ha, no wonder Andy was dodging that question like the plague yesterday
Title: Re: takeo spikes cut
Post by: SunMo on March 06, 2008, 02:33:32 PM
however...Andy made the concession yesterday that in order for them to get a wide receiver that they would have to do something and Howard was trying to make him say that Spikes was the one on the chopping block because he had a cap number of 5.1, maybe this means something is about to happen

most likely thats what it is

what if this also means the impossible might happen...a first round linebacker draft pick

Starting trio is now Gocong/Bradley/Gaither?

Ew.

Post by: Munson on March 06, 2008, 02:36:36 PM
Well...farg.

I don't like this move.

But at least it gets Gaither back to WIL where he belongs. And it looks like all the talk about Bradley playing middle is going to come true.

Or, maybe they actually go LB in the first round now. Anyone worthy at the #19 pick?

I didn't think Spikes was worth $5 million but I would have liked to seen him back.
Title: Re: takeo spikes cut
Post by: The BIGSTUD on March 06, 2008, 02:52:52 PM
I think they could still re-sign Spikes after they land a WR. He wasn't worth that 5 million. I mean he played okay, but not much more than that.

Definitely can be replaced.
Title: Re: takeo spikes cut
Post by: Munson on March 06, 2008, 02:53:56 PM
He was still their best/most experienced LB. That's kind of hard to throw away.

Hopefully this means they're close to a deal for Fitz or Roy. Or CJ.

Don't know about best. That is a tough call. I don't think one clearly outplayed the other. Experience is overrated too IMO. Ruud on Tampa played great as a rookie. If you can play you can play. We just have to hope Bradley can.

if they intended to cut Spikes, they could have considered Vilma.
Oh I forgot, linebackers are not a important for the Eagles....neither is WR or punt/kick returner.
Title: Re: takeo spikes cut

No team was willing to offer a 2nd rounder for Vilma, apparently.  So, you have to wonder what the issue is there.

Something like the Eagles aren't commited to winning and don't value veteran leadership?

In two years when he retires he'll be on DNL and WIP all the time saying how much he loved playing in and for Philly.

GCobb's take:

QuoteAnthony Gargano of 610-WIP just reported that the Eagles have released veteran linebacker Takeo Spikes.  That frees up $5 million dollars and could be a preliminary move to something positive.  This doesn't surprise me at all and was something I was expecting.
I think this is the first shoe to drop.  I thought they would have cut Spikes if the Cardinals had agreed to trade Larry Fitzgerald to them.  If they had given Randy Moss nearly $10 million dollars a year, they would have cut that price in half by cutting Spikes and saving $5 million dollars.

The cutting of Spikes means 2nd year backer Stewart Bradley will be moved to the middle as the starter and Omar Gaither will be moved to the weakside linebacker spot.  This makes the Birds younger at the linebacker positions, bigger and more physical in the middle and better.  It was a good move.

Remember that in the pecking order, the Birds want to acquire Larry Fitzgerald.  If they don't get Fitzgerald then Roy Williams is the guy.  If not Williams then Chad Johnson of the Bengals is next in line.

my dad just called and said that Eskin (yes, my father listens to WIP....and I haven't ousted him from the family) is blabbing that the Eagles have like no cap space and this just freed up enough to get them to sign some of the younger guys and rookies...and that the numbers on the internet are BS.

WTF is he TALKING about?

How could they even have sniffed at Randy Moss with no cap space?

For the first time in a while I'm excited about the Eagles young LB core. Gaither is much more suited for WIL, and Bradley may prove to be a force in the middle. If Gocong improves at all....nice.

No more Barry Gardners and Quentin Cavers...

i count one: trent cole

tell me im missing someone because if not thats four full years and one impact player

thats what this move means to me...not that hes gonna be a huge loss because he wasnt that good but the fact that once again they brought a player in who did nothing

An argument could be made for Kevin Curtis, even though he's pasty white.

Obviously, the assumption is that Asante Samuel is a difference-maker, but we won't know until he does something in an Eagles uniform.  He certainly made a difference for the Eagles last year, though.

QuoteEAGLES CUT SPIKES

When we mentioned on Saturday that Eagles linebacker Takeo Spikes wasn't on the depth chart any longer and inferred that this could be a sign that the Eagles might be dumping him at some point in the future, Eagles web guy Dave Sparado called us "absurd" and "stupid" and "incontinent."  (Okay, we're exaggerating.  He didn't call us stupid.)

