From what I remember, Dougie lacked the physical tools, not the smarts. IIRC when he moved to Cleveland, and the Eagles played them, the Eagles defense got embarassed in a way that has only been done to them by Manning. And it turned out it was Dougie who was pretty much responsible for the whole offensive game plan of the Browns.

Mind you also that it is a general rule (almost a law) that middle of the pack (or below) players usually make fare better coaches than former stand-outs, especially when they have to coach those not of the once-in-a-decade-natural-talent types. A rule that seems to go for any sport.

Why in the world would Gruden do that? I mean he can get a head coaching job easily so I think he would rather sit out a year and either get a good college job or one of 10 or so head coach positions available next yr in the NFL.

Besides Reid would never sacrifice his boy Marty and demote him.

Gruden is Barry Switzer with a better publicist. I don't want him or his stupid faces anywhere near this team again. The guy bitches about specific players more than I do.
Title: Re: Doug Pederson, Philadelphia Eagle (again)
Post by: Magical_Retard on January 31, 2009, 07:10:39 PM
He is better than Marty though. And I think he has enough of a backbone that if he was on this staff he would not just simply follow Reid's crazy offensive philosophy. And that is exactly why he would never be considered even if he wanted to do this. And he doesn't. I don't even know how this started? Who mentioned it on WIP? A caller?

Did he, or did he not, win a superbowl with a pre-built team, then proceed to do nothing for the rest of his time in that city?
Title: Re: Doug Pederson, Philadelphia Eagle (again)
Post by: Rome on January 31, 2009, 08:01:19 PM
Switzer took a dynastic team at the end of its roll and basically stood there looking stupid while the Hall of Famers on the field took care of business for the third time.

Gruden, on the other hand, took a team of losers who couldn't win a road game with the air temperature under 40 degrees and led them to a Super Bowl win, and he beat the team he had coached just the year before in the same game.

I'll agree that the shine is off Gruden's apple, but comparing him to a meathead like Barry Switzer is ridiculous, dude.

Regardless, Gruden >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Morningwood.

Title: Re: Doug Pederson, Philadelphia Eagle (again)
Post by: Magical_Retard on January 31, 2009, 09:17:59 PM
I actually think Gruden is not that great of a coach. In fact he might best as a coordinator but his attitude is exactly why he would never be brought here. Al though according to reports from players in Tampa Bay he likes to get into fights with players and even belittle them if they get hurt.

Marty is not going anywhere unless he is somehow magically offered a Head Coach job. Only way that happens is if this team somehow wins the Superbowl.

So basically MM is here to stay as long as Reid is here.

At this point in his career I think Gruden would rather be a high school HC than an NFL OC.

Agreed. I have never understood the love affair with Gruden. He's highly overrated. He hates young players, he hates developing young QBs (as evidenced by his starting QBs; Gannon, Johnson, Garcia, Griese, etc) and his offense is restrictive and archaic.

Remember all the dink and dunk bitching about Andy the first few years? Bring Gruden in and watch those down field passes go bye-bye.

theres no question that if gruden is the eagles coach over the last decade that they have at least one lombardi

i love the people that say he won with dungys team yet dont mention how he beat his own team in that superbowl...hi haterz

hes not chuck knoll or joe gibbs but again to compare him to switzer is just laughable

He won the Super Bowl with an inherited defense that beat up the offense he constructed in Oakland.
Title: Re: Doug Pederson, Philadelphia Eagle (again)
Post by: Magical_Retard on February 03, 2009, 10:06:20 AM
He also did nothing since because the so called offensive genius could not find a QB, which should be a alarm for ppl who think good QBs are just available all the time, and constantly had one of the worst offenses in the league.

Still with this team here in Philly, with this defense, and this QB he probably could have won at least 1 SB and thats 1 more than Reid ever will.

He's not Switzer because Switzer was an oaf. A true figure-head who contributed nothing and rode Johnon's coattails.

Gruden did beat his own team. But his offensive philosophy is poor (more dink and dunking than the Eagles ever did under Reid), he does not like young players, and more so he will not play a young QB nor does he have interests in developing young QBs.

The young QB thing means nothing here because McNabb should have at least 4 ore seasons here. But eventually he will have to groom one, and that will not happen. We'd see a revolving door of old washed up people like the Brad Johnson's, Jeff Garcia's and Brian Griese's of the world.

He is overrated.

Since he doesn't have a ring, we can't put Stevie on a pedestal with Gruden, Billick, and Switzer.

Switzer did what he was supposed to do. Stay out of the way. If Reid took over for Johnson with that Dallas team he would have insisted on making Aikman pass 65% of the time and ignore Emmit out of the backfield.

Switzer may suck but he was smart enough to know what he should not do.
