Title: Beer Drinkers Challenge
Post by: Father Demon on May 06, 2007, 04:02:28 PM
To follow up on the beer thread.

The goal is to drink 214 DIFFERENT beers between June 1st and De3cember 31st.  On average, that's a different beer every day.  Acouple of ground rules:

1) It's the honor system.  But if you can't trust a bunch of internet geeks that you never met before and probably never will, who can you trust?
2) It has to be at least a 12 ounce serving in a single setting to count.  So that day you try 35 different samples at the local beer fest won't count.
3) Different varieties of the same brand count.  So, Bud, Bud Light, Bud Dry, Bud Select, Bud Ice and Bud Ice dry would be 6 points towards the 214 point goal.
4) Whoever plays will just keep updating their list in this thread after every day you drink a new beer.  Or whatever.  It's just less messy to keep one running score sheet rather than continuing to post 2 or 3 beers at a time
5) If you want to add commentary -- "I had a Keystone Ice, and it sucked just like I thought it would" is a good commentary.  Also, if you find non-run of the mill beers (and you will if you are getting up in the 100's), a comment on where it's from and the brewery if you remember - "I had an Orion, from the Orion Brewery in Okinawa Japan" would help those that want to sample some nice suds.

That's it.

Who's up for the challenge?

I'm in.

I'm guessing that over that span of time I'll have roughly 936 miller lites (36 per week), 260 Sam Adams/ Sam Lights, 104 Guinnesses and 52 Hoegaardens. Along with several dozen Jack and Gingers, Bloody Marys, mimosas and other assorted breakfast drinks.

There will be very little room for any beers residing outside of this rigorous schedule.

Having said that, I'm in.

I'm not exactly beanstalk skinny, but I like having a waist size less than 40.  Also, as has been noted many times, I like money... and trying a different brand of beer every day for 7 months is simply not in the cards.

I will, however, promise to drink no less than 216 cans of Bud Select in that time frame.  Holla.

Generally in PA, you have to buy cases....or in the random places that sell six packs...thats at least $1070, or at most $5000

I am so out.

You guys suck.

I can buy sampler six packs of a lot of different beers here.  And when I can't, I can usually trade one of mine for a new variety when in a social gathering.

It's too much recordkeeping, expense, and effort just to drink a lot of beer.

I'll tell you what - the next times I order a beer at a restaurant or bar, I'll try some new shtein.  I can't promise if I'll remember the name of it, but I will.  I will NOT, however, try anywhere near 214 different beers in one year, fatty.

rjs loves Miller Lite too much to successfully complete it or to remember the names of all 214 beers.  He will crash and burn, or he will have to drink 150 different brands over the holidays.

Nice try "shaming" us into your stupid game, but... no.

Hey - ghoulpool's genius.  This game?  Not so much.  But 1 for 2 isn't so bad.

OK, I said I was in so here is my progress report for the first 36 hours of the challenge:

1. Miller Lite: tastes great, not filling, got me drunk.
2. Pabst Blue Ribbon: the local pub just switched from Miller Lite to PBR so I'll be drinking much more of this going forward. Consistent. Inoffensive. Produces no hangover. HUMONGOUS mud butt the following day.
3. Sierra Nevada India Pale Ale: It's farging India Nevada India Pale Ale. You've had it. It's tasty. Nothing to write home about.
4. Leinenkugel Sunset Wheat: Crap. A light wheat beer that could have been acceptable except for the second rate blueberry taste and Lysol aftertaste.
5. Victory Prima Pils: Completely drinkable but really just tastes like Miller Lite. Mild, delicious but more expensive than Miller Lite so no reason to ever buy it.
6. Victory Golden Monkey: 9.5% alcohol. And you can taste it. It almost tastes like a good Belgian beer, but the extra alcohol adds a little bit of a barley wine taste to it. Wouldn't drink more than one or two at a clip for taste. For drunk would drink several.
7. Duvel: If you like Belgian beer, this is one of several that should be part of your standard fare. Light, delicious and easily drinkable but with plenty of flavor.

For whatever reason, I've been drinking more beer than usual lately so I'm going to give this a go just to see how close I get.  These first few go back over the last 2 weeks or so.

1.  Boulevard Wheat - Best beer ever.
2.  Miller Light - Good taste and cheap.
3.  Bud Light - Great to drink if you're the designated driver as this beer has 0 chance of ever getting you drunk.  It's also great to keep you hydrated if you plan on running a marathon or something.
4.  Blue Moon - If you've had it, you know.  If not, try it.  Awesome beer.
5.  Yuengling - Perhaps blasphemous since I'm from PA but it's just ok to me.
6.  Icehouse - Better than average.
7.  Red Stripe - With a shot of Capt Morgan on top, of course.

And an update...

8. Harpoon IPA: Honestly, most IPAs taste the same to me. They aren't my favorite and I don't like drinking a lot of them at once, but a couple at a time is just about right.
9. Redhook ESB: I don't even know what ESB stands for, but it's $2 a bottle at my bar. So it gets the tonsil treatment.
10. Sam Adams Summer Ale: So Sam Adams beers have a lot of flavor, which makes them enjoyable to drink with a meal and less enjoyable to drink en mass. Anyway, most of the Sam Seasonal flavors are shtein, but Sam Summer is pretty drinkable.

Not as thorough as RJS's list but:
Miller Lite: Shouldnt Count, it's my everyday beer.
Dogfish Head 90 minute Imperial IPA: Expensive, runs about 8.50 for a 4 pack.  Its 9% alcohol, i'm no lightweight but it definitely hits ya.  Smooth taste for such a high alcohol content on IPA.  I would highly recommend this beer.
Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA:  really a step below the 90 Imperial Ipa in both taste and Price.  6% alcohol content, again smooth taste, but a little bite.

I'm off to a slow start since the Wal-Mart's in Ocean Isle Beach NC have a crappy-ass beer selection.

