Do you think he is Stallworth's replacement as a vertical option BigEd or is he Mahe's replacement as a returner?
or both?
Hood's replacement. As a WR, he's a #4/#5. But he has speed. I'll be pissed if they try to push him off as Stallworth's replacement.

He's more of a kickoff returner than he is a punt returner. I doubt this move has much to do with Stallworth.
Then what the heck is Bloom's role?
and why wait until a day or two day before Stallworth is supposed to make his decision to sign Bethel?

I'm missing the joke I guess.
Look at the scroll on the bottom of the screen. Someone on the EMB took a picture of it with their camera because no one could find a source.
bethel johnson is starting the domino effect??
Yep. Donnie Edwards, Stallworth, Corey Dillon, Darrell Jackson, Vilma are on the way.
I can't wait.
Brown, Baskett, Avant, GLew, Bloom, Johnson?
The only way Stallworth comes back now is if they plan on cutting GLew or Bloom. Maybe they signed Johnon to replace Lewis?
Superbowl!!
Nice one MDS. :yay
Wonderful. I can barely contain my excitement.
Good KR. That's about it.
Didn't the Patriots draft him inordinately high? Now we're picking up other teams' draft mistakes too?
Yep, 2nd round I believe.
Oh man, I hope he has like ten catches this year!
assuming this is a ST moves i like the move. dont know how bloom will do and bethel is already an upgrade over mahe.
this is a small but excellent move....this guy can be a great KR....i like it

Agreed, I do like the signing. I just hope the FO thinks this gets them off the hook for resigning Donte.
This signing totally helps this team's AWFUL kick return game, and as someone said earlier, if Bloom doesn't work out they have their asses covered. Plus, with a little luck, one of the WR stiffs they have on the roster now will get kicked to the curb.
The Eagles actually upgraded the KR position here. Why are people complaining about this exactly?
I just hope the FO thinks this gets them off the hook for resigning Donte.
the thing is tho there is no replacement for stallworth...unless they strike a miracle in the draft with a rookie wr who pulls a colston...but thats not gonna happen so lets address other weak spots on the team and this does that at KR

The assumption is that he is somehow replacing Stallworth, which I don't think is the case.
I agree with you Rome...this upgraded the KR position and is a smart move, but I wonder what this means for Bloom?
it means nothing for bloom...bloom has always had a small chance of ever contributing in the nfl...if he does turn into a player then thats great but you dont wait on him
I don't think this means anything for Bloom. Bloom is a longshot to make the team. If he makes it, great. If he doesn't then a guy like Johnson would be there to take up the slack.
I don't see any way the Eagles are looking at him to replace Donte Stallworth. How do you replace a legitimate #1 receiver with a guy who's nothing more than a #3 or #4 at best?
I think people have Donte on the brain and can't see past anything but that right now and frankly I'll be glad when he's either signed or gone. One way or another it's time to move on.

i would normally agree, but this is a team that brought it Charles Johnson and James Thrash thinking they could elevate to #1 recievers

I think the issue is that many of us believe they're going to pass it off as a significant addition to the offense also.
Good move. I just hope this has no affect on the Stallworth decision. Greg Lewis is signed until 2011. Good heavens.

Who gives a farg what they pass it off as? Everyone here knows that Brown, Avant & Baskett are the three top receivers now and are likely going to be next year (unless they pull another rabbit out of their hat). The Eagles haven't come right out and said it but their actions and little comments via Reid, Heckert & Spadaro have pretty-well confirmed that.
Isn't it time for us to come to grips with it and move on? That's all I'm saying, FF.
they arent getting stallworth...and there is no replacement for him....be upset about it by why would it cause you to criticize another move that will help the team

