QuoteContinuing to lock up their young offensive linemen with long-term deals, the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday night reached agreement with starting left guard Todd Herremans on a five-year contract extension, ESPN.com has learned.
Todd Herremans
Herremans
The deal is worth $16 million to $17 million and includes a $5 million signing bonus. Herremans will sign the extension Saturday, which is the NFL deadline for teams to sign players to new contracts and be able to allocate remaining 2006 salary cap space to do so.
Philadelphia is typically proactive in reaching early extensions with players they believe are key to their future and Herremans, only a second-year pro, is considered one of the team's young veterans around whom the Eagles will build.
Herremans, 24, is the third young interior offensive lineman the Eagles have signed to extensions in the past seven months. Center Jamaal Jackson, in his first season as a full-time starter, and Pro Bowl right guard Shawn Andrews signed long extensions this summer. Jackson is under contract through 2013 and Andrews through 2016. The team's two starting tackles, William Thomas and Jon Runyan, are both signed through the 2008 season.
The extension with Herremans is also the fourth one team president Joe Banner, arguably the league's premier salary cap expert, has negotiated with a member of the Eagles' 2005 draft class. Defensive tackle Mike Patterson (No. 1), wide receiver Reggie Brown (No. 2a) and defensive end Trent Cole (No. 5a) are the other three players from that draft class to land extensions since the start of the season.
A fourth-round choice, Herremans, who played at Saginaw (Mich.) Valley State, started four games as a rookie in 2005, filling in for the injured Thomas at left tackle. He settled in at the left guard spot during training camp this summer and has started all 15 games heading into Sunday's regular-season finale against the Atlanta Falcons.
Solid signing. He has played very well at LG.
I guess we'll never see MJG then....
Yeah, can't argue with this move. Unless Reid resumes play calling, in which case it doesn't matter how good or how many good linemen you have.

Still possible. He needs some seasoning. Herremans can still play OT and I think he will be the guy who replaces Runyan in the future.
In two years it could be;
Justice
Jean-Gilles
Jackson
Andrews
Herremans
Or if they (stupidly) decide to move Andrews out to RT when Runyan is done, then MJG could replace Shawn.
Leave the fat man where he is.
Please, please leave Andrews at guard. PLEASE! I'm farging begging you, Andy. The guy is a guard.
Right now he's too fat to play tackle. If he cuts down on the ho-ho's and snackaroos, then maybe. But he's a pretty good guard, so keep on eatin' tubby.
I agree. He is Larry Allen Jr. He must stay inside where he can kill DTs.
Larry Allen with or without all the weed?

Nate Newton was the weed guy in Dallas. So was Mark Stepnoski. Mark Tuinei was the crack head and died because of it.
maybe so but bam morris moved that weight

So you're saying Allen never, ever got arrested? He did choke Jose Cortez, but that little farger had it coming.
I don't think Larry has ever been arrested.
I remember a MNF game in 1994 or 1995 when the Saints were playing the Cowboys. Allen ran down a LB like 60 yards downfield and prevented a TD after an INT. It was amazing to watch him truck after the dude.
Back in 1998, a stripper accused him of raping her at knifepoint but there was no evidence and the charges were dropped...
Andrews is definitely a G. He commands DTs and is so valuable in pulling when it comes to off tackle runs. Having a guard that can dominate the inside yet be quick enough to pull in order to seal off the outside should not be playing tackle.
Herremans has been solid. I just hope the dominance continues. With how well Garcia has been playing, the O-line has really been the difference maker on the offensive side of the ball. They really collectively stepped up their game the past 4 outings and have opened up so much in the running game and in the passing game giving Garcia a nice pocket to work with, great throwing lanes, and tons of time.
Big fan of this signing. The guy seems versital sp? enough to play every position other than C. I have to say Phreak that having that outlook at the O Line is a great future. MJG will get his chance at LG in 2 years.

Amen.
No matter what, one thing you can always trust the current front office with is offensive lineman.

I'd like to add a few "please"s to this statement... and that will explain how I feel.
Andrews will man the RG position for the Eagles until he retires. Belee dat.

Andrews is down like 60 pounds from last year, but he's still a big man. He is definitely a (pro bowl) force at guard, keep him there.
for the future: Justice + MJG/other + Jamal + Andrews + Herremans is a
SICK O-line.
IF the team runs the ball. If not, it's just average.
andrews = HOF guard or potential all pro tackle
which would you choose?
I dunno. Herremans is making himself pretty comfortable at G too. MJG was predicted by some as a first rounder. He might be more valuable as trade-bait than a backup.

It was reported near the trading deadline in October that there was plenty of interest in MJG--but I don't think enough to have Reid trade him.
extended again, through 2016

He gave one of the better interviews I've heard on Sirius today with Kirwin/Rock. I think he used the word "insanity" three times in talking about Mudd and what he had them doing. But he said it was the kind of crazy things you'd never think would work but when you try it, it does. Unusual since he tends to be kind of understated, almost monotone in his interviews that I've heard.
Glad for the re-sign. Best case scenario they would get a top RT, but at least Herremans is a versatile and solid starter, and still young. They are probably getting him a lot cheaper than if they waited until his contract year, so gives him some more security and saves the team cap space.
Some of the comments in this thread are comedy gold.
to be released today per the twitter.
damn
gonna save 2.8M against the cap but there will be 2.4M in dead money.
Damn that sucks. He was one of my favorite Eagles

He's fallen off quite a bit but if this is true I see no reason not to keep him around. There isn't an upgrade on the roster.
I wonder if that manneans they're going to have to draft a lineman in the first three rounds.

that was my thought too, they have a ton of cap room but i know teams are always trying to squeeze what they can. i'd cut cole over herremans but they'll probably do both
Ten year starter. Amazing considering his auspicious beginnings here...
Best Herremans story is when him and Juqua Thomas were out in his rapemobile van smoking weed and trying to pick up chicks at Lehigh
Love this move....they have ignored getting younger and better on the OL both starting and depth for too long...and guard might be the easiest position in football to fill
yet somehow they couldn't do it with an early 1st round pick
they also whiffed as bad as you can whiff on a guy at any position in the fireman
On second thought bring back herremans!!
we're on the same team buddy
tough to judge until you see what they do in FA, but getting younger here seems likely
my guess is they sign a cheaper alternative to herremans in FA and draft someone in the 3-4 round hoping he will one day become the starter.
Ha, what nonsense. As opposed to what, dude, drafting him in the 3-4 round and hoping he plays like a guy who was drafted in rounds 3-4?
If any player Kelly drafted played like he was drafted in the round he was drafted, the Eagles would be the GOAT.
