Safety, UTEP
yay, safety!
Good call, Dillen.
I like this pick alot
Mo, you hiding in the Eagles draft room...jesus christ...you had that up there before it came up on tv
I'm really happy with this one. I wouldn't have minded him with the Smith pick so at this point it's good value.
QuoteDemps is an extremely productive player who intercepted 17 passes during his career at UTEP, three of which he returned for touchdowns. One thing you look at with a player who causes turnovers is what he does with them and Demps picked up 404 yards on those interceptions, averaging 23.7 yards per return. He was also an effective kick and punt returner for UTEP. Demps seems to have a knack for finding the ball in the end zone. He returned two interceptions 100 yards in his senior season and picked off a pass in the end zone of the Senior Bowl which he returned well. Demps shows good man coverage ability and played some cornerback due to injuries. He has very good instincts in the passing game and is a very good centerfielder. Demps also has very good hands for a defensive back. He is solid tackler and will come up and play the run, however he is far from an impact hitter. There is something to be said for a player that makes something happen every time he gets the ball in his hands whether it's an interception, punt return or kick return.
I value Demps anywhere from the 2nd to 3rd round. There isn't another player in the draft at safety as productive as he was at safety with his level of talent. He didn't play against the best level of competition, but he certainly has the ability to play and start at the NFL level.
QuotePlayed some CB due to injuries. Very productive player and a big time playmaker. Picked off 17 passes in his career, including 5 this year. 2 of those INTs came in the endzone and were run back 100 yards for TDs. Plays the passing lanes well. Anticipates throws and will jump routes. Plays the ball aggressively. Has good hands. Wrap-up tackler, but doesn't drive through the target with force. Quick feet. Good COD. Can come up quickly in run support, but doesn't do that consistently and isn't a big hitter. Much more of a cover guy than a run defender. Didn't play centerfield much. He's got the skill set to be good at that, but I didn't get to see him do it as often as I'd like. Good, but not great athlete. Doesn't have the hips to play CB. Played in the Senior Bowl. Picked off a pass in the endzone.
Has both PR and KOR experience. Returned 15 punts for 200 yards (13.3 per PR). Ran back 35 kickoffs for 773 yards and 1 TD (22.1 per KOR). Quintin isn't a dynamic return guy, but simply makes things happen when he's got the ball in his hands.

QuoteCompares To: O.J. ATOGWE-St. Louis...Demps lacks the size and strength you look for in a free safety, but there is no denying his ball-hawking skills. He met with adequate success in a late-season move to cornerback as a senior, but it was evident that his lack of speed will see him get beaten by the quicker receivers at the next level (the opposition averaged 23.92 yards per pass completion vs. Demps at cornerback in 2007). For now, he will bring good value in the sub package, but to move him to cornerback is inviting a quick six for the opposition.
So is this guy any good?
Got a couple of Qs at safety now..
The analysts on NFL network sure like the kid....and they made some good points about the need at that position that the Eagles have.
An obvious position of need for the Birds.
Strengths:
Has terrific instincts...Outstanding hands...Has excellent range...Quick to break on the ball...Made a lot of big plays and was very productive...A team leader with top intangibles....Has a ton of experience...Also offers a lot of special teams potential.
Weaknesses:
Timed speed is just average...Not a great natural athlete...Is not real physical...Is not a reliable tackler...Has trouble getting off blocks...Does not offer much versus the run...Size and bulk are marginal...Not real strong or physical...Upside's limited.
Notes:
Was a four-year starter...A one-dimensional coverage safety...A true playmaker in the secondary...Also returned kicks in college...Doesn't have all the physical tools you look for but it's hard to ignore the production..Probably best suited for backup duty and a situational role in the pros but he is the type of guy you hate to doubt.

