Major news: CBS and NBC will simulcast the NFL Network feed on Saturday night. It's the first 3-station simulcast in NFL history and the first simulcast since Super Bowl I.

I didn't expect this at all, but it's a good deal for the NFL. The only problem is that once viewers hear Gumbel they're going to decide they don't want the NFL Network.
you mean to tell me the nfl and the big networks put the stupid bickering aside and did whats best for the fans? farg me.
i wouldnt say the nfl network put anything aside...this is brilliant on their part...now they get free advertising of their channel on two network stations at one time...its a no brainer for them
what they want is to be on regular cable and this isnt going to make cable companies put the channel on basic. the nfl caved and gave the game to everyone. perhaps there could be an outpouring of demand from the channel, but it's doubtful.

Bingo.
it's brilliant up until the part where the entire nation gets to hear Bryant Gumbel do play by play for a football game, then not so much

Exactly. It's not exactly going to be great advertising.
He is easily the worst I have ever heard doing national games. You can tell he has some silly little meaningless stat written down on a sheet of paper, then he mentions it 5 times a game, and then when it finally happens he shouts it out like he's giving listeners all of this knowledge. what a joke.
I cant wait for the entire country to start ripping him
I can't wait for the Patriots to lose.
outside of football geeks like us no one really cares about announcers and dont pay much attention to them...especially the new type customer that nfl net is trying to attract with this move...in fact a lot of these people like my mom for example will like bryant gumbel because she loved him on the today show and not even realize how bad of an announcer he is
and truth be told i actually like listening to the guy...hes so bad hes good...its entertaining to listen to him...id rather hear him than the annoying pompous joe buck
Definitely agree with you IGY its entertaining how bad he is and brings a different element to blowouts
How the hell did Bryant Gumble start doing sports anyway? Dude used to host the TODAY show for christ's sake! I know it's been quite some time since he did that and then he moved over to HBO and started doing Real Sports but how did he get into commentating? Anyone know?
he did sports well before the today show noob
Pretty sure he started out as a sportscaster.
EDIT: Well there you go.... IGY beat me to it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bryant_Gumbel
Gumbel began his television career in October 1972, when he was made a sportscaster for KNBC-TV out of Los Angeles.
NBC Sports
Gumbel impressed and surprised NBC with his likable on-air presence and well-spoken, articulate commentary. He was hired by NBC Sports in the fall of 1975 as co-host of its National Football League pre-game show GrandStand with Jack Buck.
From 1975 until January 1982 (when he left to do The Today Show) Gumbel hosted numerous sporting events for NBC including Major League Baseball, NCAA basketball and the National Football League. Gumbel returned to sportscasting for NBC when he hosted the prime time coverage of the 1988 Summer Olympics from Seoul and the PGA Tour in 1990.
One of Gumbel's more memorable moments during his time at NBC Sports occurred in 1982, when he was on site for the now legendary "Epic in Miami" NFL playoff game between the San Diego Chargers and Miami Dolphins. At the end of the game, Gumbel told the viewing audience "If you didn't like this football game then you didn't like football!"
All of this is fascinating.
he started as a sportscaster...which makes it even more embarrassing that he sucks so much now

thats because hes doing play by play now...he used to strictly do program hosting
i grew up on him doing the nbc nfl pregame and musburger doing the cbs version...both were fantastic...in fact everything gumbel has ever done except play by play has been great...
gumbel was wearing a green sweater in the new real sports episode. i think igy may be blacker than him.
NFL caved. Congress is breathing down their necks about monopoly and the cable companies and so long as they charge the cable companies 70 cents per subscriber who gets NFL Network, there's no way Cable is going to dump the channel into it's base packages.
The NFL is going to lose this struggle in the end.

except doesnt virtually every cable and satelitte provider except comcast do just that
additionally comcast at one point had it on their basic package and removed it because of directtv and the nfl's exclusive relationship re: the nfl package
at least thats my understanding but im far from an expert on this type of stuff

