BDawk Says He Can Still Play
Spare Brian Dawkins the sorrowful tut-tutting. Dawk and the Eagles' defense suffered through a bad night in Dallas. As far as Dawkins is concerned, this does not mean he can't play anymore, as he prepares to turn 35 next month.
"This is not the first time I've given up a couple of plays, it won't be the last time," Dawkins said, as the Eagles began preparations for Pittsburgh. "The thing about being in the secondary is, you have short memory. You line up and you do it again, and that's what I'm going to do."
"I know everyone has their opinions, and they can have their opinions. I know the facts. And the fact is, I can play this game. I can do what I need to do for my teammates ... at the end of the day, that's what matters. What matters is what my coaches think, and they know, what my teammates know, and what I know. That's what I put my trust in."
Asked if he felt he should be cut some slack, as a 6-time Pro Bowler and one of the franchise's all-time greats, Dawkins said: "No, man, this is Philadelphia! Do you actually know where we are, in the city of Philadelphia? There's not too many people that's going to be cut slack, and I understand that. That's why I don't make a big deal of it. I know the same fans that are questioning what I'm doing are the same fans that are going to be hip-hip-hooraying when I grab a pick and take it to the house ..."
Asked about maybe needing to make allowances, substituting guile for speed as he gets older, Dawkins brushed off the suggestion:
"I am 34 years old. Proud of it. Thank you, Jesus, for allowing me to get to 34 playing in the NFL. I'm going to continue to play this game at a high level as long as I can, I'm going to protect my body, make sure I'm out there on the field for my guys, and I'm going to play ball. I'm going to play ball at 34, I'm going to play ball at 35, and whatever else comes after that, I'm going to play ball! So if I give up a deep ball and you want to say I'm slow, go ahead! Guess what? The next time, I'm going to try to make the same play again. At 34 or 35 years old. Thank you very much."
And with that, Dawkins stepped down from the NovaCare podium. It was the most forceful closing statement in recent NovaCare oratory. Your Eagletarian couldn't help but think that if Andy Reid or Donovan McNabb could lay it out like that, fans would have a lot fewer problems relating to them.
Dawk sounded like Winston Churchill (we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender... )
(Yeah, Conlin usually is the guy with the WWII analogies around here. But it's not like he holds a copyright, or anything.)
Come to think of it, Monday night was a bit like Dunkirk for the Eagles' D, and like Dunkirk, it came early in the campaign, with quite a few battles left to fight. Maybe there's still time for 2008 to emerge as the Birds' finest hour.
WEAPON X!
When exactly was the last time he grabbed a pick, let alone took it to the house?
1999?
Haters.

Hell yea Dawk, tell them how it is. Still tops in the league
Bein' old.
He'd make a great secondary coach. Or maybe even a special teams coach (the position isn't available, but it should be).
LOL at thinking Demps is ready

4 INTs in his last healthy year, 2 years ago. Last year he only had 1.
He was left out to dry, you cant run the same Schemes with his speed where it is, but he'll be back Sunday.
Why, is he getting dressed now to make it down the tunnel in time?
it was much more than just the TO touchdown or even the dallas game...hes visibly sloth like slow this year compared to what he was a few years ago...basically instead of hoping he makes big plays this year you gotta hope he doesnt get toasted...the less you notice him this year the better hes doing
cant joselio hanson's dick play safety?
If he can get some windmill action going he can do it.
He had one bad game (and not really all that bad) and some of you are ready to send him to the glue factory. Remarkable.
I'm ready to send DeSean Jackson to the bottom of the Delaware, and he still has upside.

This has actually been a trend. Apparently, the excuse was that he wasn't healthy last year, so I guess this is his only healthy bad game in recent memory.
Still, he is clearly not the player he once was. He's fine, but he's not great.

Give him credit for having the right attitude and being angry about it. Come out and make some plays against Pissburgh and all will be well.
Oh, and look at Les Bowen still salty as farg because Big Bad Andy and Donovan don't talk to the media like he wants them to.

Its not the first time they have done that.
On late games (when they return home later than normal from road MNF) they sometimes postpone them and just wait for the regular Wednesday/Thursday deals.
this wasnt just a regular late game...it was a dallas game and an all timer...you HAVE to talk the next day...guaranteed had they won he would have found time
He was going to talk in circles anyways, not sure what you want to hear that you know he wasn't going to say anyways.
seriously can the eagles sign adam dimichele? he is a better 4th qtr qb than mcnabb and he plays for temple.

i still think you should talk regardless but if they had beaten arizona in some non descript monday night game then fine take a day off
did he even have a full presser today?
Dawk played very well against the Rams, boys and girls. He had a bad game against the Cowboys, yes, but there's going to be a lot of excellent defenses that have long days against that crew, not just the Eagles and Dawk.
Who didn't play well against the Rams in that game?
Considine.
Firing squad for Considine, suffocation for Jackson, retirement for Dawkins.

