This August, I'll be headed to St. Louis to watch the Dodgers v. Cardinals.
Phanatic and Demon, what are the spots to hit up while we're there? I think we're staying in some casino/hotel around there. Do we even need to rent a car, or does public transportation do a pretty good job of taking you around up there?
You should stay in East St. Louis. Hip river community. You'll fit right in.
St. Louis in August??
:-D
What - Ho Chi Minh City was already booked solid??
Have fun in 100 degree heat with 100% humidity, chuggie.
Great. :(
Romey ain't kiddin.. you shoulda checked out some other things. Man, it's brutal here in August. You literally will be a wet-back.
Depending on where you are staying (if it's the Casino Queen, no car required, if it's Harrah's a car is 100% required) will tell how much public transportation you will use. the metro will take you directly from the airport to the Casino Queen (which, strangely enough, is in East St. Louis, but you'll be fine as long as you dont wander off their property). And then you can use the metro to get you to the ballpark and Laclede's Landing (where we were after the rams game). Plenty of great restaurants in the area, but you may need a taxi to get you to Soulard if you want those bars. Washington Avenue is within walking distance of the ballpark, where all the hip bars are. just remember -- the metro stops running around 1:00 AM, so you'll either need to take a cab (maybe $20), or break the law and be a man and walk across the river on the metro bridge like Phanatic and I did.
Brutal is the only word I can use to describe St. Louis in summer. I thought Florida was the most disgusting place in this country during the summer until I took a business trip to St. Louis. At least it rains in the afternoons here and we get a sea breeze most days.
Still, everything's air-conditioned and it's not like you'll be staying in a cardboard box by the bus station, so you should be fine. Just don't schedule any daytime Cardinals games.
:P
Uh...Friday, night game...saturday...day game. :paranoid
Two words, Chuggie: CLUB SEATS.
:-D
I was actually just in St. Louis last week for 2 nights. Nice town but it was near dead at night, except for the Circuit City manager's convention that infested the city with slicked back loud mouthes. Busch stadium looked like an awesome place & I was sorry I wasn't there later in the Spring.
I ended up at a place called Maggie O'Briens both nights, once for ribs & toasted raviolis & then on the second night for a steak medallion sandwich called "The Shamrock", which I still drool about this week.
I ended up being more impressed with the arch than I thought I would be. It was most definitely worth being a typical tourist and taking the ride up to the observation room.
The first pic is from the observation room & the second is the Arch view from in front of Hooters.

I'm dig going to the top of tall things and looking around.
The Arch is cool as you can see the entire city, only thing is, it sways the entire time you're up there. It doesn't feel 'right' but apparently its normal.
Took a tour of the Budweiser brewery, definitely worth it, the free beer at the end was a good way to keep my buzz going.
Went to the 'Oz' (Ozzie Smiths restaurant) which was okay to watch the Flyers/Devils playoff series. People there looked at us like we were nuts for being so interested in hockey. My Uncle bounced at the Funny Bone in the same shopping center, saw a few decent comedians there but nobody worth mentioning.
(Last tittie bar I ever attended) was this place that's opened all night and normal girls are encouraged to get up on stage and strip. And many of them do, without much prompting from anyone. Some skank (Robin I think) from one of the Real Worlds was there. I wound up chatting with her and her enormous tits for 15-20 minutes.
