Anyone here done this? I know a few who have (including my sister) who have done it, never been a runner before...and are now avid runners.
If you've done it, how was it for you?
I just started and will be doing day 3 tomorrow.
Funny you brought this up - I've been doing the same thinking. My fat ass will probably die before I complete a 5K, but I'm going to give it a shot.
My son (11) wants to run in the July 4th 5K. I asked him if he wanted me to run with him? He asked - "You think you can keep up?" Of course the answer is no, but the little bastich challenged me.
They have 2 versions of it. One is a 9 week program and then there is a longer one if you're overweight (not saying you are, but if you are, it helps to know)
why you gotta call him fat?
i'll say it. demon's a fat sumbitch.
but he wears it well.

He called himself fat. I was offering support. :paranoid
fat people don't need support, they need self respect and you can't offer that
What is 5K? 3 miles or so? Do you need 9 weeks to be able to run 3 miles? Jesus christ.
I could run it tonight and smoke while doing it...even without a cop chasing me.
Unless you are enormously-overweight/injured/crippled/dead it shouldn't take your body more than a couple of weeks of running every day to be able to simply keep your legs moving for 3 miles. I'm not talking about 'racing' mind you, but your body doesn't need two months of running every day to get acclimated to the act of moving your legs for 3 miles.
It's science and I'm a doctor.

That's all I have ever asked for.
My shin splints are going on 3 years and I can't get rid of them. I can't run because of this but I can take the pain enough to play basketball twice a week.
i always figured you'd have chronic knee problems more than anything else.

If you ran more, the shin splints would probably go away entirely.
Seriously?
I thought limiting activity would help. So, run through the pain? It has gotten better with rest....but it comes back.
if you're having some "chronic" shin splint issues, then you should probably go get it checked out by a doc because i'm willing to bet that it's more than just shin splints. it could be a simple fix like inserts for your shoes. or, it could be an accute case of swine-aids.
swine aids, lol
You still run?
Only when chased
hbionic....get your feet fitted for orthotics. My dad is a podiatrist and I've been wearing them for years. It should help with chronic shin splints.

Yeah, this is what I'm talking about. I'm not going to win a race, but I think I can get my body to keep moving after 5 weeks of getting ready. And that's the goal.
And yes, I do wear it well. Very well.
A few years ago, I hiked down the Grand Canyon, spent the night, then hiked back out in the morning. To prepare for this, a few weeks prior I started running. Being a pack-a-day smoker, I couldn't run two blocks the first day. By the end of week three, I was running 3 miles everyday. By running, I mean jogging.
T-Hawk, has anyone ever told you that you look better with a mask on? Because if not, I just did.
hahaha - I'm sure I've heard it before, but definetly not as sexily as you said it
so I'm bumping this because I restarted the program after quitting in week 3 last year due to severe knee pain.
Turns out it was runner's knee and this time around, I got the hookup from my orthopedic surgeon. Anti-inflammatory gel for the knees, these awesome HUGE icepacks that wrap around them after running and these bands that go around the bottom of my knee to support the tendons.
Just did week 3 day 1 tonight and it went well. Hot as a mother farger, but it went well regardless.
Planning on running my first 5k on 9/26. :yay
just to update this...I'm done week 5 and onto week 6 and was able to run for 20 minutes straight, a little under 10 minutes a mile last night. Unreal. I struggled running all of the 60 second intervals in week 1.
Also just signed up for my first 5K in Sept. ;D
If you can do 2 sub 10 minute miles now, you won't need the rest of that training program to run a 5 k 2.5 months from now.
If it will help improve my speed, I want to finish it out. Its 4 more weeks and I am enjoying it. :)
I used to run 7 minute miles in HS, but it was always the most boring thing I would do in the exercise spectrum. Biking was and still is my preference, but best of luck on th 26th PG..

This stuff works great for knee problems.
Thanks Yeti, knee problems are solved though. Took one visit to my orthopedic surgeon...got these strap things that go around my knees when I run, GIGANTIC ice packs to wrap around my knees after I run and Voltaren gel to use on it (anti inflammatory gel). No pain since. :)

I'm down to 9.5 minute miles now...running 25 minutes straight. I seriously was dying after the last 60 second run interval in week 1. I love this program. I actually CRAVE running now. Its not boring for me though. Its listening to my (not kids) music and being alone (no kids) for 30 minutes after a long day of work and kids. I farging am in love with running haha
Running is a fantastic way to stay in shape until you turn 40. Then it is absolute sheer farging misery. I miss it especially considering I've gained about 35 pounds since I stopped due to other health ailments.
What happens at 40? Joints can't handle it?
I'd like to smoke a joint and drink a 40. Instead, I'm watching this baby scoot around the floor from power cord to power cord, like its some kind of farging game for me to keep him from killing himself.
It is a game. And no matter what happens, you lose.
But the longer you play, the more chances you have to embarrass and humiliate him in front of other people.

