Title: Eagles vs. Giants Will Play Sunday @ 4:30PM

QuoteEagles Clinch NFC East Title

December 31, 2006
By BOB KENT

By virtus of Dallas' 39-31 loss to the Lions, the Eagles clinched their fifth NFC East title under head coach Andy Reid. Philadelphia locked up the No. 3 seed in the NFC and will host the New York Giants at Lincoln Financial Field next Sunday at 4:30 PM.
The Eagles and Giants split their season series, with New York pulling off an improbable come-from-behind 30-24 win in week 2 and the Eagles posting a 36-22 win on Dec. 17 at the Meadowlands.

Playoff game tickets for Sunday, including standing-room-only, will go on sale Wednesday at 10 AM and will be available online at PhiladelphiaEagles.com, Ticketmaster.com or by calling Ticketmaster.

NOTE: No tickets will be sold at the Lincoln Financial Field box office.

Maybe this will be the year I get lucky and get through to Ticketmaster....

Their defense was pimped by Campbell for the most part. As always winning is going to rely on stopping Tiki. Make Eli beat you and the Eagles win. And put two people on Burress. I hope Shockey isn't 100%.

Ack...that makes me queasy just thinking about that play.

I'm totally thrilled at the schedule. We'll make my dad's service in lower DE on Saturday, and then head up for the tailgate Sunday morning, and go home after the game.

Thats a pure bitch! Although I do work a lot of Sundays, I take off at 12:00 during football season, no matter were I am or what I'm doing.

Tiki is coming off the best game of his career, and he wants to go out with a bang. He will be tough to stop. The Eagles O needs a quick lead and the D needs to knock Manning on his ass. With a game like this, I want to win the toss and score first, because a game like this could come down to who ever has the ball for the games last possesion. This is the tie breaker, and I think it will be close. A blowout would be great, but I don't think it will happen.

almost as bad as when they were hawking the NBA Eastern Conference Champs caps after the Sixers beat the Bucks.

I have to admit that I caved in 2000 and bought the NFC East Cap.  Got it in the mail just before kickoff against the Bucs.  May have to pop that tape into the VCR to get me jacked up for Sunday.

you're thinking of 2002.

the eagles beat the bucs in 2000 and 2001 in the playoffs, both on wildcard weekend. the 2000 season was the old 3 division alignment, so both were home eagles games.

Yeah I just realized my typo when I came back to the computer, I meant to say 2002.

2001 was a pretty good year, they got a lot furuther then I thought they would, and I got to be a fan of a team going into the NFC Championship game and not really expecting them to win. Of course, they did a good job getting my hopes up during the game that they might pull it out.

QuoteNew York Daily News - http://www.nydailynews.com
City of brotherly shove

Thursday, January 4th, 2007

The Giants and Eagles won't be having dinner together or even exchanging text messages after one of them gets eliminated on Sunday in Philly. This bitter rivalry has been taken to a new level with vicious hits the last few years that crossed the line and ignited tempers that already had short fuses.

The hostile atmosphere for the wild-card game will add to the Giants' intensity. They will feed off the animosity Eagles fans have for them and the animosity the Giants have for the Eagles, who they know too well to like.

"It's always a physical game," Plaxico Burress said yesterday. "A lot of trash talking. Always a lot of hard hitting. We don't like each other. I noticed that my first time out there last year playing against those guys. It's one of those games that each team really gets jacked up for. Both cities don't like each other. Our fans don't like their fans and their fans don't like ours."

These Giants-Eagles games are so intense not even the placekickers and punt-ers are not safe.

In the 2004 season opener, Eagles linebacker Jeremiah Trotter, trying to work his way back into the starting lineup, blind-sided punter Jeff Feagles and knocked him out. That infuriated the Giants. "I never saw him coming. He just laid me out," Feagles said yesterday. "I was out."

Feagles was 15 yards from the play. He suffered a mild concussion, a small cut on his cheek and a sore jaw. He said that inspired

"The Feagles Rule," with punters out of the play off-limits. Feagles said he and Trotter met up in the tunnel after the teams played later in the season at Giants Stadium. "He apologized," Feagles said. "It was an informal apology."

