ESPN's John Clayton suggests that the Bears' flurry of Monday cuts is a "strong" sign that they're planning to franchise Bernard Berrian.

The three cuts the Bears made saved $10.4 million in cap room and it'd cost $7.848 million to tag Berrian.

Title: Re: Franchised/Released/Traded--2008

Dansby has been offered a one-year deal worth just over $8 million, and the Cardinals can continue to negotiate a long-term deal through July 15.
He must be offered a one year deal with a salary equal to or greater than the average of the top five salaries at the player's position in the previous year, or 120 percent of the player's previous year's salary

Two types of franchise tags:

"Exclusive Tag" - a player that is slapped with an Exclusive Franchise Tag must be offered a one year deal with a salary equal to or greater than the average of the top five salaries at the player's position as of the current year in which the tag will apply. Or 120 percent of the player's previous year's salary. Exclusive franchise players cannot negotiate with other teams.

"Non-Exclusive Tag" - a Non-Exclusive Tagged, player must be offered a one year deal with a salary equal to or greater than the average of the top five salaries at the player's position in the previous year, or 120 percent of the player's previous year's salary. A Non-Exclusive franchise player may negotiate with other NFL teams, but if he signs an offer sheet from another team, the original team has a right to match the deal, but if the team does not match, and let's the player go, they will receive two first-round draft picks as compensation.

Kind of. A big difference is that if a team doesn't match a new team's offer, the original team gets two first-rounders as compensation for losing their franchise player.

Also, the contract value is based on last year's salaries instead of this year's.

By the way, Dansby isn't the only non-exclusive tag. I believe all of the franchised players other than Andrews and Haynesworth are non-exclusive. That includes LJ.

Kind of. A big difference is that if a team doesn't match a new team's offer, the original team gets two first-rounders as compensation for losing their franchise player.

The draft picks are negotiable.  If a team wanted to go after LJ Smith, who obviously isn't worth 2 first round picks, could offer LJ a reasonable salary (that the Eagles could/would match) and say a 1st and a 3rd round pick to make the Eagles happy so that they don't match the offer.  So while the team would be getting LJ at a fair salary, they'd still be "over paying" with their draft picks.

The only way the 2 first round picks are mandatory is if the team with the tagged player refuses to take anything less.

Quote
By the way, Dansby isn't the only non-exclusive tag. I believe all of the franchised players other than Andrews and Haynesworth are non-exclusive. That includes LJ.

Off the top of my head, I can't recall many/any instances over the years were the exclusive tag was used.  I could really see a player getting pissed off about this one since the player doesn't even have the ability to attempt to find a team willing to pay the hefty price for him.

Only practically true, not technically - if the team accepts less, it is a trade - not free agency.

And it doesn't make sense for the team, because they get to pay the player less and there are basically no players who are worth 2 first round picks.

Well, duh.  A tagged player doesn't reach free agency.  That's the whole point of even having the tag in the first place.......to give teams a chance to retain their best players.

And when you slap the tag on a player, you're basically inviting the rest of the league to a sign and trade.

QuoteSHAUN GETTING THE SHAFT?

We're hearing multiple rumblings from our connections at the Scouting Combine that the Seahawks could be cutting running back Shaun Alexander soon.

A media source told us moments ago that the move could come "in the next couple of days."

It would be the last step in a dramatic fall from grace for running back the NFL's MVP in 2005. Once Alexander got rewarded with a big contract in 2006, his performance began to dip. In 2007, he was, as the league insider types say, "just a guy."

Alexander is under contract through 2013, with total remaining non-guaranteed base salaries of $43.1625 million.

Kennison had a nice year in 2005.  Too bad he has nothing left because he'd be a pretty decent fit with the Eagles.  At 6'1" and a shade over 200, he could do some damage as a possession receiver in his prime.

Chiefs released WR Eddie Kennison, ending his six season run with the team.

2001-2007 = seven years.

Christ, not only do you post shtein no one cares about but you don't even do it accurately.

Both of you are "wrong" he signed with the cheifs midway through 2001 after forcing the broncos to release him. So it was 6.5, which both of you would know if you would just follow your guidebook to posting here in semanticland.

Well technically, you're wrong too because Kennison only played 5 games in 2001 with the Chiefs which would make it 6.3125 years he spent with the Chiefs.

technically, it would be 6.3125 seasons not years. By this I mean NFL regular seasons, not the seasons of autumn, spring etc.

2. Jason Dunn is EXACTLY what this team needs. Not only so I could bust my Dunn jersey outta retirement, but because he's a great blocking TE. He could help WInston Justice block somebody next year.

Speaking of which;

better blocker....Winston Justice, a true OL - or Jason Dunn?

QuoteThe Cleveland Browns are poised to launch Plan B at quarterback.