1. Bud Ultra. Sucks.  But it's what my wife bought our first day here because it "is cheap".
2. Bud Light. Again.  It's better that the Ultra, but it's still not what I like to drink on a regular basis.
3. Michelob.  Best of the AB brands so far.
4. Yuengling Black & Tan.  Ahh..  here we go.  A nice porter with an "aged" taste to it.
5. Yuengling Lager. Nothing special for you East Coasters, but for us midwesterners, it's a good beer.  And impossible to find out where I live.

11. Red Stripe. The further removed from my college days I get, the less I like Lagers. (Miller Lite and the other light nonsense shtein that I jokingly tout as fantastic don't count. They're basically alcoholic water.)

ESB = Extra Special Bitter - a very British concoction where they overhop the beer.  I like it, but it's not for everyone.  For bitter, I prefer Sam Adams Scottish Ale.

1. Guinness: A great beer. Serve it warm, serve it cold, serve it in a can or out a tap. This beer never fails. While some think it's "heavy or filling", it's actually not at all. Very creamy and easy to drink. You can pound Guinness after Guinness and feel like running to the next bar with no problem. Grab a shot glass and pour half Baily's Irish Cream and half Jameson Irish Whiskey and fill a pint glass with half Guinness. Drop the shot into the beer and chug fast, no sipping. Tastes like a milk shake and kicks like an mule. Irish Car Bomb is this drink. Any beer that can be combo'd with Irish Whiskey is alright in my book.

Do "home brews" count for this challenge or does it have to be a name brand beer?  A buddy of mine made some the other day and I tried it last night.  I would never recommend this beer touching anyone's lips ever again as it tasted like Rosie O'Donnell's fermented colon dipped in hot sauce.

6. Southpaw Light. From the makers of Icehouse and red Dog, it was surprisingly good.  Although I like Red Dog.  This was pretty hoppy, for a macro beer and a light to boot.
7. Michelob Light.

The outer banks farging suck.  Full of people like FF.  Ocean City South, basically.  Unless you head down to the national park which has so far avoided being turned into a strip mall for pretend richies.

On topic, I been drinking Yuengling and nothing else for several weeks.  Cheap and tasty\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

8. AB's Beach Bum Blonde Ale.  Pretty tasty.  I'm pretty much a \fan of AB's seasonals they've been bringing out, even if I'm not much of a fan of AB in general (the same with all tghe biggies -- not just them)
9. Corona Extra.
10. Michelob Honey Lager.  Strong honey taste -- maybe a little too strong.
11. Landshark. Jimmy Buffet's beer distributed my AB.  It tastes a whole lot like Bud Light, and I was expecting better.

basically, I agree with you.  I'm not a fan of that thread either.

one obvious difference though is that people say more and have more to argue about in the movie thread.  some douchebag says five or six things about a movie, the other douchebags argue three or four of those things.

in this thread, some douchebag says he drank Bud Light and calls it unremarkable.

13.  Bavarian.  A Holland beer.  But it tasted like a light beer, which it wasn't. I won't drink it again.
14. Fosters. We all know what that tastes like.
15. Rolling Rock.  Remarkably, unchanged since AB bought them.

Gordon Biersch Marzen - (San Jose local "Oktoberfest" style brew)
Pacifico

I guess I was in mostly a Mexican beer mood today.

I still refuse to keep count, but I am trying new beers, for whatever reason.  It's probably that I get to drink delicious beer and annoy IGY/Dio by cataloguing it here.

Luxembourg has very high rates because they have very low prices for alcohol, bringing a lot of business from the sourrounding  countries, according to the article from which I pulled that graphic.

It's funny what you can learn from reading this forum.  I did a search on Luxembourg and found out the following:

1. Luxembourg possesses the highest GDP per capita.

2. Most Luxembourgers are multilingual.  In fact, their own dialect is taught during the first three years of school followed by French & German.  To graduate with a certificate (diploma) a student has to pass proficiency tests in all three languages.  Also - many of the citizens of Luxembourg are also fluent in English, although it's not an officially sanctioned language.

3. 97% of Luxembourgers are Roman Catholic.

4. Magic Hat #9 - easy to drink ale. it has a taste i can't describe. kinda like jizz when it hits your throat.

17. Schlafly's Pale Ale.
18. Schlafly's Summer Kölsch.

All from the St. Louis Brewery, and one of my favorite breweries.  I'd put it at Top 10.  The hef is my favorite, and the Kölsch is a great summer beer.  The Pale Ale is their flagship, and I like it just fine.

Crisp and refreshing.  Quenches a thirst.  Not long on the after taste.

Winter beers are "warmer" tasting, with hints of caramel, coffee, or oak in them.

Just because you don't get it, don't be hatin'

I just found one of the best beer bars that I've ever been to...90 on tap, over 200 selections, waitresses wearing plaid skirts & white knee socks, hot college girls ignoring me like usual. It was like a dream, only without me banging a hot girl that eventually turns into the high school lunch lady. If your ever in Addison, TX, you need to go directly to the Flying Saucer. Here's my update:

I'm not sure.  It is, however, brewed with apricot... which is a little gay but a lot delicious.  My other option of beers-I-haven't-tried at lunch today was Sam Adams Summer Ale, so my decision was easy.

Found a cool tap room tonight in Middletown, CT, that if it was near my home, I'd spend more time there than hiding from my family in the basement. Eli Cannons (http://www.elicannons.com/)

The only beer that I found nasty, was the Smuttynose IPA which tasted like liquid grama-hair perm juice. I'd drink wrung out underwear sweat if it was cold & gave me a buzz, but I only made it through 1/4 of the glass of Smutnose.

So we had the beer tasting last night.
Started out with the
Penn Weizen- i would never recommend this for anyone that doesn't have a slot.  It was like a mix of a really unnatural lemon, meets high carbonation.  Kind of reminded me of a really crappy cider beer.

Affligem Blond- Favorite of the night, 6.8% alcohol, i ended up having 4 of these.  Really a Belgian beer, good aftertaste.  I would highly recommend this beer if you like Belgian beers.