Asked if he ever spoke to Feagles about the hit, Trotter yesterday said, "No."

He did say, "You don't intentionally go out to hurt anybody. That was a situation where I felt he was trying to make a play."

Although it wasn't necessarily retribution, in the second game of the season this year, Eagles kicker David Akers was roughed up on the sidelines by Luke Petitgout and Brandon Jacobs. It happened after Akers lowered his head and ran into former Giants fullback Charles Way, now

their director of player development, at the end of the opening kickoff.

Akers claimed he was pushed into Way. He called Giants kicker Jay Feely four times in the days after the game to explain. He also called Way to apologize. Feely had rescued Akers after he disappeared in the land of the Giants, retrieved his helmet and sent him back to the Eagle sideline.

"I took some heat for that from my teammates," Feely said. "I was willing to take it. I told David not to do it again, though."

Petitgout insisted Akers "purposely put his head down and tried to hit one of our guys in the head with his helmet. He tried to be a punk and cheap shot somebody who is standing there with nothing on but street clothes."

Akers, Jacobs and Petitgout were each fined $5,000 by the NFL.

In the final moments of regulation that

day, Eagles defensive end Trent Cole was penalized 15yards for kicking Giants tackle Kareem McKenzie in the groin. That allowed Feely to attempt a 35-yard field goal, rather than a 50-yarder, with 51 seconds left that got the Giants into overtime after they trailed 24-7 going into the fourth quarter.

Burress shut up the Eagles fans who mooned the Giants bus on the way into the stadium by outmaneuvering Sheldon Brown for Eli Manning's 31-yard TD pass in overtime. The next day, a picture of Cole kicking McKenzie was prominently displayed in the Giants' locker room.

What will the atmosphere be like on Sunday? "Probably like hell," Antonio Pierce said.

He expects to see plenty of middle fingers "from the little kids to the old people that can't even flip them and need somebody to hold their hand up," he said. "But I love it. You don't want to go anywhere else and play."

Eli Manning was introduced to the ferocity of Giants-Eagles games in mop-up time in the opening game of his rookie year. He was crushed by Jerome McDougle, a clean shot. Manning's father, Archie, was in the stands in Philly. "I thought he was dead," Archie said. "And that his career would be over before it started. I've never seen anybody get hit that hard. I was glad he got up. I was real glad he got up."

That hit was not as damaging as the shot Eagles safety Brian Dawkins gave Giants reciever Ike Hilliard in 2002 that resulted in a separated shoulder, torn labrum and torn chest muscle for Hilliard and cost Dawkins $50,000.

The intensity of the Eagles-Giants rivarly has led to the animosity that exists between the teams, and that

was the regular season. Sunday, the stakes are higher.

the fact that they lost the first game, and that it was played in week 2, makes you forget that the offense dominated the Giants that game.

basically, the Giants defense hasn't been able to contain the Eagles offense all season, no matter who was the quarterback.

I haven't forgotten that.

Moving the ball and scoring on the Giants hasn't been and isn't a concern of mine.  My concern is Tiki trying to extend his career and go off into the sunset scorching our D one last time.

Great.... ::)

One good point i have heard was how with Gilbride running the offense the giants utilzed their players the right way.  Plax for jump balls, Carter long balls, and Tiki getting to run the ball.  Washington was scared when they realized what they had studied for all week was basically a different team.  Hopefully Tiki got worn out last week.

I much rather prefer the underdog/they ain't got a shot in hell outlook. The only thing that makes me happy about the Eagles being a media darling is that it makes the likes of Jimmy Johnson and Michael Irvin look like that much more of a retard.

"Scouts Edge" from ESPN Insider:
Quote
Earlier this week, our scouts filed their advance scouting report on this week's matchup between the Giants and Eagles. Now they're back with a second look.