2 weeks left on this and after I finish, I move on to what's called Bridge to 10k:
Bridge to 10K
W1 - run 10 min, walk 1 min, repeat 4 times
W2 - run 15 min, walk 1 min, repeat 3 times
W3 - run 17 min, walk 1 min, repeat 3 times
W4 - run 18 min, walk 1 min, repeat 3 times
W5 - day 1 - run 22 min, walk 1, repeat 2 times.
W5 - day 2 - run 25 min, walk 1, repeat 2 times
W5 - day 3 - run 30 min, walk 1, repeat 2 times
W6 - run 60 min
All with a 5 min warmup/cooldown
:yay
Is that every day or do you skip training days?
I am pretty sure its supposed to be 3 days a week. So is C25K but I do it now every other day.

I used to run for years until a couple surgeries recently that make running a lot more of a grind than it used to be.
The best feeling is that when you start out running long distances and you get winded, then a month or so later you see significant differences in your stamina. It's always nice when you do any type of workout and see significant improvements in an area rather than the usual slow improvements.
Eventually you get to the point where you feel like you can run forever without getting tired. I ran to stay in shape for sports though, so eventually I started sticking with sprints. Running gives you such an energy boost for the rest of your day.
Unless the surgeries removed your feet you can still run.

We already know that. But it's not a lack of speed or effort that will keep you out of the winner's circle. It's just that no matter how fast you run, you'll never be able to reach up and break the tape as you cross the finish line, thus never officially winning. You can however, come in at a very close 2nd.

I ran that last year, and other than having to actually go into jersey, and fact that it's half uphill, and the insane pounding you take on the constant downhill, it's an "ok" race.
Or maybe it's excruciating and i wouldn't ever recommend that race to anyone who has any knee issues.

It is. Even my g/f did it earlier this year with absolutely no training for it. She sucked wind and had an awful final time but she still had fun.
I think it fell into the category of, "I don't want to do it until I know I wont' drop dead from physical activity". I was mid-C25k training at that point I think, hadn't even gotten to the Bridge? I can't remember.

With that being said, what motivated you to start running? I lift weights and do cardio to stay fit and to try to look decent. But I never understood the motivation behind running long distances. Is it the simple case of conquering a challenge?

I stopped smoking about 4 years back or so, and i started running to avoid any weight gain.
I hate the gym, i hate lifting weights. I love running outside. I can go at 4am or 10pm, doesn't matter. It's the only kind of workout i can fit into a schedule. I probably run 20-30 miles a week. I don't really keep track anymore. Running competitively makes it fun.
i guess that's what it's about, finding something you like and will "stick to" as a workout program. i like running but can't do it unless i am on grass. if i run on a hard surface or treadmill my shins feel like the are on fire in no time.
Must suck to have so many chins.

Running is simply not even an option for me right now. So many medical issues going on with damn near every joint in my body. I've always loved going on formation runs with my platoon or company but just couldn't get into running distance by myself. I did it anyway because I needed to stay in shape, and like rjs, it was good conditioning for all of the other sports I liked playing.

I started the C25K initially because I needed something that was a good workout and wouldn't take long. Like I could go run 3 miles, burn a ton of calories...all in a half hour and be done with it. Going to the gym to work out is a long chore for me. Drive to the gym, do some warm up cardio, do weights, do abs and end with a long cardio session. Too much time and I don't have that kind of time.
Like today, I ran 3 miles. Took me no time at all to get done.
But then I got addicted. I wanted to run more. So I started the Bridge to 10k program. That took more time, but still no longer than an hour. :)
That makes sense, in a perfect world I'd have a gym in my basement. I'd rather get fat then run though.
This is the half marathon training I'm doing:
http://www.halhigdon.com/halfmarathon/novice.htm
I will be adding 2 weeks in there at the end with long runs of 11 and 12 miles because I don't want to make that jump from 10-13 and I have the extra time. Its funny, because I looked at this workout and the first few weeks seem so EASY. I've been running a lot more than that a week (every other day).
But I did day 4 today and running 3 days in a row? MUCH harder LOL. Going to do weights tonight and then finally have a rest day tomorrow.
Haha. If anyone here gets Philly Magazine, they did their annual "Get Fit Philly" issue this month. Guess who was the picture for running category? farging hilarious. It's the professional pic from the bridge run in November. There were over 5000 runners and most had pics taken. So funny that they used mine.