Birra Morretti Larosa- known for the blond version, this bad boy was 7.2% double bock but really smooth and light compared to other double bocks.  Had almost a reddish tint to the coloring, and seemed like it would be a good beer for Spaghetti

Hacker-Pschorr Munich Lager- This beer was plain to me in the first 3 sips or so.  Then it started to get character.  Not strong alcohol content wise, but decent flavor.  Seems like it would be a nice 6 pack beer to drink outside.

Paulaner Hefeweizen
- My second favorite beer of the night.  Typical Hefeweizen, good heavy/thick taste.  Seemed to taste better after settling for a minute or 2.

Blue Moon Honeymoon Summer Ale- Good summer beer, refreshing but too sweet for my tastes.  The wife really liked it.

Weekend update:

22. Red Dog. My favorite cheap ass beer.
23. Schlafy's Pilsner. I like everything they brew, with the coffee stout as an exception.  Not much of a stout guy.
24. Schlafly's American Lager.
25. Labatt's Blue.
26. New Belgium's Skinny Dip. New Belgium is a great brewery, and their Skinny Dip (A SUMMER BEER) doesn't disapooint. My favorite NB is their Abby, and can't wait to add it to my list.

21. Guinness. It took me almost a month to have one of these. I'm ashamed of myself.
22. Yeungling. I never thought it would happen, but I don't really like Yeungling anymore. It's starting to taste a little skunky to me and it always gives me awful hangovers and poopbabies. Having said that I drank about 12 of them last night.

I agree on both counts.  Yuengling was a "high quality" beer in college, and I drank a lot of it.  Now, for some reason, it really tastes like crap.

They could also be struggling with distribution and the beer is actually getting skunked on the way out or on the shelf.

Does anyone really know what makes beer skunked? Ive heard being exposed to sunlight does it...Ive heard being cold to warm and back does it...what exactly is skunked beer? Thats the question I'd like to know...
Title: Re: Beer Drinkers Challenge
Post by: rjs246 on June 25, 2007, 11:35:14 AM
Both of those can lead to beer becoming skunked. I also believe that age/time is a factor.
Title: Re: Beer Drinkers Challenge
Post by: Phanatic on June 25, 2007, 11:41:17 AM
I didn't know that it had to do with light. I know rapid change in temp can spoil beer too.

http://www.faqs.org/faqs/beer-faq/part2/section-15.html (http://www.faqs.org/faqs/beer-faq/part2/section-15.html)

Quote
"skunking"
When beer has been exposed to strong light, either natural or
artificial, certain components in hops alter and produce acrid
flavors, AKA being "lightstruck". This is why beer should be
bottled in brown bottles. Clear bottles offer no light
protection and green is only slightly better. Technically, light
of wavelengths from 550 nm and below can cause photochemical
reactions in hop resins, resulting in a sulfury mercaptan which
has a pronounced skunky character. 550 nm is roughly blue-green.
Bottled beer can become lightstruck in less than one minute in
bright sun, after a few hours in diffuse daylight, and in a few
          days under normal flourescent lighting.

     "spoiled"
Also referred to as going "off". This is a more vague term and
often refers to beer that has not been properly stored or
handled allowing oxidation (a cardboard taste) or other
off-flavors resulting from contamination, overheating, etc. As
with any fermented beverage, alcohol can also turn to vinegar,
imparting a sour taste to beer.

My beer pub of the week is Faegan's Cafe & Pub in Syracuse, which had a execellent draft selection & a pretty awesome toasted sirloin tip sandwich. The best of the beers I tried was War of 1812 Amber & the Southern Tier IPA, both of which were flavorful, yet clean. The Syracuse Pale Ale was weak & no man should ever drink Woodchuck Cider...ever.

From what I've read it is just a brewing partnership with Anheuser-Busch's Widmer. I don't see anything about acquiring them. That could mean that Widmer will brew some of their beer stateside most likely. Kind of like Guinness brewing and distributing AB beers in Ireland or Kirin doing the same for AB in Japan. It also gives them access to one of the best beer distribution networks in the US and gets the beer out there for more people to try.

I've heard, but have not yet seen, that bottles of Kona Brewery beers are now available in the St. Louis area.  Which would lead me to think that the distro system AB uses is a primary reason for this agreement.

As Inbev has found out. The AB Distro greatly helps success and gets the beer in every market.

The Budweiser Rep at the ballpark told me that Anheuser-Busch had acquired the company recently.  He may have been mistaken - I really don't know.

I found this on a Google search:  http://starbulletin.com/2007/05/31/business/story03.html

It does mention a brewing partnership with Widmer there.

Tuesday Night at Chevy's update.

27. Dos Equis. Boring.
28. New Belgium Fat Tire. Favorite brewery, and it's flagship beer. Nothing to complain about.
29. Michelob Amber Bock.  Good, for a macro.
30. Modelo Especial.  Pretty much El Budo-weiser-o.
31. Boulevard Lunar Ale.  I expected more, since I thought the label was cool.  Not a great beer, but nothing wrong with it.
32. Boulevard Porter.  Good.  For a porter.

Boulevard has a great sampler 12-pack out, where you get 7 different beers in the box.  I'll finish it tomorrow night at poker.

Wednesday Night Poker.  This has been a good week for me, beer-wise.

33. Michelob Ultra
34. Miller Chill - Not avaailable in St. Louis.  It's a lime and salt type beer, and it wasn't very good.  I could taste neither the lime nor the salt.
35. Milwaukee Ale House Fat Squirrel - Only avail in Milwaukee, and it was pretty good.  Bitter, but good.
36. Milwaukee Ale House Pale Ale - Only avail in Milwaukee, and it was in a growler. It went through a 12 hour drive, left in the car, then delivered to us.  It was flat, and a bit road-weary. I have no idea if it's a good beer or not.  But I drank it.
37. Boulevard Zon - Belgium White style.  I like those a lot, and this didn't disappoint.
38. Schlafly's Import IPA - 8% alcohol content.
39. Homebrew - Dougs - Copper #2 - Pretty coppery, but otherwise not bad.

