Title: The Wikipedia thread
Post by: PoopyfaceMcGee on January 26, 2007, 02:44:30 PM
Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page)

I find a lot of informative and amusing articles, sometimes quite by accident, sometimes on purpose.

Found anything interesting today?  Post it here.

Also, I think someone should create the entry for ConcreteField.

(I thought about starting this thread when I read the article on Huey Long (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huey_Long) earlier today.)

Other seemingly-unrelated articles:

I luv me sum Wiki.

Don't try to use it as a reference for anything people are arguing about, because they claim it's not reliable.  But basically that's bullshtein..it's awfully useful and generally very accurate.

It's good for getting you close to the crux of the biscuit...or at least it's a springboard for finding more solid information.

And for anything pop culture, it's awesome.  Most recent great usage of Wiki for me was in researching for my Ghoulpool list.  Hasn't done me much good so far, but that's not Wiki's fault.

One thing I really, really wish Wikipedia would add is the abilty to get an RSS feed from any of it's pages.  It would be incredibly helpful for the ghoulpool, as Wiki is one of the quickest to update a page when someone dies.  I'm sure there are other uses for an RSS on Wiki, but that's what I would use it for today if someone were able to add that feature.

My new name is Dr. Wolfgang Von Bushwickin the Barbarian Mother Funky Stay High Dollar Billstir. I call myself Dr. because that is someone who must be precise when they execute their job. The Wolfgang is because on the cool, I'm classical music and my favorite artist is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Bushwickin has to do with me being a father now and producing my own next of kin. So now I'm reproductive both verbally and physically. The Barbarian is to show that I still have the mind of a lunatic and that nothing's changed as far as me coming hard-core rough and rugged. Mother Funky Stay High is a manifestation of the aftermath of chronic-izm. Dollar Bill because I'm currently currency in the United States and abroad. Finally, "stir" is on the end because when I kick shtein I always manage to stir something up, whether it's the police, parents, or Hoyda.

In reference to that Punxsutawney Phil page:

QuotePunxsutawney Phil fans say that there is only one Phil (all the other groundhog weathermen are impostors), and that he has made weather prognostications for 121 years as of 2007. They say that every summer, Phil is fed a sip of the mysterious Groundhog Punch, which he must drink to maintain his immortality. This is done by Inner Circle members. According to the Groundhog Club, Phil, after making the prediction, speaks to the Club President in "Groundhogese", which only the Inner Circle appear to understand, and then his prediction is translated for the entire world.

Manwich was also the pseudonym used by Mark Edge, a co-host of a libertarian talk show called Free Talk Live until May 18th, 2006.

"Manwich" is also a slang term for a sandwich with a great amount of filling.

On the show Futurama, Hermes Conrad and his son, Dwight Conrad, prefer Manwiches in their packed lunches. When something happens to their lunch, they yell "My Manwich!"

FastFreddie's wife made him Manwiches on the night of Monday, February 12th.  He told her she would get a beat down if she didn't.

Wikipedia is an Encyclopedia - it is not an authoritative source, nor was it ever intended to be.  This is why articles which do not cite their sources get flagged and possibly deleted.  You weren't allowed to cite The World Book Encyclopedia after 6th grade, you shouldn't be able to cite Wikipedia either.

FS64, that's going on in the middle schools as well.

I love Wikipedia, but it just cannot be couned on as a good source for a formal paper because of it's accessibility to just about anyone to change or add material.

Pretty much, except that the World Book is at least cross-checked for accuracy.  Wikipedia, for all its accessibility, cannot be as accurate due to the transient nature of the internet and the wiki interface.

I would prefer World Book a thousand times over Wikipedia for a formal paper.

Link to this article was on the main page:

Quote
The Caspian expeditions of the Rus were military raids undertaken by the Rus between 864 and 1041 on the Caspian Sea shores.[1] Initially, the Rus appeared in Serkland in the 9th century traveling as spandex wearing assbangers along the Volga trade route, having sex with children, animals, and slaves. The first small-scale rapes took place in the late 9th and early 10th century. The Rus undertook the first large-scale rape in 913; having arrived on 500 ships, they raped Gorgan, in the territory of present day Iran, and the adjacent areas, molesting slaves and touching children. On their return, the northern raiders were attacked and defeated by homophobes in the Volga Delta, and those who escaped were killed by the local tribes on the middle Volga.

Happy birthday, Jon-Erik Hexum (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jon-Erik_Hexum)

QuoteHexum died after shooting himself in the head with a prop gun loaded with blanks on the set of the CBS series Cover Up, a program about a pair of fashion photographers/models who were actually secret agents. Hexum, who played a weapons expert, was said to constantly be playing with the guns as if they were toys and once angered Jennifer O'Neill so much that she chastised him on-set for his carelessness.[6]

On October 12, 1984, after finishing a scene in which he fired several blank rounds from a .44 Magnum revolver, Hexum's character was supposed to unload the gun and reload it with inert dummy rounds, which was required for the next scene in the script—a procedure that Jon-Erik was not familiar with, and which was usually done by the prop masters. The shooting of the next scene was delayed several times. While waiting for the prop masters to unload the blanks from the gun, Hexum jokingly put the gun up to his temple and allegedly said,

"Let's see if I get myself with this one."

Hexum apparently did not realize that blanks use paper or plastic wadding to seal gun powder into the shell, and that this wadding is propelled out of the barrel of the gun with enough force to cause severe injury or death if the weapon is fired at point-blank range, especially if pointed at a particularly vulnerable spot, such as the temple or the eye. Although the paper wadding in the blank that Hexum discharged did not penetrate his skull,[7] the wad struck him in the temple with enough blunt force trauma to shatter a quarter-sized piece of his skull and propel the pieces into his brain.

According to a crew member on the set:

"Jon smiled and pulled the trigger. There was a loud bang and a bright flash, then black smoke. Jon screamed in agony, then looked kind of amazed as he slumped back onto the bed with blood streaming from a severe head wound. It was horrible."

Hexum's assistant ran to him and wrapped his head in a towel. An ambulance was called, but before it could arrive, Hexum slipped into a coma, prompting crew members to carry him to one of the studio's station wagons and drive him to Beverly Hills Medical Center. Hexum went into surgery as his family and girlfriend, actress Elizabeth Daily, were notified of his condition. Initially he was listed as being in "serious" condition, but after five hours of surgery, doctors changed the condition to "critical". Hexum was intubated and connected to a respirator, and lingered for six days before doctors pronounced him brain dead. With his mother's permission, Hexum was flown to San Francisco and taken off life support so that his organs could be donated.[8]