I like how the people in back look taller even though they are 25 feet behind you. Totally messing with my depth perception.
If the addiction keeps up, how much longer before you're a cover girl for Runner's World?
Lol they look taller because of the fact we are on the downslope of the bridge.
And because they're all taller.
I hope to create a cult of people who are as obsessed with the shake weight as runners are with running.
Time for a quick workout.

I still have about 30 more pounds to lose to be able to even think of competing in something like that.
I've kinda hit a plateau lately (got sick, had to have a wisdom tooth out, etc.) so I've only been back to serious training since Monday (and then got hammered on Thursday which made me sick again, lol). I hurt like a whipped pig today but I still did five-plus miles, the last two of which were on the beach in sugar sand.
There's a 5K easter run in a few weeks and my plan was to run in that but I'm just not fit enough yet.

Don't take recommendations on best shoe. Find a dedicated running store in your area (not a Sports Authority or sporting goods store like Foot Locker...an actual Running store...if you need help finding one, lmk. I have a good site to find them by zip). You need to get a proper fit for your foot/gait.
Example, I took recommendations and bought an expensive pair of running shoes that were considered one of "the best". Turns out, they were great shoes, just the worst possible shoe for MY feet. The knee/shin/ankle pain was awful from running in them and I quit trying after 2-3 weeks. This time around, the shoes I was fit for ended up being like $50 or so cheaper but they are awesome (Mizuno Wave Rider) for my feet. No ankle or knee pain.
i'm partial to saucony's, everything else sucks.
Maybe I'll just buy some Brooks Ghosts and 2 pairs of Sauconys and return the 2 I like the least.
PG's method sounds hard. I don't even have a gait yet because I'm not a runner.

ALl you do is walk for the person at the store. And bring in a current pair of sneakers so they can see your wear. Its not hard. Hard is having to try out shoes, getting awful knee pain and not being able to walk/run wihtout pain for weeks.
That's not hard. I do that every time without even trying.
Yeah, I honestly don't remember the last time I was able to walk or run without any type of noticable pain. Maybe 2004?

The missus wants us to do a 5k in September and a half marathon in February. Now I need to know how to get started and avoid killing my knees and my feet... Maybe suggestions for the best running shoes would be a start. Then some sort of training regimen. Then the easiest way to off myself because I'm actually considering this.
I don't know anything about running shoes, but taking the easiest way out is for hoydas. A 1.75 liter bottle of Jack and drowning in your own vomit is a respectable way to go.
Can it be Crown Royal?
It's your death, not a coronation. No.
I use New Balance 991's. Best running shoes I've ever used. I also have a pair of the Asics Gel Kayano's but I only wear them if I'm doing extremely light training on the beach. They don't have enough support for pavement or bridge training.
Registered for the Philly Marathon this morning.
I may need to seek professional help......
Here's the problem I have with marathons and half marathons and even itty bitty 5k's......people pay really good $ to run in them. Guessing it cost close to $100 for registration. For what? A t-shirt and some gatorade at the finish line? Farg that. Running is dumb enough as it is and I hate doing it so I'll be damned if I actually pay to run around town for 5 hours.
Although, I did pay for the warrior dash last year, but it was only like $35 and I got a viking helmet, free beer and a pretty cool party afterwards. 3 miles of crazy obstacles in like 30 minutes followed up with 3 hours of crazy drinking.
Almost every run I've done so far, money is donated from the registration fee. The Run the Bridge funds The Larc School. One of the 5ks I did goes to the Fox Chase Cancer Center and so on. None of the 5ks are over 25.00 so far. I've gotten pretty nice shirts or hooded sweatshirts. Run the Bridge you got a long sleeve shirt and medal along with all of the food you can eat afterward....water bottles, bagels, oranges, bags of snacks, bananas, etc.
I also have done a $5.00 5k locally that runs every Sunday at 1pm. That money is just to fund the running club meetings (where food/drink is made available...along with fun prizes for placing in age groups).
So what am I supposed to do to start this couch to 5k? Just run as far as I can every day until I'm running 5k? I'm confused.

http://c25k.com/
that site has all of the links you'll need. Don't download any programs that you have to pay for, its a rip off and the chart is there with the instructions. You can download podcasts with the voice prompts when to walk and run or if you have an iPhone, you can get the app for it that will do the same thing with your music playing in the background.