Fire Rock may be the single finest beer I've tasted.

Agreed, we had a sixtel of Kona Fire Rock in Sea Isle on vacation with family last week, and had never had it before...great stuff, and now available in some places in NJ.

Also drank in the past three weeks, mostly while on vacation:

Victory Prima Pils: Was the Sea Isle house beer in the kegerator for most of the week; good casual drinking beer, tastes a lot like Pilsner Urquel, can drink quite a few over the course of a night.
Flying Fish Farmhouse Summer Ale: Replacement in the kegerator when the Prima Pils was gone...similarly easy to drink Summer ale.
Sierra Nevada Pale Ale: Great beer, a regular staple in my family.
Smithwick's: Good drink after golf.
Guinness: Never disappoints.
Sierra Nevada Summerfest: Excellent Summer beer.
Sam Adams Summer Ale: Pretty good wheat beer, tasty...but, I get tired of the flavor after a couple.
Yuengling Lager: Agreed with most other opinions posted...used to be a staple, now just burns like a bit of regurgitated bile in the back of the throat half-way through the first one. It gets worse after the 3rd or 4th.
Hoegaarden's: One of the best Belgians I've had, though not as good as Delirium Tremens.
Heineken: Not one of my favorites, but was what my cousins brought to the beach.

I'm not living up to my screen name & am going to have to step it up if I'm going to keep up with FD.  >:D

I took my daughter to a German-American Festival up in Bucks County on Sunday, which didn't have the type of selection that you'd assume would be present. The only imports on hand were Warsteiner & one other brand I never heard of. The regular Warsteiner was nice, but not very remarkable. I'll definitely buy some Warsteiner Dark in the fall as it had a good flavor but didn't make my taste buds feel like I've been licking a cat's ass. Speaking of licking a cat's ass, I tried a bottle of an Octoberfest that I made myself in February. I'll bring the rest to the next tailgate.

I also took her for sushi yesterday & had the obligatory Kirin & Sapparo that you have at a Japanese restaurant. Neither are anything special & no better than if I had a glass of domestic.

Neighbor's party last night, and he stocked up on some SA, so my list grew:

47. Sam Adams Light
48. Sam Adams Boston Lagar
49. Sam Adams Cherry Wheat
50. Sam Adams Hefeweizen - being a wheat fan, I was disappointed in this one.
51. Sam Adams Summer Ale
52. Sam Adams Pale Ale

53. Schlafly's Ryebier - Based with rye, and blander than I had hoped.
54. Schalfly's Dortmunder. Nice taste.  Not strong, but good body.
55. Schlafly's #15. A special beer to commemorate Schlafly's 15th anniversary.  A wheat based beer, with a slight fruit finish.  It was OK, but I bought the T-Shirt anyway, because a) I like Schlafly's, and 2) I was on a Three-beer lunch buzz.

29. Miller High Life Lite. Hahahahaahahahaha. It literally tastes like nothing. Slightly carbonated water. Far less offensive than I expected and basically a replica of Miller Lite. Will buy it if I see it and it costs less than Lite.

56. Red Stripe Lager - not very pleased with this beer.
57. Sam Adam's Honey Porter - Very tasty. I like this beer.
58. Sam Adam's Black Lager - OK.  Not bad.
59. Kirin Ichiban - Not my favorite Japanese beer. I remember drinking Orion in Okinawa, which still ranks as one of my favorite all time beers.  I wish I could have anouther.
60. 312 Urban Wheat (Goose Island Brewery) - I liked this.  Wish it was a little more strong in taste, but overall I liked this as well.

60 beers in 43 days - I'm ahead of the curve.  Sweet.

I still have a rather large cloth Orion banner I got from Okinawa. Sometimes memories make the beer a little better in your mind. For me Murphy's Stoute has simular sentimate.

Drinking a Killians Red right now. I'd like to try some other brands of Irish red beer.

Last night my old lady and one of her girlfriends and I drank:

Piraat Ale (Belgium)
Chimay Ale Grand Reserve (Belgium)
Green Flash Brewing Co. Imperial IPA (San Diego California)
Burton Ale India Empire Ale (England)
Kells Irish Style Lager (Oregon)

I liked the Piraat best.

I've got a bottle of Aventinus, a wheat doppelbock whatever that is (Germany) and Georg Scheider's Wiesen Edel-Weisse (also Germany).  Those will be quaffed later today.

If your ever in Philly, stop by Ludwig's Garten on Sansom St. for an excellent selection of German/Austrian beers & the occasionally hot European bartender.  It's about 2 blocks from where I work, so I stopped by there & the Independence Brew Pub after work on Friday.

One of the best overall beers I've had, was the Kostriker dark, which was flavorful & clean gave me a nice buzz. I finished off my stay there with a Samichlaus, a drink which traditionally gets me thrown out of bars. In addition to it being 14% alcohol, I swear it has something else in it that makes me go into women's bathrooms.

32. JW Dundee's Honey Brown

All of the Dundee's varieties are tasty, but muted. There wasn't much difference between any of them but they drink easy and don't leave much aftertaste. Genny Light requires no comment.

I think they all have the same styles of beer, but each has it's own names.  Since a brewer is on premise, I also think that the chain has their recipes that are sent to each.

I think I found the secret to completing this challenge.

Business trips and breweries.  I had 17 different types of beer in 3 days, mostly on the company dime.

72. Flying Dog Snake Dog IPA - A
73. Flying Dog Old Scratch Amber Ale - B+
74. Flying Dog In-Heat Wheat Hefeweizen - A
75. Flying Dog Double Dog Double Pale Ale - B+
76. Sundance Amber Ale - B-
77. PassTime Pale Ale - D

I visited the Flying Dog Brewery in Denver before heading to the airport, drank the beers and grabbed a T-Shirt.  I like the FD beers, and wasn't disappointed with their fresh off the tap beers.  They are actually served in the neighboring bar, named Blake Street Tavern.  I wish I had the Scottish Porter, but I had to drive and figured 4 was enough.  The nachos are huge.  The Sundance and PassTime were in the airport bar, and weren't cold enough and too much money.