This game will be interesting to see how Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Johnson adjusts to new Giants play caller Kevin Gilbride. Gilbride has more time this week to prepare his game plan for the Eagles by utilizing new formations and personnel groupings he feels will give his offense an edge. He will not rewrite the Giants' playbooks in one week, but he will add his own mark to it.
We saw last week against the taterskins a small sampling of the exotic formations from Gilbride, when he put two quarterbacks in the game at the same time and used a two-halfback personnel grouping. Johnson is going to have to make good game-day adjustments to counter what Gilbride is going to throw at him, because Johnson has no film or tendencies to base his game plan on.

• The Eagles' defense will need to insert a safety into run support this week, as Gilbride is going to give them a heavy dose of Tiki Barber and Brandon Jacobs.

Look for Gilbride to use both halfbacks at the same time, with Barber flexed out as a receiver in the slot along with tight end Jeremy Shockey (if healthy), giving the Giants a four-wide receiver look.

This will spread the Eagles out to allow Jacobs room to run against a soft run front. Look for Johnson to counter by zone dogging to get a more favorable number count in the box, but he has to be cautious of the threat of the Giants to throw deep off four vertical routes.

• The Eagles, with Marty Mornhingweg calling the plays, have become more balanced and it has been this balance that has caused problems for defensive coordinators. Look for Mornhingweg to utilize more two-back personnel groups on mix downs, giving him the ability to provide a lead blocker for Westbrook. It also allows him to run play action passes that can give him good protection in case the Giants blitz.

The Eagles have used two halfbacks in the game at the same time, with Correll Buckhalter staying in the backfield and Westbrook flexed out like a receiver. With Buckhalter's injury, that duty would fall to Reno Mahe or Ryan Moats, and this package could be put on the shelf this game if Eagles head coach Andy Reid and Mornhingweg feel that the replacements cannot get the job done. Mornhingweg also will mix in some three- wide receiver formations to take advantage of the Giants' depleted secondary.

• First down has been good to the Eagles' offense, as it has averaged 4.9 yards per carry, which ranks in the top five in the NFL. But it is in the passing game that the Eagles lead the league, averaging an impressive 9.8 yards per pass play. If you combine the two, the Eagles have the most explosive offense on first down, averaging 7.4 yards per play, two yards more then the NFL average.

It will be important for the Giants' defense to stop the Eagles on first down to get them in longer yardage situations. The Giants' defense is allowing 5.3 yards per play, which ranks 15th in the league. Their run defense has been the key, as they are only allowing 3.8 yards a carry, compared to 6.6 yards a pass play.

• Even though the Eagles' defense appears to have stopped the run the last few weeks, not giving up a 100-yard rusher to the Cowboys or Giants, this team is still weak against the run because it is allowing over four yards a carry.

They Giants have gained four yards or more 115 times this year on first down, while averaging over five yards a carry. Look for Gilbride to run the ball on first down and mix in some play action or gadget type passes to throw the ball deep.

• Third down is going to be critical as neither defense is truly great at forcing teams to punt, with the Eagles having a slight edge over the Giants. The key for the Eagles is to limit the Giants' gains on first and second down, getting them in longer yardage (seven plus yards) third downs where they have done an excellent job of forcing teams to punt (31 percent efficiency rating).

If the Giants' offense can get into the 3-6 yard range, the Eagles' defensive efficiency rating jumps to 50.1 percent. The Giants' offense is converting on 37.9 percent of its third downs. Look for the Eagles' defense to pressure Manning on third down, as he is completing just 40.9 percent of his passes. The other playoff teams average 57 percent.

• The Giants defense better hope it holds the Eagles offense out of the red zone, as it is allowing over 65 percent of the drives to end in touchdowns, last in the NFL. Look for the Giants to blitz more in the red zone this week, as they are allowing only 36 percent of the passes to be complete, with six going for touchdowns. They are making the quarterback get rid of the ball quickly and not very accurately when they bring pressure.

The Eagles will counter by moving Garcia out of the pocket on sprintout type plays, giving him an option to run or pass the ball.

Special Teams
This game could come down to field position and Giants punter Jeff Feagles has done an excellent job all season of directional punting, pinning opposing returners to the sideline. Feagles has only 42 percent of his punts returned on him, which is best among directional punters in the league, with 21 punts going out of bounds.