No. A team that passes the ball at least 55% of the time needs better receivers.
Really, ya think? :-D
Hey, I understand your frustration. I share it, believe me. I want Marvin Harrison & Chad Johnson type talent at the wide-out positions but they have what they have, so we as fans deal with it and move on.
Regardless, I don't see Bethel Johnson as anything but a special teams player and fourth receiver type and if the Eagles try and pass him off as Stallworth's replacement, I'll just laugh at it and ignore it for what it is... standard operational bullshtein.
It's just not funny anymore. The defense will suck this year, so the offense better be elite.
it comes down to this id rather have bethel johnson as my 4th wr AND a kr than say shaun mcdonald as my #4 and reno or bloom as my kr
I like this move. Like IGY said... small, but potentially excellent. He's got speed for days... and if the blocking is good (as it was for Mahe a number of times last year) he can take it to the house and not get hawked from behind.
As for him being a replacement for Stallworth... I don't think that's the deal at all. It has no bearing on resigning Stallworth because in the end, Johnson's not even a lock to make the team ala Ed Jasper last year. This is more of a replacement for Mahe than Stallworth.
The Eagles simply picked up a kick returner who happens to be a WR.

Seriously though, per NFL.com Kevin Curtis is scheduled to meet with the Eagles later today. My guess is that if he signs, he'll be the "replacement" for Stallworth.
I like the signing too, all the other needs kind of put the KR position in the background. The guy's got top end speed and area we've lacked in having at that position since, ummm Vai? I'm not even sure he was that fast at the time.
Course lets not get our hopes up...the mighty mormon power ranger could have another stellar camp and beat Bethal out. I want to hurt myself for thinking that.

It's a given. Remember... the Eagles
are going to add a RB.
Bethel Johnson has 2 kick returns for TD's in 4 years. Was 22nd in the NFL in kickoff returns last year. Not exactly great numbers. He also only has 6 career punt returns so dont look for him to help much in that area.
I hope the new special teams coach is awesome.

Ill tell you after you tell me where you came up with the stat that only 1 other player has.
How many did Hester have last year?
actually there might be two
either way two in four years is very good
hester had 2 last year
dante hall? ummmm that guy from detroit?
Hester had 6 combined, but not all were KR
bethel isnt a PR im not counting that
actually i can only think of two hall and mcgee...there might be a third?...murp??
Eddie Drummond?
4 guys had more
Dante Hall
Justin Miller
Terrence McGhee
Devin Hester
ATLEAST another 8 players had 2 TD's in 4 years or less of them returning kicks. If that impresses you than great, im glad your happy. Even if you love that stat you must be a little turned off by the fact that he has 0 td's in the last two seasons and hasnt ranked high in kickoff returns in the last two seasons either.
2006: 22nd
2005: 25th
Don't mean shtein unless the pitiful blocking gets fixed though.
I like that they upgraded the position. Perhaps Johnson and Bloom are back there? And Bloom returns punts. He'll be the guy who takes Mahe's 53rd roster spot.
i coulda swore hester only had two last year
either way bethel johnson is a monster upgrade at the KR position....some of you hate to just hate

btw i looked it up hester had only 2 KR last season

dumbest comment ever?...who cares show bad the guy he replaced was...the team is better for it...if reno had stayed the KR youd still be bitching....
they replace him with a burner...a guy that can take it to the house at anytime and you still arent happy...
I already said I'm happy about Johnson being added purely as a return specialist, but if the team is really hoping he'll contribute even a little bit on offense, I want to punch scrotums.
of course he wont and if they try to pawn him off as such then ill be the first in line to murder them
Spadaro:
QuoteBethel is here to compete on KR and to challenge at WR. One-year deal. Has to make the team. Very talented guy but hasn't put it all together. He and Bloom are competing at KR right now ...
So their lone free agent so far might not even make it past Lehigh.
16-0. Superbowl.
Everyone's looking at this as a shot at Bloom, but I seriously doubt it...It's the replacement for Mahe. Bloom is a PR type, but as a KR he's a little small and would get murdered on one of them vicious Sheldon Brown type hits. The likelyness of that happening on the PR's is less.
Bloom is making the team next year at PR.
i dont know whats more impressive your knowledge or the way you present it
What's the line on saying that if Stallworth doesn't sign the only thing he was good for was speed and the Eagles made up for that in signing Bethel?
I wouldn't be surprised if Spads says Bethel is tantamount to Stallworth because both can "stretch the field". Hopefully Johnson doesn't turn into Jabar Gaffney -- get cut and then re-surface later on in the season to have a great post-season.
I'm just lowering expectations so when I'm crushed later on this week it won't feel as bad.