Going through this exercise, I think IPA is overtaking wheat beers as my favorite style.  I just can't get enough of a really good, very hoppy beer.  Still love the wheats, but IPA's are where it's at.

I'm far too late to "win" this competition, but I'll do my best not to come in last.

1. Habrin - never heard of it before the other night. Chinese people make a decent beer.
2. Tsingtao - Part Deux of my yellow fever. Decent beer, but I prefered the Habrin
3. Phuket - Cheaper than Budweiser at my favorite watering hole in Chicago, and the waitresses get all pissy when you pronounce it phonetically. Good times.
4. Tucher - my favorite German wheat beer
5. Spaten - my second favorite German wheat beer
6. Paulaner - another good German wheat beer
7. Erdinger - try the aforementioned first
8. Wittekerke
9. Carlsberg
10. Dos Equis
11. Sol - love this Mexican beer
12. Sam Adams Summer Ale - one of the better summer ales
13. Grolsch Summer Ale - my favorite summer ale
14. Budweiser - because sometimes you have to start drinking at nine and the morning and must still be functional at 2:00 AM
15. Miller Lite - because  sometimes you drink them out of Budweiser
16. Blue Moon
17. Pabst Blue Ribbon
18. Old Style - for some reason Chicagoans love this stuff

:-D I was in Chicago for 2 days this week for work & thought I'd make up some ground on you. Looks like you were busy too. There's a dull ache were I think my liver is.

Looks like I also wasn't the only one to go to a Rock Bottom either. I really like their dry-rub ribs, beer & for some reason, girls always hit on me there. It apparently was guy night, so I didn't hang out too long. I really enjoyed one of their seasonal IPAs - American Dream   IPA. They're Rooftop Pilsner tasted like it was made by roof top rain run off, so I wasn't too impressed.

By far, the best beers I had, were at a pub called The Map Room. I started out with 3 Floyds Alpha King, which kicked my ass. If this beer was a woman, I have it's ankles pinned behind it's head. I followed it up with 3 Floyds Dreadnaught & their pricey X Anniversary Ale, which if it was a woman, I'd take it to Panera Bread for lunch, then shopping at Pottery Barn (I'm it's bitch).

Beermonkey - I'm a big fan of Goose Island.  If I get to Chicago, I'm drinking a lot of their shtein.  Plus, the dry rub ribs at Rock Bottom are very good.

rjs - I'll take that as a compliment.  In my unremarkably dull life, this works for me.  So I run with it.  Oh, and it's in the name of science.

It's been a helluva week.  23 different beers since Tuesday.  I think I'm taking the night off tonight.  I'm almost certain to have liver failure by the weekend.

Poker night:
78. Red Hook Long Hammer IPA. I'm an IPA guy now, and this didn't disappoint.
79. Red Hook Blonde. Tasty at first, but then turns pretty bland.
80. Red Hook Sunrye. Not bad. The rye is a good taste.
81. Red Hook ESB. Good for sipping, but didn't fit with the rest of the beers.
82. Breckenridge Remarkable Vanilla Stout. These must be very tricky, because some are really too sweet, and some too stout.  This was a good beer.  I need to get into some more of the Breckenridge beers.
83. Kona Brewing Fire Rock Pale Ale. A great, if not the best, Pale Ale I've had in quite some time.

On another note, I'll be brewing a batch of IPA in the next weekend or so with my brewer friends.  I can't wait to drink it down.

Usually memory.  If I stay with one brewer at a time, I can go on their web site when I'm sober and pick out the beers I had.  If it's something off the wall (like that crap at the airport), I make a note somewhere to remember later.  I've probably missed a few because I don't take notes, but I'm still drinking so it's good.

Quote1.
11. Red Stripe. The further removed from my college days I get, the less I like Lagers. (Miller Lite and the other light nonsense shtein that I jokingly tout as fantastic don't count. They're basically alcoholic water.)
12. Dos Equis Special Lager. Meh.
13. Heineken. Crap crap crap skunked crap
14. Sam Adams Boston Lager. Lots of flavor. I would never marathon drink with the stuff but one or two at a time is about right.
15. Bud Light. Awful.
16. Miller High Life. Slightly better.
17. Amstel Light. Delicious.
18. I forgot that I drank something called Moonshot 69 last night. It's caffeinated and TERRIBLE.
19. Redhook Blonde. Meh. Redhook is pretty meh all around.
20. Radeberger. My friend has been pimping this shtein to me for weeks so I tried it. I was completely in the bag when I got it, but it tasted like open ass.
23. Anchor Steam. Mmmmm, Anchor Steam.
24. Magic Hat Mystery Beer. Had some bite. Pretty good actually.
25. Magic Hat Circus Boy Heffeviesteneinfrefneru v. Delicious.
26. Smithwick's. An old favorite.
27. Bard's Tale. I'm ashamed of myself for even accepting the offer to drink this shtein. Awful
28. Stella Artois. People love this. I think it is less offensive than most 'green bottle beer' but still rather gross.
29. Miller High Life Lite. Hahahahaahahahaha. It literally tastes like nothing. Slightly carbonated water. Far less offensive than I expected and basically a replica of Miller Lite. Will buy it if I see it and it costs less than Lite.
30. Genny Light
31. JW Dundee's Pale Ale
32. JW Dundee's Honey Brown
33. JW Dundee's Amber Lager
34. Budweiser (heavy). Some flavor, not good. Lots of explosive gas the following day, very good.
35. Blue Moon. Tasty. Kind of a lame copy of real Belgian beer.
36. Sixpoint Summer Ale. The keg was warm as shtein but it would have tasted funky even ice cold. Blecht.

Tried a few beers.

Red Amber Ale - Outstanding beer and it was the hair of the dog I needed on Saturday.
Trailblazer Blonde Ale - Another outstanding choice that put me in that awesomly buzzed happy place you get the day after hardcore drinking.