Pretty much. But you literally have to be sitting on your couch, then get up, then run 5k.
Literally.
Running shoes are for Hoydas; if you kick enough ass on the regular, your feet are calloused enough to run barefooted
I like your Avatar, PG. Where did it come from?

oh shtein!
Moises Alou pissed on his hands to get a better grip on the bat. Maybe runners think that hersey squirts make them run faster. PG, I defer to you on this matter. Ever go poo-poo in your pants mid race to try and gain a competetive advantage?
The dirty no so little secret of running a marathon.
I've seen it happen right in front of me. It's never happened to me, i practically starve myself leading up to long runs so that doesn't happen. I have peed myself. From the people I have known that that has happened to there's no warning, and you don't even know it happens until it's too late.
cmon...you have a piece of shtein squirting from your ass and running down your leg and you cant tell its happening?
that chick would rather come in 566th place and be humiliated than make a u-turn to the port-a-potty? logic gone.
It's more like a water balloon popping than a squirt.. and after running 20 miles you're muscles weaken and become numb from everything else burning. It happens.. a lot.

Although this woman finished high enough in gender to qualify for some sponsorships in her future (20th woman)... so the 2 mins it took to use a toilet could have actually costed her money.
ha..Ill be damned if Im going to ruin a good pair of nike air max for 2.5 inch die cast medal and my shtein pic on ebaums world.
Yeah, there's really no coming back from that. You poop yourself during athletic competition and you pretty much remove yourself from the consensual sex population.
I don't race to win, I'm pretty much running to finish and beat my own PR.
I don't have the need to crap/pee myself. I can make a stop at a port o potty.
Though, I passed by one on the 10 miler I did last month and the smell alone make me almost vomit. Not sure what would be worse, that smell or peeing myself. :'(

i love the horrified looks on all the spectators faces
What the hell is wrong with these people?
I mean, come on. Have some goddamn dignity and don't shtein yourself while running a race. Especially when you've got shorts on and know it will run down your leg.
I'm very competitive but I draw the line at crapping myself to finish a farging race.

the horrified look on the runners face is even more priceless. if he was smiling I would have more respect for him.
How the farg did it end up on the front of his legs like that? Did he shtein through his dick?
I'm guessing it collects in the bottom of the shorts, and the running motion sends it sloshing in every direction.
I'm not a distance runner, but have a bunch of friends who are. They've never shat (at least that they'll admit to me), but they usually come back from marathons with stories about other people shteinting.
It's not just running. Greg Lemond shtein his pants one year when he won the Tour de France.
Drinking, giving birth...all kinds of things make people shtein themselves.
This is an excellent subject for further discussion.
Couch to Taco Bell.
This just means they were literally going all-out.
Seriously, this is the first I've ever heard of this. I actually wouldn't give a shtein.
He who wears running trousers, laughs last?
I think it is pretty awesome these people shtein themselves.
Broad Street Run this Sunday. Who's in?
Does it go thru North Philly because there's nothing I'd rather do than run by Broad & Chew wearing 200 dollar sneakers.
Its 30K people...and who the hell pays $200 for running shoes?
People who don't run.

I've been a mess all month. Since the Ocean Drive race. I got a cold that Monday morning, which was in my chest by Thursday....and it stayed there for 3.5 weeks. I think I've run a total of 10 times all month, nothing more than 5 miles. I'm not sure how this is going to go lol

My longest has been 6, that was saturday... and then I was in bed sunday, monday, and half of tuesday...
I originally predicted a time of 80 minutes, so i am actually starting in the 3rd coral i think, but i realistically don't think it will be anywhere near that. I'll consider it an accomplishment to not have my picture hotlinked to this thread on monday.
I'm rooting hard for one of you to shtein yourselves. Preferably during the race, but really any time would be acceptable.
I wouldn't shtein myself. I already said I'd stop. I'm not in these to actually WIN. Finishing and getting PRs is all I look for.
I'm in the gray corral, charlie....expected time of 1:30-1:40.

I saw a wrestler in high school do that about 25 years ago. He used laxatives to make weight, then gorged after weigh-ins. It started out as a small brown dot on his trunks, that eventually grew to cover his whole ass, then seeped out.
He could save a busload of of kids from a fire, but will forever be known as the guy that shtein his pants wrestling.

