Title: The Internets
Post by: MDS on May 01, 2007, 11:33:51 PM
I'm moving into a new house in a month, and we need to worry about all this nonsense bill paying and such.

Do you geeks have any recommendations for internet service? Efficiency is key, but so is price. My boy from the office said Comcast is by far the best, but perhaps not the cheapest.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks much. Bye!

I'm still betting on dial-up making a come back.

Buy low, sell high.  8)

Comcast.

Its like $40 a month. Yeah they rape you, but its the best around. Tell your loser roomates to pony up and split the bill.

I'm the only Jew, but money is the major issue. Go figure.

Verizon DSL is like $20, I think. Not as fast as cable, but not suicide-inducing slow like AOL.

If it's available, Verizon FiOS is cheaper & faster than comcast cable.

When it comes down to every day web surfing, 768k DSL works okay (bandwidth limits mitigated somewhat by lower latency). As long as you aren't planning to surf, watch videos, and download music all at the same time, you won't really see all that much difference. Of course, if you have more than one person using the net at one time, it might be an issue, though.

MDS if Fios is there, its cheaper and faster.  Otherwise in a house with roommates i would recommend Comcast.  DSL when sharing can get reduced down to near dial speeds, but if you guys dont mind that much it will save you about 20 bucks a month.

Ya, what Sus said.  I went with DSL in Baltimore.  I don't play games online, don't download a whole lot, rarely stream more than the occasional video or radio broadcast.  It's been plenty fast and is cheaper than cable.

BUT...I did not  want cable TV either.  HAD I wanted cable TV, DSL would not have been as clearly cost effective, and if you throw in that I could have added my telephone service to the same package, maybe I wouldn't spend more if I had all three on one service.  But I did manage to pay the least for only the service I want...yay capitalism.
