Per IGY, SunMo, and PhiladelphiaEagles.com.  The deal runs into 2013 apparently.

Right.

Where's the outrage about this?  :-D

The outrage has been supressed by the slow realization that this team's season is over. Plus Cole puts up pretty little statistics that Patterson does not. At this point I'm having a hard time getting fired up about this one way or another. Please god just beat the god awful taterskins.

Good signing.  I also liked the Patterson extension.  I guess they are going to let L.J., Hood and Lewis test free agency?

Hood is gone. He wants to start and get paid.

Lewis wanted Roy Williams money and ended up playing himself out of any extension here. He'll be allowed to walk.

Smith still has a year left on his deal. He is signed through 2007.

Stallworth hasn't proved he deserves big money because of his health issues. But that is a good thing if they really want to bring him back. The hamstring issues have cost him and he should be able to sign for a reasonable amount. They can lock him up later after the season so they don't have to give NO a 3rd round pick.

Solid move getting Killa Cole locked up. :yay

QuoteCole, Eagles agree on 5-year pact

By LES BOWEN
bowenl@phillynews.com

Just before yesterday's deadline for extending contracts and stashing part of the money under this year's salary cap, the Eagles reached agreement with defensive end Trent Cole on a 5-year extension that agent Rich Rosa said contains $12 million in signing and roster bonuses.

Cole, a second-year player, had 2 ½ seasons left on the original deal he signed as a fifth-round draft pick out of Cincinnati, which was scheduled to pay him about $350,000 this season. Rosa said the money in the extension will total between $26 million and $28 million. He said the roster bonus comes due in February.

The Eagles tried to get an extension done with second-year wideout Reggie Brown, but could not. The Brown talks seemed a nearer miss than negotiations with tight end L.J. Smith and his agent, Brian Mackler. Mackler said last night that despite extensive discussions, Smith, who can be a free agent after the 2007 season, was not close to signing an extension. Brown's agent, Bill Johnson, acknowledged he and the Eagles were talking seriously as the 4 p.m. deadline approached.

Defensive end is a marquee position in the NFL and the Eagles had to come up with serious money to lock up Cole, who leads the team with 6 ½ sacks and has 11 ½ sacks in his first 23 pro games. Players know they often can make more money letting their deals expire and going through free agency, but they have to get to free agency in good health to do that, and Rosa and Cole both said they felt $12 million was enough to assuage any disappointment Cole might feel if he turns out to be underpaid 3 or 4 years from now.

"It was kind of hard to determine what I wanted to do," Cole, 24, said. "Anything can happen. You've got to compare all the variables, the factors that can happen... It turns me loose. I can go out and play ball and have fun with it, without worrying [about the future]. It's just job security. I'm glad I'm part of the team."

Rosa works for Eastern Athletic Services, which represents a number of prominent defensive ends, including Michael Strahan, John Abraham and Patrick Kerney. Rosa said he was confident Cole's deal would withstand scrutiny.

Cole said he wished critics of such deals - some agents feel players who extend early end up selling themselves short - "could be in our position, know what we feel, what can happen. We can get hurt the next day and get shortchanged. We've got to make the money that we can."

There probably won't be much debate among the fan base over whether signing Cole long term was a smart thing for the Birds to do, given his productivity, though like many Eagles defenders, he is undersized. The team lists Cole generously at 6-3, 270.

Last week, the Eagles signed defensive tackle Mike Patterson (through 2016). Earlier they extended guard/tackle Shawn Andrews (2015), center Jamaal Jackson (2013), free safety Brian Dawkins (2008) and punter Dirk Johnson (2011).

I don't really care about LJ Smith. Even though he's a free agent after 2007, he hasn't done much worthy of being paid big-time. A good game here a bad game there. It is the same old LJ Smith every year. Let's get a consistent TE in here for once... that can actually farging block.
