every time I look at his stats he is always 12/26 170 yards,  1 TD  2 INTs.

The amazing thing was after Delhomme's brutal season, especially the 5-pick playoff, he got that crazy ass contract. He is terrible.

Which will make it even more infuriating to see him carve up the Eagles on Sunday.

Although it appears the Panthers have kick and punt return issues, so perhaps they will suffer the same week one fate as the Eagles did a few years ago.

Wonder if Andy can pass along Reno Mahe's number to them.
Title: Re: Eagles/Panthers talk

The only shot he has of carving up the Eagles is if they run the ball all over us and they have put more in the box and they get play action with Smitty. Other than that, Delhomme doesn't have a lot of passing weapons. The Eagles have questions at LB, but are loaded at DB. Say what you want about Macho, but even if he sucks you can cover up a mediocre safety if your corners and other safety all play well.

Less the ball is in the hands of delhomme, better they have at winning. thats why they are a run first team. delhomme can do a decent job at QB when they run an offense like that. if they establish the run then we might be in for a long day of playing catch up and pass, pass, pass. we all know how that usually turns out.

It amazes me that there are, what ,112 D-1 college teams in the league graduating starting QB's at a minimum every 4 years and more like every 2, and there is only about 15 quality NFL QB's. That is a pretty amazing failure rate from college to the NFL.

the determining factor in this game is how much time does the line give mcnabb because if they hook him up the eagles can outscore carolina even WHEN the panthers are running the ball well

half the d-1 qb's are wr's or rb's playing qb....its the hardest position in professional sports...plus when you consider every d-1 college team has at least two rb's and three wr's i think the ratio of quality wr's and rb's in the nfl is less at those positions

actually right now we are in a golden age for qb's...you have  HOF veterans like warner - brady - manning - farve and a sick young(ish) class of qb's.....ryan - flacco - cutler - rivers - brees - rodgers

http://www.carolinahuddle.com/forum/carolina-panthers/19094-panther-fan-ejected-cheering.html

QuoteBut at Thursday night's preseason game against the Pittsburg Steelers he says, "This little feller in a red shirt said I needed to sit down, and I said, 'I've been doing this for 14 years. You got to be kidding.' Next thing I know there was a posse of cops, a deputy sheriff and Charlotte police escorted me to security."

Nejberger says Panthers security never gave him a reason for booting him from the stands. He says they just told him, "You have to go or we're going to have to put you in jail."

feller? Is Larry The Cable Guy a Panthers fan?

QuoteAnd this is why we are the laughing stock of NFL fanbases.

Our stadium is filled with snobby douchebags and yuppie flags who think football and golf are the same sport.

"Ohh look Miranda, they converted a third down attempt, I do believe a gentle clap is in order. WELL DONE GENTLEMEN, TALLY HO!."

24-17 Eagles

Asante gets it done with the Smith match-up. He has a harder time with guys like Plaxico, not small burners. McDermott will be ready this is his debut. If he can get lucky on a few run-blitzes w/o compromising the coverage to Smith's side they will do fine.

Offense needs to convert early and McNeesy needs to limit the wurm-burners...

Jackson can smoke prob any CB in the league, but doing it on every play is near impossible. Asante and him were having a great battle all TC.

I come back from going out for a bit and see Kolb in at QB, remember than Reid never pulls McNabb unless they are up 70-0, have an "aw stein!" moment. Apparently not as bad as I thought at least.

For those complaining about the feeds, I'm watching live on Fox due to living in Carolina country, (the only Panther game I'll watch all year, LOL) and they are having problems with it also.

Agreed - it looks like the defenders could get a pass on the momentum part, but the knee to the exposed back was gratuitous and could have been avoided.

For that, the pantywaists in the league office should bestow fines as indicated. Especially in light of all the league QB protection rules-enforcement blather during the pre-season designed mainly to save Farve's sack.

QuoteI have two Adrian Peterson thoughts. First, he combines my favorite single qualities of five different great running backs: Walter Payton (the move where he breaks a tackle, then stiff-arms a tackler coming from behind to buy a second while getting his legs churning again); Barry Sanders (the part where he's so electric that it's just not worth betting heavily against his team because he can singlehandedly break you); Eric Dickerson (the way he cruises through a hole and you wait for him to kick it into another gear for a split second before realizing he's running away from everyone already); Emmitt Smith (a nasty edge that can only be described as "Look, there's no way we're losing this game and that's that"); and O.J. QuoteFlozell, Sensabaugh fines push total for the week to $280,000
Posted by Tom Curran on September 18, 2009 11:03 PM ET

A pair of Cowboys found themselves $5,000 lighter in the wallet today.

According to Charean Williams of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the NFL determined that Dallas left tackle Flozell Adams  "unnecessarily struck his opponent in the head area" while blocking on an end-around.

Meanwhile, safety Gerald Sensabaugh got docked for a horse-collar tackle on Tampa running back Carnell Williams.

The NFL doesn't give a full accounting of all fines assessed to players in a given week, only those about which the league is specifically asked.  Still, between game-action fines we've seen reported and the fines handed down to Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and Texans corner Dunta Robinson, there have been $155,000 in fines imposed.  (Robinson's $25,000 fine was levied by Houston.)

Tack on the $125,000 fine Lorenzo Loose Lips cost the Jets and their 2008 braintrust, and that's a cool $280,000 in fines levied by the NFL or its clubs.

That we know about.