That article is fantastically written. The descriptive metaphors had me laughing several times.
Apparently Sizzler is so terrible, just looking at one makes your colon explode.
It's no Golden Corral, I'll tell you that much.
Ha... I used to love going to Sizzler when I was a kid. They had one in Northfield by the Shore Mall and as much as I hated going anywhere near that place I would always go just to eat at Sizzler.
Hearing Sizzler always reminds me of this scene in White Men Can't Jump:

Finished at 87 minutes. Which isn't my best, but far better than I thought I would considering I hadn't run over 4 miles in over 2 weeks. All in all the broad street run was kinda easy for a 10 miler. How' was the entire city built downhill?
There were a group of kenyans that probably beat the subway back down to the sports complex.
If you didn't shtein yourself, no one really cares.
I had my worst race since starting running. Lost 3 full minutes from my Ocean Drive 10 miler a month ago. Taking a month (mostly) off from bronchitis hurt bad. Worse than I imagined. But I finished.

that's a marathon to us normal sized folk
heh, about now, it's feeling like it to me too. I'm still not recovered and back to my normal self since that month-long bronchitis kicked my ass all of April.
Ran 7.5 miles last weekend (doing that again today) and while I felt great during it and could have gone longer, it knocked me on my ass for the remainder of the day. :-\
so right after taht last post, I got pain in my leg and it turned out to be about 1 mile away from a stress fracture. Put me out for 6 weeks and then it was very slow rehab back. Today I ran 12 miles...but I'm only allowed to do it in intervals. 4 mins run/1 min walk. I can run 4 miles without stopping but long runs...I'm still not ready.
I will be running the Philly Rock and Roll Half next weekend, doing it this way.
10 weeks until the Philly Marathon.
Damn PG, I feel like a lazy bag of lard when I read your posts.
I was thinking of starting to do some running on this trail...its not dirty, its paved, but its hilly, sideways, up, and down....what kind of sneakers do you recommend buying?
Remember, I had or still have shin splints from basketball about 5 years ago...most likely due to a long pause in playing consistently and wearing the wrong shoe.
Do you run with arch support?

Just a basic running shoe is all you need. No one can really recommend a sneaker though, everyone has preferences and says that their choice is the "absolute best, i wouldn't run with any other shoe." I love the Saucony Progrid series... my wife swears by Asics... go to an actually running store (not a sports authority or dicks sporting goods) and have them measure your feet and give you a recommendation based on your stride. That doesn't mean you're going to spend a fortune. My favorite shoe (Saucony Progrid Kinvara's) run about $70.
Go to a running store and get the right fit for your foot. Everyone is different. They actually will have you run on a treadmill, run outside and watch your feet/legs when you walk. Also bring your old regular sneakers so they can see the tread and how your feet work. Make sure it is (like charlie said) not a sporting goods store, but a specialty running store.
I started off in $175 Nike shoes thinking they were the best, but I had massive knee pain 2 weeks in. Turns out, while those shoes are actually amazing, they were the worst possible shoe for MY foot. I wear Mizunos now and they're $99. lol
PS...I feel like I got hit by a Mack truck now.
My Nike Structures were on clearance for $50 at the local running store, and they are phenomenal. This reminds me I need to run tomorrow.
Half marathon tomorrow.
Odds on me sleeping longer than 2 hours tonight? lol
Good luck PG. Make CF proud. :yay
What, we can't be supportive around here?
Race was a blast. Followed my doctor's orders of the intervals, so instead of the predicted finish of 2:10 (pre-injury when I signed up), I finished at 2:25. Exactly where I should have been adding in all of those walking intervals.

was expecting to run about a 2:05. But the weather was absolulely perfect the whole time (the last 2 years it's warmed up considerable at about 9:00/9:15 or so) so i was able to keep a brisker pace than i realized. i wasn't sure of my time since i started in corral 5 (i predicted a 1:40 minute finish to start in corral 4 or 5 and not have to sit back in the 10000's and wait up to 30 minutes after the start gun). i couldn't believe i went under 2 hours until i checked my phone and saw the text message updates.
i'm not doing the full. i may do another half before the year is out though

Let's see, the 20th... I partied until 2:45am, woke up in a haze, ate breakfast at the Waffle Shop, got my picture with the JoePa status, drove roughly 300 miles, ate sushi, watched the Eagles game in between naps, and passed out for good just before midnight.