Everyone, but mainly the Eagles. No I don't put myself on the team.
anybody here have family that goes to UTEP?
I don't even know what UTEP stands for, or what state it's in. So, no.
University Texas El-Paso. I'm pretty sure it's in New Mexico.
lol
very funny
haha
Good pick. I'd rather have a safety that will break on the ball and take it back for six than one that hits really hard.
good pick. i liked joiner but demps is like second favorite.
I like this pick. Another ballhawk for the secondary... he can return kicks as well.

QuoteI love this pick. Demps is a gamer who will learn from Brian Dawkins at the safety spot in Philly. A three-year starter at UTEP, he had more interceptions (17) than your typical college safety. He's great in coverage and can hit. A steal for the Eagles here.
I like this pick I just wish his skin was a little looser.
Did someone say that his clocked time is only average? I just read that it was in the 4.3s...

Sounds like this guy could be a good dime back this year, maybe challenge Hanson for the nickel (assuming Lito's gone). If it's true he's not a good tackler, that rules him out as a future starting FS. Need that last line of defense solid. On the other hand, if anyone can teach him it's Dawk.

Eagles' Demps confident he's got game
By Ray Parrillo
Inquirer Staff Writer
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - If there's something that fazes Quintin Demps about the fight to make the transition from a relatively obscure college football outpost, Texas-El Paso, to the NFL, the defensive back has yet to let on at the Eagles' training camp, either with his play or his demeanor.
After all, getting a handle on Jim Johnson's attacking defense can leave a kid in a state of confusion, right?
"It's been kind of easy," Demps said, shrugging. "You put a lot of time in studying, and you'll get it."
The UTEP Miners are part of the Conference USA, which has a reputation for high scores and little defense, and is not often compared favorably to the Southeastern Conference or Pac-10.
"Yeah, that's why I've got a chip on my shoulder now," said Demps, who feels he dropped to the fourth round of the draft partly because the Conference USA is not a so-called power conference. "I know the game. I want to compete. I want to be good."
What about adjusting to the heat? The grueling two-a-day practices.
"There ain't no breeze in El Paso. This is nothing, man," Demps said.
Among the April draft picks likely to make some impact on the Eagles this season, such as receiver DeSean Jackson and defensive tackle Trevor Laws, the 23-year-old Demps is the most self-assured.
Demps characterized himself as a man's man, a playmaker, the steal of the draft. His idol is Deion Sanders, and he likes to wear a "swagger chain" around his neck.
Talk like that, and you'd better walk the walk when you show up for your first NFL training camp.
Yesterday, though, after another practice during which Demps drew praise from teammates after driving Kevin Curtis to the ground after the receiver took one step off the line of scrimmage, he wanted to make it clear that he's not about himself, that he was merely venting with some of his brash draft-day comments.
"I was kind of upset I didn't go earlier [in the draft]," he said. "I was ready to practice right then and there. That was the feeling in my heart. I was fired up. Some people took it the wrong way. I'm not a selfish player. I'm a team player. More than being a Pro Bowl player, I want to win a Super Bowl. To clear it up, that's what I meant.
"Hey, I'm just a pup in this league, trying to become a dog."
Johnson said yesterday that defensive backs like Demps are rare because he has shown his worth at both cornerback and safety. Demps played both positions at UTEP, moving to the corner his senior year.
"He impresses me as a safety and a corner," Johnson said. "He's got good hands. He's trying to learn that safety position here, but I like his ability to cover. We've got him playing a little bit at corner, too, and it looks like he's got a chance there. So we're going to move him back and forth, a little bit at corner, a little bit at safety. But he's got great hands and good ball skills.
"These kind of guys are hard to find, and we love to find these guys."
A third-team all-American, Demps had 17 career interceptions. In a game against Houston in 2005, he twice intercepted Eagles backup quarterback Kevin Kolb. One of them sealed a Miners win in overtime. He returned two picks for 100 yards. But that was then.
I like it.