B, for Brady, that is.

The club was unable to sign starter Derek Anderson to a three-year, $20 million contract - $10 million guaranteed - before Friday's 12:01 a.m. free agency deadline and are prepared to turn their high-powered offense over to Brady Quinn, a first-round pick from last year and fan favorite.

On Thursday, Browns general manager Phil Savage protected the club by tendering Anderson a one-year contract offer for $2.5 million in 2008. Anderson did not accept the deal, making him a restricted free agent and on the market.

The Browns would get first and third-round draft picks if Anderson signs elsewhere.

Per ESPN:
QuoteArmed with $44 million in salary cap room, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers spent very little time spending some of their rare bounty, reaching an early Friday morning contract agreement with unrestricted free agent center Jeff Faine, who played with the New Orleans Saints the past two years.

Contract details were not immediately available, but league sources said the deal will make Faine one of the NFL's highest paid centers and surpass the six-year, $36 million contract that another former New Orleans center LeCharles Bentley, signed with Cleveland as a free agent in 2006.

I think this deal is a good one for both sides.
Anderson gets $20 million to continue to fight for a starting position, and he gets out of his contract when he is 27 years old, perfect time to cash in.
Browns get a solid starter for next year. If Brady doesn't work out, they can try and resign Anderson .
If he does work out they can trade him with a year left on his deal and get a first day draft pick, while Anderson gets a new contract from his new team.

Pretty genius if you ask me.
But nobody did, so I'll shut up now.

The Jets just got Kris Jenkins for 2008 3rd and 5th-rd picks, then he signed a new deal for 5/$35M/$20M guaranteed

Parcells gets Jason Ferguson back from Dallas.....him + 2008 6th-rd pick to Miami for 6th-rd picks in 2008 and 2009

QuoteCOWBOYS CALLING ON BELL? by Michael David Smith

Although he doesn't represent quite the kind of "wow" Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has vowed to add to his offense, running back Tatum Bell may be coming to Dallas.

ESPN.com is reporting that Dallas is showing interest in Bell, an unrestricted free agent who spent 2007 with the Detroit Lions.

Bell never looked like a good fit with the Lions, finishing his one and only season in Detroit with 182 yards. But in 2006, Bell's only year as a starter, he ran for 1,025 yards with the Broncos, and his pure speed could make him just the kind of player Jones craves.

more moss stuff:

QuoteMOSS ON THE MARKET

Though free agency opened 19 hours ago, receiver Randy Moss is now officially on the market.

Per Adam Schefter of NFL Network and John Clayton of ESPN, Moss isn't close to a deal with the Patriots, and he is open to entertaining offers from other teams.

The questions now become:  (1) who is interested; and (2) how much will they offer?

Our take?  Moss wants to know what else is out there before accepting the Pats' best offer, if for no reason other than to know what he is sacrificing.  He's a guy with a reputation for being selfish and moody; what better way to improve his image than to walk away from a bigger offer and sticking with the Pats?

But the problem is that teams likely have vivid memories of his behavior in Oakland.  He was all smiles and "committed to excellence" and "I just wanna win, baby" when the trade from Minnesota went down, but before too long he was a malcontent.

Maybe it wasn't really his fault.  It's not as if the Raiders are the model professional sports franchise.  But it's a huge gamble to take if Moss expects $25 million or more in guaranteed money.

This one could get very interesting.  Especially if the Jets decide to visit the ultimate indignity upon the Pats by trying to swipe the guy who made an above average offense into a pinball machine.

And so concludes a month that has seen the pendulum swing as sharply as it ever has for any NFL team.  On January 31, the Patriots were awaiting their coronation.  With February 1 came the names Arlen Specter and Matt Walsh.  February 2 brought the report that the Pats cheated the Rams out of Super Bowl XXVI.  On February 3, 18-0 became 18-1.

Things haven't gotten much better since then.  The only thing we're sure of is that, in March, things surely can't get much worse.

Wilkins was a rather consistent fantasy stud too, though he had a bit of an off year (as did the entire team). I thought they would really miss him next year, but they won't miss him a bit if they are bringing in Brown.

The Detroit Free Press puts this trade in blunt terms: (http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080301/SPORTS01/803010320)

QuoteThis was nothing more than another Trash Day for this franchise. You don't negotiate terms for the pickup. You just leave your garbage at the curb at the designated time and wait for anybody to take it away.

The Cleveland Browns obliged, surrendering cornerback Leigh Bodden and a third-round draft choice for an overweight, part-time impact player nearing 400 pounds with withering cartilage in his knees and a slothful work ethic.

The funny aspect is how Lions fans are becoming very suspicious of Leigh Bodden now because they can't believe that a team would have given them a decent player for Rogers.