The Giants have had problems with the kickoff return team this year because they have not found a reliable returner in Chad Morton or Derrick Ward (both are on IR). They are averaging just 20 yards a return, which is near the bottom of the league with an average drive start of the 25-yard line, forcing them to go the long field. The average length of a Giants' scoring drive is just 53 yards.

In a game that could come down to a field goal, the Eagles resigned kicker David Akers' favorite holder Koy Detmer in the hope that they have no more problems with the holds on field goals going into the playoffs.

Akers is making 78.6 percent of his field goals and is 9 of 13 between the 30-50 yard range, but has not attempted a kick outside of 50 yards. Punter Dirk Johnson has a net punt average of 34.9 yards, with a poor hang time of 4.18 seconds that does not allow his coverage to get off its blocks and get down field to cover the punt.

Matchups
• New York WR Plaxico Burress vs. Philadelphia CB Sheldon Brown
• New York LOT Bob Whitfield or David Diehl vs. Philadelphia DE Trent Cole
• Philadelphia RG Shawn Andrews vs. New York DT Fred Robbins
• Philadelphia RT Jon Runyan vs. New York DE Osi Umenyiora
• Philadelphia DC Jim Johnson vs. New York OC Kevin Gilbride

Scouts' Edge
This will be a hard-hitting, physical game between two teams that have no love for each other. The Giants just barely made it into the playoffs with an 8-8 record and will look to upset the Eagles at home, something that they have done before. The key for them is to stick with the run and keep the game out of Manning's hands, while their defense needs to make some plays against the Eagles' offense.

Jeff Garcia has been playing extremely well the last few weeks and will have to be smart with the football, taking advantage of the Giants' secondary with his core of receivers. The Eagles will mount enough of a run defense to slow down Barber, giving them the victory on Sunday.

Prediction: Eagles 24, Giants 20

I agree with sticking with the run, but sticking with the run to keep it out of Manning's hands is not on the top of my worried list. Tiki running wild is. If anything, I hope the Eagles run the ball extremely well Sunday, score TDs, and make Manning beat them with his arm.

The way Eli has been playing that should be in the Eagles gameplan for Sunday.

It might be difficult for the Giants to go from completely sucky to executing well, but they are still the Giants. Even when the Eagles were having their way in the division with the Skins and Cowboys, the Giants always played the Eagles tough.

I don't know what to think about this game. It should be fun to watch, and the Eagles are still playing consistently (at least the backups played well last week), so they should be able to handle the Giants on Sunday.

However, I'm afraid of the stupid penalties wiping out big plays, having a couple of boneheaded moments that lead to big plays and give the Giants life, not finishing drives and settling for FGs, etc.

Hopefully, that all is settled on Sunday.

Special Weather Statement
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Issued by the National Weather Service at 3:55 PM EST on January 5, 2007

... Record warmth possible Saturday with a round of heavy rain
possible Sunday night into Monday morning...

Low pressure will track into the eastern Great Lakes tonight, then
to near northern New England on Saturday. This will allow a cold
front to cross our region late on Saturday. Since we continue to be
on the east side of the storm systems, unseasonably mild air will
continue across the region through the first part of the weekend. In
fact even warmer air will surge into the region during Saturday,
with record warmth a good possibility in several locations Saturday
afternoon.

The following are the record high temperatures for Saturday,

At Philadelphia Pennsylvania, 71 degrees set back in 1950,
at Atlantic City New Jersey, 69 degrees set back in 1950,
at Wilmington Delaware, 70 degrees set back in 1950,
at Allentown Pennsylvania, 60 degrees set back in 1998,
at Trenton New Jersey, 68 degrees set back in 1950,
in reading Pennsylvania, 63 degrees set back in 1950,
at Mount Pocono Pennsylvania, 57 degrees set back in 1950,
and in Georgetown Delaware, 70 degrees set back in 1950.

After the potentially record warmth on Saturday, another low pressure
system is expected to develop along the Gulf Coast on Sunday and
move over our area Sunday night and Monday morning. This will bring
another round of rain to the entire area, possibly heavy in some
areas. With the already wet ground coupled with the potential for
around an inch of rain Sunday night into Monday morning, there could
be some flooding. Stay tuned to later forecasts and possible
statements regarding this developing weather situation.