Not quite sure how to feel about that one...
1. That's damn good because Demps can jam like hell and hold his own against a starting WR in this league.
or
2. The Eagles' starting WR is getting knocked on his ass by a DB 3 months out of college.
I like Demps' swagger though... he's confident in his abilities, but knows he's still got work to do if he wants to make it in this league. IGY's driving the Demps bandwagon... I'm ridin' shotgun.

Sounding like Demps is going to be the KOR. Spads said Booker wasn't working out there.

I'm not so sure that Demps was working out there either, but Booker flat out sucked. I think both players are likely to make the team due to what they've shown on offense and defense though.
It's too bad that there's no one on the team less valuable than Brian Westbrook or DeSean Jackson who can return kicks.
What about Greg Lewis?!?
It's hard to judge the value of something worthless.

QuoteThe Eagles got their touchdown back right away. Demps took the ensuing kickoff right up the middle, bounced out of a tackle by kicker Stephen Gostkowski, and was untouched by any other Patriot en route to a 101-yard score that made it 17-3.
"He gotta get in the weight room," Demps said of Gostkowski.
Someone wondered what a returner sees, as he heads upfield.
"You see three fat boys and a fast dude in front of you [blocking]," Demps said. "You get behind all four of them."

QuoteEagles Notebook: Can Demps be like Deion on field?
By LES BOWEN
Philadelphia Daily News
bowenl@phillynews.com
Growing up in San Antonio, Quintin Demps was a big Deion Sanders fan.
That's as far as Demps would go last week, as the Eagles prepared to visit the Dallas Cowboys.
"He was a shut-down corner, returned kicks. He had a swagger to him, he wore a gold necklace, he was just my man," Demps said.
Was the Eagles' rookie safety and kick returner a Cowboys fan, then? Sanders was a Cowboy when Demps was a youngster; Dallas was where Deion spent 5 years of his prime (1995-99), and achieved his greatest fame.
"What does that tell you, then?" Demps asked, slyly avoiding uttering the forbidden words.
Demps learned fast. Just a few days earlier, in the postgame locker room after the opener against St. Louis, he'd been asked about Dallas and had inquired of reporters whether it would be proper to term the Cowboys "rivals," like, say, the nearby taterskins, given that Dallas was so far away. The answer was affirmative.
The chance to play on Monday Night Football is big for a rookie, and to do it in the final season of Texas Stadium is especially sweet for Demps, who played at UTEP, but never got on the field with the big star on it, in high school or in college.
Demps said he has been in Texas Stadium only once, as a spectator - he went to see the Cowboys play the Patriots last season, focusing in on corner Asante Samuel. "I like his game, so I watched him a little," Demps said. At the time, he never dreamed he would be dressing just down the row from Samuel a year later - but in Philadelphia.
Tonight, about 35 friends and family will be on hand to watch him run back kicks, Demps said. He was able to scrounge enough teammates' tickets to go around. This will be among the highlights of his young career, right up there with the moment last February in Indianapolis, when Demps shook Sanders' hand at the NFL Scouting Combine.
"It was right before I ran my 40," Demps recalled. "I was supposed to be focused, but I saw Deion. I was like a little kid. I said, 'Whassup, man!' I had to run, so I just shook his hand."
He then posted a 4.39, which was just fine for a safety and returner who can back up at corner, but not exactly Deion-like.
Demps did have a gold necklace he wore under his uniform, though, until he misplaced it in the preseason.
"I'm going to get one" before traveling to Dallas, he vowed. "I'm going to have one for the game."
Birdseed
The Cowboys think they have a Brian Westbrook-type weapon potentially in rookie Felix Jones, a player the Eagles were very impressed with going into the draft. The Cowboys probably want to run more, with Marion Barber and Jones, than many teams the Birds will face . . . There seemed to be a fair bit of intrigue over whether Cowboys cornerback Terence Newman (groin) would be able to play. Adam (formerly Pacman) Jones started in his place last week, opposite Anthony Henry . . . The Eagles have won three of their last four visits to Texas Stadium . . . Westbrook has caught at least one pass in 63 straight games, the longest current streak by an NFL running back. *