The Grand Rapids Press was equally blunt: (http://www.mlive.com/lions/index.ssf/2008/03/lions_rid_of_problem_child_rog.html)

QuoteYou find a cancer in the locker room, you get rid of it.

Anyone who spent even a few minutes inside Detroit's miserable locker room during the six-game losing streak in the second half of last season will tell you Rogers had become a malignant growth that had to be removed.

Good riddance.

I wouldn't have minded Stallworth back here. I've been hoping the Eagles would add a WR through free agency rather than a trade or the draft.

That would put them in a great position. Imagine if they get could get a second rounder for Lito on top of that.  The draft, and off season in general would have alot of potential. If they could get a second for Lito, they would also be in a position to move up in the first round, maybe get a Kenny Phillips and still get a good OT prospect in the second round. Or they could stay pat and package 2 second rounders to get back into the first - maybe get something like a stud LB and a good OT in the 1st round.

Vikings, Eagles rule roost of salary-cap manipulation
Posted: Saturday March 1, 2008 2:09AM; Updated: Saturday March 1, 2008 11:48PM

It's a regulation buried deep in the NFL's Collective Bargaining Agreement, a regulation so obscure it doesn't even have a name.Other than Article XXIV, Section 7, section ii, paragraph c, part (iii).

Here's what it says:

At the end of a season, if performance bonuses previously included in a Team's Team Salary but not actually earned exceed performance bonuses actually earned but not previously included in Team Salary, an amount shall be added to the Team's Salary Cap for the next League Year equaling the amount, if any, by which such overage exceeds the Team's Room under the Salary Cap at the end of a season.

This dizzylingy obtuse regulation is unwittingly having a profound effect on the NFL's economic landscape.

The level playing field the NFL's salary cap supposedly created?

It's a myth.

Because of a variety of complicated tricks that savvy NFL team officials have figured out, teams can manipulate their salary cap to the point where their cap figure winds up millions of dollars higher than the teams they're competing with.

The Vikings and Lions are both in the NFC North. Both have unadjusted cap figures of $116,729,000, like all 32 NFL teams.

Yet the Vikings' 2008 cap figure exceeds $135 million, and the Lions' adjusted figure is more than $111 million.

So the Vikings this offseason will have $20 million more than one of their division rivals to pay free agents and re-sign their own players. That's an 18 percent difference, and it demonstrates just how much of a difference shrewd cap management can make.

The NFL salary cap is a fluid number. Although the unadjusted cap number for all 32 teams is identical, the real numbers actually vary greatly.

Here's why.

Teams need room to make room. The way the NFL's Collective Bargaining Agreement works, the more flexibility a team has, the easier it is to gain future flexibility. So teams that find themselves in cap trouble are often stuck there for years. And teams that stay out of cap trouble can tweak contracts in certain ways that generate huge cap advantages in later years.

That's where the above CBA trick comes into play.

Teams with significant cap space late in a season can manipulate the following year's cap by writing likely-to-be-earned incentive bonuses into contracts that, in reality, have zero chance of being earned.

Such incentives count against a team's cap the year they're written, but if they're not met -- and teams have ways of making sure they're not met -- the team is then credited the amount of the bonuses against the following year's cap.According to figures distributed to each NFL team this week, 24 of the 32 NFL teams were given upward cap adjustments for 2008, six teams were given downward cap adjustments (thanks to conventional incentives that were met) and two teams had no adjustments.

Of the 24 teams that gained more room under the cap, seven tacked on at least $10 million, a group led by the Vikings ($18,432,577), Eagles ($14,087,449), Buccaneers ($13,306,634), Bills ($12,713,009) and Browns ($12,633,503).

Not coincidentally, the Eagles, Vikings, Bills and Browns all made a splash on the first day of free agency.

The Vikings signed safety Madieu Williams to a six-year, $33 million contract; the Eagles signed Asante Samuel to a six-year, $57 million deal, the Bills acquired linebacker Kawika Mitchell and signed him to a five-year, $17.5 million deal; and the Browns traded for defensive tackle Corey Williams and gave him a deal including nearly $20 in guaranteed components.

What team lost the most money via cap adjustments? The Lions. They have the lowest adjusted cap in the league in 2008 -- their $111,380,935 figure actually coming out $5,348,065 below the unadjusted cap figure.

Does that surprise anybody?

BEN BREAKS THE BANK

A source with knowledge of the new contract to be signed by Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger tells us that Roethlisberger will receive a practical guarantee of $38.7 million.

Ho.  Lee.  Crap.

It's a staggering amount of any team to pay in guaranteed money, and it's almost incomprehensible that the Steelers would do it.