I don't know how long I can keep this up,  I look like I aged 10 years since June.  :poison

I was at the Taco Mac near the Perimeter Mall in Atlanta last week to watch the Phillies. Except for the douche nozzle bartender who was a taterskins fan, I love that place. Over 100 beers on tap & 300 bottled, above average wings + hot women. I'd make it my home if I lived there.

I really enjoyed the Sweetwater 420 & had 3 of them that night. The best I had was the Ayinger Celebrator Dopple Bock, which made my legs start to feel numb.

Was in Dallas this week leanring my "new optional unless you want to resign" job, and had a few.  Not many, but a few.

84. Tecatz - complete crap.  And I bought a 2x4 of it, too.
85. Foster's Special Bitter - OK, but worse than regular Foster's
86. Pete's Wicked Ale - I didn't even know they still made this.  And I still don't like it.
87. Hoffbrau Steaks Brewery #2 Pale Ale - now we're talking. Small brewers are better.
88. Main Street Brewing Golden - B
89. Routh Street Brewery and Grille Red - B+
90. Schooner Brewery Pale Ale - B

I also had a bunch of new stuff this past weekend, but have no idea what they were.  I need to get a list from my buddy that was feeding them to me.

Got my list today.  All off the wall stuff, with the exception of the Murphy's

91. Sleemans Honey Brown. I don't remember how this tasted.
92. Barley Island's Dirty Helen - I think I liked this one.  I could have just been the name though...
93. Hoegaarden Grand Cru - this was good.
94. Upland Dragonfly IPA - This was my favorite.  Of course it was.  It's an IPA.
95. Murphey's Red - average.

I also had a sip of a Kona's Passion Fruit wheat, but it was only a sip sop I'm not counting it.  Totally a chick drink, no doubt.

We'll see who's mocking who when I see your jaundiced ass at a game this season.  :-*

Based on your recommendation, I went looking for Kona at my distributor, who said we can't get it in this area. There must be a couple other CF people who use Hatboro Beverage, since he said I was about the 5th person to ask for it this week.

Quote1.
23. Anchor Steam. Mmmmm, Anchor Steam.
24. Magic Hat Mystery Beer. Had some bite. Pretty good actually.
25. Magic Hat Circus Boy Heffeviesteneinfrefneru v. Delicious.
26. Smithwick's. An old favorite.
27. Bard's Tale. I'm ashamed of myself for even accepting the offer to drink this shtein. Awful
28. Stella Artois. People love this. I think it is less offensive than most 'green bottle beer' but still rather gross.
29. Miller High Life Lite. Hahahahaahahahaha. It literally tastes like nothing. Slightly carbonated water. Far less offensive than I expected and basically a replica of Miller Lite. Will buy it if I see it and it costs less than Lite.
30. Genny Light
31. JW Dundee's Pale Ale
32. JW Dundee's Honey Brown
33. JW Dundee's Amber Lager
34. Budweiser (heavy). Some flavor, not good. Lots of explosive gas the following day, very good.
35. Blue Moon. Tasty. Kind of a lame copy of real Belgian beer.
36. Sixpoint Summer Ale. The keg was warm as shtein but it would have tasted funky even ice cold. Blecht.
37. Lone Star. Cheap and delicious.
38. Michelob Lager. Gross.

I agree.  Heinies suck ass.

While on my vacation in upstate NY, I tried several new beers:

96. Saranac Adirondack Lager
97. Saranac Pale Ale
98. Saranac Black Forest
99. Saranac Black & Tan
100. Saranac Lager
101. Saranac India Pale Ale
102. Saranac Hefeweizen
103. Saranac Oatmeal Stout
104. Saranac Single Malt
105. Saranac Mountain Ale
106. Magic Hat Single Chair Ale
107. Magic Hat Blind Faith (IPA - again, not disappointed)
108. Magic Hat Fat Angel (Pale Ale)
109. Magic Hat Circus Boy (Hefeweizen)

The Saranac's are a local Adirondack beer brewed near Saratoga, and the Magic hat is brewed in Vermont.  They were both available in sampler packs, which is always a plus.  I have a few more Saranac's to try this week that I brought home with me.

All in all, I wasn't a big fan of the Saranac's, with the exception being the IPA, the Adirondack Lagar, and the Single Malt.  I did, however, enjoy the Magic hat beers.

Another week in Denver, and more beers consumed.

110. Rock Bottom Golden Ale
111. Rock Bottom Oatmeal Stout
112. Rock Bottom Irish Stout
113. New Belgium Mothership Wit - This was OK, but I expected better coming from NB Brewery
114. CB & Potts Buttface Ale
115. CB & Potts Hefeweizen
116. CB & Potts Red IPA
117. Breckenridge 471 IPA - A++.  This may be the best beer I have had to date.  I need to find more of it.
118. Rock Bottom Cascade Hops IPA

And as usual, Rock Bottom beers were passable, but nothing to write home about.  I'd drink far less of them if they weren't right across the street from the hotel I stay in.

Geary's Pale Ale, much better as a beer than a reliever.

Shipyard Pumpkinhead Ale..Really had too much spice in it.  If anyone's ever made Beer Bread, this beer should be banging in that stuff.  Yes, i'll off myself right now for saying that.

Michelob Bavarian Wheat - Very much Yum.
Michelob Lager - Not bad since the reformulation.
Michelob Amberbock - Nice beer to have after dinner to wind things down.
Grolsch - Free and not too bad for a dutch beer.

All of this beer was free too... Thich really helps with the taste of it.

Also Mich light is my favorite light beer.

120. Saranac Summer Ale

122. Saranac Kolsch
123. Saranac Pomegranate Wheat

All in all, I have to give the Saranac Brewery a C- at best.  Maybe even a D.  None of their beers stood out at all, and they all tasted pretty much the same with only mild differences.