Calling the play from the sidelinesCouple with craving for big-game seats will do 'it' for you, & it's mostly all up for grabs
By CHRISTINE OLLEY & DAVID GAMBACORTA
olleyc@phillynews.com 215-854-5184
IN TRUE Philly form, two local fans are taking their love for the Eagles way beyond a little green and white face paint.

According to an ad on craigslist.org, a "very attractive younger couple, both in grad school" are willing to let a complete stranger watch them have sex in exchange for two tickets to tomorrow's playoff showdown between the Birds and the New York Giants.

The couple, who say they couldn't afford the steep ticket prices, are even willing to let the ticket-holding voyeur call the plays for their bedroom romp.

"We've talked about it and figured we'd see if anyone had two tickets that would want to offer them up for watching us do what you choose in real life," said the ad, which was posted on the Web site Thursday.

There are some restrictions - "(no pain/potty/or anal, gf's [girlfriend's] rules)" - but for the most part, any other erotic ideas are fair game.

Eagles cornerback Sheldon Brown was stunned last night when he learned about the frisky fans' plans to take their devotion to the team to another level.

"It's typical of the fans' passion for the team," said Brown, who signed autographs during a raucous pep rally at Chickie's & Pete's in South Philly.

While hundreds of revved-up fans shouted "Giants suck! Giants suck!" in the background, Brown said it was amazing that the man and woman weren't embarrassed by their provocative offer. "I definitely wouldn't do something like that," he said.

Though the sex-for-tickets offer might be the most extreme offer out there, plenty of other passionate fans are lusting after playoff tickets.

Dave Wedzick, a seller on eBay. com, offered up tickets to the game but specified that he would consider bids only from Eagles fans.

"It would kill me to have Eagles fans sit next to a fan from another town," he said, noting that his tickets were sold to a die-hard Birds fan.

Wedzick, a former city resident who now lives in Erie, said he makes it to only a handful of games a year.

"These are my tickets and I specify Eagles fans only all the time because of that reason," he said. "If I can't get to a game, I want another Eagles fan to have them."

Tickets were still available last night on eBay.com, craigslist.org and www.razorgator.com, but the price was steep. A pair of tickets on the 50-yard line would set a buyer back $1,000. Seats in the nosebleed section fetched as much as $600 on some sites, and standing room only tickets were available for $200.

"The fact that Philadelphia fans are willing to be honest and get down on the team when they are not doing well makes them all the more passionate about them when they are doing well," Wedzick said.

That made the front cover of the DN today. :-D

From today's Inky:

QuoteThe 12th Man (and Woman)

Eaglesfans One of the gifts of this unexpected Eagles' post-season is that the national media can spend more time swinging at a favorite target: the Philadelphia fan. This is a sort of an evergreen, we understand. The column writes itself.

But some new material has come out lately. Good stuff.

Sports Illustrated has a piece on Giant running back Tiki Barber, who at 31 has said this is his last season. Why is he retiring?

The Illadelph blog brought this to our attention Thursday.  Blame (or credit) Eagles fans.

From SI:

There is a moment when you know, Tiki Barber discovers. When the idea, lurking unspoken in your subconscious, suddenly is fully formed, and you can put words to it. Barber is standing in the end zone at Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field before the Sept. 17 game against the Eagles, waiting in line with the other New York Giants running backs to practice short pass routes. [...]

In the stands the green-clad Philly fans are shouting their usual stream of profane invective at the Giants, warning of impending violence, singling out Barber in particular. Barber looks at the mob, the men in their Trotter jerseys, the boys in their McNabbs, and doesn't feel a thing.

"You know what?" he says to Finn, his best friend on the team. "I'm done."

Then there was this tender tableau from the New York Daily News this week, in a Gary Myers column chronicling the bad blood between the division rivals:

What will the atmosphere be like on Sunday? "Probably like hell," Antonio Pierce said.

