QuoteBattered Vick questions role after Falcons loss
ESPN.com news services
Falcons quarterback Michael Vick is beat up and sounds a little fed up after last Sunday's 27-14 loss to the Giants.
Vick returned to practice on Thursday after missing Wednesday's session with a sore shoulder, according to a report in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
The newspaper said the quarterback taped a session of Inside the NFL for HBO and told host Cris Carter that getting sacked a career-high seven times by the Giants got to him.
"It's the worst I ever felt," Vick told Carter.
During the interview, Vick blamed the game plan for the beating the Falcons took.
"You've got to throw the ball sometimes," Vick said. "You can't just line up and run the ball every time on first and second down. Teams key in on that and they have coaches, too. We're going to have to throw it more ... Coach [Jim Mora] is going have to trust in me to get it done and I'm up to the challenge to get it done."
Carter asked Vick if his old coach, Dan Reeves, was better for his game.
Vick answered: "When Reeves was here, I was 50 yards shy of 3,000 yards passing, and I was among top 15 in passing in NFL. Coach Reeves, he believed in me and gave me a chance to throw the football."
The frustrated quarterback didn't stop at questioning the coaching staff. He also wondered if he'd be better off with different teammates, specifically at wide receiver.
Carter threw out names like Chad Johnson and Randy Moss, and Vick said, "Or a Marvin Harrison. ... I always think about that, Cris. I always think, if I played in Indianapolis, what type of effect would I have on that team? Or what would I be able to do different? It's something I wish I could do for just one week."
Taking a shot at the head coach? Check.
Taking a shot at his teammates? Check.
For the last few years all we hear is how Mike just wants to be himself. he wants to not be shoe-horned into an offense and be able to run. He praises the option offense the lifted from West Virginia and says it is allowing him to be him.
Now the dude is saying he wants to throw it? And seems to say that Dan Reeves is a better coach than Mora?
Ha! The guy is nuts.
So the dumbest player in the history of the league gets sacked a few times and then complains about not passing the ball enough, when everyone in the league knows that he can't pass his way out of a paper bag? On top of that he's spent the last several years whining about how running the ball is part of his game and makes up for his awful quarterbacking skills? Sounds like someone wants to hand his job over to Matt Schaub.
It would be great if the Falcons continue to suck. I really never had anything against them until Jim Mora's little rant following their loss to the Eagles in the NFCCG.
When Reeves was here, I was 50 yards shy of 3,000 yards passing
lololol
Come on, you know the coaches have to be dying to play Schaub. Vick is the classic "potential" guy coach killer. If I'm a coach, I don't want some dynamic mystery waiting to happen on every play. I don't want excitement. I want a consistent guy that can do what I ask him to do on a regular basis. I'd definitely want someone else to have the highlight film headache.

The funny thing is they gave Vick that huge contract extension with Schaub on the roster. If they were smart, and they're not, they'd trade Vick and let Schaub run that offense.
Matt Schaub, with that running game, would be lethal. They'd rule that NFC South.
Schaub is a goner after this year. I wonder where he'll end up? Oakland?
They're roasting his ass on the radio here and I love it. Kinda surprising considering the homer-style radio that dominates around here.
Still the organiztion and the majority of fans here refuse to even consider the idea that Vick could be to blame for a passing offense that's dead last in the NFL. They ignore the fact that during Vick's time here, they've:
1. Changed Head Coaches
2. Changed Offensive Coordinators/QB Coaches
3. Spent 3 1st round picks on WR's for him... and just brought in Ashley Lelie as another weapon.
4. Provided an All-Pro RB in Warrick Dunn
5. Provided an All Pro-TE in Alge Crumpler
6. Brought in Steve Young as a QB coach/consultant
7. (Sort of) brought Alex Gibbs out of retirement to implement a blocking scheme for the offensive line
... all in an effort to make his job easier and he still can't get it done. Now here he is, throwing eveyone else under the bus as if he's not part of the problem.
Even more... Warrick Dunn has just come out saying that he's unhappy because he'd like to catch more passes, Ashley Lelie is (already) unhappy because he wants to catch more passes. All this with the Steelers coming to town. Week by week... the Matt Schaub buzz is getting louder and louder... and it'll get even worse after the Steelers drop Vick's ass this weekend.