127. Sam Adams Cream Stout - This was OK.  B-
128. Sam Adam's Octoberfest - Sam Adams has a shteinload of beer.  This was not one of their best.  C+
129. Sweaty Betty Blonde (Boulder Brewery, CO) - This is good brewery.  And this was a good selection.  B+
130. Mojo IPA (Boulder Brewery, CO) - I luv me sum IPA.  A-
131. Hazed & Infused Dry Hop Ale (Boulder Brewery, CO) - Very tasty, but quite an aftertaste.  B- for the aftertaste problem.

133. Redpoint Ale (Avery Brewing, Boulder, CO) - B
134. Miller Lite - I can't believe I hadn't had one of these since June 1st
135. Whitebread Pale Ale (Bedforshire, England) - C+. Average and bland.
136. Unibroue Maudite (Vermont) - A- : A very good beer with a cool label and story (see below)
137. Founders Dirty bastich - B+ - Better name then beer, but still OK
138. Trader Joe's Hofbrau Bock - D-:  Ugh. This was a poor beer.
139. New Belgium Trippel - A - I think this might be my favorite New Belgium beer.
140. Three Floyd's Pride & Joy Mild Ale - A+. Wow - this is one fantastic beer, and hits the inner hippie in you
141. Oaken Barrel Gnaw Bone Pale Ale - B
142. O'Fallon Cherry Chocolate - B-  Better than it sounds, but still not all that great.
143. Jeff's Home Brew Chocolate #5 - I almost puked.  Seriously, I slammed my 12 ounces to get passed it, and almost puked.

149. Schlafly's Oktoberfest - B.  OK, but nothing special.
150. Wernesgruner - C-.  Typical German ale taste, which I'm not a big fan of.
151. Coors - Really?
152. Coors Light - F--
153. O'Fallon Pumpkin - A-. A good pumpkin beer, and I can drink many in a row.  That says something.
154. O'Fallon Wheach - B. Peach and Wheat. After 2, I felt like I had tits.
155. O'Fallon Smoked Ale. D. Bacon in a bottle.  NOT as good as you would think.
156. Monterrey Cerveza (Guatamala beer) - NA.  Skunked, so I can't really grade it.  But I drank all 12 ounces.
157. Klassiek Lager (Holland) - C-. Holland beer.  Not a fan.
158. Stone Mill Pale Ale (Green Valley Brewing Co) - B. Another organic beer, and surprisingly not bad.

that doesnt necessarily mean anything...mergers often take place to enhance advertising sales distrubution and production of each company...but the money stays seperate...in other words they get together to up the money making abilities of two different companies under one name

high life is the best of the crap.  bar down the street from me sells cans for $1.50 as long as they're open.

if i'm buying cheap  beer for people coming over, i always get miller lite.

i drank a pitcher of coors the other day for the first time in a while and it was awful.

100% wrong.  BS is craptacular.  If I had to choose from the huge ass macros, which occasionally I do, then it goes
Miller Lite
Bud Light
High Life
Bud
Coors
Kool Aid
Milk
Root Beer
Water in a pinch
Coors Light
Bud Select

drinking it is the same as spending money on it homeboy.  you're splitting hairs again.  do the math with me..

you're at a party there's only coors lite.  you drink it because you didn't buy it so you think you're not supporting Pete.  The Coors Lite runs out because people (you) are drinking it.  Someone goes out and buys more Coors lite.

you didn't give him money directly, but you supported him just the same

you don't have actual principles on this point..you just have a nice soundbyte that you think makes you sound cool
Title: Re: Beer Drinkers Challenge
Post by: ice grillin you on October 12, 2007, 10:16:11 AM
negative chief

if i show up at a party and theres a keg of coors there and nothing else (which would never happen) i would probably drink it rather than leave the party and go buy my own beer and try to look cool as youd say

if theres a beer run for another coors keg then im making the run with the guys and getting a few 40's for myself

i really cant imagine a scenario where i would ever even drink coors again...at the same time i gotta keep it real and say never say never

anyway irony is a bitch mr marriage was invented by satan

My opinion on lite or light beers is that they are all pretty close to the same. It's all just a matter of which marketing appeals to you most. Arguing over which flavor of beer you like best is dumb as everyone has different taste...

As for the Busch family their actually with whichever political party is for making alcohol easier to move and sell. No party affiliation required. Though they're very into environmental activism and shtein like that for some reason.

As for the Coors Miller merger you can expect lots of jobs to be lost as they consolidate things here in the US. There will be 200 million bucks cut in cost savings between the two companies. That's jobs, breweries, distribution and marketing. I think it will take them at least a year to get it all hashed out. Some distribute rs aren't going to be happy as they could be excluded.

I'm going to this Octoberfest Hof Brau tonight and people are dressing up like Knight Rider and listening to David Hasselhoff music all night.

QuoteWe understand why Germans love Oktoberfest: Endless giant mugs of beer, piles of bratwurst, drunken singing. We don't understand the country's love affair with David Hasselhoff, though, especially after seeing poorly dubbed episodes of "Baywatch" and hearing the Hoff's sketchy (and slightly predatory) single "Jump in My Car," in which the former Michael Knight tries to lure ladies into his sports car despite their protestations, and then kicks them to the curb when he finds out where they live. (The video, which features the Hoff sending up his "Baywatch" and "Knight Rider" characters, redeems the song somewhat.) Anyway, back to Oktoberfest and the Hoff. Rustico is bringing back its Don't Hassel the Hof Brau party, which honors Munich's famous Hofbrau Oktoberfest beer as well as David Hasselhoff and Halloween. The restaurant will give away cool Hofbrau mugs with every beer purchased, and guests are encouraged to come in costume. We. Can't. Wait.

