I didn't want to get this lost in the random musings thread. Macnow went on a 40 day cheesteak bender and came up with this list. (http://www.610wip.com/pages/351421.php) He has John's Roast Pork cheesteaks ranked highest, I've eaten there 3 or 4 times and they definitely have great steaks. I was glad to see him give so much love to the Northeast because growing up in that area I've always thought it was the mecca of steaks.

Slacks is a joke, only there because they sponsor his show
i ate at johns last week because they were listed as his best steak...ive been there many times for the pork and never thought to get a steak so take into consideration that its the only steak ive ever gotten there but i thought it was horrible
also he did his contest with provolone...a steak aint a steak without wiz
steves which i think he had at #2 is my favorite in the city
i hope he does hoagies next
for me a great italian hoagie >>> a great steak

I thought I was the only one. That little shack right off Cottman is basically a portal to heaven.
Steve's kicks the shtein out of Pat's, Geno's, Tony Luke's, and Jim's. I've never been to John's, but PhillyGirl has always said it's the best. Actually, that's probably why I didn't make a point to get there.

Wiz is the grossest shtein ever. After Danic Patrick, that is.
Quote27. Lous, 414 East Main Street, Norristown, 610-279-5415.
Lous is a neighborhood dive of Formica table tops and tile floors and understand, when we say dive, we mean it with affection. Some of the best meals come from the most modest of places. This is the home of Norristowns famous Zep, which is a round hoagie spinoff thats best with salami and lots of onions.
We hoped the cheesesteak would be equally special but, alas, it was no better than good. The meat was rather dry and would have benefited from a nice infusion of grease. The roll was best described as generic not up to the standards of some other great bread weve had along this trail. Two plusses, however: Lots of melted cheese running through the sandwich, and some of the best onions weve had.
Weve come to regard onions as the Jon Runyan of the cheesesteak underrated and unappreciated, but essential to the success of the whole. When they do their job, the sandwich works. At Lous, the onions are sweet, carmelized and plentiful. Unfortunately, while the onions were Pro Bowl level, too much of the rest of the sandwich performed like Reggie Brown and L.J. Smith.
I used to go to Lou's a lot growing up and pretty much agree with everything Macnow says about it. The steaks are ok but have plenty of cheese. The bread never seemed all too fresh though. Which is weird because the rolls they use for their Zeps are delicious.
Also, mushrooms on cheesesteaks>>>>>>>>>onions.

Pat's Bayside Market is the place in Sea Isle I grew up going to for cheesesteaks. They had one called the hulkster that had provolone, pepperoni, pizza sauce, fried onions, mushrooms, and garlic powder on it that was unreal.

Pasty dead whores.
He hit Dallesandro's Vs. Chubby's right on the nail. (some of my old local spots).
Although it's not that hard, Dal's is easily superior, but Chubby's is a full service bar that had good french fires and a good chicken-cheese steak.

QuotePhilly celeb judges name best cheesesteak
By Peter Mucha
Inquirer Staff Writer
Georges Perrier gave low mark after low mark. One place got only 16 out of 50 points from Le Bec-Fin's famed chef.
No doubt, out of the 10 celebrities judging Philly cheesesteaks live Saturday afternoon on WIP (610-AM), Perrier was "the toughest critic on the panel," as host Glen Macnow said.
Then Perrier tried Chink's.
"This eez zee best sandwich I have today!" he proclaimed in his unmistakable accent. His score? A 48!
"Wow! Unbelievable!" exclaimed Macnow.
And yet Chink's of the Northeast didn't win.
When the greasy smoke cleared, the victor - by a slim margin - was John's Roast Pork of South Philadelphia.
John's Roast Pork was also voted No. 1 by those watching the judging at Paddy Whack's Irish Pub on South Street.
The results confirmed Macnow's own opinion, arrived at after trying 45 cheesesteaks in 45 days.
Macnow, however, ranked Steve's Prince of Steaks second, with Chink's third. (To see his list, click this link: http://www.610wip.com/pages/351421.php.)
The makers of Macnow's top six - including Talk of the Town, Grey Lodge Pub, and Slack's Hoagie Shack - were invited to bring enough steaks for everybody in the pub to judge.
Pub patrons also got to try some cheesesteaks Macnow never did - and three made the "Listeners' Choice" list. Fresh Works and Not Just Pizza finished third and fourth (behind John's and Chink's), with Steak Em Up just behind Slack's.
Among the celebrity judges, the vote was very close.
Chink's was also favored by chef Matthew Levin of Lacroix at the Rittenhouse, WIP's Rhea Hughes, CBS3 meteorologist Kathy Orr, and former Eagle Vince Papale.
But John's won big with ex-Phils slugger Greg Luzinski ("Wow. To me that was outstanding! ... I gave them a 50!"), ex-Eagle Ike Reese ("Fantastic sandwich!"), and NFL Films' Ray Didinger ("Best sandwich of the day"), while edging Chink's by a single point with Eagles offensive tackle Jon Runyan.
Perrier gave John's a 44, saying he liked the roasted pepper, but "the other was better."
Anthony Gargano, who cohosts WIP's midday show with Macnow, loved them both, awarding perfect 50s.
The final score: Out of 50, Chink's averaged 43, John's 45.
PG was right again
I grew up a Delco kid so I'm partial to Leo's. I actually prefer the hoagies there to the steaks though. He missed out on Walt's in Clifton Heights which is another recommended spot in Delaware County. It's no Leo's but it's a good steak for outside the city.
Jim's is my favorite of the multiple location places. West Philly > South Street > the other Jim's locations, in my opinion.
Pat's and Geno's are places you have to go for the atmosphere more than the food. I do think Pat's makes a good steak but it's nothing special. They are touristy but I don't think they deserve to be punished for that.
Everyone's got their own taste so I don't see any reason to trash any of the places on the list that I have tried and not felt great about. I agree that Slack's is conspicuously high on the list though.
I like this list just because it's a good list of places to try out. Next time I'm back in the city, I'll have to hit a couple of the spots.
yea im ashamed i haven't even heard of these other places til now. ill be in the snorkeling saturday so ima have to try a macnows
Does this mean we can go back to talking about how gross Cheez Whiz is?
Cheesesteak rule of thumb: never buy a cheesesteak somewhere that calls it a "Philly Cheesesteak". You never know what you are going to get. Actually, it is entertaining to order a cheesesteak in one of these places for a good laugh, but not if you want a cheesesteak. Best non-cheesesteak cheesesteak I ever had was in Japan. I think they put filet mignon on a bun or something...
I grew up in the burbs, and most places don't do whiz out there, so I'm a provalone guy. Nothing wrong with whiz, and if you are drunk/drinking the extra salt is a bonus.
Hoagies? The Cheltenham at Lee's in Abington. The put so much meat in the farger that they have to rip some of the bread out of the roll to make it all fit.
:( I miss cheesesteaks.
In college, the place we went was Joe' Place in Wayne. Good stuff.
Had a scrapple sammich to die for, too. :drool

