Title: Sean Jones, Philadelphia Eagle
Post by: PhillyPhreak54 on March 05, 2009, 05:17:08 PM
He's visiting tomorrow.

I like this move.

Are miles worth more if you fly out of Philly or something? That's the only reason I can see some of these guys coming in for a visit.

I didn't even know he was a free agent.  Has he had a couple of bad years of late or something?

I've been wondering if The Plan is to bring in a SS and move Mikell to FS

He had a knee injury last year, played 12 games. He's had 14 pics in the last 3 seasons.

I think he struggled last year, but he's generally quite highly regarded.

Can't hurt.

Seriously?  Again with the making a big deal between a SS and a FS?

The Eagles' Pro Bowl RG is probably going to be at LT this year.  There's a much bigger difference between those two spots than there is between the two safety spots.

P.S.  This is comedy gold (the comments below). (http://www.philadelphiaeagles.com/news/Story.asp?story_id=17506)

Someone mentioned making Reggie Brown a safety.

Yes, seriously. JJ imo is fairly good with adjusting scheme to personnel if need be, and says (ideally) the safeties should be interchangeable, but he plays mostly man/free pass coverages unless it's zone for long passing downs or something like they can't stop Fitz. If they bring in a 220 - 225 lb SS, he's not going to be interchangeable with Mikell and won't be able to play centerfield like Dawk did.

This guy has 14 INT's the first 3 years he's started and last year he only played 12 games. I think the guys might have some ball hawking skills even at that size. Mikell has 5 career INT's. Bring this guy in!
Title: Re: Sean Jones, Possible Eagle
Post by: PhillyPhanInDC on March 05, 2009, 08:22:55 PM
The guy can lay the wood. He's been one of the brighter spots are a very poor squad. He gone left on an island a lot of the time in Clevland, and held his own. With better CBs, I like the idea of just letting this guy fly around. I had hoped the Eagles would have pursued him at some point in the FA period.

Quote
Jones had his best statistical season in 2006. He started all 16 regular season games and had a breakout season recording 111 tackles and led all strong safeties with 5 interceptions. He made a career high 13 tackles at the Cincinnati Bengals on September 17. He was named the AFC Defensive Player of the week with three tackles and two interceptions versus the New York Jets on October 29. Just as he did in the previous season, he started in all 16 regular season games of the 2007 season. He had 96 tackles and five interceptions, which again led all players at his position.

They really, really want to make Demps the FS of the future.  Really, really.  Problem is that they are not so sure that the future can start today, and their "stopgap" signed with Denver.

Plan B?  Someone almost as old as Dawkins
Plan C?  Guy not coming off his best year that wants to prove himself and get REALLY paid next year

They actually brought him in to get in there and compete with Kolb:

QuoteThe Atlanta, GA, native attended Westlake High School. As a senior quarterback in 1999, Jones threw for 2,490 yards and 31 touchdowns, while rushing for 806 yards and 11 scores. He also notched 13 interceptions as a defensive back, en route to all-state and All-USA Today honorable mention honors.

agree--the eagles probably offered a 3-4 yr deal with a very small signing bonus. I think its very wise on his agents part...especially coming into this defensive system where his chances of playing well are very high

you got an uncapped year coming up, he plays well--cha-ching.

Fine with me... if he comes in and light shtein up... he helps the team and next year, the Eagles value the secondary like nobody's biz so, maybe they'll throw the money out there to try to keep him.

Odds of the team telling everyone the he got injured in game 5 of the season and forcing Demps down our throats for the rest of the year whether he deserves it or not?

97%

Odds of Banner then trying to lowball him on a 4 year deal as he laughs his way out of town? I say 200%.

He won't be an Eagle next year, but who cares?  Denver will cut Dawkins.

We can get Dawkins back for so friggin' cheap, it'll be awesome!

players should know to NEVER sign a one year deal with the eagles..for one banner is already pissed at jones right now for not excepting a lowball long term deal....so hes one mistake away from being blackballed.....hes also a midseason extension rejection away from sitting on the bench because banner will wanna kill his value on the open market merely out of spite

I guess Washington didn't make him an offer.

I cannot say I am disagreeing with this at all, excepting that you are iffy at best on when to use "accepting" vs. "excepting."

Jones is being brought in to fill the gap for a year so that they can draft a replacement...

not this year...could be the worst year ever for safeties...in fact there might only be 2 safties and corners combined in the first round

Good thing the Eagles have two picks then, that doubles their chances of getting one.

Good thing they'll end up in the top 10 next year so they can snatch up Taylor Mays.

You know that if they end up in the top half of the first round next year they'll trade out.

what if they end up in the top third
Title: Re: Sean Jones, Philadelphia Eagle
Post by: General_Failure on March 08, 2009, 02:08:18 PM
They'll draft a lineman. After trading out of that pick.

If they're in the top third, they'll trade their first and second to move up to the top fifth and THEN draft a lineman.

After watching the clip of TO burning Consindine and beating Dawk during that early Monday night game over and over and over on ESPN last night (you'd think it was the only two clips they had on file of Owens) I am no longer freaking out.

Whoa whoa whoa - Are you saying Jones has Munson speed?
Title: Re: Sean Jones, Philadelphia Eagle

Why would he need Munson speed when covering Fitzgerald? He'd only need Fitzgerald speed, or maybe Vick speed.

So much for this move. Dude is running with the 2nd/3rd stringers. He's looked terrible on STs too.

Macho Harris, who has to get an MRI for his ankle, was 1st team FS last night which was kind of surprising.

He should continue to be the starting FS.

WHile Macho hasn't really made any mistakes, he hasn't really made any big plays either.

Sean Jones hits like a truck and has a nose for the ball.

From what I understand he is the starter now.

Yeah. Reid said he would have started last week even if Macho was healthy. That's pretty much the definition of starter.
