IGY has talked a lot about Val Kilmer as Doc Holiday and every time he does it reminds me of my favorite movie characters.
So, inspired by this post (and others), who are your favorite characters in movie history?
To use Star Wars as an example, I'm looking the Bobba Fetts and Han Solos of cinema, not the Darth Vaders and Luke Skywalkers...

ive mentioned this on the 'movie thread lately' before but val kilmer doc holiday is on the shot list of best movie roles ever
along with
bud white la confidential
and
mouse alexander devil with a blue dress
(I'll add my list soon but thought I'd start this shtein now while I was thinking about it...)
good thread
this list begins and ends with mickey rourke johnny angel in angel heart
my urge to mock you is conflicted with my urge to actually think about this

There are tons, obviously but the first one that springs to mind is Mr. Blonde (Michael Madsen) in Reservoir Dogs.
The scene where he cuts the cop's ear off is hilarious, nauseating and terrifying all at once. Great scene and a great character from one of the best movies ever.
Great topic.
Sly Stallone in Rocky
mr blonde was a gay
cuttin a doods ear off while hes tied up = bitch
mario cobretti on the other hand = pimp
Christopher Walken - Vincenzo Coccotti in True Romance
Joe Pesci - in any of Scorsese movie

I'm half in the bag, and will have to think about this one more, but one of the first that popped in my head was Matt Modine in Full Metal Jacket.
I have to agree with Igy on the Val Kilmer/Doc Holliday tip. Dude was ice cold.
Staying with Westerns, Clint Eastwood in Unforgiven was a bad shutyomouth. Hackman was pretty good too.
Edited with the actual quotes:
QuoteLittle Bill Daggett: Well, sir, you are a cowardly son of a bitch! You just shot an unarmed man!
Will Munny: Well, he should have armed himself if he's going to decorate his saloon with my friend.
QuoteLittle Bill Daggett: You'd be William Munny out of Missouri. Killer of women and children.
Will Munny: That's right. I've killed women and children. I've killed just about everything that walks or crawled at one time or another. And I'm here to kill you, Little Bill, for what you did to Ned.
QuoteWill Munny: All right, I'm coming out. Any man I see out there, I'm gonna shoot him. Any sumbitch takes a shot at me, I'm not only gonna kill him, but I'm gonna kill his wife, all his friends, and burn his damn house down.
I'd have to think a while to see what comes to me as far as favorite charecters go but because Full Metal Jacket was already mentioned the drill sargent makes that freaking movie. The first half of that movie is gold.
I think one of the best charecters to carry a franchise has to be Indiana Jones. I hope the new one they're making doesn't suck.
I like a crazy Jack Nicholsen charecter like his role in the Shining or One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
Andy from Shawshank Redemption. Or maybe it's just a great movie I'm attached too.
Of course Sherrif Buford T. Justice is crazy funny from Smokey and the Bandit but that's a guilty pleasure of mine.
Scarface. Say Hello to my Little Friend is crazily over quoted.
Adam West as Batman.... Awesome!
That's all I can think of right now...
The one the first comes to mind to me is James Bond - particularly Sean Connery's portrayal (though I really enjoyed Daniel Craig's first run).
But I'm a James Bond nerd like SD is with Star Wars.
Mickey Rourke as Marv from Sin City

First three off the top of my head. I'll think of more.
Sam Elliot as SGM Plumley in We Were Soldiers.
Will Ferrell in Talladega Nights. Funniest movie evar!1!!11!!22!232
Jesus. In any movie.
Quote from: SunMo on August 05, 2007, 10:49:35 PMChristopher Walken - Vincenzo Coccotti in True Romance
Oh, agreed.
Dustin Hoffman as Ratso in Midnight Cowboy.
I'm going to be recycling some but here are the ones I can think of off the top of my head...
- Kilmer as Holiday. If this isn't my favorite, it's definitely top 5.
- Mickey Rourke as Marv in Sin City also gets a vote from me (getting the recycled ones out of the way early).
- John Goodman as Walter in The Big Lebowski. John Turturo as The Jesus would also be further down my list.
- Dennis Hopper as Clifford Worley in True Romance. Again, there are several characters here that I would consider. Slater, Arquette and Walken all are outstanding but Hopper steals the entire movie.
- Sonny Landham as Billy in Predator.
- Sigourney Weaver as Ripley in Alien and Aliens. In fact, I think she might be #1 on my list.
- Peter Stormare as Satan in Constantine. This isn't a great movie, but Stormare plays such a great Satan that it's worth watching just for the 5 or 6 minutes that he's in it. Stormare also gets props for playing Karl Hungus, Nihilist/Porn Star, in The Big Lebowski.