Tony Luke's, Steve's and Chink's have always been my 3 favorite. I've never tried John's either. Not even for their pork.
I actually like Steve's chicken cheesesteaks better than their regular ones. If anyone ever goes there, check out their chicken steaks. Maybe the best in the city.
I also thought the same exact thing about Slack's. Are you farging kidding me? Their steaks are terrible. What a sellout.
As for the cheese, I've always been an american cheese kinda guy. I hate cheese wiz, and I like provolone, but to me that is a hoagie type of cheese, not ideal for steaks.
i had a rick's in the reading terminal and a white house in AC over the last couple days.
rick's is not that good. white house is still the shtein.
i had a cheesesteak here in florida this afternoon that was about as close to a real cheesesteak as it gets. it was at a place called laspada's in orange city.
the thing was huge, actually. it had real steak and the onions were grilled perfectly. plus they used a nice sharp provolone (at my request) on the steak which really lit the sammich up.
good stuff.
Yeah? So?
I ate a kickass banana today!!
farg I want a cheesesteak so bad. And a beer.
Hahaha. You're in Texas.
Someone from Florida mocking someone from Texas and the whole thing is caught by a dude in Boston on a Philadelphia message board. We're so worldly.

Bush's colon is probably in better shape than Boston.

Tell me about it. I went to hs a few blocks down the road from there and me and a few buddies would walk over there almost every Wed after classes and get a couple cheesesteak strombolis. Then I'd spend all Thursday and half of Friday with mud butt, but it was worth it.

2. The Schmitter, McNally's Tavern, 8634 Germantown Ave., Chestnut Hill. "Three layers of cheese intermingled with fresh-sliced roast beef, grilled onions, Russian dressing, Jersey tomatoes and - ah, yes - fried Hatfield salami." Score: 94.

5. Hot roast pork, Carlino's Specialty Foods, 2616 E. County Line Road, Ardmore. "Lots of provolone (too many places skimp on the cheese), strong greens and hots strong enough to make your head sweat." (John's Roast Pork of South Philadelphia finished at No. 7.) Score: 88.
6. Meatball sandwich, Pastaficio Homemade Pasta Co., Packer Park Shopping Center, South Philadelphia. "Without a doubt, the best meatball sandwich in the city." Score: 87.
shanks chick italy was number one for like the first month or so of that thing so i tried it a while back and it was very underwhelming
nicks speaks for itself...the all time goat sandwich anywhere
pastificio is a hidden gem ive been going to for years...great hoagies
still somehow have never been to mcnallys...has anyone had an og schmitter?
I'm not sure if I could eat a goat sandwich. I figure since I don't like lamb, I probably wouldn't like that.
.00000000375/10
never had the Schmitter at McNallys, but the Citizen Bank Park version has gone downhill over the years. The first year they had it, it was money. Ive had a handful over the years and the one i had this season was the weakest yet. Now its just mass produced with no love.
yeah ive been tempted to try the bank one but ive vowed to hold firm and not have any schmitter until i have the real deal first....i figured it was mass produced averageness
yeah i've had the cbp schmitter and it's nothing special.
the cbp schmitter tastes awful. don't know about the mcnally's one, though. i'm sure it's better just like tony luke's is better than the stadium shtein.
and i agree with igy about nick's. it's unreal.
It's scary.
Finally had a cheesesteak at the White House in AC. I can't say it was the best cheesesteak I ever had, but it was definitely good. Macnow has it ranked 9th and I'd probably rank it in that vicinity...but more like top 10-15. If it were in Philly people wouldn't make as big of a deal about it imo.
you dumb polack. why the farg didn't you get the white house special like i told you to?
i cant tell whether the shady non casino part of ac depression of whitehouse makes the steak better or worse
either way its about what guido diwopo said....borderline top 10

Isn't that where we met up a few years ago before a Phils game so you could give me some tickets to take to the stadium to give to SD? That was pretty much the greatest day of my life.
you can go to nicks to pregame and not give a shtein about going to the game afterwards. it's that good.
Yeah, the roast beef sammich smothered in gravy was great.

I will have to check that out my buddy lives right by 10th and Christian. I will be down there next weekend for the Eagles game so I will have to check it out.
just make sure to check it out
If you're going to check it out, then you should be sure to bring your buddy with you as well because I'm sure he'd also like to check that out while you're checking it out as well. Also.
