Title: Baseball Cards/Sports Cards
Post by: hbionic on February 21, 2009, 02:24:02 PM
Anyone still collect? I have not since early 90's...but I have an old stash...I know most baseball cards are worthless now...but there was something about buying them and starting an album...even if you filled it in with the likes of a bunch of nobody's...it was a pretty cool feeling.

My notables are:

Donruss-Cal Ripken Jr. Rookie card
and a bunch of Nolan Ryan cards.... jocked him when I was younger...always thought he was a bad ass even before he kicked Ventura's ass.
Billy Ripken error card with (farg Face) at the end of the bad.

Im gonna have to go digging.

I still have my stash. I had a lock box with a 68 Mantle, Bench rookie, Schmidt rookie, Carlton 2 year, Mays 1960, Billy Williams rookie, Rose 2nd year and a bunch of other great cards I don't feel like remembering that somehow walked off when I went into the Navy. I still 4 plastic bins of Baseball/Hockey/Basketball/Football cards with my expensive ones in plastic.

I'm pretty sure that we're about 20 years too late to make money on the cards we all have under our beds in our parents' houses.

My collection of Mike Schmidt cards is unmatched.

I collect the basic hobby versions of Upper Deck for the four main sports each year.  The 05-06 set with the Crosby, Ovechkin, Richards, Carter, Vanek and Phaneuf RCs is worth around $1100....

I have over 25,000 cards, mostly baseball. However I have not bought any cards since 1994. I don't even remember most of what I have.

I was into collecting cards in the early 80's when it was still a hobby.  I have a collection of Yankees cards that go back to the 40's and  never paid more than $17 for any card.

IIRC it was that whole Pete Rose Rookie Card fiasco that forever changed the face of the hobby.

As soon as it became confusing as to whether I was reading Sports Collectors Digest (et al)  or The Wall Street Journal I bailed out.

my mom got me a couple really cool gifts for my birthday.

first gift is a 1983/84 uncut sheet of 72 basketball cards primarily featuring the championship sixers squad from 83.  it also includes the entire set from the 83 finals.  there's also a few misc cards on it including (2) dominique wilkins rookie cards and a james worthy rookie.  right now i've got it in a giant cardboard sleeve for protection but once i get it framed i'll take a pic and post it.

2nd gift is a pete rose autographed baseball

3rd gift was a few individual cards.

2008 ryan howard topps heritage
1975 nolan ryan/steve carlton topps strikeout leaders
1977 mike schmidt topps
1974 mike schmidt topps
2 kevin kolb rookie cards (she doesn't know any better)
2007 upper deck exquisite yoel hernandez autographed rookie card.  i can't even say that i really remember who that dude is but the only thing i could find online about him says that he re-signed with the phils in dec 08 after spending a year in the mexican league (presumably throwing to the legendary jake taylor).

all in all, not too shabby.

My wife bought me the Schmidt rookie a few years ago.  That was life BC, when we had a bit of extra money to throw around.  If I ever get rid of my collection, I'm keeping the Schmidts.  That will be our family heirloom (along with my grandfather's WWII medals).