Don't leave Gary Oldman off that list..his short turn at the beginning of the movie is magnificent.
Ah! farg you're right. Gary Oldman as Drexl was amazing. In fact, Oldman is one of my favorite actors and I'd add at least one other of his characters to my list. Stansfeld in The Professional.
I think we all can agree that Val Kilmer in Tombstone is one of the all time best movie performances.
Also Daniel Day-Lewis as William Cutting in Gangs of New York.
Lester Burnham (Kevin Spacey) in American Beauty.
Robert Shaw as Quint in "Jaws".
Tommy Lee Jones - As Marshal Samuel Gerard (The Fugitive) and warden Dwight McClusky (Natural Born Killers)
Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro, Jon Voight - all in "Heat"
Ed Harris - Seth Frank (Absolute power)
Jeremy Irons - Simon Gruber (Die Hard with a vengeance)
Woody Harrelson - Mickey Knox (Natural born killers)

-- When I saw this thread title... that's one of the 1st I thought about. He was great in that role.
-- I also gotta back IGY again with Don Cheadle as Mouse in Devil in a Blue Dress.
-- Sam Jackson as Jules Winfield in Pulp Fiction. Special shoutout to Harvey Keitel as The Wolf as well.
-- rjs tapped Billy in Predator... but I've got to give the nod to Jesse Ventura as Blaine. "I ain't got time to bleed" may be the best line ever.
-- Alan Rickman as Hans Gruber in Die-Hard. Maybe the best villan ever in an action movie.

Oldman was good in that movie (known in most of the rest of the world as 'Leon', its original title), but I have to say I liked Portman and Reno better.
I guess "Rome" would qualify as a series.... but still:
James Purefoy (Marc Anthony), Simon Woods (Octavian/Augustus), Kerry Condon (Octavia) were good as well.... despite the liberties that the wroters have taken, they might be quite close in character to what the historical persons might have been....

- I laid off of Samuel L because it seemed too obvious, but he deserves mention.
- Billy edged out Blaine for me because he's less clownish, but yeah Ventura rules in Predator.
- Good call on Rickman.

Agreed on both :yay
Jack "Big Trouble in Little China" Burton.
A couple more:
Lloyd Dobbler (John Cusack)
Sam (Natalie Portman in Garden State)
Keiser Sose (Spacey in Usual Suspects)
Jeff Spicoli (Fast Times at Ridgemont High)
Carl (Buschemi in Fargo)
chunk from the goonies
One word:
Ash.
Ash goes without saying.
Irwin M. Fletcher also is an automatic.
Matthew McConahey (sp?) as Wooderson in Dazed and Confused.
William H. Macy as Bernie Lootz (The Cooler)
James Woods as Lester Diamond (Casino)
Ed Norton - Skinhead in American History X
(http://img.tesco.com/pi/entertainment/DVD/LF/689042_DV_L_F.jpg)
Keven Peter Hall as "Harry"
In no particular order:
DeNiro is Raging Bull
Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man
Joaquin Phoenix in Walk The Line
Kevin Costner in Wyatt Earp
Robin Williams in Good Will Hunting
Denzel Washington in Malcom X
Matthew Broderick in Glory
Malcom McDowell in A Clockwork Orange
Jeff Bridges in The Big Lebowski
Christopher Walken in The Deer Hunter
Anthony Hopkins in The Silence of the Lambs
Paul Newman in The Hustler
Gene Wilder in Young Frankenstein
Ben Kingsley in Schindler's List
Adrian Brody in The Pianist

Quite a list.
BTW...this is about favorite characters, right?
Brick Top - Snatch
Tyler Durden - Brad Pitt - Fight Club
Ed, from Shaun of the Dead
Multiple Miggs, Silence of the Lambs
Ah yes, Mickey the Piker from Snatch would probably be on my list as well as Rory Breaker from Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.
Cal from The 40 Year Old Virgin
Walter Sobchak from The Big Lebowski
Ernie McCracken from Kingpin
Nick Nolte as Phil Elliott in North Dallas Forty. He basically spent the entire movie drunk and high while at the same time giving the owner and coaches of the "Cowboys" the finger not to mention he farged the girlfriend of the owner's brother too.
Awesome.
i love characters lol
Nick Naylor--- Aaron Eckhart in Thank you for Smoking

i like the giant penguin from billy madison a lot.
Ed Harris - Blair Sullivan - "Just Cause"
Claude Raines as Inspector Renault in Casablanca. Some of the greatest dialogue ever written.
If we're talking Jack Nicholson, I always thought his best role was the devil in The Witches of Eastwick. The movie sucked dead mule dick, but that soliloquy in the church at the end was a farging riot.
Alec Baldwin in Glengarry Glen Ross. "You see this watch? This watch costs more than your car." Come to think of it, everyone in that movie was awesome.
EDIT: Almost forgot one. Kathy Bates in Misery. When she got brained at the end, the entire theater I was in, and I mean to a person, jumped up and cheered. I saw her on Arsenio Hall about a month after I watched the movie, and got angry seeing her walk out. Now THAT'S a performance.
Quint - Jaws famous scene (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=USnM-ee06pg)
Master Chief Billy Sunday (Dinero) Men of Honor
Colonel Jesep - (Nicholson) A Few Good Men
Chris Knight - (Kilmer) Real Genius
Gaylord Focker - (Stiller) Meet the Parents
Trent - (Vaughn) Swingers
Frank the Tank - (Ferrell) Old School

Badass roles:
Denzel in Man on Fire as Creasy
Tom Cruise as Vincent in Collateral
Jason Statham as Frank from the Transporter
Tom Cruise in The Last Samurai
Drama roles:
Morgan Freeman as Red in The Shawshank Redemption
Ed Norton as Derrick in American History X