Technically, the guaranteed money is in the range of $36 million.  But it's arguably fair to include the first-year salary and a non-guaranteed roster bonus due at the outset of the 2009 league year, especially since portions of the second-year and third-year base salaries are guaranteed.

The deal is a six-year extension of the two years remaining on Roethlisberger's rookie deal.  He is now under contract through 2015.

MOSS DEAL DONE

A league source tells us that the Patriots and receiver Randy Moss have agreed to a new contract.  Per the source, the deal is for three years, $27 million.

The contract hasn't been signed, and the language is being finalized.

It's unknown how much of the deal is guaranteed, signing bonus, etc.

BUCS GO BACK TO COLLECTING QUARTERBACKS

With the Buccaneers having multiple millions in cap room available, they've only signed a handful of free agents.

Their latest development?  Trading for a quarterback.

Per Adam Schefter of NFL Network, the Bucs have acquired quarterback Brian Griese from the Bears in a trade.  For Griese, it's a return to the place where he spent two seasons, 2004 and 2005.  The Bucs opted not to pay him a $2.6 million roster bonus in early 2006, and instead released him.

Griese is signed through 2010, and he's due to earn a base salary of $1.4 million this season.  He also was due to earn a $300,000 roster bonus fairly soon.  Perhaps as soon as mañana.

If Davis awarding Walker that absurd contract didn't kill our hopes that the Eagles will pursue a legitimate #1, this will:

What fans seem to really want to know is whether this portends a continued search for receiving help. Reid said it didn't.

According to the Nashville Tennessean, Kearse has agreed to terms with the Titans.

PFT has learned that it's a two-year, $6 million deal, with a $1.3 million signing bonus.  He'll earn a total of $3 million in the first year.

Kearse starred for the Titans as a rookie in 1999, but injuries hampered him thereafter.  He had flashes of high ability with the Eagles, but never lived up to the huge financial investment that the team made into him.

Dolphins: Parcells to trade Taylor?
The News
Contrary to recent reports, Bill Parcells is looking to unload defensive end Jason Taylor, according to Pro Football Weekly. This report cites a team insider, who also stated the feeling is mutual, as Jason Taylor wants out of Miami. Parcells recently stated that Taylor would either play for Miami next season or retire, but according to the inside source he's just trying to avoid the criticism of purging the team of one of its most popular players.
Our View
It appears possible that the organization could trade Taylor if the price is right. Taylor should have a couple of good seasons left in the tank, and rumors circulating suggest he could be traded for a pair of draft picks, with second- and fourth-round selections appearing to be a plausible exchange.

The phone will be ringing off the hook around the league for this guy if this is true..no question. Shtein, if Strahan can knock off 9 sacks at 36, Taylor would be a beast for a couple more years...for the right team

Id love to get excited about any pro-bowl DE on the market, but you know damn well the Eagles will not give up their draft picks for a 33 year old anything. They will sign a 1 yr, but never give up the "future" for aging players--no matter their status

I dont think its bitching, its just the way they operate with their draft picks. Parcells is going to want draft picks to build that team. The Eagles are built around a the draft mentality, and I dont blame them. Now, if they can just find someone that can "consistently" evaluate solid talent, their mentality would hold true

I personally, at this stage in the game with the window about to close for a Superbowl win, would snag Taylor in a heartbeat--but the Eagles have the better business model and like to look long term--so what are we supposed to think?

Jackson was a top-5 running back in the NFL in 2006.

"Amazing" isn't a word I'd use to describe him, though.  Excellent running back but basically he's just a big motherfarger with speed enough to burn you and power enough to farg up your day.

Why? Alexander has been terrible ever since he lost his offensive line and cracked his foot. He started off great last year, then hurt his wrist or something playing with a cast. Regardless of his stats the past 2 years, he would be a serviceable back-up to Westbrook and the Eagles run line-- and better than Buckhalter

Eiither way, both players are 1 cut away from extinction

Quote49ers BID FAREWELL TO DARRELL
Posted by Mike Florio on March 15, 2008, 7:57 a.m.
After adding receivers Isaac Bruce and Bryant Johnson since the start of free agency on February 29, the 49ers have opted to trim from the roster veteran wideout Darrell Jackson, reports Adam Schefter of NFL Network.

Jackson was traded to San Fran in 2007 from the Seahawks for a fourth-round draft pick. Through the 2004 season he was developing into a high-end receiver, but knee problems limited him significantly in 2005. He was able to participate in 13 games in 2006, but the addition of Nate Burleson and Deion Branch made him expendable.

With the 49ers, he started 15 games and caught 46 passes for 497 yards and three touchdowns.

It's unknown whether Jackson has anything left, but teams that run the West Coast offense will likely have an interest. The most likely destinations include the Vikings, Bucs, Eagles, and taterskins.