kind of like chad owens at Jacksonville last year.
With Bloom and Bethel Johnson on the roster, the return posistions are "set" and they won't freakin resign Reno Mahe. That's all I care about. That means we could be looking at Westbrook/??/Moats next year with 6 WR's (Brown/Baskett/Avant/Johnson/Bloom/??), instead of carrrying 4 RB's.....Hopefully the RB ? is filled by Corey DIllion and the WR ? is filled with Stallworth.
I actually laughed out loud when I read we signed Bethel Johnson.
Imagine being Dave Spadaro when they hand you the press release. Even he probably spit his coffee everywhere.

too funny.
what does failing a physical in this case mean exactly...did they not feel as tho he was rebhabbing his leg properly...how do you fail a physical if youre hurt
Who knows...maybe they determined that he injured himself prior to signing with the team? Because if he hurt himself as a member of the squad they can't cut injured players solely because of injury.
Jeremy Bloom looks to be the KR/PR.
If he hurt himself before signing and the Eagles either didn't catch it or didn't check for it then shame on them for signing him in the first place. Always check the eggs before buying a carton.
thats what I thought was funny... what the hell does it matter if he failed a physical at the beginning of June? He has plenty of time before camp to get healthy. Why even give physicals right now? How often do these guys have to pass a physical anyway? I wonder if McNabbs knee passes a physical today..........
I would guess that when they sign a guy to a 1yr no signing bonus deal they just issue physicals at the start of OTAs and not drag the guy in during March or February. Obviously when they do a Kearse-like deal he gets every doc in the Delaware Valley looking at him. But that is the only thing I can think of is that players like Bethel get their physicals now. I don't think returning players have to go through a physical because the teams knows them and has monitored the rehab (if they were hurt) since the injury and know whats up
farg reno mahe. that picture makes me want to stab people. i hope bloom stays healthy. if reno makes the team cause of this it just proves reids boy love for that little shtein.
Because if he hurt himself as a member of the squad they can't cut injured players solely because of injury.
you can cut them if you come to a monotary seperation agreement...thats basically what i was asking why not just do this
I would guess that when they sign a guy to a 1yr no signing bonus deal they just issue physicals at the start of OTAs and not drag the guy in during March or February.
i cant believe the team is going to let him participate in a mini camp without a physical
Who wants to buy my authentic Bethel Johnson jersey?
You got one from that guy in Singapore, too?
I wish. I had high hopes for Bethel so I went all out and bought one here in the states. Surely I'm not the only one.
Still hasn't been confirmed anywhere else ???

QuoteEagles cut Johnson -- for now
Thursday, June 07, 2007
The Eagles yesterday cut kick returner/wide receiver Bethel Johnson due to his inability to pass a physical after sustaining a stress fracture in his leg during a workout prior to the team's post-draft minicamp in May.
However, team sources said yesterday the plan is to turn around and re-sign Johnson at some point so he can compete with Jeremy Bloom for the job of returning punts and kickoffs.
Johnson, who has dressed but has been unable to participate in any of the Eagles' organized team activities (OTA), signed a one-year, $595,000 contract with the Eagles March 8 after starting just nine of his 50 career games with the New England Patriots and Minnesota Vikings since the 2000 season. He led Minnesota with 45 kickoff re turns for 1,054 yards (23.4 yards per return) in 2006.
Johnson, 28, has just 39 receptions for 606 yards and four touchdowns, but owns a pair of Super Bowl rings from 2003 and 2004 as a member of the Patriots -- the lat ter coming at the expense of the Eagles.

How much lower can you sign for than the vet minimum? The move seems superfluous unless there are some cap ramifications in cutting him now if their ultimate intention is still to keep him around to challenge Bloom in training camp.
Bethel signed a one year deal with the Texans per ESPNews bottom line and Schefter.