Regardless, Spikes is now no longer an Eagle.

According to Adam Schefter of NFL Network and our friends at WIP radio in Philly, Spikes have been cut.

The move creates an immediate $5 million in cap space.

Spikes was traded with quarterback Kelly Holcomb and a late-round pick from the Bills to the Eagles in 2007 for defensive tackle Darwin Walker, who eventually was traded to the Bears.  None of the three players currently is under contract with any NFL team.

Fantastic.

Honestly, the depth chart thing meant nothing.  He was taken off because he was on IR.  They messed up by not updating it all around when they put on Samuel as the starting LCB.

But still, I don't mind PFT claiming victory over Spadaro.

I was thinking the same thing yesterday, they really haven't they have drafted some solid players, but that is it.  That is why I would like to see them take someone like Desean Jackson.  This team has quite a few solid players but they don't really have many difference makers.  On offense they have on Westbrook, at this point McNabb is not.  Defensively the addition of Samuel is probably makes it 2 with Cole.  And Cole is pushing it.

They had set up a profile for him so that it was ready to be linked to as soon as he signed on the dotted line, which never happened.  Unfortunately, they didn't wait to post it online, so someone found it before they had a link to it.  Hilarious.

I definitely expected this move. I'm glad Gaither will move back to his best position IMO.  I expect if he starts all 16 games at WIL, he'll account for at least 6 turnovers.  Bradley is a bigger, more physical LB, who might be better suited at MLB.

If this defense can apply pressure to the QB next year, there will definitely be more turnovers.

First Trot and now Spikes.
The eagles should start a rest-home for slow, over-the-hill MLB's.
Also, I predict that they resign him.

They did address the LB position almost every year. They were just very bad at judging talent at that position, just like WR.  TKO was a physical LB and helped the run defense last year, but that's about it. He wasn't worth $5 mill.

one less washed up overpaid vet around the better. spikes didn't do anything spectacular. it still leaves me a bad feeling in the gut when i look at our linebackers. fargin pathetic. i really hope they get a vet to come in at LB, they need someone please.

i'd still much rather see them get a WR though
Title: Re: takeo spikes cut

1. This angers me because it leaves them with no experience there. Spikes was starting to play well last year once he had the defense down.

2. Bradley in the middle is better than Gaither in the middle. OG is a WIL LB and thats about it. I'd prefer him there than the nickel for sure.

3. Maybe Spikes will come back at a lower salary?

4. If this leads to them trading for a guy, then I am all for it. But I don't buy it because;

They could have acquired the WR and signed him to a new deal before cutting Spikes. They are not scraping the bottom of the cap here like Washington where bonuses need to be converted and guys need to be cut in order to free up room.

But if I am wrong and they somehow, miraculously, acquire Williams, Fitz or Ocho....I'm going to turn my frown upside down.

its not like the eagles are desperate for the cap space.

i get the feeling they are just promoting bradely like they did gocong. not because he deserves it but because they drafted him and they feel like they should promote him.

he was on eskin yesterday and confirmed this...first day of free agency they brought it up with him...

also great point about having guys on your team with that huge desire to win...that have that dog in them as trot says...gocong is a pile of mush and gaither is calm...bradley well see...but especially at linebacker you need crazy men...thats what spikes was and its what this team has been purged of over the last five six years...it scares me to think what happens when dawk leaves....everyone left is either vanilla or pissed about their contract

I know you're mainly talking about the linebackers and I agree for the most part, but I really like how Cole and Bunkley fit into this. They both really care, you can tell. Bunkley probably won't reach the stud pro bowl status like Cole is/will but having two badass guys on your DL for 5+ more years looks good.

I'm impressed by that because to me, that seems like a benefit.  If you eat Mickey D's 3x a day and get all fat and nasty and disgusting, then 2 things are certain:

1.  People won't want to have sex with you because you smell like big macs and hot fudge sundaes.

2.  There isn't a chance in hell you will ever find your happy parts ever again.

So the fact that your sex drive goes to hell is a benefit because you don't have to worry about getting laid or even rubbing one out in lieu of getting laid ever again.

Day 1: Akeem Jordan looked okay today. Is going to need to show more to get in there and compete for the starting job.

Day 2: Jordan had a really bad day today. He really needs to step it up.

Day 3 and on: Yesterday must have been an off day because Jordan is lighting it up today. He's all over the field, making tackles, even had an INT. This guy looks like a real player.