because the media should have the opportunity to ask pertinant questions and the fans should have the chance to hear the answers to those questions after a game like that...the answers he gives are irrelevant...we deserve to be able to have the questions asked...without the fans there is no philadelphia eagles and part of being a fan is having the team explain games like that...its pathetic that they didnt post

farg no, and ive nver seen an issue. i havent listened to Andy's Coaches show in years, but cut the grass, and put on the radio in the shower. another classic Dawk move. how can you not love this guy?! they have been sending him on blitz's out the ass this year and I am loving it. first Romo, now he got Big Ben on a forced fumble.
It's really where he's best now. He's great against the pass as far as positioning and awareness but has lost a step. He should definitely play around the line of scrimmage more often than not, and Johnson had him there yesterday.
I did notice that he had GREAT coverage on Samuel's pick, though. In fact, his coverage deep is what allowed Samuel to play the ball.
NFC Defensive Player of the Week
good job old fart
well when he doesnt have to do any pass coverage because rofl cant get rid of the ball, i dont see why not

he might be the fourth best in the defensive backfield
his demise was obviously exaggerated by people including myself after the dallas game but hes still a shell of his former self...hes going to have a few more games like the dallas game and hes going to still make some plays...where as previously he might have had a dallas type debacle like never
If they use him properly, he's good. Can't really compare him to the cover guys though, and if you do, Samuel is probably the best overall player.
Dawkins should be around the line of scrimmage at least 75% of the time.
when youre comparing him to the defensive backfield as mussa did you most certainly can compare him to the cb's....unless his point was that hes better than quinton mikell which wouldnt be a very good point since its basically meaningless
Dawkins is roughly 83 times better than Sean Considine.
andre waters is better than sean considine
Much. Andre Waters is, however, only slightly better than Sean Taylor.
He's our best cover saftey and one of the best tacklers hitters on the team/NFL. Who else in the back field can has those qualities and has done it for as long as Dawkins? He is our best overall DB. Im sticking to it. He's still a safety...we have all seen Dawkins whiff or cover bad even in his prime...it happens to the best.
Jesus, put it away mussa, there are children about.
He's still a great player when he's blitzing or covering the run. He ain't to good a cover guy anymore. He couldn't cover Witten. I was glad he didn't have to cover Miller against the Steelers.

QuoteIF EAGLES DON'T WANT DAWKINS, HE'LL GO ELSEWHERE
Posted by Mike Florio on January 11, 2009, 12:46 p.m.
Eagles safety Brian Dawkins, drafted by the team was back in 1996, is due to become a free agent after the season.
As of now, there's been no serious effort to extend his deal.
FOX's Pam Oliver reports that Dawkins will play elsewhere next season if the Eagles don't re-sign him.
But Dawkins doesn't think it'll come to that.
"When that time comes [to renegotiate with the Eagles], hopefully we'll be able to get something done, but I'm not sitting here telling you that I don't think it's gonna get done, because I believe it will."
If the Eagles really wanted him, however, they'd already have a new deal done. But since he's 35 years old, the team might want to see how he holds up through the postseason run before making any decisions about 2009.
Sign him.
Seeing him in another uniform would be horrible.
I'm torn, but if they win a championship they could resign Andre Waters and I'd be on board.

If the Eagles win the Super Bowl, McNabb will be a first ballot HOFer
Were you listening to Mike & Mike this morning too?
Ha - yes, I was. They have me convinced even without a Super Bowl title, McNabb will be HOF worthy in another 2 or 3 somewhat healthy seasons.
Even though I am a McNabb homer; I agree. If he wins a SB this year coupled with several more solid seasons he's a lock.
Is Brian Dawkins doing the Jedi mind trick to the rest of his team mates? I think he is personally willing a Superbowl run.

No, that makes him Jim Kelly
Jim Kelly won his conference championships
Most of them, anyway.
if McNabb loses all 4 Superbowls he attends he has my vote
I'm sure he's relieved by that.
we're tight
imo kelly is in not for his four superbowls but because he started late in the nfl and lost three or four years to the usfl...his numbers arent awesome like tarkenton so would four superbowl losses that kelly was terrible in elevate him to hof status?...i dont think so...i think the fact that he was ridiculously dominant in the usfl and that a lot of that would have translated to big numbers in the nfl puts him over the top
I always thought they let him in because he was a perennial loser and his kids are farged up. In short, enshrinement for pity's sake.
Beside, farg the HoF. Stupid institution. Whether baseball, football, or sailing...waste of time and money.
baseball is the only one worth anything and even that is slowly going down hill with embarrassing admissions like jim rice
racist
I don't think McNabb belongs in the Hall without a ring or accumulating a few more freakish stat years, but consider that Jim Kelly spent his key Bills years throwing to one HOFer, tossing bombs to another guy who will be in the HOF within a couple years, dumping off screens to a HOF running back, all under a HOF coach.
McNabb had one year of TO, a couple good but not HOF -- or even really All-Pro -- running backs, a few good O-linemen, and basically everyone else on his offense has been a pile of feces.
so McNabb is barely above Bernie Kosar huh
If McNabb wins a SB he is a lock imo, he won't be judged by his numbers.
As far as I know Kelly, with the K-Gun no huddle, was the first offense to go no huddle as a base offense. The innovation probably got him HOF points. McNabb should have comparable passing numbers in a year or two but also has run for a lot more yards and TDs. Even if NcNabb doesn't win a SB, another couple of good years should put him in.

The aforementioned Boomer Esiason did it first.
quad-dra-fecta----INT, sack, fumble recovery & caught a TD pass! HOF = man who deserves his due in one game!

what are you talking about....comparing moon to mcnabb is ludicrous...in fact they are complete opposites....one has off he charts numbers and one has won a lot of playoff games...if mcnabb gets in it will be because he won a superbowl and a ton of playoff games...where as moon got in strictly on his numbers...milk and vodka
ok so Moon polished off 49,000 passing yards McNabb has 30,000. McNabb plays 5 more seasons plus, get on avg 3000 yards, gets to 45,000 yards, plus Moon has has 291 career TD passes, McNabb has 194...when McNabbs career is over he will be right there with Moon in that category as well.....still think its milk and vodka?
finkle and einhorn
wait so youre saying IF mcnabb ends up top five all time in td passes and yards thrown he will make the HOF?...wow youre incredibly perceptive
but even if he does that there really isnt any comparison btwn him and moon...the comparison to moon would be a dan fouts or maybe a vinny testaverde
no youre right..no comparison at all...shut up