Nope. Cox and Comcast ghettoize it in a sports tier. Time Warner, Cablevision, Charter, Bright House, Suddenlink, and Mediacom don't have the NFL Network at all. Those are the eight largest cable providers in the US.
woohooo seven hours of pregame ::)
dear mercury morris-
please stfu...go away...get a farging life and get the hell off my TV....
sincerely,
igy
There was a full page advertisement in USA Today from the NFL attacking "big cable" for not providing the country with the NFL Network. The gist of the advertisement was that the cable industry was being selfish for not offering the network to as many people as possible and that was the main impetus behind the NFL simulcasting the game on CBS & NBC.
Apparently the NFL doesn't understand the concept of irony considering they provide their pay per view package exclusively to DirecTv.
I wish I could find the advertisement and post it here. The brazenness of it is something to behold.
yeah but romey dont you think theres a big difference btwn a full season pay per view package and a single prime time week 17 game
Obviously. Still, the fact that the NFL has the stones to complain about the cable industry not carrying their useless network while at the same time not allowing those same networks the opportunity to carry the Sunday Ticket is a hilarious expression of arrogance and hubris.
Romey, you realize it was a bidding process for the NFL Ticket. They opened it up to all bidders, and DTV paid out the ass for it. Your point is flawed
Fine play by Eli so far..now leading 7 to nothing.
They're pimping the NFL Network hard during this game.
Not a bad game thought ....just can't decide who I want to win...does a tie = an undefeated season with a *
I want the Giants to win, but both teams to suffer major injuries
i wouldn't want the Giants to win a game against a group of convicted pedofiles if the prize at the end was the adoption rights to my kids
Well, they are going to lose anyway, because they farging suck and ShEli choked like a bitch on mandingo
There are no words to describe how badly I want the Patriots to get blown out in the first round of the playoffs. Initially I was enjoying watching them destroy teams with such precision. Now I want them to die. Tough.
Giants dicking around out there and draining massive amounts of time off the clock while down by two scores... looking a lot like the Eagles in the Super Bowl.
all the more fun when the colts beat them in three weeks
1. Congrats to the Pats. The real Gold Standard.
2. I hope they go all the way.
3. I only wish that they played in the NFC so that they could destroy Dallas and Washington in the same postseason.
I hope you die of malnourishment.

Oh yeah? Your ass is flawed.
I wanted to see them go 16-0 just as much as I wanted to see the Dolphins go 0-16.
Now I'd like to see them lose in the playoffs.
But if they don't; seeing them rape the iceholes of Romo, Owens and that clown Wade Phillips in the SB will be fun. Assuming Dallas makes it to the SB.
I think I have to root for Seattle to make it.
I hate Dallas
I hate Favre (can you imagine the 2 weeks of media coverage of the 18-0 Pats AND Favre??)
I hate Tampa (although Five Fo is there now)
I hate Washington
I hate New York
ABC in the playoffs. Anybody But Cowboys.
If any NFC East team even makes the Super Bowl, I'll be pissed.
anyone notice how clueless eli was when he was trying to call a timeout right before halftime? he's such a waste i love it.
yeah, I did notice that. he was Hoydafooting around whether or not to actually make the T with his two hands, holding them just apart and wavering back and forth about it...until he saw that someone else had actually called it
UNSTOPPABLE
He was like the douchebags on The Price Is Right who are looking to the audience trying to find the people they showed up with to see how much they should bid.
ha, nice analogy.
looks like Brady in coming in for the Browns.
edwards just dropped a td that hit him in the hands. did anderson get hurt? i can't imagine cleveland pulling him with only a 7 pt lead in the first half.
the saints, who are still fighting for a playoff spot, decided to punt the ball to devon hester. yeah.

Anderson is back - he'd hurt his hand following through on a pass and it went off a defenders helmet.
Andre Davis has a 97 yard and 104 yard KR for TDs for the Texans today.
i made a comment about that in the observation thread because the eagles obviously could use a bonafide returner.
ha....the Eagles finished with a better record than the Bears and Saints. Stupid NFC.
Miami finished 1-15
Houston finished 8-8....their first non-losing season ever

Blah blah blah integerity, wanting to get 10 wins, etc...but Cleveland's game was completely pointless. Whether they won or lost, their getting into the playoffs depends solely on whether the Tits win or lose.
Carolina managed to win 7 of the most boring games in NFL history this year.
portis scored. roy williams missed a tackle. wash up 7-0

Totally discounting the possibility of a tie tonight, eh?
Yes.
Vinny goes out a winner (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/recap?gameId=271230027)

I'm sure there will be many "mutual decisions" around the league this week. Always a fun time of year. :evil
Early odds:
San Diego -7 (no O/U yet)
Seattle -4 (O/U 40)
Tampa Bay -3 (O/U 39.5)
Jacksonville -1 (O/U 37.5)
No losing seasons in the NFC East or AFC South.
and all of the wildcards came from those divisions