That was all their owner. And he's actually smart. Who sells more jerseys/tickets, Vick or Schaub? Vick. Who causes a buzz? Vick. Winning games? Being effective on the field? These things are secondary.

They have so much talent on O that I think you would have to be right about that.
i still find it super funny that his personal claim to fame in the nfl is that he once threw for 50 yards short of 3000
i wonder if these latest comments will finally cause the talking heads at espn to stop blowing vick

No doubt. Porn stache' Blank (him and Lurie should grow 'em back) is reaping the benefits of having him on that team. He helps generate a buzz for a relatively moribund fan base.
But one could argue that a consistent winner would also help a city spend money on the team.
IGY,
They'll never stop blowing him. He's an ESPN center piece. Can you think of a player, in any sport, who has been hailed as great by the talking heads but doesn't do it on the field/court/ice?
Off the top of my head I can't. The hype -to- production ratio with him is overloaded on the hype side of things.
Can you think of a player, in any sport, who has been hailed as great by the talking heads but doesn't do it on the field/court/ice?
no i cant
but thats because there isnt one

On top of everything else, his math sucks. Technically, he was 64 yards shy of 3000.
You gotta remember, this is the same guy who threw for 200 yards and 2 TD's against the Dolphins last year and pounded his chest in the postgame PC about how he "doesn't want to hear anymore about how he can't throw."
I think that it is the coaching staff to blame. He has some obvious talents, which are running and throwing deep. He has some obvious weaknesses, which are accuracy. His first full year was his best year ever. Then they changed to a west coast offense, which emphasizes, short accurate passes and he has gotten worse every year.
Your first year shouldn't be your best year, but for some reason they try and fit the player to the system and not the other way around.
Also, he's a total icehole and his brother is going to be robbing convenience stores in about 5 years.

Vick said he dreams of one day playing in the Colts offense.
He hopes to one day land a job as their new runningback.
MICHAEL VICK can't seem to make up his mind who he wants to be. One minute the Falcons quarterback wants to be a vertical passer, the next he wants to dink and dunk. One minute he wants to be the ultimate running quarterback, the next he wants to be Joe Namath.
After getting the you-know-what kicked out of him in Sunday's 27-14 loss to the Giants, Vick, who 2 months ago scoffed at Donovan McNabb's preference for the pocket over the open range, now has decided that he too wants to stay behind the line of scrimmage and heave 40 passes a game. Of course, that could change by the time this paper gets to your front door.
Vick, 26, has rushed for 401 yards in the Falcons' first five games. He's averaging 8.7 yards per carry, almost 3 yards more than he's averaging per pass attempt. He's on pace to rush for 1,283 yards, which would blow to smithereens the NFL record for rushing yards in a season by a quarterback (968 by the Bears' Bobby Douglass in 1972).
But it finally has dawned on him that the punishment he's taking might not be conducive to a long and healthy NFL life. Duh!
"If I want to play until I'm 34, 35 years old, then I have to take that into consideration,'' Vick told Cris Carter of HBO's "Inside the NFL'' this week. "I have to protect myself. I've been trying to do that. But Sunday I was sacked seven times and took 24 hits [including eight rushing attempts]. The longevity won't be there if I continue to go at that rate.''
Falcons coach Jim Mora and offensive coordinator Greg Knapp have tried to accommodate Vick at every turn.
They've let him run so much because Vick told them to let Mike be Mike, and well, it's what he does best. He's thrown just 117 passes in five games and is a dismal 28th in the league in passing with a 66.0 efficiency rating and a 50.4 completion percentage.
"It's not hard for me to make plays in the passing game,'' Vick said. "I think some people think I can't make plays [passing], but I can. I want people to recognize me as a complete quarterback. And I feel right now, I am.
"Tom Brady, Peyton [Manning], Donovan... they all throw from the pocket, make the right decisions, do the right things. I'm up there with Peyton and Brady and Donovan. I think I'm there with that group [as a passer]. But I don't feel I get the credit I deserve as far as what I do and the impact I have on my team.''