And I'm probably older.
QuoteThe Eagles' coaching staff wasn't as forgiving about Demps' late hit on Warner. Demps said secondary coach Sean McDermott was all over him at halftime.
"I've never seen that vein pop of his neck like that before," Demps said. "He was mad at me. A month later, man, I regretted it. I didn't feel good about that (hit) because at the end of the day we are all one in the NFL. It was a cheap shot. I was frustrated at the time. I got burnt for a touchdown, they weren't kicking me the ball on returns and I got stiff armed."
Demps said the league fined him $7,500 for the hit on Warner.
Fifteen weeks later, Dawkins is in Denver and Demps is the Eagles' free safety.
"My first thought was like, 'Wow, (Dawkins) isn't going to retire an Eagle,' " Demps said. "But then about a week later I was fired up, thinking, 'It's time to go, they're telling me something.' You never replace a Brian Dawkins. I'm just going to take what I learned from him and I'm going to run with it. I learned the same thing I learned from Jim's illness. You have to cherish it. You can't take this for granted that you're a starter because any given day somebody can take your spot."
One of the things I'm excited to see is how Demps comes out and plays this year. He's got the swagger and hopefully he learned from the NFCCG.
But shouldn't we talk about how huge a mistake it was to let Dawkins go? Please, let's do!

QuoteEagles Sunday Minicamp Report
Posted by Mike Florio on May 3, 2009, 10:26 a.m.
Here's the latest out of the Eagles' ongoing minicamp, one line at a time. (Note that the lines without a link come from quotes circulated by the Eagles to members of the media — and to me.)
Defensive coordinator Jim Johnson seems to favor Quintin Demps at free safety, despite the acquisition of Sean Jones.
Johnson said that he views Jones as more of a strong safety.
Johnson also talked about his cancer diagnosis, which came after he began experiencing severe back pain during the team's 2008 playoff run.
And he has no intention of walking away from football. "It's part of my life. It keeps me going. I don't feel any different coaching. I'm coaching the same way."
S Quintin Demps acknowledged that his first-half hit on Cardinals QB Kurt Warner in the NFC title game, for which Demps was flagged and fined, was a "cheap shot."
For now, Demps is the kick returner and WR DeSean Jackson is the punt returner, but WR Jeremy Maclin is being considered for both jobs, and CB Ellis Hobbs could return kicks.
Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said that he'd like to see the team improve in the red zone.
The coaching staff might be trying to replace WR Reggie Brown's decreased reps with increased praise; "Another player who has done an outstanding job is Reggie Brown," Mornhinweg said. "He is healthy. It's good to see him healthy and running fast and catching the ball. He's smooth. He was impressive [Friday], as well as [Saturday] morning."
Victor Abiamiri and Juqua Parker will be competing for the starting spot at left defensive end.
"That's going to be a good battle between those [two]," defensive coordinator Jim Johnson said in quotes circulated by the team. "I can't see right now who the starter is. It might be Victor, it might be JP."
Said defensive coordinator Jim Johnson regarding rookie CB Macho Harris: "I see a guy that has a good feel for the game. The first couple of practices [I've seen he's got] a good feel for the game. You look for things like that."
Johnson thinks S Quintin Mikell will be a Pro Bowl player soon.
Despite the acquisition of CB Ellis Hobbs, Johnson said that Sheldon Brown will still start, and that Joselio Hanson will still work the nickel.
Mornhinweg also spoke of the ongoing Kevin Kolb experiment: "He is still progressing. He's done a good [job] in this camp so far. He's very comfortable with all of his progression and, his reads, his drops, his footwork, all the things he needs to see. His game management is typically very good. The preseason games will be very important for him as well."
cobb sounds like a winner