He expects to see plenty of middle fingers "from the little kids to the old people that can't even flip them and need somebody to hold their hand up," he said. "But I love it. You don't want to go anywhere else and play."

Thank God we have our defenders. Philadelphia Will Do this fall picked the wings off a column by a Penn student and Giants fan that portrayed Eagles fans uncharitably.

And we have U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa.. Back in 2002, he used his office to write an angry letter to the New York Times. This, too, is an evergreen:

"On behalf of all Philadelphians, I take strong exception to your October 29, 2002 article, "To Eagles, Shockey is Public Enemy No. 1," Specter states in his letter to the Times. "The 1991 quote from Bill Parcells referring to Philadelphia as a "banana republic" is as inaccurate as it is stale. As any high school student knows, Philadelphia is not a "republic." It is the city where the "republic" known as the United States of America was founded."

"It is not hard to find incidents of unruly fans which are not representative of the people of the cities in which they live," Specter continues. "For example, there is the famous "snowball game" of December 23, 1995 in which Giants fans threw both snow and ice balls at San Diego Charger fans and players, one of which knocked the San Diego equipment manager unconscious. More than 200 fans were ejected and over 75 season tickets revoked. The New York Giants then ran an ad in San Diego papers apologizing."

"People living in glass houses should not throw snowballs," Specter concludes.

QuoteON HIS OWN

SOLDIERS AREN'T INCLINED TO SAVE GEN. COUGHLIN

January 7, 2007 -- PHILADELPHIA - His body of work does not inspire New York to believe he will deliver it a championship any time soon. There isn't a Giant fan who longs for the young Bill Parcells, or even for the young Eric Mangini, who will tell you today that Tom Coughlin is a great coach.

It means he needs to coach a great game against the Eagles today to keep his job.

Coughlin has the same Us-Against-the-World scenario that Parcells had at Candlestick Park when he and Bill Belichick denied Joe Montana a threepeat in the 1990 NFC Championship Game.

Let's see what Coughlin can do with it.

Coughlin has the underdog team, the undermanned team, and no one who has been waiting 16 years for a third Lombardi Trophy particularly cares. A fan base that was promised a disciplined Super Bowl contender feels betrayed.

So this isn't just the Second Season for the Giants players: it is the Second Season for the Giants coach as well. The coach who wants everyone five minutes early to his meetings would have been five minutes late to the playoffs if Tiki Barber hadn't been right on time against the taterskins.

His record as he enters this back-alley brawl disguised as an NFC wild-card playoff game is 25-24. Giant fans were promised more than mediocrity when Coughlin was introduced and mentioned in the same sentence as Vince Lombardi three years ago. If Coughlin fails to deliver now, if his record falls to 25-25, a record that would include two first-round playoff losses, Giant fans again will be calling for his head, and Coughlin deserves to be Dead Coach Walking out the door. If the Giants do not show up, he is gone.

It wouldn't exactly bring a tear to the eyes of many of his players, who have grown weary of Coughlin's unwavering, joyless approach that has made it impossible to rally around him.

"He is set on discipline and on this schedule you guys cannot leave here until this time ... it's this way with the coaches and the players," one player said. "And damn if you get your work done early or what.

"Guys can't wait to get out of here, because we feel like we're being treated like adolescents. It's like he doesn't trust us to do our jobs."

Asked what percentage of the team feels that way, the player said:

"I'd say 95. And that five percent who don't are the rookies who don't know any better."

Yet if Coughlin somehow can beat Andy Reid, truly an elite coach, if he can devise the mother of all game plans and motivate his team to play above and beyond its means, he will get to stay for 2007, extension or no extension. All bets would be off after that while the new GM - the Patriots' Scott Pioli is the only way to go - waits for either Bill Belichick or Bill Cowher.

Coughlin rode roughshod over the Giants this week. His old-school style works only if he wins. "His take on it," one player said, "is, 'I'm trying to [tick] you guys off so you play better.'"

He got the spark he wanted from new offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride. He needs another one. The Second Season offers redemption for the downtrodden and dysfunctional. But understand that the last thing on the Giant players' minds is saving their coach. Coughlin better recognize that it's up to him to save himself.