Riiiiiiiight... :-D
Ron Mexico es muy loco.
His claim to fame will end being that he will end up being more of a success than his fargwad brother.
I think you're all forgetting the obvious. His biggest claim to fame will be Ron Mexico and the herp outbreak on his lips.
If the Falcons go out there and get their asses kicked tomorrow... that locker room is going to implode.
They should sign TO just for the hell of it.
QuoteFalcons | Team installs passes that fit Vick
Sun, 22 Oct 2006 08:26:13 -0700
ESPN's Sal Paolantonio reports the Atlanta Falcons have installed "Vick-friendly" passes for QB Michael Vick to use Week 7. The team will use curls, skinny posts and deep passes for the game.
Brilliant.
It's amazing that the Falcons have a coaching staff talented enough to adjust to a new quarterback so quickly. Michael Vick's only been with the team for six seasons; usually it's at least the tenth season before a team starts designing plays that their quarterback can successfully execute.
18-30, 232 yds, 4 TDs, 2 INTs
Well... at least for a week, looks like we all need to shut the farg up about Mr. Mexico's passing. Not too many times I wish McNabb had Vick's stat line.

Eh. I'll take McNabb's 1 poor performance over Vick's 5 poor performances prior to today.

I was thinking the same thing - maybe Dan Snyder could buy a new expansion team, and populate it with all the prima dona punk-ass bitches, starting with:
Vick
T.O.
Lelie
Moss
Shockey
Cory Simon
The team will have no salary cap (it doesn't apply to Snyder anyway), and all players must be the highest paid at their position. Anyone can get on the team by publicly bitching about their contracts, touches or playing time. However, once on this team they cannot be cut or traded.
Any other suggestions? I'm having trouble coming up with a coach...I feel like it should be obvious, but I'm having a mental block...
Mike Martz, Brian Billick and Mike Shanahan would all be fine candidates.

Yeah, I did come up with Martz. I was trying to think of a coach who throws his players under the bus after a loss...like Spurrier would do when he was coaching at Florida, "I was brilliant, but the players just didn't execute"
Loyalty is simply not allowed on this team.
Gruden. He loves feuding with players.
QuoteVICK TAKES DIG AT COACHING STAFF
The fact that the Atlanta Falcons finally have reversed a full-out free-fall with a win against the taterskins wasn't enough to bring an end to the internal strife that could eventually trigger big changes after the season.
After the 24-14 road win, Vick offered up this explanation of a 22-yard touchdown pass to Michael Jenkins, which gave the Falcons the lead after they had fallen behind by 14: "[Jenkins] actually wasn't even in the read. Sometimes you've got to overcome coaching. I told him before the play to make sure he ran his route to win, and he did. Nobody on the field knew what I was going to do but me and him, so it kind of works out that way."
Sometimes you've got to overcome coaching.
The statement implies, obviously, that there's something bad about the coaching that needs to be overcome. Our guess is that, if Vick is pressed on the question, he'll say that he was misunderstood. Or maybe he'll offer up another perfunctory apology, perhaps with a $5,000 donation to a charity of coach Jim Mora's choice. Still, Vick said what he said, and it means what it means.
So regardless of the fact that (drum roll, please) the Falcons found a way to outscore the up-and-down taterskins, the Atlanta football franchise still has deeper issues that won't go away until there's a new coaching staff in the building. Or until Vick is gone.
He should start taking a page out of the Giants book and whenever someone asks him after a loss what happened say "We got outcoached." It would make for fine entertainment, but I don't think Mora would fire back because he still thinks he's one of the guys and wouldn't want to lose his locker room cred.
He just proves himself over and over to be an unintelligent icehole. Way to go Ron Mexico
I wonder what a ride on the Mike Vick Experience feels like now. Maybe they added a "get herpies" section and a "throw your coaching staff and teammates under the bus" section. Could be fun now.
Amazing how this topic has yet to come up on the local radio.
Feva thats because Vick=God to the AJC and the Atlanta area it seems