Almost forgot about updating this:

159. Birra Moretti (Imported from Italy) - D.  Pretty lame taste.
160. Denver Pale Ale (Great Divide Brewing Co) - B-
161. Titan IPA (Great Divide Brewing Co) - A-. A very good IPA, but I say that about almost all IPA's.
162. Harpoon IPA - I don't remember drinking this. I'm sure it was tasty though.
163. Lord Chesterfield Ale - C-
164. Smithwick - D+
165. Old Dominion Ale
166. Old Dominion Pale Ale
167. Old Dominion Tuppers Hop Pocket Ale - The best of the OD brews, with Great American coming in a close second.
168. Old Dominion Great American Pale Ale
169. Old Dominion New River pale Ale
170. Summit Extra Pale Ale - B. This was OK.  Brewed in St. Paul, and all the Minnesotans were bragging on it.
171. Summit India pale Ale - B.  Same.

43 beers to go.  62 days left in the year.  Time to start cranking.

I lost count back a long while ago, but have to give Demon some props.  I ended up finding Stone Brew here in MD.  My liquor store is the first place in MD to offer it.  Love the Arrogant bastich ale(my brother brought some up to the bears tailgate) and the IPA which is super hoppy.  The liquor store up the street i found specializes in beer growlers and they bring in a new keg of something all the time.  2 weeks ago is was the Stone, right now they have Sierra Nevada Celebration which is a treat onto itself.

172. Grolsch - not going to grade it, but now one of my favorite memories
173. Michelob Marzen - B
174. Schalfly's ESB (Extra Special Bitter) - A - A great beer with fantastic bitter taste.  Yumm....
175. New Belgium's 2 Below - B+ - I like all of NB's beers, and this is pretty decent
176. Michelob Bavarian-Style Wheat - A- - I'm digging the new Mich micros -- if you can taste them, I recommend them.
177. Michelob Pale Ale - B
178. Michelob Porter - B+
179. Red Fox Amber Ale - C - pretty bland, and quite average
180. Warsteiner Dunkel - B- - maybe I was expecting something different, but this was a "lively" taste
181. Keystone Light - D-
182. Natural Light - D-
183. Steel Reserve 211 - D+ - only because it was the best of the last three.  I need some good beer.

184. Jack's Pumpkin Spiced Pale Ale - B-  - pretty sure this is an AB product, and it's not bad.
185. Harp Lager B
186. Black and Tan - C-. The bartender couldn't get this right, so it was about 90% black with very little tan.  Just like that tramp in Okinawa that had me at hello.

187. Rock Bottom – Rocky Pale Ale - B-. Standard PA beer, but nothing special.
188. Rock Botton St. Vincent - C-. Wasn't memorable.
189. Rock Bottom Choco Loco - C-. It was spicy, and citrusy.  Not chocolaty at all.
190. Bistro Ginger Beer - D. WHOA!  Very strong ginger taste, and me no likee.
191. Easy Street Wheat (Odell Brewery) - A-. Yet another Colorado beer I have found I like.
192. Kona Longboard - A. Kona makes some good beers.
193. Hinanu (Tahiti) - C.  Average, far-east beer. Not sure if it's rice, ginger, or what, but these all pretty much taste the same.

21 beers to go. I think I'm going to finish.

194. Winter's Bourbon Cask (Old Chicago) C-. Not a fan of the Bourbon casks
195. St. Nicholas Christmas Ale - C. Nothing special or memorable of this beer.
196. Shiner Bock - B-. I think everyone has had this one.
197. Pilsner Urquell - C+. Not a huge Pilsner fan, but this was decent.
198. Fuller's ESB - A. I love my hops and bitter ales.
199. Fuller's Porter - B+. A pretty good beer.
200. Weber Backyard Brew (by Goose Island, Chicago). B+. This was good. It's a special brew by GI just for Weber's, which is a great restaurant in Chicago if you get out there. Corner of State and Grand.
201. Truman Pils C. It was OK, but nothing special.
202. Abita Turbodog B. A good, heavy beer.  Hint of chocolate.

My buddy runs a home-brew club out here (shameless plug for him: http://www.garagebrewers.com/) and they meet at least once a month.  He usually brews about 2 to 3 beers a month, and while some are better than others, he does a real good job overall.  If I wasn't so lazy, I'd join him.  But it's easier to let him make it, and then drink what he makes.

i was the same way, good friend of mine is serious about home brewing.  He makes the 5 gallon kegs regularly.  The mr beer kit was really easy, watching him brew makes it easier to fathom me doing it, though you spend about 4 hours getting it all together.  Might not be a bad thing to do after the football season is over.

does that mr. beer kit stink up the place?  i would like to try it but don't have a whole lot of space since i live in a condo.  no basement or garage or anything.

nah, its pretty small.  All you do is sanitize the barrel that the kit comes with.  Boil water, add the beer kit can(it makes the wort) then add sugars/spices.  Let it cool, put it in the barrel and add yeast.  As soon as a week later you can bottle it.  Add sugar in the bottle with the beer to give you carbonation, and then wait a week.  It's not great Matty, but its not a bad beer either, i was surprised by my creation considering i just added random stuff to thier recipe

I finished!

I went slumming over the weekend, drinking some of my neighbor's cheap beer that I usually avoid.  Also, I found it a miracle that I had gone that long without tasting some of these in drinking this many beers.

202. Budweiser  (the number 202 shows up twice because I forgot #42 in my list)
203. Old Milwaukee
204. Old Milwaukee Light
205. Miller High Life

Then, a few of others at my buddy's house, again over the weekend:

206. Guinness
207. Corona Light
208. Kona Wailua Wheat

And then I finished up at poker on Wednesday night with these.  I bought a couple 2x4's just to finish the list (the PBR and Keystone), plus a few other beers I bought for the holidays.  Add that to the homebrew my buddy brought, and it was 214!!

209. Keystone Ice
210. Pabst Blue Ribbon
211. Schlafly's Christmas Ale
212. Breckenridge Christmas Ale
213. Jeff's Homebrew – Brown Ale
214. Jeff's Homebrew - IPA

WOO-HOO!    I'd like to say I'm beer'd out from all of this and I'll take a break, but with Christmas next week, I have a ton of beer in my fridge for those evenings.  Maybe I'll take that break after January 1st....

I could enjoy it if someone else paid.
